ORDINARY TIME: NOVEMBER 20TH - SOLEMNITY OF CHRIST THE KING

The Feast of Christ the King was established by Pope Pius XI in 1925 as an antidote to secularism, a way of life which leaves God out of mans thinking and living and organizes his life as if God did not exist. The feast is intended to proclaim in a striking and effective manner Christs royalty over individuals, families, society, governments, and nations. Todays Mass establishes the titles for Christs royalty over men: 1) Christ is God, the Creator of the universe and hence wields a supreme power over all things; All things were created by Him; 2) Christ is our Redeemer, He purchased us by His precious Blood, and made us His property and possession; 3) Christ is Head of the Church, holding in all things the primacy; 4) God bestowed upon Christ the nations of the world as His special possession and dominion. Todays Mass also describes the qualities of Christs kingdom. This kingdom is: 1) supreme, extending not only to all people but also to their princes and kings; 2) universal, extending to all nations and to all places; 3) eternal, for The Lord shall sit a King forever; 4) spiritual, Christs kingdom is not of this world. Rt. Rev. Msgr. Rudolph G. Gandas Christ the King as Represented in the Liturgy The liturgy is an album in which every epoch of Church history immortalizes itself. Therein, accordingly, can be found the various pictures of Christ beloved during succeeding centuries. In its pages we see pictures of Jesus suffering and in agony; we see pictures of His Sacred Heart; yet these pictures are not proper to the nature of the liturgy as such; they resemble baroque altars in a gothic church. Classic liturgy knows but one Christ: the King, radiant, majestic, and divine. With an ever-growing desire, all Advent awaits the coming King; in the chants of the breviary we find repeated again and again the two expressions King and is coming. On Christmas the Church would greet, not the Child of Bethlehem, but the Rex Pacificus the King of peace gloriously reigning. Within a fortnight, there follows a feast which belongs to the greatest of the feasts of the Church year the Epiphany. As in ancient times oriental monarchs visited their principalities (theophany), so the divine King appears in His city, the Church; from its sacred November 20 - 26, 2011 precincts He casts His glance over all the world... On the final feast of the Christmas cycle, the Presentation in the Temple, holy Church meets her royal Bridegroom with virginal love: Adorn your bridal chamber, O Sion, and receive Christ your King! The burden of the Christmas cycle may be summed up in these words: Christ the King establishes His Kingdom of light upon earth! If we now consider the Easter cycle, the luster of Christs royal dignity is indeed somewhat veiled by His sufferings; nevertheless, it is not the suffering Jesus who is present to the eyes of the Church as much as Christ the royal Hero and Warrior who upon the battlefield of Golgotha struggles with the mighty and dies in triumph. Even during Lent and Passiontide the Church acclaims her King. The act of homage on Palm Sunday is intensely stirring; singing psalms in festal procession we accompany our Savior singing: Gloria, laus et honor tibi sit, Rex Christe, Glory, praise and honor be to Thee, Christ, O King! It is true that on Good Friday the Church meditates upon the Man of Sorrows in agony upon the Cross, but at the same time, and perhaps more so, she beholds Him as King upon a royal throne. The hymn Vexilla Regis, The royal banners forward go, is the more perfect expression of the spirit from which the Good Friday liturgy has arisen. Also characteristic is the verse from Psalm 95, Dicite in gentibus quia Dominus regnavit, to which the early Christians always added, a ligno, Proclaim among the Gentiles: the Lord reigns from upon the tree of the Cross! During Paschal time the Church is so occupied with her glorified Savior and Conqueror that kingship references become rarer; nevertheless, toward the end of the season we celebrate our Kings triumph after completing the work of redemption, His royal enthronement on Ascension Thursday. Neither in the time after Pentecost is the picture of Christ as King wholly absent from the liturgy. Corpus Christi is a royal festival: Christ the King who rules the nations, come, let us adore (Invit.). In the Greek Church the feast of the Transfiguration is the principal solemnity in honor of Christs kingship, Summum Regem gloriae Christum adoremus (Invit.). Finally at the sunset of the ecclesiastical year, the Church awaits with burning desire the return of the King of Majesty. We will overlook further considerations in favor of a glance at the daily Offices. How

often do we not begin Matins with an act of royal homage: The King of apostles, of martyrs, of confessors, of virgins come, let us adore (Invit.). Lauds is often introduced with Dominus regnavit, The Lord is King. Christ as King is also a first consideration at the threshold of each day; for morning after morning we renew our oath of fidelity at Prime: To the King of ages be honor and glory. Every oration is concluded through our Mediator Christ Jesus who lives and reigns forever. Yes, age-old liturgy beholds Christ reigning as King in His basilica (etym.: the kings house), upon the altar as His throne. Excerpted from The Churchs Year of Grace, Pius Parsch Things to Do: Traditionally there would be a procession for Christ the King on this feastday. The Blessed Sacrament would be carried and the procession would end with a prayer of consecration to Christ the King and Benediction. Try to participate if your parish has a Christ the King procession. If not, try having one at home (minus the Blessed Sacrament). Read Pope Pius XIs encyclical Quas primas (On the Feast of Christ the King) which shows that secularism is the direct denial of Christs Kingship. Being a relatively newer feast on the Liturgical calendar, there are no traditional foods for this day. Suggested ideas: a wonderful family Sunday dinner, and bake an Easter Cake or King Cake in honor of Christ the King.. A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful, who piously recite the Act of Dedication of the Human Race to Jesus Christ King. A plenary indulgence is granted, if it is recite publicly on the feast of our Lord Jesus Christ King. Commentary on the Readings for the Last Sunday after Pentecost . . .Then will appear the sign of the Son of Man, He will send forth His angels with a trumpet. They will gather His elect from the four winds (Gospel). The world coming to its end! Such an announcement would make all tribes of the earth mourn, especially him who clings to earthly things and now realizes he must not turn back to take his cloak. Let us be realists: the world will dissolve, disappear in ruin! The liturgical year comes to an end today. It is the symbol of the final assumption of Jesus Mystical Body into heaven, the last act in an eternal drama. May we flee from the false christs who lead astray. . .even the elect (Gospel), enslaving, misleading, corrupting their minds, by the press, over the television and the movie screen. REFLECTION ON THE READINGS OF THE SOLEMNITY OF CHRIST THE KING YR. A _________________
REV. FR. GERARDO P. ARROYO, PAROCHIAL VICAR
We are now on the 34th Sunday of the Year in Ordinary Time. This Sunday is considered as the ultimate Sunday in the calendar of the Church. The Solemnity of Christ, the King of the Universe is celebrated on this day which is considered as the continuation of the Ascension of Jesus into heaven. In the Ascension of Christ, we commemorate his glorification as the natural completion of the Resurrection. The Resurrection, on the other hand, is Jesus reward for His faithfulness in fulfilling the task His Father has entrusted to Him. This task is to open the way to salvation for all men. Through Jesus resurrection our way towards salvation was inaugurated. Originally, the kingship of Christ was associated with the Holy Week and Easter. The kingship of Jesus was welcomed by the people during His triumphal entry into the city of Jerusalem. On Easter Sunday it was manifested and confirmed by the Father in raising Him from the dead. Jesus won the victory over sin and death came into possession of His Kingdom by means of His death and resurrection. Pope Pius XI I 1925 instituted a special feast in honor of Christ the King in order to proclaim Jesus as king of all men and of the whole universe. Jesus, however, has chosen not to exercise full reign over this world until He comes in glory at the end time. To emphasize this truth, the Church moved the feast from October to this Sunday which marks the end of the liturgical year. The idea of Christ the King is familiar with us. Yet, Christ is very different from the rest of the earthly kings. These kings have to win their kingdoms in bloody battles. Only the survivor is considered as a victor and king. But most of all, there is one thing all these kings have in common death is the end of their kingship. Jesus, however, is different from them. Jesus did not earned his Kingdom in the blood of a battlefield but through the blood of his cross, as Paul wrote to his Christian converts in Corinth. Christs enemy was sin itself not any of the earthly kings. Through Jesus died in the struggle it was He who was the victor not sin and death. After his victory Jesus has shown that He is the most benevolent towards his subjects. A close look at His kingdom, it is a kingdom of truth and life, a kingdom of holiness and grace, a kingdom of justice, love and peace. His death was not the end of his kingship rather, it was its beginning. A question, however, still remains. If Christ has already won the battle for his kingdom and if his kingdom has so much good to offer people us for our happiness, why is it that many of us still fail to accept Christ as their king? Why is it that the justice, love and peace of his kingdom are not in great evidence in our world? The reason is simple. Sin, despite the victory of Christ, still has power in the world. Let me explain it this way. During World War II, particularly in the Eastern Theater, Japan received major and irreversible setbacks from the hands of the US Armed Force that its arm forces were reduced into shambles; so, it was forced to surrender officially to the United States on Aug. 14, 1945. Although the war was won by the United States, still some fighting continued to rage in some islands of the Pacific because of pocket resistance offered by the enemy. In military, this is called mopping up operations. Christ has fought and won the decisive battle against sin and evil, and we His subjects are in the mopping up period. We long, however, for the day when this struggle will be over and done with so that we will enjoy the love and peace of Gods kingdom. The second coming of Christ will mark the end of this transition period. After this the perfection of the eternal and universal reign of Christ the King will be set in motion. In this feast let us declare our loyalty and devotion to Christ the King. Let us also renew our pledge to persevere in the mopping up operations against sin and evil until the day when Christ will come again in glory to take full possession of his eternal and universal kingdom.

SVF PARISH YOUTH FORMATION 2011 - PART 1

Life is the biggest classroom kag isa sa mga naatubang ko nga assignment amo ang 3-day Youth Formation sang November 11-13, 2011. Huo, sa akon man. Pwede man nga, Pass lang ko anay ah, daw kabudlay gid abi. Pwede pa gid nga, Pulaw naman? Matulog run takon. (Basi magdaku pa ko! :D) Pero tungod ginpili ko batunon ini nga assignment, kinahanglan ko atubangon ang kabudlay kag mga sakripisyo bisan pa ang akon weakness simply because I have faith in Him kag palangga ko ang Parish Youth Ministry (PYM). Im happy this way! Ang mga na-eksperiyensyahan ko, in the middle of our completion of the assignment, nagpa-realisar sang kadamo nga bagay sa akon.

Bal-an man Niya nga ginhatag namon ang amon best para matigayon ini nga Youth Formation. Labaw sa tanan, natun-an namon nga magpalangga, in the sense nga kinahanglan namon magsakripisyo sang amon oras kag iban pa gid tani nga importante nga mga buluhaton. Kon nagasakripisyo man kami, ina tungod kay matuod-tuod kami nga nagapalangga. Sa tanan pa gid nga nangin bahin sining amon kadalag-an, KAMI LUBOS GID NGA NAGAPASALAMAT. ~Diana Rose Esman (Brgy. Cari Minor) & Dannisa Prader (Brgy. Buntatala)

AKO ___________________ KAG ANG AKON ESTORYA

Jomel B. Guintivano, Brgy. Cari Minor

I usually share my experiences as part of the Parish Youth Ministry every time I would encounter dialogues about service. At present, my presence may seem less and less visible, but I make it a point to know what I can share and of course, give the best I can. I feel the longing every time I recall the days when I would be on call for almost any activity in the Parish. My participation would always give me that satisfaction which money can never buy. They say that in life, nothing happens by chance there is no such thing as coincidence. This idea has given the inspiration to bloom where I am planted... not giving up what my heart longs to do - to serve my Parish. I opened myself to any opportunity to learn something new, to relearn something I have forgotten, and to be affirmed of the things with positive feedback. I feel that as a young professional, I can really do something to inspire, to influence, and make people act. Kon indi sila, sin-o? Kag kon indi subong, san-o? These were the questions that dawned on me when I once read a tarpaulin banners on the wall of the Jaro Metropolitan Cathedral. They carried reminders to all Catholic faithful in this Year of the Youth. Technically, I belong to the age bracket of people called youth; that is why, I felt the need to answer the call. With my status now, I felt I can do more than what I could do before. It was one of those unusual Sundays (unsual because nakapakita ako sa mga pamatan-on sa Parokya) when I learned about the planned Youth Formation for the new core group of the Parish Youth Ministry. A desire, long-kept stirred me into excitement. I volunteered saying : O sige, sige, sadya na! Manami ina. Ma-volunteer ko bala magfacilitate sang group dynamics. May nabal-an ako. Bagay gid sa mga youth leaders. Well, I did not get any rejection (May ara gid man bala tani? Wala lang ako kabalo.. hehe). So, I kept my plans with so much excitement to share with the young leaders of the Parish the tricks I have in my fingertips. Hala! May mid-year deliberations pa kami ya gali. Sige lang ah. Kinahanglan madayon gid ko ya. It is for the PYM. So, I texted Manang Zaza and everything was smooth... They were able to adjust the scheduling. We just knew how to bend and to be flexible (Amazing, right?). Modifying some of the exercises from the two-day workshop I have attended, I facilitated the group dynamics for effective communication. Well, I am a communication arts teacher so I felt joy of doing the something I normally do. The activities that were aimed at forming the youth leaders focused on an acronym BJCCAL Body first, Jump in and save, Copy, Create new, Accept the offer, and Listen. All these are important aspects to consider to achieve effective communication that leads to a more active and efficient organization. I feel that the pictures can speak of what the participants felt during the activities. More so, I know that they (the participants) can say a lot about what they have experienced. As for me, I am pleased to have the privilege of having shared of myself and for having facilitated a part of the formation seminar. I have expectations of the youth leaders after what I have shared to them. They know what those expectations are. Still, they must decide as they have the free will to do. The actions depend on them. As for me, it is clear that I have done something and it does not end there. As I think of the questions Kon indi sila, sin-o? Kag kon indi subong, san-o? I feel I am being pushed to journey with the young people. The youth is the future of the church and of course, of the nation. It follows that the quality of the church and of the nation depends on the quality of the youth that are being formed.

VIVA CRISTO REY! LONG ___________________ KING! LIVE CHRIST THE

Henry Mota, Special Feature

Ini ginatawag man nga Christ the King ukon Cristo Rey. How have I faithful to the values and teachings of Christ in my life and in my family? But the best honor and reverence we can give to Christ our King is to make Him King of our lives, families, and communities not only today but throughout the rest of our lives. Hail, Christ our King! November 20 - 26, 2011
