Organizational Profile
SYNOPSIS
Increasing dysfunctional families are creating a child safety crisis in Malawi requiring urgent remedial response by all concerned citizens. Step Kids is a notion emerging from family breakdowns that result in second or third marriages caring for kids couple has not begotten. Frequently the treatment of such children is unacceptably inhuman and in certain cases brutal. The resultant effect of such a scenario in Malawi is a growing number of homeless or what is popularly known as street kids. Their characteristic features are begging, destitution, nakedness, homelessness and starvation. Consequently, such kids are raped, dehumanized, sodomised and traumatized by unscrupulous adults who make a living through immoral practices.

Malawi faces the ever-increasing challenge to restore marriage and family relationship as one way to create conducive environment for the safety, care and growth, hence well being of vulnerable children. Typically, the family must revert to its legitimate functions of meeting economic, social, moral, educational, safety and spiritual needs of children. Parental care, upbringing and social protection are built on family or parental love. On the other hand families lack the capacity to support children in the modern society, which is largely a cash economy unlike in the traditional family times when the agrarian society depended largely

on sustainable though subsistent agriculture economy particularly for food selfsufficiency. Tragically, step and other vulnerable kids are resorting to criminal acts as juvenile delinquency has increased thereby threatening peace and national destiny. Essentially, this is emanating from the children's lack of parental guidance, support and early training that guarantee child development especially cognitively, morally and socially. Unfortunately, this tragedy is affecting Malawi's leadership and development potential. Children form about 60 percent of Malawi population. The future of the country rests with these children. Destroying their moral and spiritual fibre means creating a chaotic society that will be self-destructive and guaranteeing worsening scenarios of underdevelopment.
