A Special opportunity for your students

The Washington Center is pleased to once again offer its series of presidential campaign seminars. The Campaign 2012 Academic Seminar Series will kick off with our Inside Washington 2012 program. This academic seminar is an essential resource for college students (and faculty) interested in learning more about what goes on behind the scenes in the nations capital. Combining lectures, site visits, tours and special events, it is one of the best ways to see the impact of the political process and learn how national leaders address important issues. Students have the option to attend one or both weeks offered. The program features major speakers in the morning. Faculty leaders oversee small group discussions and site visits to governmental organizations, think tanks, embassies, etc. in the afternoons. Program activities also include a bus tour of Washington, D.C. and a weekly evening eventa dinner, reception or other special activity.

Seminar Overview
Week One: In Pursuit of the Presidency
January 28, 2012 With the presidential primaries and caucuses scheduled to begin in February 2012, In Pursuit of the Presidency examines how presidential hopefuls pursue the nations most prominent elected office. This seminar also scrutinizes the influential roles of national and state parties, lobbyists, pollsters, and consultants. Campaign strategists, party officials, and veterans of past campaigns will examine this high stakes race through a series of stimulating discourses, site visits, tours, briefings and small group discussions.

Week Two: Politics and the Media

January 814, 2012 Politics and the Media examines the uneasy but essential relationship between presidential candidates and the media that often shapes the course of presidential campaigns. Some of Americas most respected political journalists, news directors, and campaign consultants will help students understand the intricate relationship between the media and campaign politics. Similar in format to the previous week, the seminar also involves lectures, tours, site visits, briefings and small group discussions.

Week Two: Politics and the Media

Faculty Participation
Faculty members are invited to apply to serve as faculty leaders. If chosen they will receive a stipend and free housing and are assigned to work with up to 15 students for the duration of the program. They direct the small-group discussions and serve as advisers, facilitators, and supervisors for the participants. They are also responsible for providing a recommended grade for each student. Faculty members who accompany 10 or more students from their home institution will serve as their faculty leader and receive free housing and a stipend while accompanying their students.

The seminar is taught as a course, with two weeks equivalent to 34 credit hours (or 12 credits for one week). Faculty leaders complete a written evaluation and recommend a grade that is sent to each students home institution. Evaluation is based upon attendance, participation in group sessions, completion of assigned readings, quality of written assignments and demonstrated effort to achieve established academic and professional learning objectives commensurate with each students level. Actual credit and grades are awarded by a students home institution through each campus/faculty liaison. The Washington Center does not grant academic credit.
