VATICANS ADDRESS TO U.N. ON CLIMATE CHANGE

WILL IMPACT FIRST AND FOREMOST THE POOREST AND WEAKEST
NEW YORK, MAY 11, 2007 (Zenit.org).- Here is the address Archbishop Celestino Migliore, the Holy Sees permanent observer to the United Nations, delivered May 10 to the 15th session of the U.N. Commission on Sustainable Development of the Economic and Social Council on Turning Political Commitments Into Action, Working Together in Partnership. *** Mr. Chairman, While my delegation congratulates you and your bureau on your appointment, it sincerely hopes that all delegations will work with the greatest flexibility to achieve as much as we can in this policy year. The debate during this session and the work of the preparatory committee and last years Commission on Sustainable Development have all demonstrated the strongly interconnected nature of the four themes chosen for this cycle, and how they may have ample repercussions both on national and international security and on the capacity of the international community to confront seriously the problems of poverty and the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals. The interconnections become even stronger when we consider that, ultimately, the earth is our common heritage and we have a grave and far-reaching responsibility to ourselves and to future generations for the actions we are due to take here. It should be added that the need for joint action at the international level does not lessen the responsibility of individual states. Mr. Chairman, the question of energy is rapidly becoming one of the key questions of the entire international agenda, as all of us struggle to assemble a common, global, long-term energy strategy, capable of satisfying legitimate short- and medium-term energy requirements, ensuring energy security, protecting human health and the environment, and establishing precise commitments to address the question of climate change. The scientific evidence for global warming and for humanitys role in the increase of greenhouse gasses becomes ever more unimpeachable, as the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change findings are going to suggest; and such activity has a profound relevance, not just for the environment, but in ethical, economic, social and political terms as well. The consequences of climate change are being felt not only in the environment, but in the entire socioeconomic system and, as seen in the findings of numerous reports already available, they will impact first and foremost the poorest and weakest who, even if they are among the least responsible for global warming, are the most vulnerable because they have limited resources or live in areas at greater risk. We need only think of the small island developing states as one example among many. Many of the most vulnerable societies, already facing energy problems, rely upon agriculture the very sector most likely to suffer from climatic shifts. Thus, in order to address the double challenge of climate change and the need for ever greater energy resources, we will have to change our present model from one of the heedless pursuit of economic growth in the name of development, toward a model which heeds the consequences of its actions and is more respectful toward the creation we hold in common, coupled with an integral human development for present and future generations. The complexity of the promotion of sustainable development is evident to all; there are, however, certain underlying principles which can direct research toward adequate and lasting solutions. Humanity must become increasingly conscious of the links between natural ecology, or respect for nature, and human ecology. Experience shows that disregard for the environment harms human co-existence, while at the same time it becomes clearer that there is a positive link to be made between peace with creation and peace among nations.

(MONDAY, JULY 16, 2007)

Not so long ago, the Security Council had a meeting to discuss the relationship between energy, security and climate. While not everyone agrees upon the discussion of such material in the Security Council, the sobering fact is that we are already witnessing struggles for the control of strategic resources such as oil and fresh water, both of which are becoming ever scarcer. If we refuse to build sustainable economies now, we will continue to drift toward more tensions and conflicts over resources, to say nothing of threatening the very existence of coastal peoples and small island states. Recently, we have heard of economies that have managed to grow while actually reducing their consumption of energy. Surely this success holds out hope that our current economic model does not always oblige us to use more and more energy in order to grow. Economic growth does not have to mean greater consumption. From the standpoint of a sustainable economy, it does however mean that we will need technology, ingenuity, determined political will and common sense. Importantly, it will also demand technology transfer to developing countries, to the benefit of the entire global community. But even technology, its transfer and political will to collaborate at the international level are not enough: to all that we must add national education schemes that will lead all of us without exception to approach our daily patterns of consumption and production in a very different way and to demand a similar change throughout construction, transport, businesses and other institutions. Through such education, states can help their citizens grasp the urgency of what must be done, teaching them in turn to expect and demand a very different approach to their own consumption and that around them. Worldwide, unprecedented ecological changes are already taking place and none of us can foresee fully the consequences of mans industrial activity over the recent centuries. Remedies are not beyond our ingenuity, but we should however be careful not to choose a path that will make things worse, especially for the poor. We cannot simply uninvent the modern world, but there is still time to use technology and education to promote universally sustainable development before it is too late. Thank you, Mr. Chairman.

REFLECTION ON THE READINGS OF THE 29TH SUNDAY ORDINARY TIME YR. A _________________
REV. FR. GERARDO P. ARROYO, PAROCHIAL VICAR
Christians as we are, as long as we live in this world, we do not belong exclusively to the Kingdom of God but we also belong to the earthly kingdom. God has placed us in a family. He then put our family in a society which, in turn, is a conglomeration of families that comprises the earthly kingdom. As it is the will of God that we will abide by the rule of His Kingdom, it is His will too that we must submit to the laws of this earthly society where we also belong. The import of Jesus reply, however, did not find rest on these two reasons but went deeper. Being subjected to a foreign power is inopportune, was what Jesus in effect saying to his listeners, however, it does not obliterate mans interior freedom. It is only sin that makes man in actuality a slave. The Jews by denying God His due at present as what their forefathers did in the past sited them in a condition of slavery. Had they gave God what is due to Him surely their present state of affairs is upturned -they would have entered Gods Kingdom, way ahead of anybody. What shall we do then? Turning to Peter and Paul, they are of great help to us as we seek Gods guidance in this particular quandary. Through their letters to the Christian communities they have founded, these men reminded the latter that they should have to obey lawfully constituted authorities. (Rm.13:1; 1Pt2:13-14) They have to pray for them. (1Tim2:1-2) Finally, they have to pay lawful taxes. (Rm. 13:7) When Peter was standing before the questioning Sanhedrin responded: ...we must obey God rather than men, he meant that when the orders of those in authority go against Gods law, Christians have the right to disobey. Thousands of Christians during this time and thereafter gave up their lives rather than to offer incense to the statues of the pagan emperors. We live in a world of the haves and the have nots, in a society of whom we know not in what we know, in an environment of Lupos homo hominis, and in a social order of might is right. We are in a civilization where injustice and various kinds of evil thrive and contend for our attention. We could not ignore that some of those in authority are good yet many are wicked. We also know, however, that God is wise and powerful enough to guide parsons and events to obtain His aim of saving us, as He used Cyrus shown in the first reading. As Christians, our life in a society must be directed in a way that people as they see us may feel attracted to Jesus, as Isaiah tells says: so that toward the rising and the setting of the sun, men may know that there is none beside me (Yahweh).

There are times that we find ourselves being pulled together as if we are in a tug of war by the forces of these two Kingdoms. As a consequence, we are perplexed and confused. We are at the mercy of these two conflicting forces vying for our attention. In todays readings, Jesus comes to us to teach us how to serve God and Caesar on how to live as true citizens both of His Kingdom and our own country. Jesus was known in Palestine as a moral teacher. It was no big deal if every now and then he was consulted on moral matter and this includes whether the Jews have to pay taxes to a foreign power. The Jews in this case were in a dilemma: Do they have to pay taxes to the foreigners or not? If they do, they are acknowledging the dominance of a foreign power over them. Thus, denying Yahweh who alone was their king. If they do not, they are inviting political, as well as, religious problems. Those who posed this problem to Jesus were expecting to catch Him off guard without any escape route. It was a cleverly set trap. If Jesus would answer Yes, He is going against the common sentiment of the people. If No, His enemies would report the matter to the Roman authority. In the final analysis, it was human naivety to think that God would fall into the trap set by him. The response of Jesus: Repay to Cesar what belongs to Cesar and to God what belongs to God, was not a rejoinder to their question. First, it was a euphuism that He doesnt want to join in the fray. He had not time for useless talks. His mission was to bring more people to submit to Gods kingdom which is of critical importance than anything else. Second, it was a manner of aphorism that since the Jews used to their advantage the money that was Cesars, they have no reason why they should refuse the former the taxes he asks which after all was for the common good.

We apologize for the misprint of Fr. Gerrys Reflection last weeks issue of Wings!

Erratum et Corregendum

REFLECTION ON THE READINGS OF THE 28TH SUNDAY ORDINARY TIME YR. A _____________
REV. FR. GERARDO P. ARROYO, PAROCHIAL VICAR

During biblical times, banquets, especially wedding banquets, among the members of the Semitic tribes, meant two things. First, they are signs of friendship. Second, they are occasions for rejoicing and happiness. Todays first reading taken from the Book of the prophet Isaiah gives us one of the most astonishing promises God ever made a feast truly worthy of Him. This feast is characterized by a total happiness and the invitees are not limited to His Chosen People- the Jews but to the whole humanity and of all ages. A close look at this feast, we can sense that it is of out the worldly nature As such, no ordinary human person could afford to host such kind of a banquet. Only God can afford to host such banquet. In the gospel reading, we have the Parable of the Wedding Banquet told by Jesus to his listeners. This is the third parable told by Jesus in his ultimate effort to persuade and win over to His side the leaders of the Jews; thus, saving them. Like the two preceding parables that we heard these past two Sundays, this third parable also contains two very vital messages. The first one was addressed to the Jews who were then listening to Jesus at that time and the second to the Christians of all generations. The first message Matthew had in mind was his fresh appeal to the Jews to join the Church as symbolized by the banquet. At the same time reminding them of Jesus warning that those who refused the invitation will face grave consequences - forever they will be exclude from the Kingdom of God and Jerusalem and its Temple will be destroyed. Secondly, to Matthews own Christian community, as well as, to the Christians of all times and this includes us. We who are invited into His banquet but ungarbed in the proper dress code will face the same consequence as that of the Jews.

God, in bringing us into His Kingdom, has exhibited a great and compassionate love for all of us. This divine gratuitous act demands from us twofold collaboration. We must be vigilant and we must hasten to change the filthy rags of sin for the clean garment of a holy life. The first collaboration with Gods grace has already taken place when we received the Sacrament of Baptism. The second one is done by remaining vigilant by a constant cleansing our soul through repentance whenever we soil our garment by committing sin. This is done through the Sacrament of Reconciliation. When the man in the parable was questioned by the King why he wasnt in the proper dress code, he remained silent. He cant give any valid reason as an excuse for his soiled clothes for the custom of the time demands that the rich people like the King gives free of cost wedding garments to any invitee who could not afford such an attire. So too with a Christian who died in the state of grave sin has no valid excuse for the state of his soul. In Baptism, Jesus has not only cleansed us of our sins but has clothed us with a garment of a new life the LIFE in the SPIRIT. This is a gratuitous GIFT free of charge from Jesus a gift which He purchased for us all at the cost of His blood. One thing is very sure for all of us Christians of all generations the King will come and certainly He will at the time when we least expect Him. We will witness how He will expel from His banquet anybody whose dress is filthy anyone who is found unfit to be in His Kingdom on account of serious sin. We should be grateful to the Church for her repeated warnings not only Sunday after Sunday but day after day urging and prodding us to live as Gods loving and obedient children at all times. Thus, the question that we should ask ourselves is that, Are we properly attired as we join Him in His banquet? This includes our attire as we attend the daily and Sunday Masses. Masses are nothing but foreshadowing of that Great Banquet that awaits us in the near future.
Augustine the Doctor of Grace was right as he said, God who made us without us wont save us without us.

A PRIEST IS ALWAYS WRONG BECAUSE...

Posted by Jayarathina Madharasan Friday, December 12, 2008 at 9:09 PM

If he begins his mass on time, his watch is advanced; If he begins a minute later, he keeps people waiting If he preaches too long, he makes people get bored; If his homily is too short, he is unprepared. If he owns a car, he is luxurious; If he does not own one, he does not go with the times. If he goes out to visit families, he is always out: If he does not, he has no time for them. If he asks for donations, he is a moneymaker; If he does not do it, he is too proud and lazy. If he takes time in the confessional, he is too slow; If he makes it too fast, he has no time for his penitents. If he renovates the church, he throws away money; If he does not do it, he allows everything to rot away. If he is with the youth, he forgets the old. If he is seen with women, he is a playboy; If he goes with men, he is not normal; If he is young, he has no experience; If he is old, he should retire. As long as he lives, there are always people who are better than him; BUT IF THE PRIEST DIES.... THERE IS NOBODY TO TAKE HIS PLACE!

Sang pagkakita sang Obispo, iya ginhimutaran ang bilog nga larawan kag ang iya nahauna nga komentaryo amo: Tonying, this is the work of art and inspiration. Akon kabigon nga ini ang nahauna nga milagro nga ginhimo sang Mahal nga Birhen Maria. Siya nagdugang pa gid nga ini amo ang modest representation sang Mahal nga Birhen Maria.
