visual basic error handling
.

in each procedure that can conceivably produce a run-time error, you should
include an error-handling routine. most run-time errors can be trapped. if you do
not include an error-handler, any run-time error is fatal. visual basic will issue
an error message and terminate the program!

some examples of run-time errors are:

not having a disk in a drive when the program tries to read

a disk is full
out of memory
division by zero
subscript out of range
to write an error-handler, use the on error statement. it can either take the
form:

on error goto myerrorhandler

or

on error resume next

with the first version you must have a label in your procedure called
myerrorhandler:. program control is transferred there if an error occurs. with the
second version, the offending statement is skipped and the next statement is
executed.

scope of error-handlers
the on error statement is only in effect for the duration of the procedure in
which it occurs, or until another on error statement is encountered. on error is
effective for everything that occurs between the on error statement and the exit
sub or exit function statement.

each procedure that needs error handling should have its own on error statement.
you may wish to have the error handler for each routine call a general error-
handling procedure.

identifying errors
when an error occurs, an err object tells you about the error. the properties
err.number and err.description tell you the system error number (a long integer)
and the default description of the error (a string). number is the default
property, so using err is the same as err.number. there is also an error function
that returns a string corresponding to the most recent error (thus it is the same
as err.description). you can also send the error function an error number, and it
will return the string describing that error.

error object and functions

keyword
returns

err.number the number code of the error

err same as err.number
err.description default description of the error
error function returns same as err.description
error 61 returns the string corresponding to error number 61, which is "the disk
is full". put any error number, or variable containing a number, in place of the
61.

the method err.clear clears err.number and err.description to 0 and "". in most
cases it is not necessary, because they are also cleared after exit sub, exit
function, resume, resume next, or another on error.

handling the error

in your error-handling code, you can respond specifically to the error number that
was generated, and then you have the choice of exit sub, resume, or resume next.

after an error occurs

exit sub exits this procedure immediately

resume attempts the offending statement again, presumably after your program has
made corrections or prompted the user to make a correction.
resume next skips the offending statement and resumes at the following line of
code

note that in some cases it is appropriate to allow the user to correct an error
and then issue a resume command. you would pop up a message box informing the user
of the action expected, and after the user responds, resume. this might be
appropriate if a disk is not in the proper drive, or it is full. remember,
however, to give the user a way out! the message box should have two choices, one
leading to resume and the other to exit sub.

in other cases, you should use exit sub for errors that the user must correct. if
the contents of a text box caused an error, for example, you should exit sub so
the user can correct the text.

example 1
this is the simplest form of an error handler. it simply issues the system error
message and exits the procedure. note that an exit sub should appear before the
error-handler label, otherwise your normal code would fall through to the error-
handler code. note also that this example works just as visual basic does on its
own, with one exception: with no error handler, vb would give the same message,
but then terminate the program!

private sub cmdsample1_click()

on error go to sample1error
'... procedure code goes here
exit sub
sample1error:
msgbox error ' sends the error message to a message box
exit sub ' this example just exits the procedure
end sub

example 2
this example makes use of the resume command to allow the user to correct a
problem. we are assuming that this procedure writes something to disk, and that
the disk full message is correctable. note that the message gives the user a no
choice, allowing them to get out of what could be an infinite loop.

private sub cmdsample1_click()

dim reply as integer ' user's reply to error message
on error go to sample2error
'... procedure code goes here
exit sub
sample2error:
if err = 61 then ' 61 means disk is full
reply = msgbox("your disk is full. do you want to try again?", _
vbyesno + vbiconstop, "disk full")
if reply = vbyes then
resume ' retry if user wishes
else
exit sub ' give the user the option to get out
end if
else
msgbox error ' generic error message
exit sub
end if
end sub

example 3
this example uses a general error-handling subroutine. this beats writing the same
code over and over in several different procedures. the generalerror subroutine
can be added under general/declarations, or it can be put in a separate basic
module so you can easily add it to any of your own visual basic projects.

private sub cmdsample3_click()

on error go to sample3error
'... procedure code goes here
exit sub
sample3error:
generalerror err ' call a custom error-handler subroutine
exit sub
end sub

private sub generalerror(errnum as long)

select case errnum
case 61
'... disk full code here...
case 64, 76
'... bad file name/path not found code here...
case 260 to 297
'... dde errors...
case else
msgbox error(errnum) ' use the error function to generate the message
end select
end sub
