Awaken the giant within-Anthony Robbins

Awaken The Giant Within by Anthony Robbins is an expansion of his personal development techniques and strategies taught through a motivational self-help type approach. Robbins lays emphasis on Neuro-Associative Conditioning, a trademarked technique developed on the lines of Neuro-Linguistic Programming with the distinguishing factor being that NAC focuses more on conditioning of the human brain wherein a condition is suggest-ably fixed once and for all. Anthony "Tony" Robbins is an American self-help author and motivational speaker. Robbins writes about subjects such as health and energy, overcoming fears, persuasive communication, and enhancing relationships. Robbins began his career learning from many different motivational speakers, and promoted seminars for his personal mentor, Jim Rohn. He is deeply influenced by neuro-linguistic programming(as evident in Awaken the Giant Within) and a variety of philosophies. Robbins's work has been featured in major media including Time, Newsweek, Fortune, Forbes, Life, GQ, Vanity Fair, Business Week, Tycoon and Success magazines, the CBS Evening News, NBC News, ABC's Prime Time Live, Fox News, CNN and A&E as well as newspapers, radio programs, and Internet media worldwide. The author begins by reminding his readers about their Dreams and their vision for the quality of life that they desire and deserve. He then moves on to motivating and then chalking out concepts to be followed in order to take immediate control of ones Emotional, Physical and Financial Destiny. He debunks peoples myths and negative beliefs and encourages and challenges readers to bring about positive changes in their lives. The style of writing is very similar to an array of books available these days but the distinguishing factor is his use of appropriate examples and allusions drawn to famous concepts and people. Also significant is the authors approach to the science to bring about a Lasting change with no back slips. Owing to all these factors the book serves as an effective read not only for aspiring managers but also for individuals who aim to raise their own standards and to discard their limiting beliefs.

IMPORTANT THEORIES,CONCEPTS:
Niagara Syndrome Life is like a river for many people, they just jump in the river of life without ever deciding where they want to end up, so they quickly get caught up in the current, current events, current challenges, and current fears. And then they come to the forks in the rivers, they dont consciously decide which way to go, they just go with the flow of the river (the flow of the majority instead of being directed by their own values and goals) and as a result they feel out of control but continue to drift down stream until one day the sound of the raging water wakes them up and they realize they are 5 feet from the falls and they are in a boat with no ores and then they say Oh shoot, but its too late. They are going to take a fall, it may be a financial setback or the breakup of a relationship or maybe even a health problem, in almost all of the cases the fall could have been prevented by making better decisions up stream.

Neuro-Associative Conditioning Neuro-Associative Conditioning or NAC is a science developed by Anthony Robbins

from the foundations of Neuro-Linguistic Programming or NLP which was developed by Richard Bandler and Dr. John Grinder. The science of Neuro-Associative Conditioning is a system that can create changes in human emotions and behavior based upon the premise that there are two determining reasons for human behavior: 1. The need to avoid pain and/or 2. The desire to gain pleasure

In order for the brain to efficiently evaluate how to rapidly accomplish these two tasks, we must create neuro-associations (physical and psychological associations within the nervous system) that are used to instantly determine the meaning (whether painful or pleasurable) of situations, people, things, sounds, emotions, etc.

Awaken the giant within-Anthony Robbins

According to this theory, these neuro-associations determine our representations of reality and are, therefore, the directing force of all human behavior.

The human Brain Cell: A neuron is an electrically excitable cell that processes and transmits information by electrical and chemical signaling

Anthony Robbins guides the reader through six steps to achieve NAC.

NAC MASTER STEP 1

Decide what you want and what is preventing you from having it now. The more specific one is towards what one wants more is the clarity on the path to achieve the same. One also needs to ascertain the factors that might pose as impediments. NAC MASTER STEP 2 Get leverage-associate massive pain to not changing now and massive pleasure of changing Now! Change may not be just a question of capability, it may also require motivation. With the right kind of leverage bringing about the change would be very effective. For example for a person intent on quitting Smoking the threat of Cancer may be quiet effective.

Awaken the giant within-Anthony Robbins

NAC MASTER STEP 3 Interrupt the limiting pattern-different way cause different result. One of the best ways to interrupt someones pattern is to do unexpected things. Often Cops while training civilians to face random acts of attack, ask the civilians to do something unexpected which puts the attacker off guard. This not only buys them time by distracting the attacker but also interrupts the attackers thought flow and thereby his intent. NAC MASTER STEP 4 Create a new, empowering alternative The key is for us to consciously choose the new behaviors or feelings with which we are going to replace the old ones. NAC MASTER STEP 5 Conditioning the new pattern until it's consistent If you rehearse the new, empowering alternative again and again with tremendous emotional intensity, youll carve out a pathway, and with even more repetition and emotion, it will become a highway to this new way of achieving results, and it will become a part of your habitual behavior.

NAC MASTER STEP 6 Test it. One must be absolutely certain about the working of ones neuro-associations and its working in the future.

HOW TO CHANGE ANYTHING IN YOUR LIFE: THE SCIENCE OF NEURO-ASSOCIATIVE CONDITIONING

Concept: The Science Of Neuro-Associative Conditioning (NAC) concept is the associations in

our nervous systems; as to what will create pain or pleasure in our lives. It states that if one wants to change his/her behavior, there is only one effective way to do it: we must link unbearable and immediate sensations of pain to our old behavior, and incredible and immediate sensation of pleasure to a new one. This thrives on the experiences of life, wherein we have learned certain patterns of thinking and behaving to get ourselves out of pain and into pleasure.

Steps to Implement NAC:

Decide What You Really Want and What's Preventing You From Having It Now. Get Leverage: Associate Massive Pain to Not Changing Now and Massive Pleasure to the Experience of Changing Now! Interrupt the Limiting Pattern. Create a New, Empowering Alternative. Condition the New Pattern Until It's Consistent. Test It!

HOW TO GET WHAT YOU REALLY WANT

Concept: The ability to get what one really wants is primarily based on the following factors:-

1. Emotional State at a particular instance. 2. Focus

The difference between performing poorly or brilliantly is not based on your ability, but on the state of our mind and/or body in any given moment. To change our performance, we must change our state. To open up the multitude of resources that lie within us, set ourselves in a state of resourcefulness and active expectancy. There are two primary ways, to change your emotional state: 1) By changing the way you use your physical body 2) By changing your focus

TYPES OF EMOTIONS AN INDIVIDUAL MIGHT FEEL IN A WEEK:

Stressed out Lonely Relieved

Frustrated Bored Loved

Angry Miserable Excited

Insecure Happy Joyous

FOCUS: THE POWER OF CONCENTRATION

WHATEVER WE FOCUS ON BECOMES OUR IDEA OF REALITY Consider a camera man goes to a party which comprises of two categories of groups.

One group is totally dull and the other group is having a jolly good time. Now if the Camera man clicks only snaps of the dull group, then the photo viewers will get an impression that the party was dull and boring. Whereas on the other hand if he clicked the snaps of enthusiastic people, it would depict the party was lively.

Awaken the giant within-Anthony Robbins

MEANING IS OFTEN A MATTER OF FOCUS While driving in case, you start to skid out of control, the tendency, of course, is to look

at the wall. If one keeps focusing on the wall, that's exactly where one will end up.

IT'S NOT ONLY WHAT YOU FOCUS ON BUT HOW Our experience of the world is created by gathering information through the use of our

five senses. Out of which one sense may be dominant than the others. These foundational ingredients are called Sub-modalities. The ability to visualize a picture in your mind and then take any aspect of that image (a sub-modality), and change it to change your feelings about it. Types of Sub-modalities are Visual Sub-modalities Auditory Sub-modalities Kinesthetic Sub-modalities

CREATE YOUR OWN BLUEPRINT

QUESTIONS ARE THE ANSWER

(Quality questions create a quality life.)

Concept: This concept thrives on the Role of Questions in order to find a solution to a particular. It

is the Quality and the Timing of the Questions that play a paramount role in understanding the gravity of a situation and channelizing the mind to tackle that problem. Questions are the best tool to retrieve anything one wants from their personal databanks (brain).

OUR QUESTIONS DETERMINE OUR THOUGHTS When the automobile was in its infancy, hundreds of people tinkered with building them,

but Henry Ford asked, "How can I mass-produce it?"

A SKILL OF POWER Learning to ask empowering questions in moments of crisis is a critical skill.

THE POWER OF PRESUPPOSITION Don't fall into the trap of accepting someone else's or your own disempowering

presuppositions.

JEOPARDY GAME A game where all the answers are thereall you have to do is come up with the right

questions to win.

PROBLEM-SOLVING QUESTIONS

1. What is great about this problem? 2. What is not perfect yet? 3. What am I willing to do to make it the way I want it? 4. What am I willing to no longer do in order to make it the way I want it? 5. How can I enjoy the process while I do what is necessary to make it the way I want it?

THE MORNING POWER QUESTIONS

1. What am I happy about in my life now? What about that makes me happy? How does that make me feel? 2. What am I excited about In my life now? What about that makes me excited? How does that make me feel?

Awaken the giant within-Anthony Robbins

11

3. What am I proud about in my life now? What about that makes me proud? How does that make me feel? 4. What am I grateful about In my life now? What about that makes me grateful? How does that make me feel? 5. What am I enjoying most in my life right now? What about that do I enjoy? How does that make me feel? 6. What am I committed to in my life right now? What about that makes me committed? How does that make me feel? 7. Who do I love? Who loves me? What about that makes me loving? How does that make me feel?

THE EVENING POWER QUESTIONS

1. What have I given today? In what ways have I been a giver today? 2. What did I learn today? 3. How has today added to the quality of my life or how can I use today as an investment in my future?

GIVE THE GIFT OF QUESTIONS Anthony Robbins asks these questions to others and makes them realize their pain and

pleasure aspects in life; further focusing on the pleasure aspect and leveraging their positive emotional state to a higher level

THE VOCABULARY OF ULTIMATE SUCCESS TRANSFORM YOUR VOCABULARY

Concept: The power of words to shape our individual realities is tremendous. We need carefully to

evaluate our own usage of words and consistently aspire to elevate and improve our vocabulary. We should use words that constantly empower us to think in terms of positivity and excellence.

We Are What We Say Linguists say that, culturally, we shape and are shaped by our language. Have you ever

noticed yourself adopt the habitual vocabulary of someone you associate closely with or admire? Interestingly, English has a predominance of verbs. In contrast, the Chinese language place a great deal of value on qualities of stillness and continuum, and the Chinese language features a predominance of names rather than verbs. Transforming our habitual vocabulary breaks un-resourceful patterns, produces totally different feelings, changes our emotional state and allows us to think in a more qualitative and elevated way. We cause problems for ourselves when we start habitually using words like furious and humiliated. We must consciously evaluate the impact of words we use on our emotional state or we risk creating more emotional pain than is necessary.

Turning down the Heat Try this when next you are overwhelmed with anger. Instead of thinking of and venting

your feelings as fury or outrage make a choice to express them like someone who might say they are feeling a little peeved. Your anger might just evaporate into a self-mocking smile.

Awaken the giant within-Anthony Robbins

13

Comedy of Errors The Power of words can work for or against your purpose. Either way, they are

powerful, so take care when handling a loaded word. Sometimes vocabulary is even more transformational than we bargain for a fact to which several major advertisers can attest After translating their slogan Pepsi gives life into Chinese, Pepsi executives were stunned to discover that theyd just spent millions of dollars announcing Pepsi Brings Your Ancestors Back from the Grave. Chevrolet, mystified by sluggish sales of its new Nova compact sedan in Latin America, eventually discovered that in Spanish the words no va mean It doesnt go.

THE POWER OF LIFE METAPHORS

Concept: The crux of this concept lies in understanding certain principles in life and the ability to

correlate with other things (or finding analogies) in order to form a concrete understanding of the information acquired. One such powerful tool is the use of right METAPHORS. By use of metaphors, one not only improves his/her subject matter expertise but is also able to clearly explain those concepts to others with equal ease. All great teachersBuddha, Mohammed, Confucius, Lao-Tzu have used metaphors to convey their meaning to the common man.

Emotions:

There are 4 ways to deal with the emotions. 1. Avoidance. 2. Denial. 3. Competition. 4. Learning and Using.

Awaken the giant within-Anthony Robbins

14

No need to wait for a special event to feel good about anything. Just decide to feel good and try to be happy in each and every single moment. However, the moment is so much irritating for you but still find out something to make it special. There are 6 steps to emotional mastery. 1. Identify what you are really feeling. 2. Appreciate your emotions. 3. Get curious about the message the emotion is offering you. 4. Get confident. 5. Get certain. 6. Get excited and take action.

There are so many action signals like discomfort, fear, hurt, anger, frustration, disappointment, guilt, overload, loneliness can be felt in our daily life. There are also some emotions of power like love, appreciation, curiosity, excitement, confidence, cheerfulness, vitality etc. are present in our life. You have to just plant all these emotions into your day to day life. The magnificent obsession-creating a compelling future: Giant goal produce giant motivation. When we first set large goals, they may seem impossible to achieve. It is like goals which take you beyond your limits and which gives inspiration to you every moment in your life. It converts invisible factor into clearly visible. Then one might have a question that why doesnt everyone set the goals? It is just because of mainly 2 reasons. First, they dont realize the value of making goals in life. Second, may be they set goals in past but they couldnt finished just because of some circumstances like their goals doesnt inspire them as much as one has to. Try to feel and live your dream. So many people set their goals and when some day it turns into reality then they become happy after that. But they forget to enjoy the journey of achieving that goal.

Awaken the giant within-Anthony Robbins

15

Now,one might have the question about how to make your goals real. For that, you must condition your nervous system in advance to feel the pleasure they will surely bring. Simply, at least twice a day, you must rehearse and emotionally enjoy the experience of achieving each one of your most valued goals. Each time you do to create more emotional joy as you see, feel and hear yourself living your dreams. The ultimate purpose of the goal is to set a continuous motion processional effects that have consequences even more for reaching than we ever intended. Now, implementation of these into reality is more important. Take full control of all your mental and emotional faculties by deciding right now that you will not indulge in or dwell on any unresourceful thoughts or emotions for 10 consecutive days. Remember, our goal is not to ignore the problems of life, but to put ourselves in better mental and emotional states where we can not only come up with solutions, but act upon them. Practically, never spend more than 10% of your time on the problem and spend at least 90% of your time on the solution. Ultimate influence-your master system: Superior evaluations create superior lives. Consider Wayne Gretzky of the Los Angeles Kings. He has scored more points than anyone in the history of the National Hockey League. What makes him so powerful? Is it because he's the biggest, strongest, or fastest player in the league? By his own admission, the answer to all three of these questions is no. Yet he was consistently the number-one scorer in the league. When asked what makes him so effective, his response is that while most players skate to where the puck is, he tends to skate to where the puck is going. At any moment in time, his ability to anticipateto evaluate the velocity of the puck, its direction, the present strategies and physical momentum of the players around him allows him to place himself in the optimum position for scoring.

Wealth is the result of effective evaluations. Here are the 5 elements about how our master system of evaluation works. 1. Mental and emotional state. 2. Master system is question we ask.

Awaken the giant within-Anthony Robbins

16

3. Hierarchy of value. 4. Beliefs. 5. Reference experience.

LIFE VALUES: YOUR PERSONAL COMPASS Concept:Values are essential to guide our every decision and, therefore, our destiny. Those who

know their values and live by them become the leaders of our society. They are exemplified by outstanding individuals throughout our nation, from the boardroom to the classroom. Life fulfillment is possible only by one way and that is by deciding upon what we value most in life, what our highest values are, and then committing to live by them every single day. If you've ever found yourself in a situation where you had a tough time making a decision about something, the reason is that you weren't clear about what you value most within that situation. We must remember that all decision making comes down to values clarification.

Example:IBM is an example of a corporation whose direction and destiny was set up by its founder, Tom Watson. How? He clearly defined what the company stood for, what would be most important for all people to experience regardless of what products, services, or financial climates they would enter in the future. He guided "Big Blue" into being one of the world's largest and most successful companies.

PREPARE FOR PAIN WHEN DON'T KNOW THE TRUE VALUES The life fulfillment is possible when the values are true and if it is not it cause or

experience intense pain.

Awaken the giant within-Anthony Robbins

17

Anytime you have difficulty making an important decision, you can be sure that it's the result of being unclear about your values. Example:What if you were asked to move your family across the country in connection with a new job? If you knew that there was some risk involved, but that the compensation would be better and the job would be more interesting, what would you do? How you answer this question will depend entirely on what's most important to you: personal growth or security. Your parents congratulated and supported you when you did things that agreed with their values, and when you clashed with their values, you were punished either physically, verbally, or through the pain of being ignored.

MOVING-AWAY-FROM VALUES Any time we make a decision about what to do, our brain first evaluates whether that

action can possibly lead to either pleasurable or painful states. Our brain is constantly juggling or weighing, your alternatives to see what the impact may be, based upon your value hierarchy. Example:If someone asked you to go skydiving, and the number-one emotion you try to avoid at all costs is a sense of fear, it's pretty obvious that you're not going to take action, are you? If, however, the number-one value you want to avoid at all costs is a feeling of rejection, and you believe that I may reject you if you don't go, you may decide to jump out of a plane in spite of your fear.

Awaken the giant within-Anthony Robbins

18

CHANGE YOUR VALUES, AND YOU CHANGE YOUR LIFE It is nothing but a program that could help a person redesign the life priorities of their

nervous system, to literally redirect the process of how people make all their decisions about how to think, how to feel, and what to do in virtually every area of their lives!

RULES: IF YOU'RE NOT HAPPY, HERE'S WHY! Concept:Its very important to understand the values are totally depends upon the rules and

beliefs about what has to happen to feel successful or happy or experiencing love. Rules must be organized in ways that allow us to adapt, grow, and enjoy. It's critical for us to understand these unconscious beliefs that control when we give ourselves pain and when we give ourselves pleasure.

HOW DO WE KNOW IF A RULE EMPOWERS OR DISEMPOWERS US? There are three primary criteria: It's a disempowering rule if it's impossible to meet. If your criteria are so complex or

varied or intense that you can't ever win the game of life, clearly you have a disempowering rule. A rule is disempowering if something that you can't control determines whether your rule has been met or not. A rule is disempowering if it gives you only a few ways to feel good and lots of ways to feel bad.

Awaken the giant within-Anthony Robbins

19

THE SOLUTION Making our lives work is set up a system of evaluating that includes rules that are

achievable, that make it easy to feel good and hard to feel bad, that constantly pull us in the direction we want to go. EVERY UPSET IS A RULES UPSET

Example:some people's rule for respect is, "If you respect me, then you never raise your voice." If a person with whom you're in a relationship suddenly starts to yell, you're not going to feel respected if this is your rule.

REFERENCES: THE FABRIC OF LIFE References are all the experiences of your life that you've recorded within your nervous

system everything you've ever seen, heard, touched, tasted, or smelled, stored away inside the giant file cabinet of your brain. Some references are picked up consciously, others unconsciously. Example:Not long ago I heard about a man who found $35,000 cash in a bag on the street. He instantly sought out and returned it to the owner. Everyone who heard the story wanted to congratulate this man, but he shied away from the media and refused to be filmed. He adamantly167 insisted that returning the money was the right and only thing he could do. It turned out that this money was the life savings of a sixty-eight-year-old woman, and through his one act he probably saved her financial life, yet he refused to take credit. Why? Clearly the references of his past had helped him to develop a belief that taking credit for doing what obviously was the right thing would be totally inappropriate. He didn't decide to avoid the recognition on a whim; he had a sense of certainty that only his life references could create.

Awaken the giant within-Anthony Robbins

20

READING IS FEEDING YOUR MIND Only the experience is not related with references you can borrow the references of other

people. Focusing on reading biographies of successful people and learned that regardless of their background or conditions, when they held on to their sense of certainty, and consistently contributed, success eventually came.

A UNIVERSE OF IDEAS AND EXPERIENCES Each day that we live, we're taking in new information, ideas, concepts, experiences, and

sensations. We need to consciously stand guard at the doors of our minds to make sure that whatever we're allowing to enter will cause our lives to be enriched, that the experiences we pursue will add to our stockpile of possibility.

IDENTITY: THE KEY TO EXPANSION It is simply the beliefs that we use to define our own individuality, what makes us unique

good, bad, or indifferent from other individuals. And our sense of certainty about who we are creates the boundaries and limits within which we live. Time and again, researchers have shown that students' capabilities are powerfully impacted by the identities they develop for themselves as the result of teachers' belief in their level of intelligence. Example:In one study, a group of teachers were told that certain students in their classes were truly gifted and to make sure that they challenged them to continue to expand. As can be expected, these children became the top achievers in their class.

Awaken the giant within-Anthony Robbins

21

What makes this study significant is that these students had not actually demonstrated higher levels of intelligence and, in fact, some had previously been labeled poor students. Yet it was their sense of certainty that they were superior that triggered their success.

THE ULTIMATE PAINSEEDS OF AN IDENTITY CRISIS:People who act inconsistently with who they believe they are set the stage for the

societal clich of an "identity crisis." When the crisis hits, they are immediately disoriented, questioning their previous convictions. Their whole world is turned upside down, and they experience an intense fear of pain. This is what happens to so many people having a "midlife crisis."

THE SEVEN DAYS TO SHAPE YOUR LIFE

DAY 1: Emotional Destiny: The only true success Taking control of your consistent emotions will help you begin to consciously and deliberately shape your daily experience of life. There are about 3,000 different words, each meaning a different emotion. But a life of an average person hardly consists of a dozen of them. Does this mean that we all are emotionally weak? The answer is NO in capital letters. It is rather the limitations of our present pattern of focus & physiology. The key is to conquer your emotions up to such an extent that you can rapidly change any emotion you desire.

Awaken the giant within-Anthony Robbins

22

DAY 2: Physical Destiny: Prison of pain or palace of pleasure? As you have learnt to condition your nervous system, the physical destiny you experience depends on how you condition your metabolism & muscles to provide the energy & fitness regularly. One example which would help you understand the same is as follows. Stu Mittleman had a vision of breaking the world record for 11 straight days, he had been running 21 hours a day & merely sleeping for the rest 3! This was indeed a physical & a mental challenge. What was his objective? It was to demonstrate the unlimited physical potential that lies locked within us all. Another main concept is understanding the difference between health and fitness. The concept of health first and then fitness follows is explained too.

DAY 3: Relationship destiny: The place to share and care. It is important to measurably enhance the quality of personal relationships and deepen your emotional connection with the people you care about. Six pointers have been mentioned which prove fruitful for the well being of any relationship. With easy explanations as to how a particular relation starts, its due course and if at it ends, then the reasons behind are explained in a simple, easy understood language.

DAY 4: Financial Destiny: Small steps to a small (or large) fortune. This deals with the lacking control of fundamental future by learning the 5 foundational elements for stabilizing wealth.

Awaken the giant within-Anthony Robbins

23

Money! Its the most important emotionally charged means of our lives. It is the most potent source of both pain and pleasure within our society. Many people make the mistake of thinking that all the challenges in their lives would dissipate if they just have enough money. Nothing could be more far than the truth. Money is said to fulfill our wishes but it many times happens that our wishes remain unquenched in order to earn money itself. There are also key steps given to create fundamental wealth which can work as work steps for achieving a high financial position in life.

DAY 5: Be Impeccable: Your code of conduct It is possible to have great values, to have all your rules aligned to support them, to be asking yourself the right questions, and not to be living your values in the moment. All of us at one time or another have let events control us, instead of controlling our states or our decisions as to what those events mean. We need a clear-cut way to ensure that we consistently live the values to which we've committed ourselves, and a way of measuring whether or not we're actually achieving that value on a daily basis.

DAY 6: Master you time and life Use time to your advantage rather than allowing it to rule your levels of satisfaction and stress. Take control of the time frame you're focusing upon. If the present is stressful, then become more resourceful in dealing with your challenges by focusing on the future and the successful completion or resolution of the tasks before you. This new focus will instantly change your state and give you the very resources you need to turn things around in the present.

Awaken the giant within-Anthony Robbins

24

DAY 7: Even God took one day off! Achieving some balance is the lesson learnt. When you've worked hard, take a day off to have some fun! Be spontaneous, be outrageous, do something that takes you outside yourself. As the quote suggests, "The great man is he that does not lose his child's-heart", always have a relaxed session after working hard.

THE ULTIMATE CHALLENGE: WHAT ONE PERSON CAN DO Perfection is not heroism; humanity is THE CHALLENGE OF HOMELESSNESS

Concept: Nothing could be more crippling to a person's ability to take action than learned

helplessness; it is the primary obstacle that prevents us from changing our lives or taking action to help other people change theirs. You have the power right now to control how you think, how you feel, and what you do. By trying to avoid pain in the short term, we often end up making decisions that create pain in the long term

Ultimate solution: What do you suppose is the one common element in all the problems facing us today as a

nation and as a world? From soaring numbers of homeless people to escalating crime rates to huge budget deficits to the slow strangulation of our ecosystem, the answer is that every single one of these problems was caused or set in motion by human behavior. Therefore, the solution to every one of these problems is to change our behavior

Awaken the giant within-Anthony Robbins

25

For Eg: when an individual becomes a gang member, that single decision sets in motion a whole series of behaviors and problems. With this new gang identity, he will hold himself to a very specific code of behavior which places utmost value on such things as loyalty to the group, and out of that flows a whole system of characteristic rules and behaviors. So many people want to avoid any hint of a problem or challenge, yet surmounting difficulty is the crucible that forms character. Many people don't discover their heroic nature until a major difficulty or life-threatening situation occurs and they must rise to the occasion because there is no other choice For Eg: Many people look at a person like Mother Teresa and assume that she was born to heroism. They claim that she's just an incredibly spiritual woman and that she's always been set apart by her commitment and selfless contribution to the poor. While it is true that she is a woman of extraordinary courage and compassion, it is also true that Mother Teresa had some crucial moments that defined her role as one of the great contributors of our time. Mother Teresa did not set out to help the poor. In fact, for over twenty years she taught the wealthiest children in Calcutta, India. Every day she overlooked the impoverished slums that surrounded the well-todo neighborhood in which she worked, never venturing outside her tiny sphere of influence. One night, as she was walking down the street, she heard a woman crying out for help. It was in the moment that this dying woman fell into her arms that Mother Teresa's life changed forever. Realizing the seriousness of the woman's condition, Mother rushed her to the hospital, where she was told to sit and wait. She knew the woman would die without immediate attention, so she took her to another hospital. Again, she was told to wait; the woman's social caste made her less important than the others being treated. Finally, in desperation, Mother Teresa took the woman home. Later that night, she died in the comfort of Mother Teresa's loving arms. Mother Teresa's "defining moment" had transpired: the moment when she decided that (his would never happen again to anyone within her reach. From that moment on she decided that she would devote her life to easing the pain of those who suffered around her and that, whether they lived or died, they would do so with dignity. She would personally do everything in her power to see that they would be treated better than they had ever been treated their entire lives, with the love and respect that all people deserve.

26

I believe that in the deepest part of ourselves, we all want to do what we believe is right, to go beyond ourselves, to commit our energy, time, emotion, and capital to a larger cause. We must meet our moral and spiritual needs even if it brings us pain in the short term. We respond not just to our psychological needs, but to our moral imperative to do more and be more than anyone could expect. Nothing gives us a greater sense of personal satisfaction than contribution. Giving unselfishly is the foundation of fulfillment.

27

Conclusion: This books even if written in 1990, but every concept holds today too. The book more or less is a awakening call for the young as well as older generations. The book itself is a personality development workshop right in your hands and so its a fantastic tool. Its not just pages of information, but it is truly a tool to help you take your life to the next level. One of the major things that grabbed us about the book, is that in the very beginning, the author starts off with a story, where he is in a helicopter, and as he is flying over a city on his way to a seminar, the one which he is giving, he notices off at distance, a building and he realizes that around a decade earlier he worked in the same building as a mere janitor..! This statement caught our attention the most. The story goes on to say that he realizes there is a huge amount of traffic on the way to his seminar hall. Soon he realizes that the traffic is of the people coming to listen to him, meet him or at least see him.
