INTRODUCTION Science and technology is the wheel on which all economies revolve.

Information and Communication Technology (ICT), global planetary monitors, and all other human development tools and processes are products of science and technology. These are solely driven by science Education and research. In the 21st century, emphasis on science and technology must remain focused and technology remain the only critical tools for achieving national aspiration (Ada, 2003:279 in index 2010).This view is unambiguously stated in the National Policy on science and technology, which partly reads Science and technology are to modern life what the body. Certainly, the wealth, influence and power in the world today (e.g. developed nations), depend on the capacity to utilize science and technology for socio-economic development. (Index 2010) There are three major dimensions to science. They are :- Its content (scientific knowledge), its method (scientific process) and its application (resulting in tangible products).Science apply the scientific method to conduct inquiry into nature in order to obtain scientific knowledge. This is done using processes such as observing, classifying, hypothesizing, designing experiments, measuring, communicating, interpreting data etc. 2.0 SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY AND SOCIETY Science is the systematic study of anything that can be examined, tested, and verified. Science has developed into one of the greatest and most influential fields of human endeavor. Today, different branches of science investigate almost all that can be observed or detected. Science develops through objectives analysis, instead of through personal belief. The

knowledge gained in science accumulates as time goes by, building on work performed earlier. Technology refers to the process by which human beings use scientific knowledge to fashion tools and machines to increase their control and understanding of the material environment (Meyer, 2008). Society is seen as a structured community of people bound together by similar traditions, institutions or nationality (Encarta, 2008). In spite of the developmental strides by science and technology, it has also brought about devastating problems, dilemmas and pais to mankind. 3.0 The following amours others are the various areas that science contributions affect mankind: Entertainment, health, agriculture transportation, economy, housing, crime etc 3.1 Some advantages of science and technology to mankind.

3.1.1 ENTERTAINMENT This area cuts across various fields such as movies, music, dance, drama etc. They are mostly staged by artist, but backed by science and technology, without which dissemination will be impossible. In contemporary Nigeria for instance, movies are found everywhere even in the remote rural areas. In areas where there is electricity, internet sand ICT facilities , movies and video clips can easily be downloaded from the net. As such, the entertainment industry may provide excellent sources of entertainment, fun and recreation. Such usually contain decent humour, music and comic incidents which can transmit the spirit of the consumer and relief same from psychological depression. This also goes a long way to

reduce the incidence of sadism and psychological stress of the individual (Uder, 2010). Some of the entertainment industries may also produce documentaries. These are excellent and useful sources of knowledge, information, ideas and concepts relevant to educational needs and development of the consumer. They could also serve as a source of crosscultural ideas and technological inventions of other people and culture, stimulating creativity and scientific inquisitiveness. The good side of the entertainment could also be used in teaching and modeling of good social behaviours and conduct, e.g. courage, patience, determination, resilience and commitment to the values, ethics and ideas of humanity. Another advantage goes to the producers of entertainment. A lot of resources is involved, but a lot id also gained, giving room for employment. 3.1.2 HEALTH This refers to the general condition of the body or mind, especially in terms of the presence or absence of illness, injuries, or impairments. Science has really helped in no small measure, in the improvement of human health. There are so many areas of health that have been witnessed. Few of which are discussed in this write up.
