oal accounts for over 50% of Indias commercial energy consumption and about 78% of domestic Coal Production is dedicated to power. The recent report on Integrated Energy Policy by The Planning Commission has reaffirmed that this dominence of Coal in Indias energymix is not likely to change till 2031-32. The rapid strides in Indias economic growth makes the role of Coal even more pronounced and critical. The total energy requirement is expected to quadruple from 315 mtoe to 1500 mtoe by the year 2030-31 with contribution of coal soaring to as high as 2 billion tones/ annum from a current level of 460 million tonnes/annum. This rapid growth of coal sector is thus primordial for the projected economic growth of the country. Realising the importance of Coal, India Energy Forum (IEF), Mining, Geology & Metallurgical Institute of India (MGMI) and Indian Coal Forum had jointly organized Coal Summit 2005 in October 2005 in New Delhi with the active support of Ministry of Coal and Coal India which for the first time brought to the fore the various challenges before the coal industry and their possible solutions. This was perhaps the largest coal conference ever held in Delhi and we were indeed overwhelmed by the response from the participants, policy makers and sectoral players. The target of producing 2 billion tones of Coal by 2031 is very challenging indeed and will need comprehensive packages of initiatives on many fronts including Policy Frame Work; Mining Technologies both for opencast and underground mining; Improving coal handling and transportation; Innovative safety and HRD policies; Improving coal benefication and thermal efficiency; Adopting latest available plant and equipment and above all learning from the most successful coal producing countries. This Second Summit aims to cover all these issues in depth and draw a realistic Road Map for the Future. All the stakeholders in the industry will be involved and their respective perceptions and concerns will be addressed. The Summit will therefore provide a unique opportunity to the participants of not only understanding the main issues impacting the growth of the sector but also to interact with key players.

Objectives
Highlight the key development issues requiring resolution for accelerating the pace of development of coal sector specially underground mining Meeting the challenges of competitiveness in coal production sector through innovative approaches in management practices, application of technology and environmental protection. Increasing the utilization of coal in more efficient and environmentally acceptable modes. Initiatives required for over coming the impediments and increasing the Indian/ foreign investment in the Indian Coal industry nationally and internationally.

ORGANIZERS
India Energy Forum is a unique, independent, non-profit research organisation and represents energy sector as a whole. The Forums mission is the development of a sustainable and competitive energy sector, promoting a favourable regulatory framework, establishing standards for reliability and safety, ensuring an equitable deal for consumers, producers and the utilities, encouraging efficient and ecofriendly development and use of energy and developing new and better technologies to meet the growing energy needs of the society. Its membership includes all the key players of the sector including NTPC, NHPC, Power Grid Corporation, Power Finance Corporation, Reliance Energy, ONGC, Indian Oil Corporation, Neyveli Lignite, Coal India, Tata Power, Vestas RRB, Unocal, Alstom and over 80 highly respected energy experts. The Mining Geological & Metallurgical Institute of India (MGMI) Delhi Chapter. MGMI is one of the oldest professional Institutes of its kind in Asia having being founded in 1906 celebrated its centenary last year. It has been organizing conferences and seminars on issues impacting the mineral sciences. MGMI is a unique, independent, non-profit organization and represents professionals of the mineral sector as a whole. It is manned by highly qualified and experienced mining engineers, geologists and metallurgists and energy experts.
