Skill Level Extras: Yarn needle, small amount of stuffing for beak, two 1" black buttons for eyes, cardboard for making pompons Gauge: 16 sts and 24 rows = 4" in St st. Use any size needles necessary to obtain the specified gauge. Abbreviations beg beginning; k knit; k1f&b knit 1 in the front and the back of next st to form a 1-stitch increase; k2tog knit 2 stitches together; k3tog knit 3 stitches together; MC main color; mm millimeter; p purl; rem remain(ing); rep repeat; RS right side; st(s) stitch(es); St st Stockinette stitch; tog together; WS wrong side; [ ] rep instructions inside brackets the number of times specified; * repeat instructions after asterisk as specified. Yarn: Deborah Norville Everyday Soft Worsted Prints (100% acrylic/3.5 ounces/180 yards) #ED200-04 Cotton Candy 1 ball (MC) Yarn: Deborah Norville Everyday Soft Worsted Solids (100% acrylic/4 ounces/203 yards) #ED100-06 Baby Pink 1 ball (A) #ED100-01 Snow White 1 ball (B) #ED100-10 Aubergine 1 ball (C) Needles: US 8 (5mm) or size to obtain gauge

HAT With MC, cast on 44 (48, 52) sts and work in k2, p2 rib for 1". Change to St st and work even until piece measures 12 (13, 14)" from beg. Change to k2, p2 and work 1". Bind off all sts rib. Fold hat in half with right sides tog and sew side seams. Weave in ends. Turn hat right side out. POMPON (Make 2) With MC, wrap yarn 60 times around a 2" long piece of cardboard. Tie wraps tog tightly at one end and cut the other. Sew one pompon to each corner of hat. EYE (Make 2) With A, cast on 6 sts. Row 1 (RS): K1f&b in each st across 12 sts. Row 2: Purl. Row 3: * K1, k1f&b; rep from * across 18 sts. Row 4: Purl.

Row 5: Change to B, * k2, k1f&b; rep from * across 24 sts. Row 6: Knit. Row 7: * K3, k1f&b; rep from * across 30 sts. Row 8: Knit. Bind off all sts knitwise. Sew into circle. Sew a button to center of eye and sew eye to hat. BEAK Beg at bottom edge, with C, cast on 3 sts. Row 1 (RS): Knit. Row 2 and all WS rows: Knit. Row 3: K1, k1f&b, k1 4 sts. Row 5: K1, [k1f&b] twice, k1 6 sts. Row 7: K2, [k1f&b] twice, k2 8 sts. Row 9: K3, [k1f&b] twice, k3 10 sts. Row 11: K4, [k1f&b] twice, k4 12 sts. Row 13: K4, [k2tog] twice, k4 10 sts rem. Row 15: K3, [k2tog] twice, k3 8 sts rem. Bind off all sts. Fold bound-off end in half and sew tog for top of beak. Stuff lightly and sew in place to front of hat. WING (Make 2) With A, cast on 12 sts and work in k2, p2 rib for 8 rows. Next Row: [K3tog] 4 times 4 sts rem. Knit 1 row. Break yarn leaving a long tail and draw through rem sts. Sew gathered end in place, then sew one side of wing along side seam of hat. FINISHING Weave in ends.
