t seems to be the season for showing appreciation for good work, as we have honored an employee from Community Care Connections as the Butler County Employees of the Year during our Employee Appreciation Luncheon. We will also soon be honoring two Butler County Citizens with the Distinguished Service Award. The Junior Award Recipient is well deserving and community involved Nicole Bronder-Robinson. Jocelyn Howard-Sinopoli, C.W. Howard Insurance Agency, an overachieving volunteer who is active in numerous community projects and a generous philanthropist, will be honored as Senior Recipient. June will see 22 business leaders from the Four Corners of Butler County recognized for completing this years Leadership Butler County program session, as we combine their graduation with the United Way of Butler Countys Annual Meeting and Volunteer Recognition. During this program, we will also partner with ARMSTRONG in announcing the 2011 Red Apple award winners for excellence in education at all levels. In July we will recognize the Freeport Trail Initiative as a Chamber Community Champion for collective organization achievement. During our Celebrate Business Annual Dinner in September, we honor a Chamber Business Champion as well as the recipient of the William A. Morgan Jr. Entrepreneur of the Year Award. The high number of nominees in each of the above contests is a very optimistic indication of the high level of involvement in both the work and volunteer environments. Our Chamber is evidence of this trend towards working together for a common goal. So far this year we have educated, rewarded, networked, mixed, dined, lunched, open-housed, ribbon-cut, affiliated and coordinated numerous times involving thousands of business people. Our committees have become so well chaired that their operations not only reflect, but also enhance our image in the business community. New ideas and new projects are constantly being discussed, implemented and fine-tuned. To me, it is obvious that together we do these things not necessarily for the Award which might be involved, but more commonly for the Reward we receive from our actions. The Butler County Chamber of Commerce has been the proud recipient of these rewards since it was founded in 1896. However, it has become increasingly important during the past few years as other venues have seen a decline in involvement. Once again we realize that we have one of the strongest and most involved memberships of any organization in Butler County. While other events remain stagnant and unattended, we reach capacity crowds consistently and enthusiastically. While sponsorships for a variety of venues are declining, ours remain consistent. As we offer support and collaboration to numerous organizations and activities such as the Spring Garden Market and the new Jeep Festival this summer, I remind our business members that we are indeed seen as the lead agency either in establishing and conducting events, or in serving as partners and support services for a wide variety of community activities. For this I must once again thank the membership of the Butler County Chamber of Commerce. Without you, we cease to exist. Without your support, we stop growing. Without your involvement, we remain at a standstill. The Board of Directors and Officers thank you for your faith in our organization and your creative ideas and support.

American Legion Post 778, Lyndora, PA
oining the Butler Chamber of Commerce was a pretty easy decision by the general membership of the American Legion, Michael Kosar Post 778, in Lyndora. After a quick study of everything the chamber is active with, the members felt they wanted to be part of it. Rich Riley, a member of the Post, said that being an organization dedicated to veteran and community service, joining the chamber was a natural fit. Our hope is to get more involved with other service organization with the help of the chamber. Post 778 sits on 22 acres of ground on the top of Lyndora Hill with a great view of Butler. Besides the great banquet hall (seats 350 with full kitchen), there are three large pavilions that provide plenty of space for any organization looking for an outdoor venue. The organization is always looking for new members. If youre a veteran and looking for a way to continue to serve, please visit Post 778, and well put you to work! For more information, please contact the American Legion Post 778, Lyndora, at 724.287.3022 for more information.

unger is a serious problem that demands the attention of all who care about the future of Southwestern Pennsylvania. Hard evidence exists to show that reducing hunger now and providing for its continuing reduction in the future will bring tremendous benefits to our region. These benefits include a capable and fit workforce, lowered costs of social services and health care, improved educational achievement, and increased economic growth not to mention an improved quality of life for hundreds of thousands of Pennsylvanians. Its time to close the gap. In September 2010, the Southwestern PA Food Security Partnership was created when a group of volunteers from all walks of life in our region joined a task force dedicated to the proposition that 400,000 people confronting food insecurity in our area is unacceptable, from any ethical or practical perspective. This partnership is an initiative of the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. On June 2, 2011, there will be a regional dialogue and kickoff meeting of the partnership in order to share the current status of hunger in our region and for each county to begin identifying their strengths and gaps surrounding the issue of hunger. The meeting will take place at Westmoreland County Community College at 145 Pavilion Lane in Youngwood, PA 15697, from 8:00 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. For more information, please contact Janet Elder, Regional Coordinator, Food Security Partnership, at 412.901.0471 or jelder@pittsburghfoodbank.org .

Often, they are challenged by unfamiliarity with local professional networks and opportunities for contributing their skills and experience. To address this need, the Immigrants and Internationals Advisory Council of the Allegheny County Department of Human Services in collaboration with The Three Rivers Workforce Investment Board, is establishing a Refugee Career Mentoring Program. The Refugee Career Mentoring Program provides the opportunity for local professionals to mentor newcomers

By matching professionals, they can provide refugees from similar fields with the support and knowledge they need to put them on the path to successful professional employment.
