Kabay pa. San Vicente Ferrer, Ig-ampo Mo Ako.

Prayer for Young Athletes Heavenly Father, be with my young athletes as they test their physical skills. Let them play well, but fairly.Let competition make them strong, but never hostile. Grant them the strength to best their opponent, and lead them to always help the opponent up. Grant them moments to rejoice, but not in the adversity of others. Help them stay safe from injury, both physical and emotional. Help them to learn something that matters once the game is over. Help them remember that sports are just games. If they know victory, allow them to be happy. If they are denied, keep them from envy. If through athletics, they set an example, let it be a good one. In the name of Your Son, Jesus. Amen.

INVOCATION PRAYER
We recall the book of Proverbs 8:27-31 on how Wisdom plays: When he established the heavens I was there, when he marked out the vault over the face of the deep; when he made firm the skies above, when he fixed fast the foundations of the earth; when he set for the sea its limit, so that the waters should not transgress his command; Then was I beside him as his nursling, and I was his delight day by day, Playing before him all the while, playing on the surface of his earth; and I found delight in the human race. Dear Lord, with our Mayor, Municipal Officials and school heads particularly of this Municipality of Leganes, we are honored and humbled to host this years Second Congressional District Sports Association Meet (CDSA II) on November 6 - 9, 2011. We believe and acknowledge your sovereign presence in this annual sports and cultural event which is participated by eight municipalities. At the same time we are overwhelmed by the expected attendance of 2,000 athletes, coaches, technical staff and school officials In the words of the late John Paul II, I pray: Lord Jesus Christ, help these athletes to be your friends and witnesses to your love. Help them to put the same effort into personal asceticism that they do into sports; help them to achieve a harmonious and cohesive unity of body and soul. May they be sound models to imitate for all who admire them. Help them always to be athletes of the spirit, to win your inestimable prize: an imperishable crown that lasts forever. Amen! Altogether allow us to pray for one another: Please, Lord, bless todays game, our opponent, our team and all watching our play. Thank you for the opportunity to compete and bring out the best in each other. May we play hard and fair. Please keep everyone safe from injury and harm. Remind us that we are called to give our best and to finish the race while caring for others along the way. Amen.

HOMILY ON SPORTS AND CULTURAL EVENTS OF THIS YEARS

SECOND CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT SPORTS ASSOCIATION MEET (CDSA II)
Our honorable Mayor, Enrique Rojas, Members of the Sanggunian Bayan, Our District Supervisor and School Principals, Teaching Staff, Coaches, Our young athletes and cultural contestants, guests and friends. Good Morning! Its a pleasure and honor to be part of the CDSA II events held in the municipality of Leganes with an opening of the Holy Mass with due respect to other Christian brothers and sisters. Let me share my short experience on sports and cultural events. During my high school days, I too participated in baseball, volleyball, basketball as well as singing and declamation contests. It was my experience of building up self-confidence and teamwork. As a young priest, I joined martial arts in Kungfu, later in Aikido, Arnis and then I opted for cycling. Partly I learned self-defense, self-discipline and good physical exercise. I learned from the seminary the famous saying: A sound mind and a sound body. At my age a good exercise is swimming. The late John Paul II who loved the theatre, swimming and skiing said during the Sports Jubilee In Oct. 29, 2000: It is a fitting occasion to give thanks to God for the gift of sport, in which the human person exercises his body, intellect and will, recognizing these abilities as so many gifts of his Creator. Rebecca Dussault, Professional Skier wrote on Pope John Paul II and Sports in April, 2010: One of the greatest symbols of sport is beheld within the Catholic hurch itself and its the late, (Great!) Holy Father John Paul II. Through the many years of his episcopate and papacy he made a lasting impression on the minds and hearts of athletes and sports enthusiasts everywhere as to what is the proper place and function of sports for humankind. The Pope himself loved athletics like they were his breath. He was known to frequently summit mountains, alpine ski, bike, swim, play soccer or volleyball and he even found time to enter an international kayaking competition in 1955 just five years before being ordained a bishop! He was known since the beginning of his papacy as the athlete Pope. Is it possible to be an athlete and a spiritual man? Perhaps we may have heard of the bad side of sports. But we have in our midst a Filipino Champion labeled Pambansang Kamao.Recently, Manny Pacquiao was featured in the Front Cover of Newsweek Magazine by a non-Catholic journalist, Lawrence Osborne:Boxer, Godfather, saint, politician ... Is there anything in the world that Manny cant do? [Oct 30, 2011 10:00 AM EDT] . From department-store ads and peeling lottery booths his half-smile beams down like the face of a mass-reproduced saint. He is Pambansang Kamao, the National Fist. This religious aura is fitting since Pacquiao himself is intensely devout. After successful fights, which is to say all his fights, he returns to the church of the Black Nazarene in Manila neighborhood and prays Ironically, then, it is foolish to fly to Manila to try to meet Manny Pacquiao. As one of his aides mentioned to me, Its like trying to get lunch with Jesus Christ. Following the thoughts of late John Paul II sports has great educational and spiritual potentials towards full development of the individual and to his enjoyment of life. However, every care must be taken to protect the human body from damaging its integrity, from any inhuman exploitation and from any cult to worship it. There must be a willingness to ask forgiveness for whatever has been done, or not done, in the world of sport May this self-examination offer everyone - managers, technicians and athletes - an opportunity to find new creative and motivating zeal, so that sport, without losing its true nature, can answer the needs of our time: sport that protects the weak and excludes no one, that frees young people from the snares of apathy and indifference, and arouses a healthy sense of competition in them; sport that is a factor of emancipation for poorer countries and helps to eradicate intolerance and build a more fraternal and united world; sport which contributes to the love of life, teaches sacrifice, respect and responsibility, leading to the full development of every human person. Once again the Apostle Paul has reminded us of this: Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable (1 Cor 9: 25). Every Christian is called to become a strong athlete of Christ, that is, a faithful and courageous witness to his Gospel. But to succeed in this, he must persevere in prayer, be trained in virtue and follow the divine Master in everything. He, in fact, is Gods true athlete: Christ is the more powerful Man (cf. Mk 1: 7), who for our sake confronted and defeated the opponent, Satan, by the power of the Holy Spirit, thus inaugurating the kingdom of God. He teaches us that, to enter into glory, we must undergo suffering (cf. Lk 24: 26,46); he has gone before us on this path, so that we might follow in his footsteps. Finally, my blessings and prayerful wishes for the success of CDSA II.

REFLECTION ON THE READINGS OF THE 32ND SUNDAY ORDINARY TIME YR. A

REV. FR. GERARDO P. ARROYO, PAROCHIAL VICAR

KATEKISTA BALA KITA TANAN? _______________

Berthlyn Herradura, Catechists Field Coordinator

_________________

Two Sundays from now we will come to the end of the present liturgical year marked by the Feast of Christ the King. The end of every liturgical year signifies the end time -the time to meet Christ Jesus. Thus, the Church has to remind us of this final coming of Jesus. At this time Jesus will come not as the Savior of the world but as its judge. The aim of the Church is not to instill fear in our hearts but to renew our courage. The Church having brought us into the Kingdom of God, taught us how to live in this Kingdom as its faithful citizens should, the Church makes it sure that Jesus will find us worthy to remain within this Kingdom for good. In this final coming of Jesus, the Lord will decide who among us will stay on this Kingdom and those who will be left out of His Kingdom. His judgment will be based on how wise or foolish we are. This explains the reason why during these three Sundays preceding the feast of Christ the King, the Church invites us to recall the coming of Jesus Christ - the great event that will take place for each of us at our death at the end time. In the gospel it is very clear that Jesus is inviting each of us to make sure that the light of the lamp of our faith be brightly burning when He comes at the hour of our death. Jesus came into the world to communicate to us His Fathers loving plan to save us and to give us the light and the strength to live in accordance with that plan. God could have sent us anybody to teach us but there is no better teacher than His son. A good and efficient teacher communicates the truth and shows his students the way that leads to real happiness but anything beyond these there is little that he could do to make his students life successful. Jesus, on the other hand, goes beyond the ordinary. He offered Himself to be the Way that leads us to God, the Truth which fully satisfies and the Life which knows no death. Anybody who follows Jesus will always be on the right way. Anybody who knows Jesus will never remain in the darkness of falsehood. Anybody who is with Jesus possesses Life that knows no death. Along this vein, it is said that those who are truly wise follow Jesus faithfully throughout their lives. To follow Jesus waveringly

and hesitantly is a sheer foolishness as shown in the parable of the bridesmaid. A close scrutiny of the parable found in the gospel reading, we could find so many inconsistencies that do not take place in a normal setting. The banquet rooms door is never closed; no Jewish girl is so foolish enough not to take extra oil for her lamp to last throughout the night. Jesus did this in order to adapt the parable to the meaning he wishes to convey to His listeners. At baptism, each one of us received as Gods gift a lamp brightly lit and well provide with oil. This lamp represents the life in the Spirit and the gift of faith in Christ which ought to light our way through the darkness of this world. Hence, we must keep adding oil which is the true Christian life to our lamp or else it will go out. Many of us neglect to add this oil and went through long periods in his /her life with his/her lamp extinguished. We must keep in mind that wind, storms and earthquakes, as well as other calamities; (our temptations) also threaten the flame of our lamp. As such, we must protect it diligently. Finally, while we are wafting for the coming of Jesus we should not neglect our spiritual life. Once we die, the time to buy oil for our lamp is over. Whenever serious sin extinguishes the light of our lamp we should hasten to light it again. The problem confronting us is the same problem that the early communities were facing that Christ apparently delays His coming unduly. So, we get tired of waiting. This seeming delay of Jesus leads us to think that His coming is still a long way off. Consequently, like the bridesmaids in the parable, a lot of us Christians are taken aback when Jesus comes at our death. We then find ourselves with our lamps extinguished and with no way of lighting them up again. Each one of us, at our death, will be declared as wise or foolish for good. The declaration will be based not on the quantity of books we read nor on the number of dissertations we wrote but on the way did we live our Christian life. We better start now growing truly wise right now!

JMB @ 14, MOVING FORWARD...

The Leganes Youth has been a part and parcel of the St. Vincent Ferrer Parish through the years. There are various youth organizations existing and last September 1997, when Jerusalem Mass started every Sunday at 4:00pm, Jerusalem Mass Barkadahan or JMB was formed. It consists of talented young people from different barangays in Leganes serving in the parish according to their own forte be it in the choir, lector / commentator, altar servers or Wings!. But as time goes by, the youth was brought into a more focused and committed ministry. The social and spiritual participation of the young members were intensified when the JMB continues its journey through the SVF Youth Commission and the current SVF Parish Youth Ministry. Though to this present time, the JMB Youth Choir is the only memento that has remained. But because Things were really different back when we were younger and the members are already going to a more responsible life, JMB has to move on To move forward to the next level and give way to the new generation the SVF Childrens Choir. This is not yet goodbye for us because we are still committed to serve God in other ministries or in other ways. But we would just like to express our gratitude to JMB as the youth group that has facilitated us to become more productive, responsible citizens of our community and has equipped us with the social and spiritual way of living. Thank you also to all those who has been supportive for the 14 years of our existence in SVF Parish. Things may pass, but one thing will remain: the realizations and significant learning we had gained from our experiences because these things would continue to help us in achieving our goals in life with the loving guidance of God. ~Zarah Scarlet Guiloreza-Dormido It has been 14 years now, and Im so proud to be one of the members of JMB. Being a part of the Youth Choir was such a unique and fulfilling experience, to be able to sing with such a diverse group of people and it meant the world to me. Ive always enjoyed participating in music - singing and dancing, because I can express myself freely.. Its only through Jerusalem Mass Barkadahan, that I find myself developed as a better individual. It will be a part of me that I will always cherish. I AM A PROUD JMB MEMBER! ~Cristina Marie Medez Being with JMB for 14 years was a great experience for me. It was indeed a great opportunity for me that I was able to share my God-given talent and at the same time, I had met and gained a lot of friends. To my JMB family, thank you.=) ~Janice Sulit

Nine (9) years of service was indeed a great achievement for me. With JMB, I gained a lot of friends, learned a lot of things to improve on myself and I was able to impart my knowledge & skills. I am very much honored and privileged to be a part of this group. :) We may not be perfect, but we serve a perfect God.JMB rocks!^^ ~Danielle Centeno JMB has been my life for almost my entire teenage experience for 8 years. It is a fulfilling activity to be with other youths in service for our beloved Shrine. I am a part of the Music Ministry for the past 8 years. Through this, I have met musicians that molded me, friends that changed my life and a family that could last a life time. JMB is much more than an organization but a family sharing a common bond to render selfless service and commitment to our mentor and our best friend, Jesus. I hope we could strengthen this bond in years to come. Friends will come and go but my JMB BARKADA will last for a lifetime. Thank you JMB for the ideal service that you taught me. I AM A PROUD JMB FOREVER!!! ~Reste Marion Martizano Being part of the JMB for about 3 years, was a great blessing for me. I was given the privilege and opportunity to meet wonderful people like my Manangs and Manongs, who eventually turned out to be my best buddies. The experience gave me the chance to share my talent and as well give it back to the Lord through my service in the afternoon mass. I will never forget you my Beloved JMB Family. God has better plans for us. I Love JMB! #SOLID JMB. ~Mary Aisa Celiz

ANG BULAN SANG MGA BALAAN NGA MGA KALAG ___________________

Henry Mota, Special Feature

May isa ka dinalan nga nagasiling: Have pity on us, at least you, our friends, because the hand of the Lord has touch us. Look at our distress: Great as the ocean is our misery, Do not delay to help us. For we are helpless and forsaken. Hasten to assist us! For we cannot help ourselves. Hasten, for we suffer unspeakable pains to be separated from the Lord who loves us, Have pity on us, at least you, our friends, because the hand of the Lord has touched us. Give and it shall be given to you. Remember that poor souls are grateful souls: If you help them, they will help you. Those faithful Christians who have died and gone before us but who are still must atone for their sins. The time they spend in Purgatory cleanses them so that they may enter Heaven free from all effects of sin. The Church commemorates all her faithful children who have departed from this life, but have not yet attained the joys of heaven. St. Paul warns us that we must not be ignorant concerning the dead, nor sorrowful, even as others who have no hope... For the Lord Himself shall come down from heaven ... and the dead who are in Christ shall rise. The Church has always taught us to pray for those who have gone into eternity. Even in the Old Testament prayers and alms were offered for the souls of the dead by those who thought well and religiously concerning the resurrection. It was believed that they who had fallen asleep with godliness had great grace laid up for them and that it is therefore a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead, that they may be loosed from sins. We know that a defiled soul cannot enter into heaven. During November the Church especially prays for all who are in the purifying fires of Purgatory, waiting for the day when they will join the company of the saints in heaven. The celebration of Mass is the highest means the Church can provide for charity for the dead, but we can also relieve their sufferings through our prayers, sufferings and penances. We an also help the Poor Souls by doing acts and prayers that have indulgences attached to them. There are many indulgences, applicable only to the souls in Purgatory, which can be obtained during the month of November. It must first be recalled that a Catholic cemetery is a holy place,

being consecrated ground, especially blessed by the Church to receive the bodies, temples of the Holy Ghost, that will rise up to meet Our Lord, the Supreme Judge, on the last day. It is for this reason that it was always considered obligatory for the bodies of faithful Catholics to be buried in Catholic cemeteries (Canon 1205, 1 of the 1917 Code). A visit to a cemetery is consequently an act of religion, as is the special care of the cemetery and of the tombs of those who are buried there. It inspires a Catholic with reverence, awe for Gods judgments, respect for the souls of those whose bodies are buried there, with an awareness of the brevity of this earthly life, and of the union of the Church militant with the Church suffering in the mystical body of Christ. Special graces are consequently attached to silent and prayerful visits to cemeteries. It can easily be understood why Church law prescribes that each parish have its own cemetery (Canon 1208), and why it is the traditional custom for it to be physically adjoining the parish. However, if Catholics love to visit cemeteries, it is especially out of a motive of charity. We long to assist the suffering souls in purgatory by our prayers, sacrifices, and Masses, given that we are united as members of the same mystical body. A physical visit to a cemetery is a great help in inciting us to this duty of charity. It is for this reason that the Church has generously enriched with her indulgences visits to cemeteries. During the eight days from November 1-8, any of the faithful can, simply by visiting a cemetery and praying for the poor souls, obtain a plenary indulgence, applicable to the poor souls in purgatory, under the usual conditions. At other times of the year this is a partial indulgence. Let us consequently be generous and regular with our visits to Catholic cemeteries, and let us never pass one by without stopping to recite a short prayer for the poor souls there, or at least reciting such a prayer as we go by. Ginasiling nga: Prayer for the dead however is one of the greatest acts of charity we can perform, to help them during their time in Purgatory, so that they can enter more quickly into the fullness of heaven. Kabay pa kita nga mga yari pa diri sa duta magbuhat sang debosyon paagi sa pagpangamuyo para sa ila kag samtang aton ginadumdum ang aton mga utod nga nagtaliwan, dumdumon man nila kita suno sa ginasiling: Remember that poor souls are grateful souls: If you help them, they will help you. R. And let perpetual light shine upon them. V. May they rest in peace. R. Amen. V. May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace. R. Amen.

PRAYER OF THE YOUTH ON OCCASION OF

CBCP YEAR OF THE YOUTH ___________________

Almighty Father, God of life and love, You love us. You trust and choose us to participate in Your saving work. Empower us, Your young people, to stand firm in the faith through Your Holy Spirit. May we bring our fellow young people closer to You. Enable all of us: Your young people, together with those ministering to us in the church, in families and in society, to make a decisive response to our universal vocation: to live fully and fruitfully by doing everything in love as we follow Jesus Christ. In communion with the rest of the Church, we pray that this CBCP Year of the Youth become a kairos time for the youth ministry of Your Church and a new springtime for us, Filipino youth: a special period of growing in Your grace through our living in youthful holiness and through our effort to reach out as a Church to those waiting for Your love.
