Heavenly Father, when I look around and observe your Creation, I often wonder, At Creation: How much bluer were the skies? How much clearer were the waters? How much cleaner was the air? How much greener were the grasses and the trees? How much more colorful were the flowers? How much gentler and regular were the rains? Lord, help me and help others who care, that we can do our part to help this world start to return toward the purity of the Creation that You have given us. REFLECTION ON THE READINGS OF THE 27TH SUNDAY ORDINARY TIME YR. A _________________

In last Sundays gospel reading, Jesus told us that salvation is the fruit of His work and ours. However, he posits, it is not enough for us that we have accepted his invitation to enter his kingdom. Anyone who enters the Kingdom is obliged to bear fruit of genuine love for God and ones fellowmen. What kind of fruits have we bore during this week are they sweet or bitter? The first reading, God through the prophet Isaiah, gives us a very vivid description of his love for Israel, his chosen vineyard. God compares himself to a farmer who spares no sacrifice in cultivating the vineyard he loves so much that it may yield the best of grapes. Delivering them from the yoke of slavery of the Pharaoh God led them through the desert for forty years, gave them the Promised Land and established a covenant with them assuring them of his protection. Yet, Israel abandoned Him. God asks, What more was there to do for my vineyard that I have not done? (Isa.5:4) Israel, in exchange for the love God has lavished on her, instead of yielding sweet fruits by the proper observance of His laws, gave God the sour grapes of sins. What Isaiah saw around him were idol worship, immoral lives and oppression of the poor. In spite of Isaiahs appeal, the Jewish leaders and people were unrelenting in their wantonness. God abandoned them and withdrew His blessings. Israel was brought into exile. God, in his love, replanted Israel, moving King Cyrus of Persia to allow the Jews to return to their homeland. Again he gave them all the care in preparation for the coming of Jesus whom he promised to save them. When Jesus came, the Israelites and their leaders refused Jesus invitation to repentance. Instead of yielding good fruits of repentance and love what they have were wild grapes of pride, hatred and strife. Jesus has in his mind the song of Isaiah when He told His listeners the parable found in the gospel. He was

fully aware that the tenants murdering the son of the vineyard owner was to take place in him few days later. The patience of God was reflected in the succession of servants he sent to the tenants. It was the unfaithfulness of the Jews that led God to withdraw the Kingdom from them and gave it to the non-Jews. The gentiles became the new people of God. They became the new tenants of Gods vineyard replacing the old tenants taking away from the Jews the obligation to tend the vineyard in order to yield abundant sweet grapes. We are the news tenants working in the field of Gods Kingdom. This field is both our hearts and those of our fellowmen. It is our obligation that our hearts yields abundant fruit. God has entrusted to each one of us the plot of our own heart so we have must to pay attention to our own heart. But this does not mean that we should not be concerned with our brethren in faith. Our Christian community is a part of Gods Kingdom on earth; thus it is also be our concerned. We must see to it that it also yield fruit in abundance. To yield fruit is to live everyday in accordance with the Gospel, to submit always more decidedly to Gods loving rule individual and as a community. We are luckier than the Jews. We neither are not isolated vines, all alone by ourselves. We are exposed at all times to the roughness of the weather. We are branches of the most fruitful vine - the true vine which is Christ.As such, we must be sure that we are at all times are intimately united with Him. Intimate union with Him assures us yielding abundant fruit as He says, Without me you can do nothing. (Jn 15:5) In our work, either as individual Christians or as a community of Christians, we are never alone. Jesus joins us in cultivating the field. We must, however, be sure that we are united with Him so that the harvest is also assured as the psalmist says, Unless the Lord builds the house those who labor, labor in vain.
