With vaccination procedures becoming so important on the delivery of efficacious vaccines to highly specialised and often costly birds, water quality, water distribution and ock behaviour must be therefore ensured. AviBlue is an effervescent granulate with an improved solubility formula, reducing negative effects of tap water and visualising the ow of water in the drinking line. AviBlue was designed in conjunction with LAH Director of Production and Process Development Dr Klaus-Uwe Schwarz, Mr Helge Nestler from New Business Development at the Feed Additives Department and Director of Technical Services Dr Michael Iburg.

NEW WATER STABILISER

Dr Schwarz explains that AviBlue contains a neutralising agent which buffers the negative effects of hard water or residues of chlorination on vaccination with live virus or bacteria in drinking water for poultry. The deep blue colour given to the vaccine water by AviBlue allows a visualisation of water ow in the drinking line, so the vaccination crew can ensure a homogenous distribution of vaccine throughout the ock, and even on the birds, through observation of stained tongues or crops. The effervescent granules of AviBlue dissolve quickly and autonomously in the drinking water, therefore AviBlue outmatches other granulated products. AviBlue comes as a practical aid to ensure the better utilisation of our live vaccines and protect the investment on high-quality immunogenic products from Lohmann Animal Health. AviBlue is not yet available to all markets worldwide. Currently the product is being utilised in test markets.

LAH GUMBORO VACCINE SEMINAR IN THE NETHERLANDS

A Gumboro Vaccine Seminar for veterinary clients from the Netherlands and Belgium was organised in early November 2005 by Roland Bronneberg (technical support and sales consultant, LAH the Netherlands). The Moreover, this setting was also chosen for creating a relaxed atmosphere to exchange practical experiences and information regarding the Dutch and Belgian poultry (vaccine) market. On Friday afternoon, therefore, clients were offered to join the entertainment programme, which besides quad racing, bow-and-arrow shooting and team-building games, included a dinner afterwards. On Saturday morning, the actual seminar started and the following topics were presented and discussed: Positioning and use of Gumboro vaccines in general by Roland Bronneberg Data from eld trials with broiler ocks in Germany, comparing performance after vaccination with AviPro GUMBORO VAC and a competitor intermediate IBD vaccine, by Dr Michael Iburg (LAHs Technical Support Department)
LAHs intermediate Gumboro vaccines: AviPro Gumboro vac and AviPro Precise

The use of and experience with hot Gumboro vaccines, as well as AviPro GUMBORO VAC and AviPro PRECISE under eld conditions in a poultry-dense area of Germany, by Dr Hermann Block (specialised poultry practitioner in Germany). Dr Thijs van Dijk, from LAHs Marketing Department, was chairman during the seminar. Overall, discussions were numerous, interesting and refreshing, and from various clients point of views. LAH is showing its new face, also in the Netherlands and Belgium working with the Avian Professionals. *Formerly TAD Gumboro vac lyo and TAD Gumboro vac forte.

VENEZUELAN VISITORS AT LAH HEADQUARTERS

From 29 November to 2 December a number of Venezuelan integrators, veterinarians and representatives from authorities visited the Cuxhaven headquarters. The group was accompanied by sales manager Adriana Baruch and technical representative Dr Beatriz Cardoso from Lohmann Animal Health Brazil as well as Rafael Guerra and Virginia Aizpurua from the Venezuelan distributor Binveca. During their stay, the group was not only exposed to an introduction to Lohmann Animal Healths company prole by Anna-Christina Riebau, but also got a deeper insight into the products AviPro SALMONELLA VAC E, AviPro SALMONELLA VAC T and AviPro THYMOVAC from presentations by Dr Thijs van Dijk, Dr Anne Vits and Eduardo Bernardi. Binveca is currently in the process of registering these vaccines for the Venezuelan market. Dr Anne Vits, who lives in Bremen, volunteered to give our guests an exciting and interesting tour through her city. Besides the very valuable technical information the Venezuelans received during their stay in Germany, they also had the chance to be introduced to a typical German custom in Bremen the Christmas market with Glhwein.

IBD XTREME A NEW VACCINE TO COMBAT vvIBD

virulent and able to break through relatively high levels of maternally derived antibodies (MDAs). The young chicks are exposed to a very early eld challenge. Intermediate vaccines cannot be given early enough to protect the chicks. In the time the eld virus is already attacking the chicks, they will still be neutralised by the high levels of MDAs due to their lower breakthrough titre. Only intermediate plus vaccines are able to take early enough to protect the chicks against this early eld challenge. The new intermediate plus vaccine from Lohmann Animal Health against Infectious Bursal Disease, AviPro IBD XTREME, is the right choice to combat vvIBD successfully. With a virus neutralisation (VN) breakthrough titre of approximately 9, it is possible to administer it early enough to protect the young chicks against the early challenge of vvIBD and thereby reduce the mortality in the ock caused by the very virulent virus. AviPro IBD XTREME is a lyophilised live intermediate plus vaccine against IBD containing the Winterfield

Protection against mortality in ducks after challenge with Pasteurella multocida

108 FC4 GOLD PROVES SUCCESS IN THAI DUCKS

AviPro 108 FC4 GOLD, a bacterin against Fowl Cholera containing four different strains of Pasteurella multocida in a novel WOW adjuvant (water-in-oil-in-water) was tested for ducks at the Kasetasart University, in Nakhornpathom, Thailand. The purpose of the trial was to verify efficacy of AviPro 108 FC4 GOLD against a local strain of Pasteurella isolated from an outbreak in ducks in Thailand. One group of 25-day-old ducklings was vaccinated intramuscularly with an autogenous vaccine (produced by the Thai Ministry of Agriculture). Another group was vaccinated intramuscularly (0.25 ml) with the LAH vaccine AviPro 108 FC4 GOLD. At 51 days of age, all groups were inoculated with an intranasal challenge of 0.2 ml of 105 CFU/ml of the local strain. Efficacy was measured as protection against mortality.

The Lohmann vaccine AviPro 108 FC4 GOLD proved to protect against mortality due to challenge by the Thai strain of Pasteurella multocida. This South East Asian trial adds to the features of this innovative product, already used in Central Europe against Pasteurella multocida outbreaks in waterfowl.

page 5 issue two Pasteurella vaccination finally made safe and easy

AviPro 108 FC4 GOLD is one of the new inactivated bacterins from Lohmann Animal Health (together with AviPro 101 Coryza GOLD), which take advantage of the novel WOW adjuvant technology. This special emulsication procedure has allowed us to produce a bacterin utilising water and oil ingredients for adjuvants in a procedure that ensures efficacy but reduces the likelihood of site lesions and reactions. Whereas traditional inactivated vaccines take the water in oil emulsions, utilising at

least 70 % of mineral oil, this new WOW technology reduces the oil proportion to less than 50 % and changes the exterior phase into water. Advantages of the WOW emulsion in a bacterin include lower tissue reactivity; it prevents losses from prostration, stiff necks and pain; no abscesses or granulomas on the injected site; no residues at slaughter and an easier uidity on the operation. For protection of chickens against Fowl Cholera, AviPro 108 FC4 Gold is the rst of its type to be licensed for intra muscular injection. This method provides greater ease of application, allowing for

Antigens in water-in-oil-in-water

one less person on the vaccination crew with reduced risk of injury to the bird and to the personnel (self-injection). Breast vaccination is a less demanding operation, which also costs less.

SWITCHING BACK FROM HOT VACCINES TO PRECISE

% Mortality (Average of 46 days slaughter on both groups)

AviPro PRECISE is ideal for the follow-up of hot vaccines, in order to improve productivity. The practice of utilising hot vaccines to combat vvIBDV is common for the control of these early eld challenges that break through higher levels of maternal antibodies. However, broiler performance may be deteriorated by bursal damage and immuno-suppression. Once the load of eld challenge is reduced through the continuous use of hot vaccines, focus can switch back to improvement of broiler performance. In order to compare production results of broilers vaccinated with a hot vaccine with those birds vaccinated with an intermediate vaccine, a eld trial was conducted in collaboration with a broiler integration in Turkey. The farms included in the trial had a long history of using hot IBD vaccines on their premises, and one of the questions of this trial was to determine whether switching from a hot vaccine to an intermediate one would increase protability of the production. A total of 146,500 birds (Ross 508) were housed on farms with a history of IBD outbreaks and long use of hot vaccines. One group of 5 houses was vaccinated with an intermediate IBD vaccine (AviPro PRECISE), and another group of 6 houses with a hot IBD vaccine (from competitor). Under those conditions, AviPro PRECISE performed better than the competitor hot vaccine, both with regards to mortality and feed conversion, making the (calculated) European Performance Index (EPEF) 13.7 points higher for the LAH vaccine.

TIME FOR T
The success of TAD Salmonella vac T (soon AviPro Salmonella vac T), our live vaccine against Salmonella Typhimurium, is likely to spread from countries which are already utilising it on a regular basis towards a more broad range of areas in the European Union. In December 2005, the Mutual Recognition procedure for the registration of TAD Salmonella vac T was nished, with the approval of all countries requested. The list includes Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Greece, Portugal, Belgium, Slovakia and the Czech Republic. For Italy, in particular, this is a major breakthrough, as no other live vaccines for Salmonella Typhimurium were allowed on the market. A complete safety prole and the support of easy laboratory techniques (such as AviPro Plate) for the differentiation of eld and vaccine strains were all instrumental for the approval of this vaccine under the strict control of European Veterinarian Authorities.
