Medford Township Mayor
Chris Myers addressed the public
at a recent special council meet-
ing regarding the scandal in
which he is embroiled.
Sometime in October, a man
claiming to be a male escort post-
ed a photo of what appears to be
Myers in his underwear and also
stated he has a photo of the
mayors ID card. The photos were
posted anonymously on a website
that is no longer available.
The anonymous person also
said Myers paid him $500 for sex
in October 2010 at a hotel in Cali-
fornia. He said he publicized the
photos because the mayor
welched on promises made.
I deny the allegations, Myers
said. Anyone can do what they
want anonymously on the Inter-
net.
He then said he would make no
further comments.
The scandal has been fodder
for the likes of Jay Leno and
Keith Olbermann on the national
stage as well as internationally.
Fellow councilman Bob Mar-
tin said he thinks the situation is
terrible for Myers wife and
children.
You just dont know whether
its true or not, Martin said.
His personal life is his personal
life.
While he said he would never
ask Myers to resign and that the
scandal has not changed his view
of the mayor, Martin recognizes
what it does to the perception of
the town.
Any kind of thing that puts a
black mark on a council member
affects the township because we
are the township, he said.
Glenn Lawless owns Main
Street Vacuum Center on Main
Street.
I think its appalling, Law-
less said. It gives the town a bad
name, its a smear on the town-
ship of Medford.
He said he feels politicians
think they can get away with any-
thing but ultimately, almost al-
ways get caught.
When they do I think they
should just resign from their po-
sitions, Lawless said. Its bad
for business, bad for the commu-
nity.
Deputy Mayor Mark Sander
said he does not think the mayor
should resign.

The controversial Medford
Crossings development plan is
dead at least for now.
Medford Township Council
held a special meeting recently
where it decided to not move for-
ward with the plan. The declara-
tion of the action drew thunder-
ous applause from the standing-
room-only audience.
At a meeting over the summer,
a special blue-ribbon committee,
tasked with exploring the possi-
bility of developing that area, rec-
ommended the township not
move forward.
One major determination was
that the township should not float
a $35 million bond to help pay for
the development.
It said a more reasonable
amount might be $10 million or
nothing at all.
According to Lennar Corpora-
tion, the designated redeveloper
of Medford Crossings, the site sit-
uated around the intersection of
Route 70 and Eayrestown Road
was to be a mixed-use retail and
residential project.
The plan included 167 single-
family homes, 260 apartments, 149
townhomes, 120 stacked town-
homes, and 60 affordable housing
units.
It also called for about 600,000
square feet for commercial pur-
poses.
Councilman Bob Martin is
pleased with the vote.
Its great. Im very happy
about it, Martin said. Im glad it
went in the direction it did.
But because approval was
granted by the planning board in
2006, the owner has until 2016 to
develop the land.
It can happen, Martin said of
the owner bringing in new plans
for the area.
He said he started to look more
closely at the project after getting
the memorandum of understand-

I understand that hes denied
the charges against him and I be-
lieve him, Sander said.
Councilman David Brown
agreed.
Hes denied it, Brown said. I
believe him.
Brown said he has no idea why
someone would want to smear
the mayor but said it happens all
the time to people in public office.
Councilman Dominic Grosso
had no comment on the subject.
Republican candidate for coun-
cil James Randy Pace called
the scandal an unfortunate situ-
ation and asked that people pray
for the mayor and his family.
I wouldnt like to see Mr.
Myers resign because of an alle-
gation, Pace said. The financial
condition were in I think says a
whole lot more about Mr. Myers
than any scandal.
Independent candidate for
council George Youngkin said he
would not comment on the
mayors personal life.
Donna Symons, a 28 year resi-
dent of Medford called Myers
comments ridiculous.
I think that hes being a poor
role model in the way he is re-
sponding to the allegations and
should resign in the best interest
of the community, Symons said,
noting her perception of the
mayor has been altered. We
should be looking up to our
mayor as a respected authority
figure and at this point hes lost
the confidence of the majority of
residents.
Christine Balentine, a Medford
resident for 26 years, thinks
Myers called the special meeting
to have a large audience to pro-
claim his innocence and to
change focus from scandal to
Medford Crossings.
If theyre not true, then why
isnt he making every effort to
find out? It makes no sense to
me, Balentine said. If youre a
victim, why arent you trying to
clear your name?
She said Myers should ab-
solutely resign.

Myers addresses public
about escort allegations
The following were taken from
reports on file with the Medford
Police Department.
On Wednesday, Oct. 19 at ap-
proximately 8:40 p.m., Medford
Township Police were dispatched
to a fire alarm activation at a
home on Wilderness Drive. While
en-route, central communica-
tions received a second 911 call in-
dicating the home was on fire.
The initial-responding officers
found the single family dwelling
with heavy fire showing. Officers
ensured the residents were out of
the home. Firefighters from Med-
ford Township-Taunton Fire
Company and Union Fire Compa-
ny, along with Evesham and Indi-
an Mills fire departments re-
sponded to the blaze and placed
the fire under control a short
time later. Medford Township
Emergency Medical Services
were also on location and trans-
ported a 52-year-old female
(homeowner) to Virtua Hospital
in Marlton for medical evalua-
tion. There were no reports of
any injuries to emergency per-
sonnel on the scene. The fire is
currently under investigation by
the Medford Township Criminal
Investigations Bureau and the
Medford Township Fire Mar-
shalls Office, but does not appear
suspicious in nature.
On Monday, Oct. 31 police re-
sponded to a construction site on

ing from Lennar.
We worked at it and worked at
it but couldnt find a compro-
mise, Martin said.
He also praised the blue ribbon
committee for its input.
They did an excellent job,
Martin said. They helped me
tremendously because I listened
to those guys.
They put a lot of time and ef-
fort into it, he added. For me, I
thought they were just wonderful
and liked what I heard.
Mayor Chris Myers seemed to
take the decision in stride.
As we said before, we werent
going to go forward with any deal
that we couldnt make an agree-
ment on, Myers said, noting
that, given the budget situation
and approvals already in place,
they had to look at the project.
We gave this a really good faith
look.
Its unfortunate that we could-
nt close but were not going to
make a bad deal for the town, he
added.
Myers said the blue-ribbon
committee was a good part of
the process.
While there was a lot of argu-
ment and discussion about the
plan, the mayor said council
heard from all sides.
We listened to everybody and
weighed all the different aspects,
Myers said.
Independent candidate for
council George Youngkin warned
of a backlash.
I certainly applaud that deci-
sion but I dont think its dead
yet, Youngkin said of the situa-
tion, noting the owner could file
suit with the township for not al-
lowing him to develop.
I believe the townships going
to be on the hook for a lot of
money, he said. I think we could
be liable for some of that money.
Youngkin also lauded the blue-
ribbon committee.
I thought they did an excellent
job, he said. They provided the
residents with a lot of informa-
tion.
Youngkin said he does not
think the present council was
communicative enough with the
public.
Republican candidate for coun-
cil James Randy Pace said Med-
ford residents have not wanted
Medford Crossings for some
time.
Through a great deal of effort
and time from hundreds of dedi-
cated residents, we finally had an
impact on that governing body,
Pace said of council. Unfortu-
nately, the cost that weve already
incurred is not going to be re-
couped until that governing body
gets changed out.
I think its a good decision. I
applaud Mr. Martin, he added. I
think its unfortunate the rest of
people on council didnt see it
sooner.
Pace said he and a handful of
others started sitting in on coun-
cil meetings about two-and-a-half
years ago.
We recognized the only way
we can change the way our gov-
ernment works is to simply take
control of that government and
by raising public consciousness,
he said. The more people you
make aware of there being a
problem the more people get in-
volved to fix what the problem is.
Pace said the new government
to be sworn in in January will
have the support of the public.
Before a decision is made the
public needs to be able to weigh
in, he said.

for a motor-vehicle violation.
While speaking to the man, it was
determined that he was in posses-
sion of a bottle of rum in the rear
seat of the vehicle. The man was
placed under arrest. The suspect
was processed, issued two motor
vehicle summonses and released
on summons complaint pending a
municipal court date.
On Oct. 29 at 8:22 p.m. police
were on patrol in the Hoot Owl
Development when they observed
a 2003 Mercury Topaz in a ditch
on Georgia Trail at Maine Trail.
Upon police approaching the ve-
hicle, the driver exited from the
front drivers side. Police ob-
served heroin packaging material
fall out of the vehicle and onto
the ground. Police also observed a
multi-colored glass smoking pipe
and a small plastic bag contain-
ing marijuana on the front pas-
senger seat. The driver was
placed under arrest and upon a
search of his person multiple
baggies of heroin and a hypoder-
mic needle were located in his
front pants pockets. The suspect
was charged with possession of a
controlled-dangerous sub-
stance/CDS (Heroin), possession
of CDS (Marijuana), possession
of CDS paraphernalia, posses-
sion of a hypodermic syringe,
possession of CDS in a motor ve-
hicle and released on a summons
complaint pending a future court
appearance.
On Nov. 2 at 2:44 p.m. police re-
sponded to a residence in the 1300
block of Stokes Road for the re-
port of a burglary. The subse-
quent investigation revealed that
sometime between 6:40 a.m. and
2:44 p.m. an unknown subject
shouldered the front door and en-
tered the residence. Once inside,
the subject checked drawers and
cabinets in every room of the res-
idence. Numerous jewelry items
were taken as well as a set of ster-
ling silverware, valued at over
$20,000. This incident is under in-
vestigation by the Medford Town-
ship Police Criminal Investiga-
tions Bureau.

y now, the votes have been
counted and, barring a really,
really close election, the re-
sults are known. The winners will
take their positions in the near future,
and, if they were incumbents, contin-
ue along the same path. If they are
newcomers, anticipate some new ideas
and changes in direction.
If you learned about the candidates
and then cast an informed vote, con-
gratulate yourself. You played an im-
portant role in our republic the
basic role, if you will. We elect repre-
sentatives to carry out the will of the
voters. Yesterday, voters made their
thoughts known.
Now, however, comes the follow-
through or lack of follow-through
on the part of those who received the
most votes.
During every campaign, promises
are made. Goals are set. Priorities are
determined. Candidates are elected
largely on what they tell the voters
they will do if voters give them the job.
They now have the job. Lets make
sure they deliver on those campaign
promises.
Your job, as a voter and a resident, is
to not walk away now and wait for the
next election. Your job now is to pay
attention to those people who are
about to take office. Are they doing
what they said they would do? Or, did
they forget about all of the promises
they made? Did their commitment to
public service carry on past the time
the polls closed?
Over the coming days, weeks,
months and years, those elected to
public office will have a chance to ei-
ther deliver for their constituents, or
not.
Its your job to pay attention, call
them when they fail and, if necessary,
vote them out the next time theyre up

Conferences, Gottfried, Sweeney, pitbull
Parent/teacher conferences:
What are they really saying?
As parent/teacher conferences quickly
approach, parents and teachers are both a
little anxious. After all, its usually the one
and only time parents get to talk to their
childs teacher alone and solely about their
child, and its the teachers opportunity to
discuss the successes and failures a child
might be experiencing. Yes, I said failures.
Its hard to swallow sometimes but chil-
dren do fail. Why they failed or are failing
is the important point to focus on.
Teachers are told to always start with a
positive. After all, teachers should be rec-
ognizing and teaching to students
strengths. When you are in a conference
and the teacher has not mentioned
strengths your child may possess, as the
parent, you need to make a point of asking
for them to talk about it. If you have al-
ready been in contact with your childs
teacher, writing a list of questions or con-
cerns before you go into the conference is
also a worthwhile idea. Lets face it folks,
teachers usually have their own agenda
during a conference. More often than not,
teachers have to fill out a conference
sheet as documentation of having met
and what transpired things that were dis-
cussed, recommended (both behaviorally
and academically) and an explanation of
the childs report card.

Stephen Sweeney still
dines out as a Freeholder
The president of the state senate is re-
portedly still dining out on the re-election
fund for his former job.
Democratic Sen. Stephen Sweeney is
still taking people out to political dinners
and charging it to his old Sweeney for Free-
holder account, even though he quit the
Gloucester County freeholders in Decem-
ber, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.
Since leaving the freeholders on Dec. 31,
2010, Sweeney has spent from the account,
giving away some as political donations,
while also spending $765 for cigars at
Greentree Tobacco in Sewell, $1,117.95 for a
dinner at the Prime Rib in Washington and
$113.35 for dinner at Filomenas in Dept-
ford.
With these and other outings, he spent
more than $12,000 just on political dinners.
Jeffrey Brindle, executive director of the
state Election Law Enforcement Commis-
sion, did not express any particular con-
cern about this when speaking with the In-
quirer. Former officeholders often main-
tain their old campaign accounts after
theyve left office, he said. Its fine, as long
as these were political dinners, not person-
al.

Man lifts woman over fence,
dodges pitbull, saves a life
A young man in Seabrook had just a
heck of a time saving his neighbors life re-
cently an effort that involved lifting an in-
jured woman over a high fence just to way-
lay a pitbull, according to The News of
Cumberland County.
The problem for 25-year-old Marquis
Hart was to help Kazuo Kobayashi, an eld-
erly, disabled resident who had fallen in his
home, cracking his head and getting
pinned under his wheelchair.
Unfortunately, the front door had locked
when Kobayashis wife had run outside in
a panic looking for help, and the window
wouldnt open. So Hart climbed a fence
into the yard to reach the backdoor.
This, of course, is where the pitbull was
waiting for him.

According to the Virginia Tech

It is really important to bring
awareness of this safety issue to

The final phase of intersection
improvements for Church Road
(County Route 616), Wilkins Sta-
tion Road and New Freedom Road
in Medford is scheduled to begin
on or about Wednesday, Nov. 9.
The intersection will be closed
to all traffic for up to 35 days and
all three roads will be open to
local traffic only to the intersec-
tion. A detour will be posted to
Medford-Mount Holly Road
(CR541) to NJ Route 70 East to
Eayrestown Road.
The storm-drain improve-
ments in advance of the intersec-
tion improvements will be com-
pleted by Nov. 9.
The intersection-realignment
plan was endorsed by Medford of-
ficials and includes lowering the
profile of Church Road by 2.5 feet
at the intersection. The hump
in the road is caused by an out-of-
service railroad bed.
Both Wilkins Station and New
Freedom roads then will be re-
aligned to intersect with Church
Road at 90-and-70 degree angles,
respectively, to improve safety,
and turn lanes added on Church
Road at both future intersections.
Traffic volume does not warrant
a signal at this time.
The $1.2 million project is
being constructed by SJA Con-
struction, Inc. of Marlton.
Church Road construction

The iconic statue of Our Lady
of Lourdes sits 185 feet above
street level, atop Our Lady of
Lourdes Medical Center in Cam-
den, with her hands gently folded
in prayer.
But last week, the blessed
woman who has been a symbol of
hope for both the city and the hos-
pital, needed some prayers of her
own.
The 15-ton limestone statue,
one of the largest in the country,
was not immune to the earth-
quake that surprised the region
in late August.
The statue shifted as a result of
the earthquake, causing her to re-
ceive a large vertical crack down
her side, Lourdes officials said.
Staff and engineers inspected
the statue and determined the
best way to fix her would be to
take her down in parts. Because
of her size and location, officials
decided to take down her top half,
which includes three layers her
head, her praying hands and
rosary, and her midsection. Her
bottom portions will remain on
top of the hospital.
We look forward to the repair
of Our Lady of Lourdes, as this
means we are one step closer to
returning her back to her origi-
nal condition, said Alexander J.

Statue getting a makeover at
Lourdes Medical Center
please see LOURDES, page 12
Hatala, president and CEO of
Lourdes Health System. After
thoughtful consideration, and in
collaboration with our contractor,
we decided to take her down in
sections. Given the age of the stat-
ue, its location directly on top of
the hospital and the location of
the crack, it was determined that
repairing in place was not an op-
tion.
Last week, contractors deli-
cately lifted and removed the top
three portions of the statue and
placed them on a truck, whisking
her away to safety. Shell come
back in about six to eight weeks
looking brand new, Lourdes
spokeswoman Lauren Ward said.
And, shell be sporting a new,
environmentally friendly halo.
Currently, Ward said, her halo is
lit up by neon. But once she un-
dergoes her makeover, the halo
that lights up Haddon Avenue
will use LED lighting.
Her recent injury is not exactly
a first.
Workers began to install her on
the roof in 1949, just prior to the
opening of the hospital. Officials
said during early construction, a
cable holding the statues head
snapped, sending a beam flying
across the tower. She almost fell
seven stories to the ground.
The hospitals first adminis-
trator, Sister Mary Paracleta,
wrote a note and placed it inside
the head asking Our Lady of
Lourdes to protect the city and its
residents. The note was sewn into
X-ray film to protect it. Bishop
Eustace also placed a small relic
of St. Francis inside the head,
Ward said.
Prayer has proved its power for
the statue in the past. Neighbors,
patients and employees are hop-
ing their prayers are heard again.
Residents across the region
have been deeply saddened to see
Our Lady in her present condi-
tion. Many locals have stories
about the statue and how it has
played a significant role in their
lives, Ward said. Whether serv-
ing as a holy figure to pray to or a
comforting light outside their
window at night, residents have
found meaning and purpose in
Our Lady.
