Library Management System as a SaaS (Software as a Service)

Library Management System:A library management system (LMS), is a system for a library, used to track items owned, orders made, bills paid, and patrons who have borrowed. What is SaaS: SaaS (Software as a Service) is a new concept for delivery of application software through internet instead of installing & running the same on a users computer. The software is running remotely on a web server somewhere and the user access the application using only a web browser. This reduces the up-front cost of purchasing the software, hardware, storage, networking components etc. The SaaS prices are based on a monthly / yearly fee instead of paying for the licensed software packages including their upgrades & updates. SaaS removes the hurdles of providing services like installation, deployment, support, maintenance, upkeep, virus control, regular back up & security etc. Cost of all such services, though unseen, forms a major part of the operational cost. Since the software & data are not stored on users computer, he does not require large data storage facilities. SaaS provides 24x7x365 services. The user can access the application from anywhere at any time provided he has an internet access. SaaS has brought a new revolution in the IT world for use of Software and leading organizations across the globe are switching over to SaaS model from the traditional model for use of software. Benefits of SaaS: Lowers the total cost of ownership Provides accurate and up-to-date knowledgebase Delivers rapid development and deployment Delivers responsive development Delivers improved performance Enables greater customization Delivers the latest code and technology

A Library Management System (LMS) usually comprises a relational database, software to interact with that database, and two graphical user interfaces (one for patrons, one for

staff). LMS separate software functions into discrete programs called modules, each of them integrated with a unified interface. Examples of modules might include: acquisitions (ordering, receiving, and invoicing materials) cataloging (classifying and indexing materials) circulation (lending materials to patrons and receiving them back) serials (tracking magazine and newspaper holdings) the OPAC (public interface for users)

Each patron and item has a unique ID in the database that allows the LMS to track its activity. Libraries use an LMS to order and acquire, receive and invoice, catalog, circulate, track and shelve materials. As the Internet grew, we offer web-based portals where library users can log in to view their account, renew their books, and authenticate themselves for access to online databases. Solution allows Librarians to manage their library online. All resources based on security are well indexed in reputed search engine like google, yahoo, live and more. This enables readers to locate your library based on the resource from across the globe. A great marketing tool for the Libraries. Now every Librarian has access to advanced features for Acquisition, Cataloguing, Customized Report Generation and many more without spending much on procurement of expensive hardware and software. Further the software provides peace of mind to Librarians as their database is completely secured, untouched, tampered, altered and constantly backed up time to time. All these without any human intervention. RSS module enables Libraries to share their data across various blogs, social networks, official sites and more. Readers can access their Library on the move, from anywhere in the world. Readers are constantly updated about o New Arrivals

Readers can query the database and make necessary reservations for the required resources. They can create their own virtual shelf and share them with their colleagues / friends.

Search results can be published on Readers Blog or website using RSS feeds Search local language books using phonetic keyboard Advanced Search enables Readers to find the targeted resource accurately and quickly

Most searched keywords are indexed in TAGs which facilitates Readers to execute a quick search.

Read and Search digital newspapers from across the globe online. ePaper module enables Libraries to provides patrons with an easy-to-use interface to access the most current editions of international and local newspapers and magazines. Your patrons can search any newspaper, use instant translation, select articles in a table of contents and share them with other patrons.

ePaper does not require installation of any software or plug-in and saves delivery costs of print subscriptions, staff resources and shelving space. ePaper is an environmentally friendly solution.

The Library Management System is designed & developed for a receipt and issuance of books in the library along with the students details. The books received in the library are entered in Books Entry form and the new student is entered in the student entry form. When the student wants to get the desired book the same is issued on the availability basis to the student. The issuance and due date for the returning of the book is also entered into the Book Issue form under third menu Book Issue. The student has to pay the fine if any on the basis of no. of days delayed deposit of the book in the library. WEB BASED LIBRARY SYSTEM is a browser based library management system developed in PHP and MySQL. This is a browser based library management system developed in PHP and

MySQL. An online library system which is made for libraries and provides the great option of reserving the books which are present in library. One way to increase the value of the core LMS, is to make it more interoperable with other institutional systems such as an institutional portal or the finance or student record systems. This can be achieved with service oriented architectures, using technologies such as web services. And leaving the core LMS with the same vendor does not mean that the whole process has to stay the same. Libraries can add modules and features to the system such as RFID (radio frequency ID) based self-service systems or vertical search products. Working with other libraries and sharing provision can also help to share the costs, said the study. The software modules are: Acquisitions Cataloging Serials management Circulation Administration OPAC MIS Reports End-of-day process (daily scheduler)

The system allows the creation of open access (OA) institutional repositories compliant with OAI-PMH. It is web-based software and has a multi-tier architecture using Java (a Swingbased librarian's GUI) and J2EE-based application server. It allows seamless bibliographic and authority data import into cataloguing templates. SMTP mail servers can be configured for emails that can be sent from functional modules. These software are Unicode 3.0 compliant and can be made RFID / Bar code compatible. These can be installed on Linux and Windows operating systems.
