The next portion of the Savitri I am going to discuss is as follows.

A power of fallen boundless self awake

Between the first and the last Nothingness,
Recalling the tenebrous womb from which it came,
Turned from the insoluble mystery of birth
And the tardy process of mortality
And longed to reach its end in vacant Nought.
As in a dark beginning of all things,
A mute featureless semblance of the Unknown
Repeating for ever the unconscious act,
Prolonging for ever the unseeing will,
Cradled the cosmic drowse of ignorant Force
Whose moved creative slumber kindles the suns
And carries our lives in its somnambulist whirl.

MEANINGS OF SOME DIFFICULT WORDS

Tenebrous = Dark and gloomy, Obscure.

Semblance = Outward or token appearance or form, an erroneous mental representation, Picture

consisting of a graphic image of a person or thing.

Cradle = an infants bed => Cradled = Hold gently and carefully, Bring up from infancy.

Kindle = enlighten.

Somnambulism = Sleep Walking => Somnambulist = inconscience, or unconscious, or mechanical.

Please recall our last conclusion that “A huge foreboding mind of Night” is “Across the path of
Divine event” and also that Sri Aurobindo is comparing this nescient night o a dark woman, and this
dark woman is obstructing the forth-coming creation.

A power of fallen boundless self awake

Between the first and the last Nothingness,
Recalling the tenebrous womb from which it came,

Now “Between the first and last Nothingness”, a power of this dark woman (fallen boundless self),
awakes, that too “Recalling the tenebrous womb from which it came”. Here first and last
Nothingness between the end and destruction of previous creation and the start of the new one.
These three lines suggest that the dark woman or this nescient Night has a nightmare, where it is
recalled the tenebrous (= Dull) origin, which is the destruction of the last creation.
Turned from the insoluble mystery of birth
And the tardy process of mortality
And longed to reach its end in vacant Nought.

After having such a nightmare, when it knew its origin, it “Turned from the insoluble mystery of the
birth, And the tardy process of mortality”. That is the subconscient mind of this dark woman = huge
foreboding mind of Night, gives up the thought of dominating the process of tardy process of
mortality = creation and longed (= deepest desire) to reach its end (= termination or destruction of
this inconscient Night) in the vacant Nought, that is fathomless zero which occupied the world, that
is last Nothingness. Why is to come to an end? Because it is not the power of fallen boundless
self that can take up the task of creation, creation of the universe, it is the unfallen
Transcendent Power of Omnipotent can do it. (Transcendent = Supreme)

Now next lines are of high importance.

As in a dark beginning of all things,

A mute featureless semblance of the Unknown

These two lines once again recall that the Presence of the Supreme Divine is still there in the
Nescient Night. “As in a dark beginning of all things”, that is before the creation “A mute
featureless semblance of the unknown” that is the presence of the Supreme Divine is there. Here The
Supreme Divine is referred as Unknown, because at this instance there is no one conscious to
understand or know him.

Repeating for ever the unconscious act,

Prolonging for ever the unseeing will,
Cradled the cosmic drowse of ignorant Force
Whose moved creative slumber kindles the suns
And carries our lives in its somnambulist whirl.

Then under this Presence of Supreme Divine, something, which is indefinable, stirs the depths of her
ignorance, which is an unconscious act, and Repeating this unconscious act forever, she brings into
existence our material universe.
Then “Prolonging for ever the unseeing will” she cradles the cosmic (= universal) drowse (= sleep)
of ignorant Force. “Whose moved creative slumber kindles the suns” that is the slumber
(=appearance) is given a creative movement, which kindles (=enlightens) the suns in this material
universe, and also she “carries our lives in its somnambulist whirl” which exactly means we all are
were predestined – well before the creation itself – to be born like this.

CONCLUSION

Therefore we can conclude that under the presence of the Supreme Divine, in the Night of
Ignorance, under the influence of Transcendent Power of Supreme, the Material Universe came into
existence through an act of somnambulism.
