Tempers are over negative ads in Va., S.F.

Victory Fund defends attack mailings amid criticism from Cleve Jones, other Democrats
By LOU CHIBBARO JR. lchibbaro@washblade.com
Negative campaign ads were unleashed on behalf of openly gay candidates in Virginia and San Francisco during the past two weeks, raising the ire of LGBT activists and their straight allies. In both cases, the ads were produced as independent expenditures by the Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund, a non-partisan group that raises money and campaigns to help elect openly LGBT candidates across the country

One of the groups ads, issued in the form of a mailing to mostly LGBT voters, targeted Virginia State Sen. Janet Howell (D-Reston), who is being challenged by gay Republican Patrick Forrest, an attorney and former senior ofcial with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. The other ad, also in the form of a mailing, targeted former San Francisco City Attorney Dennis Herrera, who is being challenged in his race for San

Former NFL Commissioner Paul J. Tagliabue and his wife, Chandler Tagliabue, have donated $1 million to Georgetown University for the creation of a new program to assist LGBT students. In a statement released on Oct. 26, the university said the gift will establish the Tagliabue Initiative for LGBT Life: Fostering Formation and Transformation, which will be overseen by Georgetown Universitys LGBTQ Resource Center. The LGBTQ Resource Center, the rst such center at a Catholic university, opened on the Georgetown campus in 2008. The Center is inspired by Catholic and Jesuit principles of respect for the dignity of all and education of the whole person, and we are very pleased to support its services that provide a safe, inclusive and respectful environment for LGBTQ students and promote their acceptance in the entire campus community, the Tagliabues said in the statement. The $1 million gift for the LGBT student life initiative is part of an overall $5 million donation the Tagliabues made to Georgetown University that will fund other university programs such as undergraduate scholarships, including athletic scholarships. Sivagami Shiva Subbaraman, director of Georgetowns LGBTQ Resource Center, called the Tagliabues gift exciting and

Howard County considers trans non-discrimination bill

Four members of the Howard County, Md., Council introduced legislation on Oct. 27 that would prohibit discrimination based on gender identity and expression in the areas of employment, housing, public accommodations, nancing, health and social services and law enforcement. Dana Beyer, executive director of Gender Rights Maryland, a statewide transgender advocacy group, said supporters believe they have enough votes on the Council to pass the legislation. All hard-working people in our state, including transgender people, should have a chance to earn a living and provide for themselves and their families, said Sharon Brackett, board chair for Gender Rights Maryland. Nobody should have to live in fear that they can be legally red for reasons that have nothing to do with their job performance. Among the bills lead supporters is the Howard County chapter of Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG). As parents of transgender children we want the same thing for our children as all parents want: we want them to be happy to get a productive job, and to move out and support themselves, said Catherine Hyde, coordinator of PFLAG Howard Countys Transgender Parent Network. Discrimination against the transgender community is rampant in Maryland, she said. The data shows that one in ve transgender people in Maryland have lost a job because they are transgender, and 12 percent have become homeless. This law is a matter of lifeor-death for many Marylanders, including my child. It is time for Howard County to say enough is enough.

NAACPS Bond endorses Maryland marriage effort

Former NAACP president and civil rights leader Julian Bond became the latest public gure to appear in a video endorsing a soon-to-be-introduced same-sex marriage equality bill in the Maryland Legislature. As Chairman Emeritus of the NAACP I know a little something about ghting for whats right and just, Bond says in the video. Gay and lesbian couples in Maryland have the same values as everyone else: love, commitment and stable families. Sultan Shakir, campaign manager for the same-sex marriage advocacy coalition Marylanders for Marriage Equality, said Bonds participation in the video campaign helps promote the message that all committed couples in Maryland should be protected under the law.

We are grateful such an icon has lent his voice to the campaign at a time when momentum builds for marriage equality in the Free State, Shakir said. A same-sex marriage bill died in the Maryland Legislature earlier this year, but advocates say they are hopeful they have the support to pass it after the legislature convenes for its 2012 session in January. Maryland Gov. Martin OMalley kicked off the video campaign last month. Baltimore Ravens linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo and Baltimore native and Academy Award-winner MoNique recorded their own videos endorsing the marriage equality bill a short time later. Bond states in his video that gays and lesbians should have the same right to marry as the rest of us. Join me and the people in Maryland who support marriage equality. Its the right thing to do.

Democrats criticize Victory Fund attack ads

CON T IN U E D FR OM PAGE 1

Francisco mayor by gay former San Francisco Supervisor Bevan Dufty. Both are Democrats and the two are among 16 candidates running in the hotly contested mayoral race. Victory Fund spokesperson Denis Dison said the mailings to mostly LGBT voters were aimed at informing voters of the gay candidates qualications and their opponents shortcomings as part of a widely used campaign practice in American politics. But the mailings angered some gay Democratic activists in Virginia as well as LGBT Democrats and independents in San Francisco who are backing Herrera. The mailings were signed by Victory Fund president and CEO Chuck Wolfe. In the Virginia mailing, Wolfe cited a Washington Blade story last month that reported Forrest and his supporters had accused the Howell campaign of using gay baiting tactics against Forrest. The Blade story reported that Forrest and his supporters learned that a Democratic Party volunteer approached voters and asked them if they knew that Forrest was gay and allegedly told them he would promote a homosexual agenda in the states public schools. Without mentioning Howell by name, Wolfe stated in his mailing, That kind of divisive campaigning has no place in politics, and its wrong no matter which party does it. Were standing up for Patrick because openly gay voices in politics are far too rare in places like Virginia, and because hell be the only openly LGBT Republican state legislator in America if he wins his campaign, Wolfe said in his campaign mailing, which, under campaign nance rules, was produced independently from the Forrest campaign. Howell told the Blade the Democratic campaign worker was not part of her campaign and acted without authorization and was quickly dismissed from any role in the party dealing with the Howell campaign. Leaders of LGBT Democrats of Virginia, a statewide group, called Howell one of the LGBT communitys strongest straight allies in the Virginia Legislature. The group notes that Democrats are clinging to a razor-thin majority in the State Senate and a defeat for Howell and just one other Democrat would ip the Senate into the control of Republicans, opening the way for passage of anti-gay bills next year and the certain defeat of LGBT-supportive legislation. I get their interest in wanting to endorse a gay candidate, said Terry Mansberger, chair of the Virginia Democratic Partys LGBT Caucus. But I dont think it was necessary to attack Janet Howell, a very supportive LGBT ally. Mansberger said Forrests support for LGBT equality, including same-sex marriage, would make him a welcome addition to the State Senate. But he

called Forrests candidacy ill timed and the Victory Funds support for him irresponsible, saying the ouster of Howell and a GOP takeover of the Senate would be devastating to LGBT equality in Virginia for at least the next two years. David Lampo, president of Log Cabin Republicans of Virginia, a gay group that has endorsed Forrest, disputes that assessment, saying Democrats would likely retain control of the Senate through wins in other races. He said Forrest would be a strong advocate for LGBT rights in the Senate and within the Senates GOP caucus regardless of whether Republicans gain control of the body. In a separate race, Democrat Adam Ebbin, a gay member of the Virginia House of Delegates, is considered the strong favorite to win a seat in the State Senate representing parts of Alexandria, Arlington and Fairfax counties. The Victory Fund has also endorsed Ebbin. Lampo said his group chose not to endorse Ebbins Republican opponent, political newcomer Tim McGhee. Lampo said McGhee declined to endorse proposed legislation to ban discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity for state employees. Similar to Ebbin, Forrest has expressed strong support for the legislation as well as other LGBT-supportive measures, including marriage equality for samesex couples and the repeal of a state constitutional amendment approved by Virginia voters in 2006 that bans same-sex marriage in the state. In a development that LGBT activists see as a positive sign, a third openly gay candidate in Virginia will be on the ballot in the Nov. 8 election. Michael Sutphin, 27, a public affairs coordinator at Virginia Tech University, is running for a seat on the Blacksburg, Va., Town Council. Sutphin is a Virginia Tech graduate and served as president of the colleges LGBT Alliance. He currently serves on the board of Equality Virginia, a statewide LGBT group. Hes among ve candidates running for three seats up for election on the Blacksburg Council. Under the towns election rules, the three candidates receiving the highest number of votes win election to the seats. Sutphin received the endorsement of the Roanoke Times, the regions most prominent daily newspaper.

San Franciscos rst out gay mayor?

In San Francisco, the Victory Fund mailing outraged some LGBT activists who are supporting Herrera, a City Attorney who is considered one of the strongest LGBT-supportive politicians in California. Both Herrera and Dufty, along with most of the other 14 candidates in the mayoral race, are Democrats. Dufty is vying to become the rst openly gay mayor in a city considered to be the nations epicenter of LGBT rights and equality. The Victory Fund, which endorsed him earlier this year, released its campaign mailing against Herrera last month at a time when Herrera was considered Duftys strongest competitor for LGBT votes. The ad includes a brightly colored depiction of a sh impaled on a hook described as a shing lure, which the ad says illustrates how powerful law rms in the city landed lucrative city contracts from the Ofce of the City Attorney, which Herrera headed. The ad, citing news media sources, says at least ve law rms that donated to Herreras campaign for mayor have received a combined total of more than $1.2 million in city contracts. The donors are shing and Dennis Herrera is taking the bait, the ad says. Victory Fund spokesperson Dison said his group produced the ad independently from the Dufty campaign without the approval of or any interaction with Duftys campaign. Dison noted that the practice is used widely by Democrats and Republicans in election campaigns as a means of informing voters of the shortcomings and potential problems of an opponent. Theres some criticism there, but its all coming from people who are involved in local politics and who have their own candidates and old rivalries, Dison said. It gets extremely complicated, but theyre essentially asking us to back off from our support for Bevan Dufty, and were not going to, he said. He is an obviously viable and an experienced candidate, Dison said of Dufty He has been in government for more than 20 years. He has been elected twice to the Board of Supervisors. And the Bay Area Reporter, when they endorsed him, said he is as qualied as anybody in the eld of candidates and its time we elected a gay person as mayor.

The Bay Area Reporter is San Franciscos LGBT community newspaper. The citys two LGBT Democratic Clubs, the Harvey Milk and Alice P. Toklas clubs, endorsed Herrera over Dufty. However, the Toklas Club endorsed Dufty for second choice in a rst-of-its-kind mayoral voting system for San Francisco that allows every voter to select three candidates and designate them as their rst, second and third choice for mayor. San Francisco gay activist Cleve Jones, a collaborator with San Franciscos famed gay leader Harvey Milk in the 1970s and the lead organizer of the 2009 LGBT Equality March on Washington, is supporting Herrera. He said hes outraged over the Victory Funds attack ad targeting Herrera in an effort to boost Duftys candidacy. Jones points to Duftys role as a lead supporter of the appointment of then San Francisco City Administrator Ed Lee as interim mayor in January of this year. At the time, Lee, who became the citys rst Asian-American mayor, promised he would not seek election for a full term. The Board of Supervisors appointed him mayor to ll the unexpired term of Mayor Gavin Newsom, who resigned after winning election as lieutenant governor. Lee upset many of his fellow politicians and city ofcials when he announced he had changed his mind and would enter the mayoral race this year. Many in the Asian-American community along with other supporters urged him to run, saying, among other things, that his role as the citys rst Chinese mayor was historic and he should stay on as mayor beyond his interim appointment. Jones told the Blade that he and other LGBT activists believe Dufty entered the race as Lees stalking horse, with the aim of taking gay votes away from Herrera, who has been viewed as a longstanding champion among gay voters. All of the polls show that Bevan is not placing at all, Jones said. Dufty, in a telephone interview with the Blade on Tuesday, called Jones claims ridiculous. He said that under the new voting system for mayor that gives voters three choices, he believes he has a strong chance of winning the race in the second round of virtual vote counting. Under the new system, if no candidate receives at least 51 percent of the rst choice vote, the candidate with the least number of votes is eliminated and the city counts the second choice votes of that candidate. The process is repeated until a candidate obtains a 51 percent majority. Dufty, who said hes convinced the vote count will go to at least one additional round, points out that he has raised $1.3 million for his campaign, the second highest amount raised after Lee, who raised just under $1.5 million. He said polls showing Lee far ahead of all the other candidates are wrong because the polls cant accurately predict the outcome in the ranked choice voting system.

US Airways ight attendant murdered in Mexico

PHOENIX The FBI announced that Mexican authorities have apprehended a suspect in the murder of Phoenix-based US Airways ight attendant Nick Aaronson, who was found strangled and beaten in his Mexico City hotel room over the weekend. Jose Luis Ramirez, a convicted criminal out of prison on parole, also known as Jos Luis Cuellar and The Shadow, is in custody after being identied on bar and hotel security video, and after a handwriting match with a hotel signin log, according to multiple media reports. Authorities believe the murder was motivated by robbery and Ramirez was apprehended with Aaronsons iPhone, which was GPS tracked. Ramirez has told reporters that he only punched Aaronson, and did not murder him, blaming the death on another individual, a 15-year-old friend also in Mexico City. Aaronson was active in the Phoenix gay advocacy community and participated in the popular NOH8 photo campaign.

USAID asks contractors to protect LGBT workers

Breakthrough as Obama urged to back ENDA-like exec order
By CHRIS JOHNSON cjohnson@washblade.com
A new policy implemented by the U.S. Agency for International Development strongly encourages businesses contracting with the organization to have non-discrimination policies in place for their LGBT workers. The policy, spelled out in an executive message dated Oct. 11, encourages companies contracting with USAID to go beyond mandatory non-discrimination protections including protections based on race, religion and gender and put in place additional policies to prohibit job bias against LGBT employees and other workers. According to the memo, the agency is making the change to encourage all USAID contractors and recipients, including those performing solely overseas, to apply comprehensive nondiscrimination policies that include sexual orientation, gender identity, pregnancy, marital status, parental status, political afliation, and any other conduct that does not affect performance. The memo notes that the change isnt mandatory, so contractors arent bound to have the policies to continue working with USAID. Still, the policy is likely the rst from any U.S. agency encouraging federal contractors to enact non-discrimination policies for LGBT workers. LGBT advocates said the memo is an important step in addressing workplace discrimination, but noted the change doesnt have a lot of teeth. Nan Hunter, a lesbian law professor at Georgetown University who rst posted the new policy on her blog, called the change a breakthrough, but noted it cant be enforced. Technically it isnt enforceable in the sense that a contractor who fails to adopt these policies could be cited as out of compliance, Hunter said. However, it sends a strong signal that such policies are favored, and creates an incentive for any private company that contracts with USAID to conform its policies to this guidance. Tico Almeida, president of Freedom to Work, said USAID deserves credit for observing that taxpayers should not have to subsidize anti-LGBT discrimination and harassment, but also noted the change isnt binding. If a USAID contractor res a qualied employee just because she is lesbian or because he is transgender, those employees will still not be allowed to le a complaint with the U.S. Department of Labor seeking enforcement of the workplace protections encouraged under this new symbolic policy, Almeida said. Mark Bromley, chair of the Council for Global Equality, said the new policy is a step in the right direction and could encourage other agencies to follow USAIDs lead. Ive heard that new language in USAID contracts and grants will encourage the agencys program implementers to follow USAIDs existing policies by extending nondiscrimination provisions to include sexual orientation and gender identity, Bromley said. I think USAID deserves a lot of credit for their leadership and hope others will follow. Asked to comment on the USAID policy, Shin Inouye, a White House spokesperson, said, We welcome it. LGBT advocates have been pushing President Obama to issue an executive order prohibiting all federal contractors not just those doing business with USAID to enact non-discrimination policies inclusive of sexual orientation and gender identity. Such a policy change would be binding and enforced by the Department of Labor. The Obama administration hasnt said if it will issue the order. Almeida said the executive order is the best way for the Obama administration to ensure federal contractors have nondiscrimination policies for LGBT workers in place and called on the president to issue the order before 2013. In order for LGBT workers to have the same workplace protections as all other Americans, President Obama needs to sign an ENDA executive order covering government contractors for all federal agencies, Almeida said. Freedom to Work respectfully urges the president to do so during his rst term.

Chick-Fil-A gave $2 million to anti-gay groups

ATLANTA Chick-Fil-As charitable arm, WinShape Foundation, donated nearly $2 million to ex-gay and anti-gay groups in 2009 alone, according to IRS lings uncovered by Equality Matters, the LGBT advocacy project of Media Matters. Its 2009 tax forms indicate that WinShape which has come under re for barring same-sex couples from its retreat center in the past, and for supporting anti-marriage initiatives donated to anti-gay advocates such as the Marriage and Family Legacy Fund, Focus on the Family, Exodus International and Family Research Council. In response to controversy over sponsorship of anti-gay events in Pennsylvania and Rhode Island last year, Chick-l-A president and COO Dan Cathy released a statement denying that Chick-Fil-As donation was an endorsement of traditional marriage, arguing that Chick-Fil-A has no agenda against anyone, and that the company would not champion any political agendas relating to marriages or families.

Lesbian veteran subjected to homophobic rant

According to a Change.org petition started by a friend of Lance Corporal Esther Garatie, who was wounded and honorably discharged from the Marines, a nurse practitioner told her that the source of her depression was her sexual orientation. She sat down and looked at me, and her rst question was, Are you a lesbian? Garatie told the Dallas Voice. Her second question to me was, Have you asked God into your heart? Have you been saved by Jesus Christ? This is when I realized that I was no longer a United States veteran in her eyes, I was just a homosexual.

Does Obama see ENDA as part of jobs solution?

American Jobs Act doesnt bar anti-LGBT bias in workplace
By CHRIS JOHNSON cjohnson@washblade.com
White House Press Secretary Jay Carney declined to directly answer whether the Obama administration sees the lack of federal non-discrimination protections for LGBT workers as a jobs issue. Asked by the Washington Blade last week whether the lack of such protections is a part of the larger employment problem facing the country, Carney said Obama believes LGBT people should absolutely not be discriminated against with regards to jobs or anything else, but he noted that unemployment and slow growth affects all Americans. There is a broad problem that affects all Americans, and that is 9.1 percent unemployment and 2.5 percent GDP growth, which is good but not nearly good enough, Carney said. So he is focused on doing what he can to take measures that will help the economy grow and create jobs. LGBT Americans face unique problems with job security because no federal laws exist barring workplace discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity. Discriminating against workers or even ring them is legal on the basis of sexual orientation in 29 states and on the basis of gender identity in 35 states. Obama supports legislation known as the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, but the legislation didnt pass in the last Congress when Democrats held majorities in both chambers. The bill is unlikely to pass as long as Republicans remain in control of the House. Meanwhile, President Obama has called on Congress to pass the American Jobs Act a $450 billion economic stimulus package to increase the job opportunities available for Americans, and has toured the country to encourage lawmakers to act on the legislation. The bill has a variety of components, but none that address workplace discrimination against LGBT people. Asked why the issue isnt addressed in the American Jobs Act or why the president hasnt mentioned it in his campaign for the bill, Carney similarly side-stepped the inquiry and reiterated the importance of the unemployment issue. The president is out there making

the case about jobs broadly every day much, apparently, to the annoyance of some folks in Congress, but he will keep doing it, Carney said. And he will keep doing it unless and until every American whos looking for a job gets one. And if that doesnt happen, then youll continue to hear him talking about it.

LGBT advocates have been pushing for an executive order prohibiting federal money from going to contractors and suppliers that dont have their own nondiscrimination protections based on sexual orientation and gender identity. The Obama administration hasnt whether it will issue the order.

Perry wants N.H. to overturn marriage law

Anti-gay comments follow precipitous drop in polls
By CHRIS JOHNSON cjohnson@washblade.com
Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry on Saturday expressed support for legislative efforts to overturn same-sex marriage in New Hampshire. The three-term Texas governor made the remarks as well as comments in opposition to abortion rights at an annual banquet for the conservative advocacy group known as Cornerstone Action, according to the Concord Monitor. As conservatives we believe in the sanctity of life. We believe in the sanctity of traditional marriage, Perry was quoted as saying. And I applaud those legislators in New Hampshire who are working to defend marriage as an institution between one man and one woman, realizing that children need to be raised in a loving home by a mother and a father. Earlier this week, a Republican-controlled House committee in the state legislature voted 11-6 in favor of legislation that would overturn same-sex marriage in the Granite State. A vote on the House oor is expected early next year at around the same time as either oppose or strongly oppose repeal while 27 percent support repealing the marriage law. Perry made the remarks as he has fallen considerably behind other presidential candidates in the race to win the Republican nomination. Once the front-runner upon his entry into the race, the Texas governor has now fallen far behind former CEO of Godfathers Pizza Herman Cain and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney. In an Economist/YouGov poll published Saturday, Perry had nine percent support among likely Republican primary and caucus-goers. Comparatively, Cain had support from 28 percent of respondents and Romney had support from 24 percent. Perrys opposition to marriage equality has been known, but he hasnt before articulated any position on the New Hampshire marriage law as the state readies for its presidential primary. He once said he was ne with the legalization of same-sex marriage in New York, but then retracted those comments and said he supports a U.S. constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage throughout the country. Perry has also signed a pledge from the National Organization for Marriage to support, among other things, a Federal Marriage Amendment and defense of the Defense of Marriage Act against litigation in court.

the states presidential primary. According to the Monitor, the legislation would allow the 1,600 married same-sex couples in New Hampshire to remain married, but future same-sex marriages would be illegal. Gov. John Lynch (D), who in 2009 signed the same-sex marriage law, has vowed to veto any legislation overturning marriage

equality that comes to his desk. But after the 2010 election, Republicans took a super majority in both chambers of the legislature and could override his veto. A majority of New Hampshire residents oppose rescinding marriage equality. According to a University of New Hampshire Center survey published earlier this month, 62 percent of state residents

Gillibrand to introduce adoption anti-bias bill

Five states bar LGBT couples from system
By CHRIS JOHNSON cjohnson@washblade.com
Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) is set to introduce legislation next week that would bar discrimination against prospective LGBT parents looking to adopt. Gillibrand plans to introduce the legislation, known as the Every Child Deserves a Family Act, on Monday, according to her ofce. It would be rst time the measure has been introduced in the Senate. The bill would restrict federal funds for states if they have laws or practices allowing for discrimination in adoption on the basis of marital status, sexual orientation or gender identity. In a statement, Gillibrand hailed her own state of New York for removing barriers in allowing LGBT parents to adopt and said other states should follow that example. New York is a leader on ensuring that any family can adopt children and sets a great example for the rest of the country, Gillibrand said. By removing all barriers for LGBT families to serve as foster parents, New York State has increased its foster parent pool by 128,000 prospective parents. This legislation would open thousands of new foster and adoptive homes to children ensuring they are raised in loving families. Original co-sponsors of the bill are Sens. John Kerry (D-Mass.), Bernie Sanders (IVt.), Patty Murray (D-Wash.), Al Franken (D-Minn.) and Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.). The bill is currently being scored by the Congressional Budget Ofce and will likely be sent to the Senate Finance Committee. The Washington Blade previously reported in March that Gillibrand intended to introduce the adoption antidiscrimination bill. She didnt formally announce her intentions until Friday. According to Gillibrands ofce, most states permit single LGBT parents to adopt, but some dont allow LGBT couples to do so. Five states prohibit same-sex couples outright from adopting: Utah, Mississippi, Louisiana, North Carolina and Michigan. Additionally, six states ban same-sex parents from adopting their partners children. More than two-dozen states have no laws on adoption for prospective LGBT foster and adoptive parents. According to Gillibrands ofce, the lack of nondiscrimination policies in these states leaves potential LGBT parents vulnerable to agencies and case workers biases. Companion legislation is sponsored in the House by Rep. Pete Stark (D-Calif.). As of Friday, the legislation had 76 cosponsors. Among them is one Republican: Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.). In a statement, Stark praised Gillibrand for introducing the legislation in the Senate in time for the celebration of National Adoption Month in November. This legislation is about nding solid, permanent and loving homes for the 107,000 foster children waiting to be adopted, Stark said. Thats why 76 of my colleagues have joined me in sponsoring the House version. It is time to put the best interests of children rst and remove all discriminatory barriers in our child welfare system. President Obama hasnt yet endorsed the legislation, but the White House has said it supports the goals of the bill. Shin Inouye, a White House spokesperson, said, The president has long believed that we must ensure adoption rights for all couples and individuals based on their interest in offering a loving home, not based on discriminatory and irrelevant factors. He recognizes that adoptive families come in many forms, and that we must do all we can to break down barriers to ensure that all qualied caregivers have the ability to serve as adoptive families. While we have not reviewed this specic legislation, we share its goals and hope that the dialogue moves forward on this issue. An estimated 400,000 children are in the U.S. foster care system, and more than 107,000 children are waiting for adoption. In 2010, nearly 28,000 youth nationwide aged out of the foster care system without nding parents. Advocates praised Gillibrand for introducing the legislation and said it would help both LGBT parents and children seeking homes. Jennifer Chrisler, executive director of the Family Equality Council, said the legislation would address what she referred to as the child welfare crisis in our country. More than one-third of the children in foster care could be placed with a family right now, but state laws are eliminating loving and qualied parents simply because of their sexual orientation, gender identity or marital status, Chrisler said. Our country cannot continue to deny these children forever families because of the awed patchwork of state laws. Linda Spears, vice president of policy and public affairs for the Child Welfare League of America, joined those praising Gillibrand. Far too many children in foster care have little hope for a permanent family and end up being parented by the government, Spears. We must support all qualied adults who are interested in providing a nurturing, adoptive home regardless of their marital status or sexual orientation. Jeff Krehely, director of the LGBT research and communications project at the Center for American Progress, said Gillibrands bill would have a tremendous and positive impact on people who are LGBT and want to adopt. More importantly, it would really help the hundreds of thousands of kids who are in the foster care system and need forever homes, Krehely said. Too many states have laws and regulations that create barriers for LGBT people to adopt, which means more of these kids need to wait a long time before nding a family. This law would remove those barriers and make sure state laws nally catch up to the facts: LGBT people are just as good at parenting as people who are not LGBT. The Every Child Deserves a Family Act is modeled after the Multi-Ethnic Placement Act of 1994 as amended in 1996, which similarly prohibits states from receiving federal funds if they engage in racial or ethnic discrimination when placing children into homes.

Natl Park Service lists Kameny house as historic place

By LOU CHIBBARO JR. lchibbaro@washblade.com
The National Park Service announced on Wednesday that it has listed the home of gay rights leader Frank Kameny in the National Register of Historic Places in recognition of the historic signicance of Kamenys work on behalf of LGBT equality. For years, Dr. Kamenys residence at 5020 Cathedral Avenue, N.W., in Washington, D.C., served as a meeting place, archives, informal counseling center, headquarters of the Mattachine Society, and a safe haven for visiting gay and lesbian activists, the Park Service said in a Nov. 2 statement. It was here that Dr. Franklin E. Kameny developed the civil rights strategies and tactics that have come to dene the modern gay rights movement. The Park Services decision to place the Kameny house on its National Register of Historic Places comes three years after the D.C. Historic Preservation Review Board

WASHINGTON BLADE FILE PHOTO BY MICHAEL KEY

voted unanimously to designate the house as an historic landmark. Dr. Kameny led a newly militant activism in the edgling gay civil rights of the 1960s, said National Park Service Director Jonathan B. Jarvis. He was a landmark gure in articulating and achieving gay civil rights in federal employment and security clearance cases, and in reversing the medical communitys view on homosexuality as a mental disorder. In a Nov. 2 statement, the National Park Service said, Kamenys efforts in the civil rights movement, modeled in part on African American civil rights strategies and tactics, signicantly altered the rights, perceptions, and role of gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgendered people in American society. Park Service spokesperson David Barna said placement of Kamenys house on the National Register of Historic Places makes it eligible for federal preservation grants as well as tax deductions to help cover costs for maintaining the house for preservation purposes. He said the listing also would make it more difcult to radically change the appearance of the house or raze it by a future owner wishing to build a new structure on the property.

wonderful news and said it would have a benecial impact on LGBT-related programs and centers at colleges across the country, especially other religious institutions. To have someone of Paul Tagliabues stature and reputation make this commitment is a huge validation and endorsement of the necessity, value, and importance of the work we do, Subbaraman told the Blade. Paul and Chans generosity their courage and vision sets an incredible example of the importance of our allies, she said. Given his stature in the world of athletics, this is even more powerful. Subbaraman said that similar to the LGBTQ Centers current programs, the new initiative funded by the Tagliabues will operate under the supervision of the universitys Vice President of Student Affairs. She said the centers work is carried out consistent with, observant of, Jesuit values and principles of education and in collaboration with the universitys Ofce of Mission and Ministry. She said details of the new initiative will be worked out over the next several months but that she envisions some form of a hybrid academic/student life program. In collaboration with their gay son, Drew Tagliabue, Paul and Chan Tagliabue have also been supportive of the organization Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG), according to PFLAG ofcials. Liz Owen, communications director for PFLAGs national ofce in Washington, said the Metro D.C. PFLAG chapter honored the Tagliabues in 2009 with its Spotlight Award recognizing their support for the group.

Election could jeopardize Iowa marriage rights

Democrats hoping to hang onto one-seat majority in Senate
By CHRIS JOHNSON cjohnson@washblade.com
Next weeks special election in Iowa could jeopardize the states same-sex marriage rights if a Republican candidate wins and overturns Democratic control of the upper chamber of the state legislature. In an election set for Tuesday, Democrat Liz Mathis, a former news anchor for an Iowa TV station, and Republican Cindy Golding, a businessperson, are competing to represent Iowas 18th District in the state Senate. The vacancy was created by the retirement of Democratic former State Sen. Swati Dandekar, who left the Senate for an appointment in Republican Iowa Gov. Terry Branstads administration. Senate Majority Leader Michael Gronstal (D) has vowed that a state constitutional amendment overturning marriage equality instituted in 2009 in Iowa by order of the state Supreme Court wont come up as long as he remains leader of the chamber. But Democrats hold a majority in the state Senate by a margin of 25-24, so a win by the Republican would make for a tie in the leadership vote and throw control of the chamber into question. The Democratic and Republican candidates have taken opposite positions on a constitutional amendment that could overturn marriage equality in Iowa. During an interview Monday with the Cedar Rapids Editorial Board, Mathis said she supports marriage equality, while Golding called for bringing the issue to the voters. Mathis said she agrees with the Iowa Supreme Court ruling and said she doesnt believe in discrimination. I believe in the Iowa State Supreme Court, their unanimous ruling, appellate ruling on gay marriage, Mathis said. Varnum v. Brien is constitutionally sound. And Ill just leave it at that. Golding, on the other hand, reiterated her belief that the citizens of Iowa should vote on this issue. I believe that once we vote on it, whether we vote it up or down, the spotlight can come off Iowa for that issue and we can focus on business, we can focus on jobs, focus on education, Golding said. We can focus on the things we really need to be taking our time and energy. Because nobody in our district, it was not a huge issue to either one of us as we were going around. It became an issue to us by the national media. Golding continued that while she doesnt believe the ruling has dramatically changed Iowa, she does believe the decision has affected schools. She took issue with what she said was scholarships for LGBT students

at her daughters high school. I am curious what the sexual orientation of a student should be for a scholarship in high school, Golding said. That troubles me. Asked whether there are other criteria for the scholarship, Golding replied, Well theres academics, but you must be a declared GLBT student in order to apply for it. That troubles me. The plan for Senate leadership if the election results in a tie between the number Democrats and Republicans in the chamber remains in question. During a previous tie in 2005 and 2006, Democrats and Republicans alternatively shared power in the Senate and a rule was put in place ensuring no legislation could come up without consent of both parties. But Price said Republican Leader Paul McKinley has said he wont agree to such a rule this time around. In February, the Iowa House passed a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage, or even marriagelike unions. For the measure to come to the voters, it would need to rst make it through the Senate before the term of the legislature expires. The measure would then have to pass both chambers of the General Assembly again in a separate session with the same language. The soonest the constitutional amendment could come before voters is 2013. LGBT advocates in Iowa called a Democratic win in the election crucial to preserving marriage equality in Iowa as well as preventing other conservative initiatives from moving through the legislature. Troy Price, executive director of One Iowa, said a Republican victory could remove the last barrier in the state legislature preventing the passage of a constitutional amendment banning samesex marriage. We could see this thing on the ballot in less than two years, Price said. For us, this election means quite a bit, and thats why were working so hard to try and protect and maintain the pro-equality

majority in the Senate. State Sen. Matt McCoy (D), the rst openly gay person elected to the Iowa Legislature, said the election is very crucial for marriage equality and the progressive agenda. This is a must-win election as it relates to marriage equality, McCoy said. Obviously, civil rights for tens of thousands of people are at stake, and in addition to that, I think all the other rightwing social agenda issues are potentially at stake as well. So we could see a completely different agenda: less focus on education, less focus on human services, less focus on growing our economy and jobs and more focus on right-wing fringe political issues and agendas. According to the Daily Iowan, the district in question is about evenly split between Democrats and Republicans. Price said hes cautiously optimistic about a Democratic win. Things are looking up there from our perspective, Price said. Weve been working really hard. Weve been identifying new marriage supporters in the district and trying to do everything we can to get those people out to the polls. McCoy also expressed condence in Mathis ability to win the election and said her supporters are spending enormous amounts of money to ensure she wins. We feel very condent that we have an excellent candidate whos working very hard and is doing all of the right things at this point to ensure that we can win this election, McCoy said. So, we feel very comfortable that this is a seat we can win and hold. The election has also come to the attention of national groups both proLGBT and anti-gay working on the issue of marriage. The National Organization for Marriage, which opposes samesex marriage, announced last month that it would conduct an independent expenditure campaign along with the Family Leader, a local anti-gay group to

assist Golding with her campaign. Brian Brown, NOMs president, called the race a pivotal election contest in the effort to bring marriage rights for gay couples before the Iowa electorate. A proposed constitutional amendment on dening marriage as the union of one man and one woman enjoys broad-based, bipartisan legislative and voter support, but is being prevented from coming to the oor of the Senate by Majority Leader Mike Gronstal, Brown said. If Ms. Golding is successful in her election, we are hopeful that senators will nally have the opportunity to vote on the marriage amendment, and we expect it to pass handily. Among NOMs efforts is the distribution of a mailer featuring pictures of both Mathis and Golding on opposite sides on the Scales of Justice. Mathis is pulling the scale down on her side. The caption below Mathis reads, Liz Mathis supports gay marriage; No vote of the people. The caption below Golding reads, Cindy Golding supports traditional marriage; Will let the people vote! But NOMs involvement reportedly hasnt stopped there. Price said hes heard anecdotally NOM is knocking on doors in the district and is set to hold an event on Sunday as part of a national press tour. We are aware that this is on their radar screen ... so were doing everything we can to try and counteract that, Price said. Pro-LGBT national groups are also involved in the election on behalf of the Democratic candidate. Price said the election is denitely on their radar as well, but couldnt immediately name any of the national pro-LGBT groups that are involved. The Human Rights Campaign didnt respond to a request for comment on the election. This election is really a local election from our perspective, so weve just been working with out local partners to make sure that the voice of equality is heard, Price said.

Jobs, Kameny helped us think different

Tech innovator, activist taught us that cultural change is cool and good

Mark Lee is a local small business manager and longtime community business advocate. Reach him at OurBusinessMatters@gmail.com.

Frank Kameny was certainly not known to be a technophile, but rather a slow and reluctant adopter of modern communication technologies. Until his death last month, the pioneering gay and lesbian freedom advocate was still using a Web TV connection for Internet access and an archetypal word processor for the limited electronic correspondence he undertook. Unlike most of us, not a single Apple product graced his daily life. Nonetheless, he and Apple co-founder and, until shortly before his death within a week of Kamenys, company CEO Steve Jobs shared a number of things in common. Not the least of these was their undeniable inuence albeit profoundly direct and largely indirect, respectively on the acceptance of LGBT equality and the civil rights we enjoy today. Apples market share and stock price seem to continue to rise in tandem with the growing acknowledgment of our humanity. More than that, though, is the now increasingly universal belief that cultural change whether in the form of human convenience technology or acceptance of those different from us is both cool and good, and that it just works to the benet of all. Growing up in a less enlightened time, who among us doesnt remember the colorful rainbow-stripe-infused Apple logo or the advertising suggestion to think different? In a world where being different came with a price equivalent to the higher dollar amount associated with the brand and the value of its products, many of us found ourselves rooting for the spunky computer outlier on market differentiation alone. Even the iconic Apple 1984 television commercial which famously aired only one time, during that years Super Bowl struck a chord with those of us yearning to break free of the sexual conformity that was at the heart of our societal alienation. An afnity for the nonconformist Apple also developed easily and naturally for a disenfranchised community appreciative of the sense of style and otherness of

FRANK KAMENY and STEVE JOBS, who died last month, shared much in common, including an unwavering belief in new possibilities.

its products. Simplicity, ease of use and intuitiveness were welcomed qualities in a world that offered little of that for our own lives. Not only were we then more so than now proud of our collective renegade status and reputation as early adapters of things new and bold and cutting-edge, but Apples machines were integral components of many a gay or lesbian work life in design, art, publishing, fashion, music, architecture, communication and other creative pursuits. Cultural evolution springs from many wells and the reinforcement from respected sources that diversity is a reality and the embrace of it is right always packs a punch. Apples perfect score of 100 and high ranking among the Fortune 1000 on the Human Rights Campaign Corporate Equality Index and inclusion on HRCs 2011 Best Places to Work list is commended by all of us who pilgrimage to one of the corporations Temple of Shiny New Objects retail stores. With new Apple CEO Tim Cook honored as the most inuential gay or lesbian person on this years fth annual Out magazine Power 50 list now at the helm, the LGBT community shares a refreshed afnity with the worlds leading tech company and innovator. Frank Kameny taught both our community and the world that gay is good and Steve Jobs instructed all of us that being outside the mainstream could be insanely great! These two public personalities also shared other traits on their distinguished paths certainty in their convictions, single-mindedness of their focus, commitment to their goals and an unwavering belief in new possibilities. We owe a heartfelt debt of gratitude to both of them for the ways they changed our lives and the world around them.

It Gets Better campaign jumps the shark

Videos becoming another venue for political hypocrisy
By SEAN COTTER
Since Dan Savage started his It Gets Better campaign, it has seen a surprising amount of support in the media and from unexpected sources. It seems nearly each day, a new video makes headlines because of the high-prole person who appears in it athletes, celebrities, politicians. The vast majority of these news-making videos come from straight people, many of whom might not have been expected to come out in support of gay youth in the past. But for some time now, it has seemed that these videos have failed to live up to everything that made the It Gets Better campaign so powerful when it began, and have instead become a publicity tool for making straight public gures look good. Why did It Gets Better seem like such a noble cause in the beginning? Because it achieved a very specic goal: It gave LGBT youth who are feeling scared, confused, uncomfortable about their feelings and their futures a hopeful voice to listen to. As difcult as it is for LGBT kids to nd peers who understand them and are going through the same thing, it can be nearly impossible for them to have a direct talk with someone who has already been through it, who has grown up, understands what theyre going through from personal experience, and can say that it really does get better. As a kid, it can be difcult to see beyond your current situation, and this is amplied for LGBT youth who often have no one they can talk to about what they are going through. What these kids need more than anything else is to be told that they have a future. The rst It Gets Better videos seemed to be about just that. Then straight people made videos. They couldnt say theyd been in the intended audiences shoes, but they had good intentions and wanted to provide moral support. The president of the United States made one, and that was historic so it made headlines. It was a nice gesture, but also vague and less personal because President Obama couldnt really say he knew what it was like to grow up gay. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton made a video, which was historic as well, given the State Departments own bullying of its gay employees during the Cold War. It was important, notable, newsworthy, but again didnt do any of the things a heart-to-heart conversation between an out gay adult and a confused, scared, closeted teen was supposed to do. Bullying and gay teen suicide became mainstream news stories in 2011, and they were generally the focus of the It Gets Better videos, despite the fact that direct bullying is just one of the factors that can make life miserable for gay teens (loneliness, pressure for most to stay closeted, fear that theyll never nd people who are like them are other factors). As more straight celebrities, politicians and athletes made videos, they began to focus primarily on the general idea of being picked on. Congressman Jim Morans video is uncomfortable to watch because, having no experience to relate to troubled gay teens with, he resorts to talking about how he was a shy kid growing up. He looks like he doesnt know what else to say, and how could he? He never grew up with the broad, institutional persecution that LGBT youth face. But with so many other politicians making similar videos, his ofce must have felt that it needed to make its own. Perhaps the new It Gets Better video from the United States congressional delegation from New Jersey, which features several politicians who have voted against pro-gay legislation in Congress, marks the point when this campaign has truly jumped the shark. As reported by Elizabeth Flock of the Washington Post, Rep. Leonard Lance, who appears in the video, voted against repeal of Dont Ask, Dont Tell. Rep. Frank LoBiondo, who says in the video, There are actions we can take to make things better now, voted against repeal of DADT and for the Marriage Protection Act, which would prohibit federal courts from hearing cases that involve challenges to the Defense of Marriage Act. Rep. Jon Runyan appears in the video and has said in the past that he supports civil unions but that gay people should not be allowed to be married. The congressmen may tout their disapproval of classic schoolyard bullying, and yet they are contributing to a public culture that enshrines discrimination against LGBT people into law. The fact that a YouTube video can be seen as more important than an anti-gay congressional record signies that the It Gets Better campaign has now become just as shallow as our political discourse. Direct bullying is not the only thing that pressures gay kids to either stay closeted or risk facing social consequences. Public disapproval on a broad level can make a gay teenagers situation seem more hopeless, and it can make traditional bullying seem supported by society in the eyes of both the bully and the person being bullied. This type of bullying is more pervasive and can cause deep damage to self-esteem. What these kids need is love, respect, and for somebody to tell them that theyve been where they are and know what its like. It is still too early to tell how the intended audience is being affected by the It Gets Better campaign. We can only hope that when they are older and when they can answer back and tell us about what they went through, they will say that they were inspired by the campaign, that it didnt seem like a cynical ploy for people to grab media attention by feigning tolerance, and a tool for politicians to conceal their hypocrisy.

Halloween: Our American gay holiday

Not just a party its an ideal of personal emancipation
By REV. IRENE MONROE
Halloween is Americas gay holiday. In the words of the lesbian poet and scholar Judy Grahn, Halloween is the great gay holiday. And the weekend of lavish costumed theatricality that just wrapped attracted everyone, but especially LGBTQ revelers. Back in the day Halloween, the night before All Hallows Day (All Saints Day), was linked to the ancient Celtic festival Samhain in the British Isles, meaning summers end. And because the celebration is associated with mystery, magic, superstition, witches and ghosts, the festivity, not surprisingly, was limited in colonial New England because of its Puritanical belief system. But today its an LGBTQ extravaganza that rivals Pride festivals. Long before June ofcially became Gay Pride Month, and October Coming Out Month for the LGBTQ community, Halloween was unofcially our yearly celebrated holiday, dating as far back at the 1970s when it was a massive annual street party in San Franciscos Castro district. By the 1980s, gay enclaves like Key West, West Hollywood, and Greenwich Village were holding their annual Halloween street parties. And the parades the night of Halloween did and still do draw straight and gay spectators out to watch. Gay cultural inuence on Halloween has become such an unstoppable phenomenon here and abroad that anthropologist Jerry Kugelmass of University of Florida published a book in 1994 on the new trend, titled, Masked Culture, describing Halloween as an emerging gay high holiday. The masked culture rst developed by the gays of San Francisco has reached across the lines of orientation and now jumped across the boundaries between nations and languages. Its not just a party. Its an ideal of personal emancipation, selfexpression and self-fulllment an ideal that loses none of its power when it takes the form of a sexy nurses outt, CNN contributor David Frum wrote last year in Halloween craze started in gay culture. Nicholas Rogers, author of Halloween: From Pagan Ritual to Party Night, points out that while Halloween is enjoyed by everyone, it is the Gay community that has been arguably most responsible for Halloweens adult rejuvenation. As Halloween ourishes as a gay cultural phenomenon, so too ourished a backlash by the fundamentalist Christians with their Hell Houses. Hell Houses were a contemporary form of both anti-gay bullying and witch-hunting. Created in the late 1970s by deceased fundamentalist pastor, the Rev. Jerry Farwell, Hell Houses were religious alternatives to traditional haunted houses. They were tours given by evangelical churches across the country designed to scare and bully people away from myriad sins. And one of those sins was homosexuality. In 2006 the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force issued a report titled Homophobia at Hell House: Literally Demonizing Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Youth, explaining how hell houses specically targeted youth. Instead of spooking youth with ghosts and monsters, Hell House tour guides direct them through rooms where violent scenes of damnation for a variety of sins are performed, including scenes where a teenage lesbian is brought to hell after committing suicide and a gay man dying of AIDS is taunted by a demon who screams that the man will be separated from God forever in hell, the Task Force stated. A study published in the Journal of Psychology stated that a strong belief in Satan is directly related to intolerance of LGBTQ people. Religious leaders who supported Hell Houses believed that by scaring LGBTQ youth into heterosexual behavior they are saving their souls. However, the message that homosexuals are going to hell can have a deleterious impact on our youth. But with Halloween ourishing as a gay cultural phenomenon our children, too, can joyfully go door-to-door trick-or-treating. Our inuence on culture is being acknowledged and celebrated more as we come out.

Kamenys connection to J. Edgar

D.C. activist met with DiCaprio, Black about new biopic in January
By LOU CHIBBARO JR. lchibbaro@washblade.com
The lm J. Edgar, a dramatized biography of founding FBI director J. Edgar Hoover, opens this weekend, just a month after the death of gay activist Frank Kameny, who consulted on the lm. J. Edgar stars Leonardo DiCaprio and was written by Oscar-winner Dustin Lance Black, whos gay. The two visited Kameny in Washington back in January in a meeting arranged by Richard Socarides, the gay former Clinton administration ofcial who later worked for a Hollywood lm studio. DiCaprio and Black sought Kamenys insight on the chilling atmosphere of the 1950s and 1960s in Washington for gays and others who often were targets of Hoovers FBI, Kameny told the Blade in January. He said the two arrived in a limousine and were not accompanied by anyone else other than the driver. They had been over at the Justice Department prior to coming to my place, Kameny said. DiCaprio and Black talked with Kameny about an incident in which Hoover appeared to have the tables turned on him in 1963 by Kameny. In interviews with the Washington Blade in the 1980s and in 2006, Kameny told of how he and fellow members of the Mattachine Society of Washington, which Kameny co-founded, were contacted by an FBI agent in the summer of 1963 and invited to a meeting with the agent at FBI headquarters. Kameny recounted that he and Mattachine Society Member Bob Bellanger had no idea why they had been summoned to a meeting with the FBI, and the two wondered whether a crackdown against Mattachine was in the works. To their amazement, Kameny said, FBI Special Agent John A. OBirne politely asked him and Bellanger to remove Hoovers name from the Mattachine Societys mailing list, saying Hoover did not wish to have his name on such a list. Since shortly after its founding in 1961, the Mattachine Society of Washington, D.C., the citys rst gay rights organization, produced a newsletter that it sent to numerous public ofcials, including President John F. Kennedy at the White House and all of Kennedys cabinet members, including then Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy. At Kamenys direction, the group also added Hoovers name to the list of ofcials to receive the newsletter. Although most government ofcials didnt appear to pay much attention to the newsletter, Kameny said he was astonished that Hoover would dispatch an agent to seek out the Mattachine Societys leaders to request that Hoovers name be removed from the newsletter distribution list. Kameny said he told OBirne at the meeting that he would have to consult other members of the group about this request and would get back to the FBI with the organizations response. I sent them a letter setting conditions for our removal of Hoover from our list, Kameny told the Blade. The conditions included a requirement that the FBI provide the group with the name of another FBI ofcial to be placed on the newsletter list in place of Hoover and that the group would reserve the right to send Hoover a one-time mailing if an important issue arose. The FBI never responded to Kamenys letter. Hoover stayed on our mailing list until the day he died, said Kameny. Kamenys story was conrmed in the late 1980s when gay rights advocate and political science professor Dan Siminoski of California obtained a massive collection of FBI papers documenting the Bureaus surveillance of gays and lesbians and gay advocacy groups between 1950 and 1982. Siminoski acquired the documents through a 1982 Freedom of Information Act request and a 1983 lawsuit seeking to force the FBI to comply with the request. Among the documents Siminoski obtained were Kamenys letter setting conditions for removing Hoover from the Mattachine Society of Washington mailing list and at least one internal FBI document saying the FBI would never acquiesce to such conditions from a homosexual organization.

Matt Swearman had been playing the trombone since age 9 and the fourth grade. But like many, after years of playing in the high school and college marching band, the instrument had been dormant for several years. When he met a former D.C. Different Drummers conductor in 2002, he was encouraged to pick it up again. The Drummers, an umbrella non-prot of three bands (marching, concert and swing) has about 100 members and is a mostly LGBT outt. Its concert band has a program scheduled for Saturday night dubbed Architects of Music. The 8 p.m. show (to be held at the Columbia Heights Education Campus Auditorium at 3101 16th Street, N.W.) will feature works by Bach, Holst, Italian composer Ottorino Respighi and Eric Whitacre. The pieces were chosen for their robust musical construction. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at dcdd.org or call 202-403-3669. Each of the bands has its own conductor, but Im kind of the conductor of the whole board, Swearman, whos been president since July, says. Im kind of the cheerleader for the group, the connection to the community. The group, now in its 31st year, performs at various Pride and other local and regional LGBT events like Night Out, the AIDS Walk, holiday parades and more. This is the concert bands traditional fall concert. Theyll also give a holiday show in December. Swearman says Saturdays concert is special. It kind of has a duel theme, he says. Were paying tribute to composers who have a lot of structure in their music, but its also a tribute to our own personal architects the people who inspired us to play music. By day, Swearman, a 39-year-old East Berlin, Pa., native, is director of marketing for Seven-Twenty Strategies, a public affairs and PR consulting rm. He and his partner of a decade, wine guru Terry Brown, got married last year. He enjoys music, wine, travel and spending time at home with Brown and their two dogs.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN OUT AND WHO WAS THE HARDEST PERSON TO TELL? I have been out since 1999. My parents were the hardest people to tell because I thought it would change how they feel about me. They are wonderful, and very supportive. WHOS YOUR LGBT HERO? Frank Kameny WHATS WASHINGTONS BEST NIGHTSPOT, PAST OR PRESENT? Honestly, I dont go out that much, so Id be inclined to say our house, a few friends and a few bottles of wine (my husband sells wine for a living)! But Id also say Number 9. Love the sleek and chic atmosphere. DESCRIBE YOUR DREAM WEDDING. It is the one that Terry and I had on May 5, 2010. Just the two of us, our closest family and best friends. There were only 18 of us, and it was a very special day to celebrate us and the people we share our lives with. WHAT NON-LGBT ISSUE ARE YOU MOST PASSIONATE ABOUT? Environmental issues. I recycle, I compost, I reduce, I reuse, I only have one car, and it is a hybrid, etc. It is incredibly important and every little bit helps. WHAT HISTORICAL OUTCOME WOULD YOU CHANGE? The passage of DADT in the 1990s. It never should have become law. Fortunately, its been repealed. WHATS BEEN THE MOST MEMORABLE POP CULTURE MOMENT OF YOUR LIFETIME? The rst thing that pops into my mind is the day Michael Jackson and Farrah Fawcett died. ON WHAT DO YOU INSIST? Honest and open communication. WHAT WAS YOUR LAST FACEBOOK POST OR TWEET? The young lady ahead of me at CVS is paying in quarters. Charming.

IF YOUR LIFE WERE A BOOK, WHAT WOULD THE TITLE BE? Got a minute? Lets talk! IF SCIENCE DISCOVERED A WAY TO CHANGE SEXUAL ORIENTATION, WHAT WOULD YOU DO? Oppose it. WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE IN BEYOND THE PHYSICAL WORLD? I consider myself agnostic. WHATS YOUR ADVICE FOR LGBT MOVEMENT LEADERS? Stop pandering to candidates and lawmakers who take our money and then do nothing for our community. Talk is cheap. Actions speak louder than words. Its time we have the next Harvey Milk and the next Frank Kameny! WHAT WOULD YOU WALK ACROSS HOT COALS FOR? My husband and my dogs. WHAT LGBT STEREOTYPE ANNOYS YOU MOST? Demonization of people based on sexual preference is absurd and incredibly annoying. WHATS YOUR FAVORITE LGBT MOVIE? A Single Man staring Colin Firth WHATS THE MOST OVERRATED SOCIAL CUSTOM? Bringing a hostess gift. Your good company is what I appreciate. WHAT TROPHY OR PRIZE DO YOU MOST COVET? The Michael Rutherford Spirit Award from D.C.s Different Drummers. It is awarded each year by members to the member they feel embodies the spirit of our founder. WHAT DO YOU WISH YOUD KNOWN AT 18? That it REALLY does get better! WHY WASHINGTON? I was always drawn to a metropolitan area and I have always had a fondness for D.C.

have you seen us lately?

Dueling Othello productions are on the boards now in Washington in wildly different interpretations. OWISO ODERA and Ian Merrill Peakes in the Folger Theatre production.

Dueling Othellos
Synetic brings its trademark moves to its production while Folgers goes traditional route
By PATRICK FOLLIARD
Jealousy can be a dangerous emotion. In Shakespeares Othello, its downright lethal. Local audiences can see two vastly different takes on the dark drama at the Folger Theatre on Capitol Hill, and (if you act fast) Synetic Theater in Crystal City. Director Robert Richmonds Folger production sets the action during the Crusades and casts Othello as a Templar Knight, underlining the Moors unparalleled ascent to power. As Othello, Owiso Odera displays an innate princely condence and occasional cockiness that works beautifully to further ignite the fury of his secretly sworn enemy Iago, played by a charmingly villainous Ian Merrill Peakes. From the start, the audience is made aware of the extent of Iagos shocking duplicity and expects him, like most of Shakespeares bad guys, to meet his fate at the end of a blade by the end of the evening. Instead hes sentenced to a smorgasbord of torture. Despite some hammy moments, Richmonds Othello is an exciting and visceral interpretation. When Oderas darkly handsome Othello awakens a sleeping Desdemona (the luminous Janie Brookshire) to punish her for alleged sexual misdeeds with her friend Cassio (Thomas Keegan) by strangling her to death (it takes several tries before she eventually dies), its intense for sure. And the subsequent scenes in which Iagos distraught wife Emilia (Karen Peakes) reveals Iagos ongoing deception and quickly meets a horric fate, followed by Othellos devastating realization and a tragic ending of his own, are equally compelling. This production reunites gay designers William Ivey Long and Tony Cisek who collaborated on last seasons Folger hit Henry VIII. Both take brilliant advantage of the tragedys disparate regions and climes. As the action moves from Venice via sea to Cyprus, Longs costumes change from capes, fur-trimmed coats and chain mail to open shirts and sandals. Similarly, Ciseks dazzling set morphs from a towering canopy bed elaborately crowned in carved wood to Senate ofce to billowing ship sails to a fabulously appointed Bedouin tent (not entirely Cyprian, but beautiful still). Synetics Othello is the second of three revivals featured in the terric companys Speak No More: The Silent Shakespeare Festival. As the title suggests, the 90-minute show is interpreted solely through movement. And while the ubert actors dont utter a peep about a green-eyed monster or beast with two backs, all the elements of jealousy and lusty passion are fully conveyed through Paata Tsikurishvili smart staging and Irina Tsikurishvilis insanely inventive and sexy choreography. Instead of one of Iago, Synetic has opted to go with three. Theyre united when the primary Iago played by a maniacally gleeful Philip Fletcher (who is gay) pulls his two alter egos (Synetic vets Alex Mills and Irina Tsikurishvili) through a Mylar mirror. At times the potent trio overpowers the productions Othello (Roger Payano), but never for too long. The talented and well built Payano denitely holds his own among a strong cast. In fact, it was Payano who rst inspired Synetic to mount Othello when it premiered last season. In ways, the challenge with Othello is to buy into Iagos all-consuming hate for the title character and to believe a man will turn on his beloved wife based on pretty imsy evidence. Both productions do fairly well convincing on these counts; still, as with so much of Shakespeare, audiences just have to go with it, remembering that jealousy can make people do ugly things.

Keep on truckin
From pork to pizza, citys mobile restaurants continue to dazzle
By JONATHAN HOWARD
The food truck craze that began a few years ago remains in full force and with seven of the citys top trucks gathered in a 17th Street church parking lot for the inaugural Washington Blade Food Truck Rally last week, it seemed a good time to review some of the offerings. The rally was part of the 25th annual High Heel Race and drew a large, steady crowd throughout the night. Rather than watch the race, I spent the evening sampling various treats from the vendors. Mojo Truck EXTRAordinary Sandwiches (@Mojotruck) You have options at the Mojo Truck, with four basic sandwich choices and three different ways to get those sandwiches. I opted for the pork sandwich with the classic set of toppings, which includes tomato, mozzarella, fried egg and lettuce. (No lettuce for me, however, as I have great disdain for crunchy water.) Growing up Cuban, I always have high expectations for any pork-based sandwich, and the pork on this sandwich denitely held its own. Also, the bread was nice and crispy. The half melted and half un-melted mozzarella was a bit disappointing, though, and I couldnt nd my fried egg anywhere on the sandwich. I was really looking forward to that fried egg. STIX Grilled Deliciousness (@eatstix) The bacon-wrapped let mignon was the rst thing that caught my eye here, but I also nd it hard to resist Tequila Lime Chicken, which was the second item on the list. Meanwhile, the hubby decided to try the Tomato Caprese with a Balsamic Reduction. And let me say, damn, that is some really good chicken on a stick. It was well-seasoned, wellcooked, and when you add a squirt of lime, that chicken just dances around your mouth, spreading joyful avors everywhere. I tried some of the Tomato Caprese, something I have never eaten off a stick before, but with fresh mozzarella, tomatoes that explode in your mouth, and that delicious reduction, I would say this is a must try. Rolling Ficelle (@TheFicelle, rollingcelle.com) There were so many delicious options listed on this menu. These were denitely sandwiches with style. I decided to step out of my comfort zone and order The DeKooning Ficelle. The DeKooning has roast beef, provolone cheese, crushed cherry pepper relish and light horseradish mayo on fresh Lyon Bakery Bread. The roast beef was tender, there was a sweetness to the cherry pepper relish that matched amazingly well with the meat, and the horseradish mayo added a touch of heat that made me smile. I do love me some spicy! And the bread? Wow, that is some fresh, crispy, perfect bread. How was I going to top that? Well, I moseyed on over to Porc to see what they had to offer. Porc: Purveyors of Rolling Cuisine (@Porcmobile) This food truck had a sense of humor. I especially liked the note that suggested the sign was scratch-and-sniff, and that you get half-off your meal if you are rocking drag. (I knew I should have put on some high heels!) I debated between the Pulled Pork Sandwich and the Smoked Angus Beef Sloppy Joe. But, since they are called Porc, it would be wrong if I didnt get the pulled pork. So, I stepped up and ordered my second pork sandwich of the night with hot BBQ sauce. This sandwich was good, but not great. The pork was moist and tasty and the bread was soft and fresh, but the hot BBQ was not hot at all and left me wanting more avor. Next, it was time for pizza. I like to consider myself a pizza expert, being a New Yorker and all. DC Slices (@DCSlices) This truck has pretty much what you would expect a few different slices and some rather tasty-looking fried food. The added bonus for me was the fried pickles on the menu. I love fried pickles. So, the husband and I ordered a cheese slice, a pepperoni slice, and an order of fried pickles. I couldnt wait to taste the fried pickles. Then, moments later, disaster stuck: they were out of fried pickles. Disappointment rushed over me, but then I remembered I still had two slices of pizza to taste. I bit into the pepperoni slice, and was impressed. The crust was nice, the sauce-to-cheese ratio was correct, and the pepperoni was perfect. Overall, not quite up to New York City pizza standards but some of the best pizza I have had in D.C. The cheese slice was a little underdone, though, leaving the crust a bit soggy, but overall quite good. Now, it was time for dessert. First stop? Dangerously Delicious Pies. Dangerously Delicious Pies (@thepietruckdc, dangerouspiesdc.com) Sweet and Savory pies, with so many options what is a guy to do? We opted to try three pies, one savory the Hot Rod Potato and two sweet the signature Baltimore Bomb Pie and the Apple Cinnamon Chess. The Hot Rod Potato pie was so rich, with layers of potatoes, cream, cheeses, onions, and (my favorite part) the hot sauce. There was no lack of avor with this pie, and I was thrilled. The Baltimore Bomb pie was full of Berger cookies. The crunchy chocolaty top of this pie slid right into the rich lling that was lighter and ufer than you would expect. Finally, the Apple Cinnamon Chess was the best apple pie I have ever tasted. I am bringing this one home to the family for Thanksgiving. And why not add some ice cream to the pie in my stomach? Sinplicity Ice Cream (@sinplicity1, sinplicityicecream.com) I left this truck until last because I was a bit cold, and I didnt really know what could be so special about ice cream. Then, I looked at the menu. While looking at the menu the lovely woman working the truck handed me a sample cup of hot chocolate, I sipped it, looked up, pondered it, and wondered why I have never had hot chocolate like this before. This hot chocolate with orange and cinnamon is so amazing, it will denitely make you stop for a moment after you taste it. Then, I ordered my ice cream. I dont usually like my food touching, let alone mixed together. So when I ordered the Chocolate Chili Pepper Ice Cream, my husband looked at me like I had lost my mind. But I was in love on the rst bite: this is what ice cream should taste like. Rich and creamy chocolate with the warm avors of the chili pepper it was divine! I had a bite of ice cream and a sip of hot chocolate and repeated this as I walked down to the High Heel Race. I am sure there was chaos around me but I didnt notice. I was completely enthralled by my ice cream!

Singer and author STEWART LEWIS relocated to Washington a month ago.

New horizons
Gay indie singer Lewis plans Busboys concert in his new hometown
By JOEY DiGUGLIELMO joeyd@washblade.com
Nobody moves to Washington hoping to take their singing career to new heights, so what led singer/songwriter Stewart Lewis here from New York? You guessed it. It was for love basically, he says. My partner has a super super high powered job and they transferred him here from New York He runs six radio stations as a market manager for CBS Radio. Lewis and his partner of ve-plus years, Steve Swenson, moved to 14th Street N.W. about a month ago. Lewis, whos released four albums and two EPs since 1995, grew up in a musical family in Boston he calls his parents kind of hippie/bluegrass and is used to relocating. Prior to his six years in New York, he spent four in Los Angeles and was in Colorado before that. He plays his rst concert as a D.C. resident Thursday at Busboys and Poets. Of D.C., he says the relocation was like not really an option, but Im really excited about it. We can live like kings here for what we paid in New York. Its a nice change. A little less gritty than New York. Lewis agrees his music is mostly in the folk-pop vein and says his lyrics are generally optimistic, a reection of his personality. I guess you could say Im kind of a romantic and hopeful person by nature, he says. Occasionally some yearning seeps in and I guess you could say theres a little more of a darker side with some of that, but basically its jut about telling a story. Its a tricky thing because you never want to be too literal because you want to have people relate to it, but you also want to be suggestive enough to interest them and have something that will resonate without hitting them over the head. A theater major in college, Lewis says now hes really not that great an actor. After a short stint on Guiding Light in 1993, he decided to pursue music. He had early success opening in the 90s for acts like Sheryl Crow, Ani DiFranco, Shawn Colvin and Paula Cole. He also had early songs placed on shows like Dawsons Creek, Joan of Arcadia, Party of Five and Biggest Loser. His 2008 album In Formation was a short-lived deal with here! Tunes, a Regent Media (The Advocate, Out magazines), he says was a bizarre experience. Theyre a little creepy, he says. I think it did OK. Basically they spent a shit load of money making it and paid me a shit load of money but then they didnt really get behind it. It just shows how messed up they are. Though hes had reasonable success marketing himself as an openly gay singer, a parallel career as an author he has three books to his credit convinced him to branch out into the mainstream. After two books with gay publisher Alyson Books, he secured an agent and got his latest work, the young adult-aimed novel You Have Seven Messages, out through Random House. Basically I think the LGBT community is pretty responsive to out singers, but I did make a conscious decision not to have a writing career writing gay beach reads. The gay section is in the danky basement of the bookstore and theres no money in it. I want to reach the masses, so in that regard Ive denitely chosen to go this route with the books. Stewart thinks hes close enough to New York that hell still be able to get there as often as his singing career demands. A bigger challenge will be spending regular time with his 5-year-old daughter, Rowan, who lives in Boston with her mother, a fanturned-friend of Stewarts who volunteered her services to help him realize his dream of being a parent (We went the turkey baster route, he says with a laugh).

Odes to the joys and frustrations of being a pet lover captured in new book

Terri Schlichenmeyer has been reading since she was 3 years old. She lives in Wisconsin with two dogs and 12,000 books. Reach her at bookwormsez@yahoo.com.

Thats a mouthful.

Gays love their dogs. Perhaps in even greater numbers than our straight counterparts since were less likely to have children. As youll see in the new book Im Not the Biggest Bitch in This Relationship, a book of short stories edited by Wade Rouse, were not the only ones who love our dogs. Without a doubt, your pooch is a member of your family. She sleeps with you. You share your food with him. You might even dress your dog in better duds than you have in your own closet. The relationship you have with Puppykins might be stronger than most of the ones you have with humans. Surely, you cant be the only demented dog-lover in the world can you? Not by a long shot. Lets say you couldnt ignore the dog that seemed to need you more than anything in the world but the second you got her home, she turned into a

tornado with fangs. If that describes your household, then ip to Squatting with Stella by Starlight by Allie Larkin. Think a minute, and you might realize that you need the pup more than vice versa. Like many puppy parents, you might share a bed with the furkid. But whose bed is it, really? In Mnage a Dog by Alice Bradley, youll see that battling Buster for bed real estate is a common occurrence in lots of households. Cant tolerate a beggar? Might as well give up after reading A Dog Day of Summer by W. Bruce Cameron because, seriously, how long can you say no to those big, sad, hungry eyes? And how can you resist using babytalk? You cant, so go ahead read Dum-Diddle-Dum-Dum by Wade Rouse and Theres No Place Like Home, Judy by Alec Mapa and know youre in good company. Finally, if you ever truly wonder whether that pooping, shedding pile of fur really loves you, then stop and read Wuzsha, Wuzsha, Wuzsha by Eddie Sarfaty. And pass the tissues, please. Are you daft over doggies? Crazy about canines? Moonstruck over mutts? Then youre going to sit up and beg for this book. Author and editor Wade Rouse pulled together about 20 authors (counting Chelsea Handlers dog, Chunk, who wrote the foreword) and comedians to create a treasury thats denitely funny but that also has its serious side. I howled, I whined, I yipped and I was glad I fetched this book. If youre a dog lover (and you must be, if youve read this far), you wont be able to resist reading whats in here. Im Not the Biggest Bitch in This Relationship is a book to fall head over tail in love with.

Ski group with local chapter announces winter season plans

By KEVIN MAJOROS
The Ski Bums have announced their 2012 skiing and snowboarding season and the theme this year is It is time to power down, a double entendre meaning its time to power down your gadgets and it is also time to power down a mountain. Ski Bums president Chris French says when new members were asked last year why they joined the group, he heard a common theme. I just wasnt meeting the kind of people I wanted to meet. These days with people increasingly nding each other online, the Ski Bums are hoping that gadget frustration will bring new members to the adventuresome group. Ski Bums is the worlds largest LGBT club for skiers and snowboarders. They began hosting trips in 2005 and today have about 800 members from the United States, Canada and Europe. They are headquartered in New York with chapters spread out across the country, including one in Washington. The group hosts a variety of local, national and international trips for slope-seekers. Annual member dues are $49 and the dues are applied as a rebate when you sign up for your rst trip. The 2012 season includes treks to Salt Lake City, Beaver Creek, Telluride, Sun Valley, Killington and more. Newbies are the celebrities of the day on their rst trip, French says. They receive a free skiing or snowboarding lesson and oftentimes there are clinics with other members of the group. He also described the vibe as super outgoing and the trips being a great way to meet new friends. The Bums are not ones to squander all their energy on the mountain. They have an

active community outreach program that has beneted the Anti-Violence Project, change.org, the Trevor Project, the Victory Fund and more. Recently they held their annual Bums Rush charity event in New York which is similar to the two-person Amazing Race. After racing throughout the streets of New York, two people won a trip to St. Anton, Austria with money raised being donated to the Project. The Ski Bums website is full of stats on member demographics. I was surprised to read that skiing has made a comeback from the snowboarding explosion and that 66 percent of the Bums prefer to ski. French says theyre proud of their diverse member base, which has some trans members. The group also has a policy of inclusiveness. They have announced their all-womens trip to the resorts at Killington and Okemo, Vt., March 2-4. French says resorts all over the country and Europe have been welcoming to Ski Bums members since their inception. During the course of each year, the Bums host a series of avalanche parties across country, a chance for members and nonmembers to socialize, talk skiing and snowboarding, get advice on gear or even nd roommates for an upcoming trip. On Nov. 18, the D.C. Ski Bums will be at Nellies Sports Bar starting at 8 p.m. for the blizzard bash. Join them for prize giveaways, games and info about their trips. Also on the docket that night will be the chance to sign-up for two Ski Bums day trips specically for D.C. area members. More information on the trips is coming but the dates are set: Jan. 28 and Feb. 11. Your personal goal should be celebrated, says French says. We try to coral people into skill level groups so they get the most out of their experience. If you miss your days of skiing and snowboarding or want to try for the rst time, check out the Bums at ski-bums.org. They can also be found on Facebook at skibumslgbt.

Dog park dynamics

Following a few simple rules can make social visits with your pet more enjoyable for everyone
Like most people, dogs are social animals and they enjoy the company of others like themselves. In the D.C. area, we are lucky to have a number of off leash dog exercise areas or dog parks, as they are more commonly known. These are areas where owners and pets alike can come to unwind, relax and spend some quality time with canines and humans alike. There really is nothing more enjoyable than spending quality time with our loyal friends. There are no memberships, no fees, no reservations required and the attire is strictly come as you are. There are a few guidelines, though, that will make your visit to the dog park a more pleasant experience for you and the other dog lovers. Just like any other community, dog parks have their problems. There may be dogs that wont behave or are aggressive toward other dogs, people who either cant or wont discipline their dogs, people who turn a blind eye when their dog makes a mess. Other owners may invite tragedy by eating or bringing food to the dog park. This may lead to inter dog aggression as dogs compete for food resources. If you must bring treats as a reward for your dog make sure to keep them hidden. Also bringing an intact female dog in heat to the dog park is an obvious no-no. If

the dog park before, and who seem to get along with other dogs. If your dog is on the smaller side, you might arrange for a small-dog play date, where only dogs fewer than 20 pounds are allowed to participate. Many of the dog parks in the area have posted times for small dog play, or an area of the park is set aside for our pint sized friends. Before you bring any dog to a public area you should make sure that he is up to date on his vaccines, including rabies, distemper and kennel cough. Its important that your dog be free of internal parasites and your veterinarian can do a simple test to check for worms. If dogs get out of hand, have a leash handy to keep your dog under control and keep him out of the fray. Speak up if a dog is behaving in an aggressive manner. Ask the owner to do something about his dogs behavior. Its important that the participants at the dog park police their own, for the sake of their pets. Likewise, is a dog is sick or coughing you need to tell the owner to seek veterinary attention, as this could be a sign of a communicable disease. You and your fellow dog park users are your own best friends and nobody can prevent problems better than all of you. Discuss waste removal if an owner misses it, separating dogs that get out of hand, reminding other owners of the posted rules and this will lead to an enjoyable environment for all involved. If you need a list of the local dog parks in the area, nd us on Facebook at Home Veterinary Care and look under discussions, or you can e-mail us at Doctors@home-vet-care.com If we dont get back to you right away its because we are at the dog park ourselves.

Small Pa. town makes ideal getaway

Bedford abounds with history and attractions
By DIANE STUART
Bedford County is a historical treasure nestled in beautiful South Central Pennsylvania approximately two-and-a-half hours from Washington. The interstate highway brings and ever growing stream of traffic to the county via I-76, I-70 and I-99. The pace is a little slower than most places but we love it that way. After a fast paced week in the District, Bedford is a very easy commute to escape it all. Our warm inviting community welcomes all. For many travelers, Bedford is an easy place to find but a difficult place to leave. Rural in nature, our small communities are connected by fields, streams and highways that form the backbone of Bedford County. Visitors to this area admire our rich history and enjoy the surprisingly wide range of shops, antiquing, restaurants and attractions that form the heart of our downtown. Exploring the streets of Bedford is a popular way to spend the day. Enjoying the peaceful, safe environment we often take for granted. From humble origins as a trading post more than 250 years ago, Bedford, originally named Raystown, has played a role in the formation of our county. Fort Bedford, now more than 250 years old, played a pivotal role in bringing stability to the region. Later, George Washington

visited the area and used it as a base to quell the Whiskey Rebellion. As the fledgling nation worked its way West, the main road West ran through the heart of Bedford County. Several local businesses are housed in structures that were once stage coach stops along that road, now known as Route 30 or the Lincoln Highway. Oralees Golden Eagle Inn and Juniata Crossings Country Mercantile are two such businesses and both welcome the public. for 245 years. In 1796 a doctor purchased the site of eight mineral springs believed to have medicinal powers. In 1806, he built a hotel to accommodate the many visitors to the springs. Now the Omni Bedford Springs Resort, the grand hotel has come back to life after a $120 million restoration project. The Springs has played host to 10 presidents and generations of the nations wealthiest families. While the stories surrounding this historic facility are many, it has the distinction of being the only place outside of Washington where the Supreme Court has convened.

The Omni Bedford Springs recently was featured in the November issue of Martha Stewart Living. Bedford is the perfect location for Washingtonians to escape and relax. If you have dreamed of owning a second home that is an easy commute and affordable, then Bedford is the perfect place. Come visit and check out all we have to offer in small town living. Pamper yourself at the Omni Bedford Springs or at one of our historic bed and breakfasts.
