This class will focus on the geographical, political, and material history of America from the time of European Invasion through the Civil War and Reconstruction. Lecture, discussion, reading, writing, and artistic creation, and formal examination will all be used in this class to ensure that each student is both challenged and able to tap into the way that they most effectively learn. Evaluative Elements: Attendance and Punctuality (5%) o Loss of 1% for every tardy o Automatic Failure in case of 8 combined tardy/absences or 4 absences (missing more than thirty minutes of any part of the class will result in an absence) Classroom Comportment (15%) o Loss of 2% for cell phone or ipod use Touching your cell phone or ipod constitutes use o Loss of 2% for table defacement Includes defacement with any instrument, even chalk. If you like to doodle, get some paper. o Points given for positive participation Energy, enthusiasm, question asking, and thoughtful opinions are just some examples of positive participation o Points taken for negative, disruptive, or distracting behavior at the instructors discretion Talking to neighbors, passing notes, sleeping, and unnecessary cussing are just some examples of negative participation Mapping Projects (25%) o Eastern Seaboard Natives (5%) o Shades of Blackness (Atlantic Coast Slave Trade) (8%) o Expansion of a Nation (5%) o Yankees and Rebels (7%) Response Paper (10%) o 300-word response paper (See handout for paper guidelines) Final Project (30%) o Subject Portrait (10%) An 8 x 11 portrait, untraced, in any media of the subject o Subject Biography (20%) A 500-word biography of the subject, including his/her historical actions and significance (See handout for paper guidelines) Final Multiple Choice Exam (15%)
