the nasscom -kpmg report of 2004 projects india’s software exports in it&ites/bpo sector at $49
billion (rs.2,30,300 crores) by 2009 with direct employment opportunity for 20 lakh graduates.
andhra pradesh aims to achieve rs.69,000 crores in software export turnover and seeks to create
employment for 3 lakh employees directly. it is estimated by nasscom that every direct job creates
four indirect jobs; hence it is expected to create indirect employment for 12 lakhs in the state by
2009.
for the years 2004-2005 and 2005-2006, ap has provided it employment to 65,844 fresh graduates.
as such for the next 3 years, government has to achieve the balance ambitious target of 2,35,000
employment., government has taken several initiatives to achieve the set target and one such
initiative is setting up of jawahar knowledge centre(jkc).
andhra pradesh has a vast potential for growth it/ites industry as large talented rural human
resource pool is available, with 240 engineering colleges with 86000 engineers, 272 masters in
computer applications colleges, with 13555 students and 350,000 general graduates coming out
every year. however these fresh graduates need to be made eligible and suitable for employment
by the industry. government has, therefore, chalked out action plan by having tie up with
universities/colleges and industry to impart communication skills to these fresh graduates in rural
areas to make them eligible for employment in it industry.
jawahar knowledge centers (jkc) – a forward step in this direction - is a unique human resource
promotion initiative of the government and first of its kind in the country.
jkc programme run by institute of electronic governance (ieg) – a society under it&c department -
in close coordination & association with it industry and government. jkc programme started in
2004.
• jkc aims to improve the quality of education through imparting suitable skills and enable
potential and gainful employment to final year engineering graduates thereby
contributing to the economic development of the state and the people.
• jkcs are established in reputed engineering colleges spread across the state of ap to
increase the standards of higher education. an engineering college that has a jkc should
provide a computer lab worth of rs.25 lakhs with a powerful server and 50 state-of-the-
art-high end dedicated desktops one to each student all of which are connected in a lan.
the college also provides accommodation to all the students of jkc.
• in jkc, the students are trained in the technical skills, soft skills, project management
skills and communication skills by employing accelerated learning strategies with a
mentor to student ratio of 1:5. jkcs thus provide the best human resource trained in all the
skills required by the industry, which in turn bridges, the gap between the student
curriculum knowledge and industry desired skills.
• jkc training involves a short-term training known as campus placement mission (cpm). in
this program the students are made aware of the recruitment process of different
companies. mock group discussions and mock interview are conducted for the students.
the students are also provided with required content for the students to get their
placements.
• jkc students also serve about 70 govt departments in terms of analysis, design,
development and deployment of the it applications required and thus gains practical
experience of doing the projects facing real life scenarios like working in a team,
managing time, effective way of developing software applications, etc. jkc therefore
gives a chance for knowing beyond the curriculum and the text books theories through
the mode of “learning by doing”, instead of “learning by listening”.
at present there are 43 jkcs in 23 districts with 164 participating colleges and 40 it companies in
the state. . the following is the performance of jkc during the last 2 yeas.

from the next academic year, i.e., 2006-2007, the jkc concept will be initiated in 11 reputed degree
colleges for the benefit of 3rd year degree students.
a 2-week residential intensive training by infosys to 50 mentors of jkc and 50 faculty members of
jkc participating colleges, who will in turn give training to 12900 students of engineering. along
the same lines training program based on products of oracle ibm & microsoft is being imparted.
• a special program for unemployed graduates named finishing school initiative is also
proposed throughout the state. in this concept, the candidates will be trained in the lines
of j.k.c with more focus on industry grade skills and will be placed in companies.
• provision of it employment:
in order to achieve the set target of providing employment to 2,35,000 graduates (target 3,00,000-
