Written by: Alyssa Pietrandrea wenty-three Leadership Butler County (LBC) graduating business professionals will be honored in Founders Hall at Butler County Community College on Wednesday, June 15, 2011. The event will begin at 7:30 a.m. and is held in cooperation with the United Way of Butler Countys Annual Meeting and the Armstrong Red Apple Award in Education. Leadership Butler County is a leadership program which aims to bring together the perspectives of both local and regional presenters, authorities on local issues and volunteers. The program, which is completed in a nine-month time frame, focuses on building the skills necessary to become an effective community leader and exposes participants to issues, resources and opportunity in the Butler area. Leadership Butler County works in partnership with Butler County Community College, Slippery Rock University, Butler County Tourism & Convention Bureau and the United Way of Butler County. LBC is an affiliate program of the Butler County Chamber of Commerce. SRU Students Join Butler County Chamber For Summer Internship

lexis Kovski, a student at Slippery Rock University, is enthusiastic to join the Butler County Chamber of Commerce as a summer intern. Kovski is a Communication Major and has a minor in Psychology. Kovski is a member of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA), and holds the photo editor position on the school newspaper, The Rocket. At SRU, she is also involved with the University Program Board and Slippery Rock Universitys Relay for Life. Kovski is currently a junior and plans to graduate in May, 2013, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication. Kovski is looking forward to working at the Butler County Chamber of Commerce to gain more work experience and some hands-on learning outside of the classroom throughout her internship. She hopes to learn more about the non-profit sector and how businesses interact and support each other, while gaining skills in event planning and promotion. She will be working on many projects and events for the Butler County Chamber including the Annual Golf Outing, Ladies Golf Outing, the Chambers monthly newsletter, The Edge, and additional public relations projects. Kovski believes that the experience she receives at the Chamber will help her become a successful professional in a desired field in the future. Written By: Alyssa Pietrandrea Alyssa Pietrandrea, a Slippery Rock University student, is enthusiastic about joining the Butler County Chamber of Commerce as a summer 2011 intern. Pietrandrea is a Communication Major with an emphasis in public relations and has a minor in nonprofit management. Pietrandrea has been involved with SRUs student-operated radio station, WSRU 88.1 FM, since her first semester in college. She currently holds the position of Staff Representative at WSRU and has been on the Deans List for the last three semesters. While at SRU, she has also been involved with the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) and the Nonprofit Student Association. Pietrandrea will be a senior in the fall of 2011 and will be graduating in May, 2012, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Public Relations. Pietrandrea is anticipating gaining experience in the field of public relations and also is hoping to acquire new skills in the business aspects of a non-profit organization during her internship at the Butler County Chamber. She also hopes to help the Chamber in as many ways as possible this summer using the communication skills she has already acquired at SRU. ESM News

SM SMT is pleased to report the inauguration of the new Atomized Magnesium Metal Powder production facility which was held April 27, 2011, at its Saxonburg, PA location. The new atomization plant produces fine and ultrafine spherical magnesium powders, essential ingredients for military countermeasures (flares) that are used to protect aircraft from missiles. It will provide the U.S. Department of Defense with a much-needed second source for critical countermeasure applications. Production will start mid year with test shipments early in the third quarter. In 2010, SKW (the parent company) and ESM management decided to establish a new division ESM Special Metals and Technology (ESM SMT) adding focus and resources in order to grow its non-steel industry business. ESM SMT is headed by Dr. Hartmut Meyer-Grunow and brings new production with the latest technology both in quality and safety to the marketplace.

Butler County Symphony Association Names Officers

Written By: Alexis Kovski ongratulations to the new officers who will serve the Butler County Symphony Association for the 2011-2012 season, who were named on May 3, 2011, at the Annual Association Meeting. In the upcoming season, Ron McKissick will serve as President, Patti Donaldson was elected VicePresident, Stephanie Maharg was elected Secretary, and Bryan Stevenson will serve as Treasurer. The 63rd season of the Butler County Symphony Orchestra will open on Saturday October 8, 2011, at the Butler Intermediate High School. The seasons concert schedule will be announced shortly, and anyone wishing to obtain information may contact the Symphony office at 259 South Main Street in Butler, or call the Symphony office at 724.283.1402. VNA Hospice To Present Workshop For Seniors And Their Caregivers

The inauguration was attended by over 50 local, state and federal dignitaries. Pictured in the attached photo is Joe Taylor of Armstrong, the incoming Butler County Chamber of Commerce chairman; Chairman of the Clinton Township Supervisor Mary Zacherl; Chairman of the Butler County Commissioners Dale Pinkerton; Dr. Hartmut Meyer-Grunow president of ESM SMT; Ines Kolmsee, chief executive officer of SKW Stahl-Metallurgie Holding, ESMs Germany-based parent company; Michael Mohr of AMSJM-ISP; Rock Island Arsenal; Gen. Michael Ryan, Ret.; and Ken Raybuck of the Community Development Corporation of Butler County. ESM has been a part of the fabric of this community for as long as I can remember, Zacherl said. You have hired township residents and helped the countys economy, and I thank you for your vision and commitment to Clinton Township. Construction for the first phase of the +7 million dollar new facility, a 4,200 square foot building, began in October, 2010. The new facility was paid for by ESM and did not receive any government subsidies or incentives to build it. ESM SMT is looking forward to expanding employment in line with the growing demand and sales of the new product line. The company is confident that the diversification will help the employment base in Saxonburg, PA, and provide prospects for future growth.

The program, sponsored by the Visiting Nurse Association Hospice (VNA Hospice), will begin at 7:00 p.m. and answer questions on topics such as: adding your childrens names to the deed on your house, financial answers to questions regarding the possibility of a loved one moving into a nursing home, Power of Attorney, living trusts, and Last Will and Testament inquiries. ow new and improved, the Butler City Farmers Market offers local, fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, eggs, baked goods and a variety of seasonal plants and flowers. Starting in May, the market will be open on Saturdays from 7:30 a.m. to Noon and will have additional expanded hours in June on Mondays and Wednesdays from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The Butler City Farmers Market is located on the intersections of Chestnut, Race and Shore Streets in downtown Butler. The opportunity for customers to sign up for the Northwest Pennsylvania Growers Co-op Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program is a brand new feature this year for the Butler City Farmers Market. Customers participating in this program will enjoy fresh, local vegetables that can be picked up at the Farmers Market on Wednesdays from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. More information on this program can be found at www. npagrowers.com. If you found gently-used clothes and shoes during your spring cleaning that you would like to donate to a worthy cause, look for the yellow PlanetAid donation boxes, open for community use, at one of five locations - Chicora Medical Center, Fair Winds Manor, Sugar Creek Rest, Trinity Living Center or Quality Life Services. All four nursing homes, encompassed by their parent company, Quality Life Services, are offering this service for their employees, residents, families and the community so that those who are less fortunate can have clothing and shoes to wear. All of the boxes are located at easy access parking areas so that donations can be collected approximately once a week. Quality Life Services requests that all donations are in bags before they are put into a PlanetAid box. Susie Tack-Beardsley, Chief Administrative Officer of Quality Life Services, says that caring is our purpose, so we should take care of those who dont have the resources to supply themselves with clothing and shoes. Power and Associates 2011 Retail Banking Customer Satisfaction Survey. The January study analyzed overall customer satisfaction with their retail banking experience based on six factors: account activities, account information, facility, fees, problem resolution, and product offering. Northwest received the highest satisfaction score in the Mid-Atlantic Region. The 2011 ranking reflects the results of surveys conducted with nearly 52,000 banking customers nationally. Written By: Alyssa Pietrandrea ith todays ever-changing employment concerns, business professionals need a few questions answered in order to fully grasp the associated concepts. The Butler Human Resources Association (BHRA) and the Butler County Chamber of Commerce hosted another successful forum, which covered Understanding (and Surviving) Todays Fast-Changing World of Employment and Labor Law. The event took place on Wednesday, May 18, 2011, from 8:00 a.m. until Noon at the Succop Theater, on the campus of Butler County Community College. The forum included breakfast and a vendor expo featuring 12 exhibitors, keynote speakers and two breakout sessions.

The BHRA and Chamber welcomed two representatives from Tucker Arensberg, P.C. to serve as the keynote speakers at this event. Albert S. Lee, a Shareholder of Tucker Arensberg, presented Its A New World beginning at 9:15 a.m. This keynote presentation gave attendees a guided tour of the many significant developments and changes that the world of employment and labor law has seen in the past year. Katherine E. Koop, an attorney at the law firm of Tucker Arensberg, P.C., also spoke at the event. In addition to the keynote presentation, attendees were given the option to participate in breakout sessions. The first was entitled The Department of Labor is Back in the Enforcement Business: How To Not Be A Regular Customer, and covered the key elements and principles of wage and hour law, and practical strategies for minimizing risks and exposure in an organization. The Office is A-twitter: How to Manage the Many TechnologyRelated Issues that Have Come Into the Workplace provided practical tips to analyze and deal with wide-ranging and quick-changing technology issues. Annual Spring Garden Market Welcomed Over 3,000 Visitors!

espite a few sprinkles and some gray clouds, the Annual Spring Garden Market & Home Show welcomed an overwhelming crowd of visitors on Saturday, May 14, 2011, at The Succop Conservancy. Hosted by the Penn State Master Gardeners of Butler County, Butler County Chamber of Commerce and The Succop Conservancy, the event transported guests to a delightful outdoor garden and business expo customized to help them welcome spring! Over 3,000 visitors attended. Eighty vendors featured plant sales, landscaping materials, crafts, business information and more. Visitors enjoyed a variety of delicious foods including baked goods, gourmet coffees and ice cream, wine tasting and the famous Master Gardeners homemade soups, pies and Mushroom Sandwiches. Be A Friend Of The Festival!
Bantam Jeep Heritage Festival is August 12-14

early 1,000 Jeeps will be making their way into Butler between August 12 and 14, 2011, to participate in the first-ever Bantam Jeep Heritage Festival, and now, Butler businesses and individuals are being asked to help support the event by becoming a Friend of the Festival! Butler artist Tom Panei was chosen by the Butler County Tourism and Convention Bureau to create an original painting to celebrate the inaugural Bantam Jeep Heritage Festival. Only 200 signed and numbered prints were produced, and those who contribute $100 to join the inaugural Friends of the Festival will receive one of those prints, along with an engraved plaque and commemorative Festival pin. These prints will be collector items because we will create a new painting each year to represent the Festival, said Jack Cohen, president of the Bureau. We are producing only a limited number of the prints so those who wish to support the Festival have something truly special to display. Tom Panei has gained notoriety in the area because many of his contemporary paintings feature a Jeep. This new piece is no exception, because it features two Bantam Jeeps and an off-road Jeep that appear to be traveling down a road. The painting also features the Bantam factory and a stylized version of the American flag. This is an opportunity for the Butler community to get involved and own a new piece of Butler jeep history, said Cohen.
