Since The Jet is the most popular of all Ossekeag characters and I do mean characters, I will do a little update. As you know The Jet is big but also very sensitive!! And its not just his sensitive personality, he also happens to have very sensitive skin. Last year during the summer, he developed a nasty rash that spread throughout much of his belly area. Two weeks of pills and he was as good as gold!! This year he didnt get sensitive until October, so it was back to the vet and another round of pills!! However, during the visit with the vet, there was another disturbing find ... in a matter of months, it appears that The Jet had gained five pounds. The Jet is also very sensitive to two months of unlimited access to apples!! Shortly after his vet visit, The Jet turns around and suddenly becomes sensitive to his pills!! After 28 rounds of pills last year and seven rounds of pills this year, he started leaving pills uneaten in his food dish!! So I immediately switch strategies and started giving him the pills first. This wasnt working really well, so I sprinkled a small amount of kibble on top for inspiration and he quickly learned that the only way to get a full meal was for those pills to disappear. He has now completed this round of medication and is well on the road to recovering from his sensitivities. Time will tell if an apple free diet will also bring a turn around to his weight gain!! The only other issue that The Jet is sensitive to is meal time!! He normally has breakfast around 7:30 and supper around 5:15. There is some variation to this on occasion, but it is pretty routine for him to eat at these times. Without fail, whenever, he thinks that a meal is due, he starts to get bouncy. All 90 + pounds starts to wiggle, squirm and jump about without any outside assistance. On occasion, however, The Jets idea of when mealtime should be and when I think it should be are sometimes quite different. Faced with the fact that I am totally ignoring him, he finally settles down, but will follow me the instant that I make any move whatsoever. When I am sitting still, The Jet watches me with an intensity that seems to say, Do you want to feed me or would you prefer to be my next meal??. Unfortunately for The Jet I am not even a tiny bit sensitive!!

A SMALL TOWN CHRISTMAS

Staff and students at Hampton Middle School would like to celebrate Hampton residents Allison Chorley and Laurie Mills for their mentoring of the schools Gardening Club. Guided by Allison and Laurie in June, our club planted flowers in the pots at the side and front of the school. Allison and Laurie also led the planting (from seed) of a variety of vegetables in the Hampton Community Garden. The club celebrated the harvesting of our garden plot with a Salad Party and Laurie supervised the donation of our harvest (like over a bushel of tomatoes!) to the Hampton Food Basket. A huge thanks goes to the staff of Hampton Elementary School for the use of their greenhouse to grow the seedlings and another big thanks goes out to members of the Community Garden who helped to till our plot. Laurie is now leading in the repotting of the plants in our Level 5 Foyer. We also celebrate Chas MacKay for hosting two of our classes for an apple picking field trip at his orchard and for his generous donation of apples. 114

The Rotary Club of Hampton held their annual second hand book sale on October 14th & 15th. This years sale was our most successful to date thanks to the support of a great many people in our local community. We wish to acknowledge the many people who have contributed books over the course of 12 months. Thank you also to everyone who attended the sale and purchased books. We especially value the assistance of Kathy and Thelma Floyd and John LeDrew of Floyds Store which was our drop off depot for the books as well as the assistance of one non-Rotarian, Maria Machum who helped us in setting up the this sale. On October 17th, Paul and Nyla Scully were our guests for a presentation on their year of teaching in China. On October 24th our speaker was Mary ODonnell of the Moncton West Riverview Club who is the chair of the Rotary District Shortterm Student Exchange Program. At present we are planning for our Rotary clubs Purple Pinkie for Polio program which will be presented to the students of five elementary and middle schools in late November and early in 2012. This program raises awareness in the children of Rotary Internationals program to eradicate polio from the world and gives them a chance to make a small donation of money in return for having one of their fingernails painted purple. At present there are only four countries remaining in the world where polio is still endemic. When children are immunized in these countries, one of their fingernails is dyed purple, using an indelible dye in order to prevent double immunization. Our exchange student, Joe Roy, is now with his third host family. He has finished playing rugby which was a highlight of his fall activities. He has also attended one gathering of the new inbound students who are in this district as well as in the district to the east that includes Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. He will also be attending a Peace Weekend very soon. Our club has also begun thinking about our annual Rotary Trivia night when teams of eight people compete for Rotary donations to the charity of the top three teams choice. This will also take place in early 2012. You might want to start thinking about who you might like to have on a team to compete in this fun evening. Thats Rotary! 108 Adult Badminton will take place on Wednesday evenings at the Hampton High School, 8:30pm. For more information contact Ron Clark at 832-1972. 118

Members of the Hampton High School Theatre Company are busy preparing for their fall production; Around the World in 80 Days will be performed November 23rd, 24th, 25th & 26th (curtain time 7:30pm). Adapted for the stage by Mark Brown, from the novel by Jules Verne, the story centers around British adventurer Phileas Fogg (Anthony Duchesne) who gambles most of his fortune to prove that he can circle the globe in a mere 80 days. Set in 1872, Mr. Fogg and his faithful servant Passepartout (Damon Gordon) encounter countless wild characters as they attempt to circle the globe in record time. The role of Detective Fix, the frustrated detective whos convinced that Fogg is a bank robber, will be played by Devon Ellis. Princess Aouda will be played by Emily Preeper. Additional cast members include Christopher Donovan, Nell Henderson, Paul Duchesne, Alyssa Boudreau, MacKenzie Galbraith, Ryan Mullet, Georgie Milburn, Dimitri Peddle, Brooke Cheeks, Emily Desroches, Rosalynd Mitchell and Alex Fraser. A large Tip of the Hat goes out to members of the Atlantic Community Church in Hampton who were busy volunteering their time throughout the community of Hampton during the week of October 17th but we especially caught them in the act of volunteering at Hampton Elementary School. The playground surface needed to be dug up in order to place some much needed pea gravel under the play structures. Seven members of the church and a town employee with a town owned loader came at 9:00am and stayed all day to clear the existing mulch and dig six inches with shovels. Other members of the church provided lunch for the workers and a few students at HES served the volunteers the lunch and dessert. Throughout the week other church members came to the school to read to students and have lunch with them. They also volunteered to record stories on i-pods and pick up garbage around the school property. The hard work of these individuals is immeasurable and their selfless acts do not go unnoticed. The old adage is true that it takes a village to raise a child and we are so happy to have caught the members of the Atlantic Community church in Hampton and the Town Of Hampton Employee helping children in their community. Thank you so much to Mrs. Seely, Mrs. MacNeill and Craig Jones for planning the playground work that needed to be done. Thank you also to the Town of Hamptons wonderful willingness to pitch in with their time and town equipment. Without the lending of the equipment by Richard Malone and the hard work of Kevin Breau we wouldnt have been able to finish the project in one day. What a great display of community spirit! A Big Thank you from Hampton Elementary School If you would like to send a Tip of the Hat to acknowledge someone who gives of themselves to their community without recognition or pay, just send us their name, community and a brief description of their acts of kindness. See page two for our contact information. 122

Each year early in November various Branch and Auxiliary members of The Royal Canadian Legion, Peninsula Br. #62 can be seen placing flags on the graves of Veterans in the local cemeteries on the Kingston Peninsula. During last years flag placing Terry Campbell, Branch Sgt-at-Arms, discovered the grave of Civil War Veteran Sam Bramen. After communicating with Steven Bunker, a retired Vietnam Veteran in the US, they provided an American Flag to place on the grave, as they also have the tradition of placing flags on the Veterans graves during this time of year. Mr. Bunker also did some research on Mr. Bramen and discovered that he served in the Rebellion in Company I of the 11th Maine Infantry and in 1864/65 served as a company saddler with Company A of the 2nd Main Cavalry in the Gulf Campaign. If you know of any Veteran, who has been laid to rest in an unmarked grave for more then five years contact your local Last Post Fund Office, as they have some limited funds available under the Special Grave Marker program which allows them to research the Veteran and place a stone if eligible. 409

If you want a thing bad enough to go out and fight for it, to work day and night for it, to give up your time, your peace, and your sleep for it ... if all that you dream and scheme is about it, and life seems useless and worthless without it ... if you gladly sweat for it and fret for it and plan for it and lose all your terror of the opposition for it ... if you simply go after that thing you want with all of your capacity, strength and sagacity, faith, hope, and confidence and stern pertinacity ... if neither cold, poverty, famine, nor gout, sickness nor pain, of body and brain, can keep you away from the thing that you want ... if dogged and grim you beseech and beset it, with the help of God, you WILL get it! ~ Les Brown

The Hampton Community Garden would like to thank every one who helped make this another productive year! This year, we expanded our garden, and now have 84 beds, of which 23 were used this year to grow produce for the Hampton Food Basket. We had a great turnout every time we called for help with the Food Basket harvest. We have installed used metal roofing on the garage, extending its useful life by many years. We have increased our water tank capacity, although a shortage of rain this summer was not a problem ! We would like to thank the many groups who helped out this year, including: HHS - Outdoor Pursuits Class; HHS - Minga Group; HHS - Garden Group; St. Pauls Anglican Church Youth Group. We would also like to thank the following businesses and organizations who made generous donations this year: Atta Boy Garlic; Fundy Solid Waste; Halifax Seed; Hard Rock Drilling; Jamie Moran; Kredls; Transfield Dexter; Town of Hampton; United Way. In particular, we would like to thank the Rector, Wardens, Vestry, and parishioners of St. Pauls Anglican Church, for their vision in sponsoring this project. Without their support, encouragement, and prayers, we would not have enjoyed such abundance of food, community spirit, and outreach. Anyone interested in registering for space for the 2012 season can contact Chris at 832-4660 or Paul at 832-3379, or send an email to HamptonCommunityGarden@gmail.com. 139

COMMuNITy GARDEN uPDATE

There is a special event that occurs in Hampton High every autumn. For each year since 2006, there has been the town-famous Alumni Homecoming Weekend, a great event when all the alumni of HHS return to the school to meet up and gather around to have a good time. During this weekend, the participants are encouraged to take part in the Flag Football Tournament and the dance. However, the creation of this wonderful event was motivated by a tragic news in the community back in 2006. July 1st of 2006, the community of Hampton was struck with the devastating news of the death of Tyler Henderson, a former HHS graduate of 2004, in a tragic car accident. He was well known for his involvement in the school and the community, especially noted for his participation in the Grad Class Executive and the Coffee House organizer. The community was distraught to realize that his influential presence is no longer with them. To commemorate Tylers life, several people gathered to start an event which they named, The Tyler Henderson Memorial. They encouraged HHS alumni to return to the school and participate in activities. The event also contributed to the school fundraiser, especially as part of the three scholarships awarded to Hampton High football players. The Tyler Henderson Memorial has significantly increased in terms of participation, and now awards four scholarships. The event is now called The Huskies Alumni Homecoming Weekend, to signify the overall importance of the event that originated from a great individual in Tyler Henderson. Hampton High would like to thank the following for their involvement in this event: Sherry Rourke, Bridgett Shephard, Andrew Peters, Pat OBrien, Travis Goobie, Meaghan Adams, Violet Brown, and Jinell Allaby. Most of the time former Hampton High School student, Liam Caines, dances with Canadas Royal Winnipeg Ballet. However, on December 3rd & 4th he will be performing in Saint John as the special guest artist featured in Port City Dance Academys remarkably enchanting ballet called The Nutcracker & The Girl With The Shell. This year, the performances of The Nutcracker & The Girl With The Shell, will help to raise awareness and funds for Foundation Glycosylation. Known as The FoG, the foundation was established in Saint John by Dr. Duncan Webster with the support of the Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation, the University of New Brunswick and the Saint John campus of Dalhousie Medical School. The mandate of The FoG is to support further research on CDG (Congenital Disease of Glycosylation). Although CDG is considered rare, research into the disease may benefit other genetic disorders, and an improved understanding of glycosylation pathways and function can have far reaching implications. You can read more about CDG by visiting www. PortCityDanceAcademy.org (NUTCRACKER PAGE) or www. thefog.ca. The Nutcracker & The Girl With The Shell promises to be charming, curious and captivating. The performances will be held on Saturday, December 3rd at 7:00pm and Sunday, December 4th at 2:00pm at Thtre Louis Vermeersch (cole Samuel de Champlain). Tickets are $15 and $10, and charitable tax receipts can be issued for tickets that are donated to local school children and/or families. Donations to The FoG would also be greatly appreciated, and can be made through www.thefog.ca, or through the Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation. 818 The members of the Sussex Art Club will be holding the November meeting at St. Pauls United Church Hall, (4 Morrison, Avenue, Sussex), on Tuesday, November 29th at 7:00pm. Friends of

Since the gardening season is drawing to a close, this will be the last column from me this year. Should the wonderful weather continue there are many important jobs that, when done, will make the commencement of spring a delightfully easy time. Picking up fallen branches has a double blessing of tidying the property and provides the basis for a grand bonfire and may be a hot dog or marshmallow toasting. It is still not too late to plant spring bulbs and a little effort now will reap rewards, not only in the spring but also through the chilly days of winter. William Wordsworth was right on the mark with his poem Daffodils and I feel its worth quoting here: I wanderd lonely as a cloud that floats on high oer vale and hills, When all at once I saw a crowd, a host of golden daffodils; Beside the lake, beneath the trees, fluttering and dancing in the breeze. Continuous as the stars that shine and twinkle on the Milky Way, They stretchd in never ending line along the margin of the bay; Ten thousand saw I at a glance, tossing their heads in sprightly dance. The waves beside them danced, but they out did the sparkling waves with glee: A poet could not but be glad in such a jocund company: I gazed and gazed but little thought what wealth to me the show had brought: For oft, when on my couch I lie in vacant or in pensive mood, They flash upon that inward eye which is the bliss of solitude; And then my heart with pleasure fills and dances with the daffodils. As we bank up our roses and add a little wind protection for the rhododendrons or cut back the perennials removing the spent leaves that are desirable winter homes for the many pests that abound, we would do well to remember the beauty of the blossoms that we have so enjoyed through the growing season. These memories, stored in our minds and hearts will sustain us with happy thoughts as we thumb through the garden books and catalogues in our cozy homes, dreaming of next years bounty, snugly wrapped under winters protective blanket. Have a great winter... enjoy life! 805

Having won the National Communities in Bloom Best Land Reclamation Award for 2011 for our revitalized Town Square, the Hampton Communities in Bloom committee is proud to announce a new initiative to display Hamptons residential past. On Saturday, November 26th from 1:00 to 4:00pm, a limited number of people will have the opportunity to tour four of Hamptons magnificent heritage homes, as well as the historic and quaint Anglican Church of the Ascension on the Lower Norton Shore Road, where refreshments will be served. The homes will be decorated for Christmas, providing an early start to the festive season. Just as the sponsor of the land reclamation award praised Hampton for returning the town square to its former glory, the owners of these magnificent homes have maintained the historical significance and charm of their homes. Tickets for the tour are available at Pharmasave and at Kredls for $15. If that Saturday is stormy, the tour will be on Sunday, November 27th. Guests are encouraged to take slippers or in-house shoes as they will be asked to remove their outdoor footwear at the door of each home. Dont miss this opportunity to tour these four charming homes and celebrate Hamptons history. 137

JOy OF LEARNING
The grand-granddaughter started kindergarten this fall and is loving it. It is amazing how much a five year old can learn in a mere two months! And how eagerly she approaches any and every learning opportunity. Every business or road sign is a reading opportunity, every speed sign a chance to show how well she knows her numbers, and every conversation a chance to add new words to her vocabulary. She is like a giant sponge soaking up words and numbers and concepts. Love of learning is one of the most important gifts we can give our children. So often we see kids hate going to school at a very young age. What a loss. What have we done to stifle that joy in learning and mastering new things? Learning should not be a chore, but an adventure, an opening of new doors to see where they lead and what exciting places they can take us. It is awesome to see little faces light up at realizing they can indeed sound out that word and read that sentence. To feel the energy that flows from those new found abilities. May it continue for the rest of their lives. Parents are the first teachers (even, maybe especially, when they dont realize they are teaching) and so much depends on those first five years spent at home. That is when children gain their fundamental attitudes toward life and learning. But the teachers and learning environment set by their first formal school experiences are so important at setting the tone of their whole educational experience. I loved learning (although not always the educational experience), and seeing my granddaughter thrilled at each new school day is a joy. Thank you to all of the teachers and educators to whom we entrust those little ones each school day. Most of what I really need to know about how to live, what to do, and how to be, I learned in kindergarten. . . . The kindergarten children are confident in spirit, infinite in resources, and eager to learn. Everything is still possible. ~ Robert Fulghum . . . May they always remain so. 801
