Objective
The purpose of the course is to de-
velop an understanding about the pri-
mary concepts and applications of
knowledge management, particularly
those concepts that are relevant to
information professionals. Participants
will be able to appreciate the potential
applications of knowledge manage-
ment and the career opportunities
expected to be created by KM appli-
cations in corporate and public sector
organizations. The course will develop
critical insights about further studies
and professional enhancement oppor-
tunities.
Who May Attend?
The course is designed keeping in
view the needs of information profes-
sionals who may include executives,
managers, systems managers, sys-
tems analysts, and library and infor-
mation professionals working in public
and private sector organizations. No
prior background in KM work or IT is
required.
Topics to be Covered
PART I: CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK
(Day One)
• Fundamental concepts of knowledge man-
agement
• Technological support and infrastructure
services for KM work
• Organizational enablers for knowledge
management
• Roles and responsibilities for knowledge
management work; KM competencies for
information professionals
• Knowledge sharing concepts and applica-
tions (case studies of knowledge manage-
ment in different organizations)
PART II: IMPLEMENTING KM IN ORGANI-
ZATIONS (Day Two and Three)
Preparation and organizational readiness
assessment; practical steps for initiating knowl-
edge management projects, and deployment of
appropriate strategies and best practices for suc-
cessful km environment (Case study of imple-
mentation of KM in Singapore Polytechnic)
Identifying existing knowledge assets in the enter-
prise: conducting knowledge and information audit
for monitoring and evaluating an organization’s infor-
mation and knowledge assets for their utilization to
support knowledge management initiatives in an or-
ganization.
Environment scanning for surveying external
knowledge: environment scanning steps, useful
sources, and environment scanning based information
products and services.
Developing knowledge architecture for storing and
organizing knowledge: application of taxonomies
and other knowledge organization schemes for en-
hancing knowledge discovery (Case studies of deploy-
ing taxonomies in electronic knowledge repository
systems and intranets in Singapore)
Instructional Approach
A combination of presentations, case stud-
ies, and field experiences will be used for the
conduct of the course. Participant interaction
is encouraged through questions and discus-
sions. Course will be spread over six hours a
day on three working days with a total of 18
hours of instruction time.
