Fiesta Todos Los Santos 20112011 October 30 - November 5,

All Saints Day

All Saints Day (also known as All Hallows Day or Hallowmas) is the day after All Hallows Eve (Halloween). It is a feast day celebrated on 1st November by Anglicans and Roman Catholics. It is an opportunity for believers to remember all saints and martyrs, known and unknown, throughout Christian history. As part of this day of obligation, believers are required to attend church and try not to do any service work. Remembering saints and martyrs and dedicating a specific day to them each year has been a Christian tradition since the 4th century AD, but it wasnt until 609AD that Pope Boniface IV decided to remember all martyrs. Originally 13th May was designated as the Feast of All Holy Martyrs. Later, in 837AD, Pope Gregory IV extended the festival to remember all the saints, changed its name to Feast of All Saints and changed the date to 1st November. We celebrate today the solemnity of All Saints. This invites us to turn our gaze to the immense multitude of those who have already reached the blessed land, and points us on the path that will lead us to that destination. Pope John Paul II, All Saints Day 2003

ARROYO, PAROCHIAL VICAR the vision of God in Heaven (called Beatific vision). Whether we like it or not, it is a fact, it priests, it is also for the whole faithful. Reasoning behind this stems is a reality that titles plays a big role in Why then, do we break faith with one from the notion that when a soul our everyday life, in almost all aspects another, violating the covenant of our of our life and in every human fathers? (Mal1:10b) Jesus, thus, in leaves the body, it is not entirely profession. Take our educational effect, is saying to us that neither cleansed from venial (minor) system. It is very clear that the academe preaching the Gospel nor listening to sins. However, through the encourages this. This is a it suffices to save anyone; for our power of prayer and self-denial, commonplace among our institutions salvation to be achieved, our life has the faithful left on earth may be of higher learning. Ones publications to conform to the Gospel. able to help these souls gain the and the ones quantity of public This is an advice beyond value and Beatific Vision they seek, lectures influence the hastening of valid for anyone who meets preachers bringing the soul eternal sublime ones climb in the ladder of academic whose life is in inconsonant with the position. Thus, an ordinary lecturer Gospel he preaches. Jesus says: Do happiness. can advance to an associate professor A 7/8th century AD prayer The Office of the Dead is read out in churches on All Souls Day. Other rituals include the offering of Requiem Mass for the dead, visiting family graves and reflecting on lost loved ones. In Mexico, on el dia de los muertos (Day of the Dead), people take picnics to their family graves and leave food out for their dead relatives. Whilst praying for the dead is an ancient Christian tradition, it was Odilo, Abbot of Cluny (France) who, in 998AD, designated a specific day for remembering and praying for those in the process of purification. This started as a local feast in his monasteries and gradually spread throughout the Catholic Church towards the end of the 10th century AD.
then to the position of an assistant professor and then to the position of full professorship. We may articulate that nothing is wrong with this practice. This is just natural. Thus, it is just right and fitting for those who work hard advance more steadily that those who work in a lackluster manner. Those worked more should be rewarded for their hard work. What makes this reality problematic and bad is when the concerned player gives more emphasis to the status and to his position in society setting aside the role of the spiritual in his life. To be the number one tops ones list of priorities. Consequently, the necessity to develop a deeper personal relationship with God is thrown into oblivion. The Pharisees are the people of this kind. Many of them are rich and occupy the highest stratum of the society. As such, they are well-educated. In short, they are the haves people. These, however, has led them to be proud. They looked down on the rest of the members of the Jewish society with contempt. They feel that they are several notches higher and better than the have nots people- the uneducated, the poor and the sinners. This moved Jesus to criticize them intensely. There is no correspondence between what they know and what they practice. and observe all things whatsoever they tells you, but do not follow their example. (Mt23:3) What really matters is the Word of God and not the preacher who conveys the Word. It is like the uncontaminated drinking water that quench our thirst that we drink from fountain that matters most and not the pipe, either it be made of bamboo, iron, bronze or gold, that conveys the water to our kitchen. As for the titles such as Fathers and Teachers the Jesus wants to emphasize is not too much in forbidding the use of these titles of respects. His stress lies more on the saving his disciples from the sin of pride that fills the hearts the Pharisees. These people claimed as their rights to be called Abbi (my father), Rabbi (my teacher) and Mari (my master). Jesus wants to make it clear that only God and he alone have the rightful claim to such titles. No other man is better than Jesus who could measure the terrible havoc that pride causes in our hearts ourselves for it absolutely blocks our way to salvation. We have no reason to exalt for all that we have has been given to us on loan. But if man humbles himself before God and acknowledges and rejoices his dependence on Him, God will exalt him. Jesus then is the perfect archetype of humility. He is the only person who can claim in all sincerity: I am meek and humble of heart. (Mt11:29)

For the souls in purgatory, waiting for eternal happiness and for meeting the Beloved is a source of suffering, because of the punishment due to sin which separates them from God. But there is also the certitude that once the time of purification is over, the souls will go to meet the If we say that the biblical texts are meant alone for the unfaithful priests One it desires. How about us? Can we join Jesus in their calling, then we are wrong. Letter of Pope John Paul II Examining these texts carefully, Gods truthfully claiming the meaning of for Millennium of All Souls rebuke is not directed only on the these words? TO GOD BE THE GLORY ___________________

Gina Misoles, CPA, SERVANT OF GOD

I have done my best in the race. I have run the full distance and I have kept my faith. And now theres waiting for me, the victory prize being put right with God, which the Lord, the righteous judge will judge me on that day and not only to me but to all those who want with love for him to appear. 2Timothy 4:7-8 April 18, 2011 marked the beginning of my sixmonth journey in Iloilo towards achieving my dream of becoming a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). Along with my baggage, I carry within me the burning desire of becoming a CPA this October 2011. I have no enough riches / financial resources for my six-month stay, yet I know in my heart that God will take care of me and will never leave me nor forsake me. True, indeed, He is the God of mercy. He never failed to provide all my needs even if I do not ask them in prayers. God had sent countless instruments to help me in my needs - my family, my extended families (DXCP / KKC Family, SMI Family, NDDU Family, Dideles Family, Reyes Family, Burao Family), my co-reviewees especially my co-Iloilo girls, our reviewers (Atty. Rosada, Sir Art and Sir Chen), my boardmates, my co-volunteer catechists, the people in Sitio Irrigasyon Cagamutan Norte, the VSA-IRS staff, Msgr. Jesus Enojo and all the people in Leganes, Iloilo. I realized that I have nothing to prove to someone, I just have to prove to myself that I can achieve my dream if I just believe in myself and in the power of God. This is for me, for my family and most especially for the greater glory of God. When God wants to educate a man, He does not send him to the school of graces, but to the school of necessities. In the lives of the students, we often encounter stories of difficult

moments, sleepless nights, wounded feelings, bulky requirements, stressful homework, bundles of workloads, thousands and even millions of computations and the like. Despite all the odds, we just have to stand tall and say AAL IZZ WEL! In my personal experience, academic life is very challenging, yet very colorful. Each day is a struggle for me especially that I am an academic scholar. I always put pressure to myself, knowing that if I lose the scholarship, I would not be able to graduate on time. I remember the times after I take every challenging departmental exams, I would immediately go to my boarding house... crying and so much worried of the results. I would even deprive myself from enjoying unless the results are already published and my grades still qualify for the scholarship. Aside from maintaining my scholarship, I had to spend time for part-time job. I had been a baby sitter, a convent assistant and an assistant to the Finance Officer of an organization. Sometimes, I would question God why do I have to get a part time job in order to support my daily expenses and school requirements, while some are enjoying their college life freely as they could? There even came a point in my life where I felt like quitting, especially when things are starting to hurt me. I wanted to leave where it is, before the pain gets worse. But once I remember how much I have prayed, how much I really wanted it and why I have fought for it in the first place, hope comes back into my heart, and thats why... I have come this far. I believe that each of us has our own stories of perseverance at various levels. After all those challenges, why were we able to overcome those, while thousands were overwhelmed by theirs? Its simply because of our ATTITUDE towards those circumstances and that we refused to hold on to the common excuses of failure. I turned the stumbling blocks into

stepping stones, realizing that I could not determine every circumstance in life, but I could determine the CHOICE OF ATTITUDE towards every circumstance. As a result, I graduated Magna Cum Laude and surprisingly a recipient of St. Marcellin Champagnat and Community Service awards, which I consider a bonus gift from God. Because of this, I was given full tuition fee discount for my review at Visayas School of Accountancy Iloilo Review School. Aside from the review, I thank God for giving me the chance to share my time and Gods word to the people in Sitio Irrigasyon through the Mayflower Catechesis, as well as increase my faith in God through series of fellowship with boardmates and coreviewees. After six months of preparation, by Gods grace, I was able to pass the October 2011 CPA Board Exam. I succeed because we chose the right attitude towards every circumstance. Most especially, I succeed because of the Divine Intervention and overwhelming guidance by our ALMIGHTY. He has been and will always be my calculator, who ADDS comfort in times of hardships; SUBTRACTS fears; DIVIDES blessings; and MULTIPLIES joy! =) May this sharing be an inspiration to all especially to every student to take responsibility for learning, to study smart, to value education, to share time, talents and treasures and to choose the right attitude towards every circumstance. As we continue our journey, let us keep the faith and focus, let us persevere, and keep the desires of reaching our dreams burning. Most especially, let us all continue our journey with simplicity, humility, modesty, peace, love, undying faith and happiness. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the people in Leganes for being part of my wonderful stay here in Iloilo. As I go back to Mindanao, I will carry with me all the wonderful moments and experiences with all of you.

Ini ang ginasiling sang Simbahan sa sining selebrasyon: In keeping with the call of our Lord to be in solidarity with our incarcerated brothers and sisters (Mt. 25:35-36), we invite you to share with us the joys and hopes of a holistic rehabilitation that goes beyond punishment for the offender. Once every year, we make it a point to remind all our people to remember our brothers and sisters who languish in our prisons and jails. It is quite easy to forget them as fellow member s of the human society. After all, to our minds they are derelicts now suffering from their sins or offenses against society and our laws have seen to it that they pay their transgressions. Prison Awareness Sunday celebration also reminds us that the main goal of the imprisonment should not be avenge or punish, but rather to reform an erring members of the society. Not punishment with harshness and brutality or apathy but reformation by making an offender realize his faults with mercy and compassion make amends and correct any injustice. In addition, let us urge our faithful to consider prisons and jails not as places for punishment but as sites for the rehabilitation and restoration of broken relationships. Ang Simbahan nagasiling pa gid: Every year we celebrate Prison Awareness Sunday to remind us that our brothers and sisters who are behind bars are included in the Kingdom of God. The prisoners are people we often forget and perhaps we do not think about. But they are still our brothers and sisters who like everybody else Jesus wants us to understand and accept. Jesus wants us to help them see their mistakes and be sorry for them and to right the wrong that they have done. He wants us to be bearers of Hope and Love. Todays reading reminds us that God is our Father and that One God created all of us. The best example of this is: Once when Pope John Paul II visited the prisoners of a jail in Rome, one inmate approached him, and with bowed head, confided his offense. He said, Will I ever be forgiven by God? Without saying any word, the Pope embraced him. That said it all. God never gives up on the worst of sinners and criminals. Today is Prison Awareness Sunday. This annual event designated by the Church serves to focus our attention on convicts who are serving terms in jail, paying for their crimes. Likewise, we remember the wardens, guards, and other jail management personnel in their difficult, lonely, and dangerous work.
