File Transfer Protocol (FTP) For Mac OS 9 and OS X

General Information:
File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is the ability to copy files over the Internet between a local system (your computer) and a remote system (a computer elsewhere). This service is especially useful to UWF students, faculty and staff who wish to store and access files in their Home folder (H: drive) or Web folder (I: drive) from another location. The Home folder is used for storing documents while the Web folder stores files for the purpose of web page hosting. Your Home and Web folders are your H: and I: drives respectively in an ArgoNet lab. Many clients use FTP when dialing in from home or when working in another computer lab or from an office workstation on campus that is not part of ArgoNet. In order to use FTP service you must have FTP client software. Information Technology Services (ITS) recommends and primarily supports WS_FTP LE for Windows and Fetch for Macintosh. You may download this software free from SoftServ at http://nautical.uwf.edu/office/softserv. Select Fetch and follow the installation steps or click Questions and Answers for instruction. In order to use the software, you must have a connection to the Internet and Mac OS 9 or OS X. Installing Fetch: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Go to http://nautical.uwf.edu/office Click SOFTSERV, and then select Fetch. Click on CONTINUE at the bottom of the page. Enter your NAUTICAL/COMPASS ID or SSN and your four-digit PIN. Select Fetch 4.0.3 Click on Agree at the bottom of the next page. A Save As Fetch.hqx window will appear. Once you have clicked OK to save, the download may take up to 10 minutes to complete. Once the download has finished, close the Internet connection. Note: You should close all active applications prior to installing the program. To unpack the .hqx file, you will need Aladdins StuffIt Expander. Install the program by double clicking the Fetch.hqx file. (This unpacks the file.) Drop the subsequent executable into your Application folder.
