Effectiveness of Competency Mapping Introduction Different business organizations, educational institutions, and healthcare settings are adopting different

measurements in their quest for improvement. All of the organization identified the influence of their competitors in their business improvement while on the school and hospitals; they recognized the improvement on the knowledge, skills, and understanding.

Background of the Study and Problem Statement For most of the nurses, the rest of the healthcare providers and healthcare leaders, the improvement is the very common word in the nature of their work. The focus on the competencies of the people is becoming the main strategy of the health care society to facilitate the aid and promotion for health (McAda, 2003). Different approaches are being given to the nurses to improve their skills and knowledge in terms of facilitating the patients. Therefore, as the main issue on the research study, what is the effectiveness of the competency mapping when it is applied in the area of healthcare?

Research Objectives The objectives of the study are divided into three interesting part that are all cantered on healthcare. First is to learn effectiveness of the competency mapping in the nursing profession. Second is to help the institutions to provide strategies in facilitating the competencies among their nurses. And third is to give importance on the competency mapping as being part of the entire system of the nurses training and development. Research Questions The study is guided by the several questions. The questions are viewed as an essential tool to provide the proper approach to the competency mapping.

What are the roles of the nurses in providing healthcare? 2. What are the impacts of competency mapping on healthcare?

3. Hoe does competency mapping improve the quality of health? Literature Review Competency mapping can be done through a comprehensive training programs, skill development, and meeting the target. Because of the rapid changes in the healthcare such as the development of the diseases, changes in the system and so on, the need for the identification of the competencies became the priority of the healthcare leaders. Competency mapping is addressed as a systematic method that is applied in the healthcare settings to determine the core actions and emergency readiness of the
providers, most especially the nurses who are the first attendants for the patients. The effectiveness of the competency mapping reflects everyday in the working procedure of the nurses and can be formulated through the initiative of the nurses to provide the concept on their work (McAda, 2003). The healthcare leaders believe that through the competent nursing care, the people can maintain and enhance the knowledge skills, attitudes, and their judgment in the healthcare procedure. It actually became part of the guideline for the nursing school to improve the curriculum and produce qualified nurses. Therefore, the idea of competency became an essential element of a registered nurse and considered as one aspect to deliver the quality of health (Jitlakoat, 2005; Healthcare Executive, 2006). In this issue, the healthcare executives have an increasing interest in the competency based development. Even the leaders are also part of the continuous renewal
of training

and development. Its effectiveness reflects on the decision making of the leaders and the initiative of the competency is focus on the career aspirations (Healthcare Executive, 2006). Methodology The applied methodology in the study is through the use of the questionnaires. The participants are nurses and patients. The questionnaires are related mostly on the skills of the nurses, their actions in facilitating the medications and treatments, and the outcome of their care. The age, gender, position of the nurses, and status of living of the patients are also indentified for it might take an effect on the analysis of the study. Analysis Based on the provided method, the nurses answered that the use of the competency mapping in their training enhanced their ability in providing care. Most of the nurses agreed
that through the mapping, the nurses recognized the other important factors that might effect on the medication of their patients. On the other hand, there is an inaccurate answer coming from the patient because of the one particular

reason in which most of the participants are irregular patients. However, they believe that there are improvements on how the nurses facilitate their health and their continuous promotion to establish the idea towards health.

Conclusion Competency does not mean expert there exist various levels of competence but each of these has a minimum acceptable level or standard. Beginners are rarely expert, but they can be competent. They perform a wide range of nursing skill and speed in time. Competencies needs result, it also needs strategies.
