25th annual Lights of Love campaign under way
CARSON CITY The holiday is rapid-
ly approaching, leading to the Carson City
Hospital Auxiliarys (CCHA) 25th annual
Lights of Love campaign.
Lights of Love offers a wonderful way
to remember special people who have
passed away and to honor those who
touch our lives every day. Through dona-
tion, the name of each person honored will
be placed on a keepsake ornament and
displayed throughout the holiday season.
The special holiday ornament is our gift to
you. Donation amounts begin at $10.
Lights of Love truly holds a special
place in my heart. This is a fundraiser
and event that our entire hospital com-
munity looks forward to every year, said
Marie Lynn Watts, a Carson City Hos-
pital employee and President of CCHA.
Watts added, All donations to auxiliary
fundraisers are given directly back to the
hospital to help fund various projects and
fulll patient needs. Contributions from
previous Lights of Love campaigns total
more than $60,000.
The culminating event in the Lights
of Love project is the popular family-
oriented Christmas with the Auxiliary,
which will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday,
Dec. 15, in the hospital main lobby. This
has always been a great event with many
holiday activities to offer to all ages along
with our dedication service. A new addi-
tion to Christmas with the Auxiliary will
be a release of lit lanterns in recognition
of cancer patients, survivors and victims.
For information on purchasing a lantern,
please contact Marcie Martin at (989)
584-3971, ext. 239.
If you are interested in recognizing
someone special, donation envelopes
are available at the surrounding Carson
Health Network clinics and at the hospi-
tal. If you have any questions regarding
Lights of Love or CCHA, contact Marie
Lynn Watts at (989) 584-3971, ext. 163.
Donations are also accepted by mail at
Attn: Lights of Love, 406 E. Elm St., Car-
son City, MI 48811.

pital, visit www.CarsonCityHospital.com

When my son Noah Smith of
Kent City, returned from a tour of
duty in Iraq with the U.S. Army in
the summer of 2010, I asked him
what kind of hunt would he be in-
terested in.
Id like to ride horses and hunt
in the mountains, he said.
Well, an elk hunt out west was
in order. We attended the Huntin
Time Expo at the Delta Plex in
Grand Rapids in January 2011 with
the intention of having an elk hunt
booked before we left that night.
After talking with about 20
elk outtters we settled on Back-
country Outtters out of Pagosa
Springs, Colo.
As it turned out a very good
choice. We liked the idea that they
owned all there own horses and
mules and we would be packing in
about eight miles to a tent camp
and hunting everyday starting
with a horseback ride further into
the mountains.
On Nov. 4, after a 1,650 mile
road trip to Colorado with our
friend Brian Braun of Ann Arbor,
we packed in on horseback to our
tent camp for the week.
The second day of the hunt,
Nov. 6, Noah and I rode out about
three miles from camp and spotted
elk on the far side of a huge valley.
Jumping off the horses we pulled
our guns out of the scabbards.
Noah was about to take this trophy
6X6 and 20 seconds later I took a
5X5 elk.
Our guide, Monty, stated later
that in all the years he has been
guiding he never had a father-son
team shoot two elk standing next
to each other in a span of 20 sec-
onds.
If you would like to see Noahs
elk, I think we will have it on dis-
play at the Backcountry Outtters
booth this January at the Huntin
Time Expo in Grand Rapids.

WHITE CLOUD Stage
Door Players have announced a
Christmas Story Time, a story
telling night at the Stage Door
Players Theatre Dec. 10 at 7
p.m.
Everyone has a favorite
holiday story, said Ken Busch,
Stage Door Players president.
The idea behind this event is
modeled after the currently pop-
ular Story Slams being held
in theaters around the country.
Interested amateurs, story tell-
ers, theater people and everyone
that loves stories are encouraged
to attend.
The concept is timeless and
simple, continued Busch, ev-
eryone in the audience is invited
to share a personal holiday story
from their lives. If you have a
story you want to share, you reg-
ister your name and the name
goes into a bucket.
A minimum of 10 names will
then be drawn. And each name
drawn will have ve minutes
with a one minute grace period
to tell their story. Three judges
will be in attendance to listen to
how well the story is told, how
well it is constructed and how
well the story explores or con-
nects or even reveals some truth
about the holiday theme. The 2
highest scoring story tellers will
each be rewarded a prize of $50
and an opportunity to head-line
the next story telling event.
It is really an opportunity
to witness or become a partici-
pant of a seemingly lost art, that
of effective story telling, Busch
said.
Participants will need to
register at 6:30 p.m. prior to
the event to be entered into the
nights itinerary.
Remember, the audience is
expecting real-life holiday sto-
ries, he added. Story tellers
need to provide real stories that
have a beginning and middle and
an end. You are clear as to why
the story is important to you and
why you want to tell it.
Retelling any folktale, myth
or fable is not encouraged in this
context.
Funny is good, sad is real
but all must be genuinely in ser-
vice to the story. That is what
makes your story worth listen-
ing to and sets it apart, Busch
added. Interspersed between
story telling will be holiday mu-
sic and holiday snacks. It will
be a very unique and I think in-
spiring evening of holiday enter-
tainment.
Event rules and registration
will be available at 6:30 p.m.;
Saturday, Dec. 10 at the Stage
Door Players Theatre, 1147 East
Wilcox, White Cloud, MI.
Tickets for the event will be
$5 and available one hour before
the show at the Stage Door Play-
ers box ofce.

COMMUNITY NEWS LETTER TO
THE EDITOR
Compassion in our community?
Last Friday on Northland Drive on my way back from work
around 3pm, just upon entering Howard City I noticed a cat in
the middle of my lane. It had been hit and I noticed movement,
I quickly pulled over, only to see the person behind me drive
right over the poor baby. I was horried and started waving my
arms to direct trafc away so I could pick the cat up. Why I
wonder, did the person not stop who hit this young cat?? Ani-
mals are like little children, they are helpless and depend on us
to help them. I rushed that beautiful cat to Dr. Lepleys ofce,
who I have taken my animals to for many years. I prayed please
let him still be there, for he closes at noon on Fridays. Some-
body above cares because he was there and took the cat, gave
her a shot for shock, etc...
Our community should be honored to have such a lov-
ing and caring vet as Dr. Lepley in our town. I hope and wish
the people could nd it in their hearts to be more caring and
compassionate. A small gesture of kindness goes further than
youll ever know! I prayed that young cat would make it, Dr.
Lepley gives his all in saving precious furry family members.
If we could all follow in those footsteps and do the right thing.
Unfortunately, I am deeply sorry to say she did not make it,
but it was not for the lack of trying. Please accept my deep-
est condolences if you owned a Siamese colored baby with the
most beautiful sky blue eyes Ive ever seen. We tried our best,
please know she was given the utmost care and love in trying.
I apologize for giving you notication through this editorial. I
know losing a family member is never easy, may it comfort you
knowing she was loved and cared for by people who cared.
If you see Dr. Lepley please thank him for all he gives to us
and our furry four legged kids, and for always going above and
beyond. Thank You, Dr. Lepley! Its an honor to have you and
your staff in our community.

YOUNG PATRIOTS
BY DENNIS STEWART
On behalf of the Veterans of Foreign
Wars, and all of the other military veterans
in our area, I would like to thank the young
Americans at MacNaughton Elementary for
the fantastic tribute to veterans which they
presented to my VFW post for Veterans
Day, 2011.
The project, with the blessing of Tri-
County Schools Administration, was or-
ganized by kindergarten teacher Mary
Overbeek. To honor veterans, each of the
children at the school from kindergarten,
rst and second grades constructed ban-
ners and letters giving thanks to veterans
everywhere for the freedoms we all enjoy.
The banners and letters were on display
at the post from Veterans Day until Novem-
ber 28. For those who missed some amaz-
ing artwork by our youngest of patriots,
there will be another opportunity for view-
ing during the holidays at the MacNaugh-
ton Elementary gym. Be sure to stop in!
A cleaner
toothbrush may
mean fewer
colds
NORTH AMERICAN PRECIS SYNDICATE
Brushing up on your knowledge of
germs and virusesparticularly when it
comes to your toothbrushmay mean
fewer colds for you and your family.
Often, a toothbrush is put away
damp after its been used. Unfortu-
nately, that can be just the kind of en-
vironment germs and bacteria like to
inhabit.
One way to correct this may be to
use a toothbrush sanitizer that can neu-
tralize bacteria already on your brush,
and protect it from collecting more
E.coli and other pathogens.
For example, a sanitizer called
Steripod is designed to kill microbes by
wrapping the toothbrush in an invis-
ible vapor shield of naturally antiseptic
Thymol. Simply clip it on your electric
or manual toothbrush and it goes to
work.
This nontoxic botanical ingredient is
derived from the thyme plant, a mem-
ber of the mint family. With no cords,
plugs or batteries, the shield packs ef-
fortlessly.

NORTH AMERICAN PREIC SYNDICATE
From a very young age, we are taught
to follow the doctors orders. Doctors
can help guide us to the best way to take
care of ourselves. But a recent survey sug-
gests that many people may be ignoring
this age-old advice.
The new survey showed that three
out of four Americans do not always take
their prescription medicine as directed by
their doctor. Nearly half of those polled
said they do not stay on their medicine.
For some people, its simply a case of for-
getting to take it. Other people say they
just stopped taking it before the supply
ran out, took less than the recommended
amount or didnt go to the pharmacy at all
to ll the prescription in the rst place.
This trend could be a problem for the
millions of people facing chronic diseases,
including the nearly 44 million Americans
age 50 or older who are threatened by os-
teoporosis, including postmenopausal os-
teoporosis. Osteoporosis is a disease that
causes bones to become brittle and more
likely to break.
People need to remember that medi-
cations do not work if we dont take them
as prescribed, said Barbara Dehn, nurse
practitioner at the Women Physicians
Ob/Gyn Medical Group, Mt. View, Cali-
fornia. For women with postmenopausal
osteoporosis, this is very important be-
cause prescription medicine can help
make bones stronger and may reduce the
chance of a fracture.
Women age 50 or older who dont
treat osteoporosis can lose bone mass.
This means that their bones get thinner
and they are more likely to experience a
fracture. Up to one in two women age 50
or older with untreated osteoporosis may
experience a bone fracture.
If you have been diagnosed with os-
teoporosis, then talk to your doctor about
treatment options such as once-monthly
Boniva. This is a prescription medicine
used to treat and help prevent osteopo-
rosis in women after menopause. Boniva
helps increase bone mass and helps re-
duce the chance of having a spinal frac-
ture [break]. It is not known how long
Boniva works for the treatment and pre-
vention of osteoporosis and you should
see your doctor regularly to determine if
Boniva is still right for you, Dehn said.
Remember to take your medication as
your doctor prescribed so your treatment
has the best chance at helping to prevent
bone loss.
Here are some helpful tips to help you
stay on track with your bone health treat-
ment plan:
Tip 1: Ask your doctor about your med-
icine: It is important to understand how
to take your medication properly. Pre-
pare questions to ask your doctor about
your medicationsuch as when you need
to take it, how often or if you should eat
beforehandand how it might affect you.
Tip 2: Find out about free programs
that provide support: Ask your doctor
for tools such as brochures and videos
that can help you learn more about post-
menopausal osteoporosis and treatment.
Programs like MyBONIVA can also help
you make the most of your prescription
treatment plan. The program includes a
welcome kit, quarterly newsletters with
helpful tips on leading a healthy and ac-
tive life, and monthly e-mail reminders to
help you remember to take your medica-
tion. Visit www.MyBoniva.com for more
information.
Tip 3: Make a standing date on your
treatment day: Make a special appoint-
ment with a close friend or organize a
different fun activity for each day that you
have to take your prescription treatment.
Involving a friend or family member in
your routine can help remind you to stick
to it.
Tip 4: Create a plan that works for
you: You can use a combination of any or
all of these tips to help you stick with your
treatment plan. You should see your doc-
tor regularly to determine if Boniva is still

Warts, Moles, Skin Tags and Crab Grass
Many years ago, during my rst week as a PA, a worried mom brought in her four year old son with about 40 warts on his hands and
feet. My training was to burn or freeze a wart to remove it. I knew this child would never let me do that 40 times. So I asked my mentor,
Dr Bennett, what he would do. Oh, let me take care of that, he said. He then asked the boy, Can I buy your warts for a penny each?
Sure, smiled the boy. Then one at a time, Doc pressed a penny on each wart and said, OK, here is your penny and I will take your wart.
I rolled my eyes, thinking, OMG, I am working for a quack.
Well, three weeks later I was astounded to see that the warts were gone. So how does that work? I asked Doc. Dont really know,
but it only works up to about age ve, after that the child will not believe you. Somehow the immune system got turned on by the childs
belief and eliminated the virus that caused the warts. Today in natural health we use three homeopathic remedies: Thuja, Causticum, or
Antimonium Cruda. These remedies, taken one pellet once per day in 12C to 30C potencies will remove warts over 90% of the time. Start
with Thuja. If no help, try the other two, one at a time. If that does not work see a dermatologist for tradition burning and freezing.
Moles (also called Nevi) are the pigmented brown spots that are found on most of us. Generally they are not a worry. However, see
your Dr. to get your moles checked for Melanoma if you notice any of these things: A. Asymmetry- They change shape and become
irregular instead of round, B. Border-Edges become fuzzy or blurred, C. Color- They change to a very black color or they develop a white
halo around them, D. Diameter-They grow bigger than a pencil eraser (1/4 inch), E. Elevated-They become raised, F. Firm-They are rm,
not abby or crusty, G. Growing- They change rapidly, H. Heal poorly-They may ulcerate, bleed, and not heal properly. Any open sore
that does not heal in 10-14 days could be skin cancer and should be evaluated by your doctor.
The red, raised moles that some people have are called, Cherry Angiomas. They are sometimes associated with liver problems. Many
times these will disappear after taking a Liver Cleanse(herbal combination that improves liver function) every three to six months.
Skin Tags are the abby bits of esh colored skin that many people have around their neck, armpits, and abdominal areas. They are
common in areas where skin rubs against skin. They begin as plugged oil glands which form a small cyst. The
oil plug breaks down and disappears but the skin continues to mushroom out into this eshy tab of skin. You
can just clip the small ones off. Soak a small sharp scissor or a new nail clipper in peroxide or betadine. Then
carefully clip off the tag. Sometimes they bleed a little, but direct pressure will quickly stop that. Take no Aspirin,
Motrin, Alieve, or arthritis meds for three days before cutting the skin tag, because those medications could
increase bleeding. You should see your doctor to remove the big ones. I once remove a giant skin tag from a
mans armpit. It measured over ve inches. Hed had it for 30 years.
Finally, the Crab Grass (term borrowed from Pastor Truman Raak) refers to the crusty growths that occur
on sun damaged skin of the body. Dr. Bennett called them rust spots on a chrome bumper. Ofcially they are
Seborrheic Keratosis. They are made of abnormal skin oil and cells that do not shed off properly. As the crusts
age, the oil can oxidize, turning black. Sometimes they are confused with Melanomas and often we will biopsy
them. If you saturate them with baby oil or olive oil for a few days, you can just scrap them off. They will return
but are temporarily gone. Adding an Omega 3 oil (2-4000 mg per day) and olive oil (2 tbsp. per day) to your
diet, and taking an herbal Liver Cleanse (every 3-6 months) can help x this problem.

In Michigan in 2010 there were 55,867
reported car-deer crashes with 11 mo-
torists killed and 1,277 injured. About
80 percent of all car-deer crashes take
place on two-lane roads between dusk
and dawn. (Of the reported car-deer
accidents Kent County is number one
and Montcalm County is number six in
the states highest accident rate).
What can you do?
Stay aware, awake, alert, and sober.
Remember, safety belts are your best
defense in any collision.
Be alert for deer in spring and fall,
especially at dawn and dusk.
Heed deer crossing and speed limit
signs, particularly on two-lane roads.
If a crash is unavoidable:
Dont swerve!
Brake rmly
Hold on to the steering wheel.
Stay in your lane.
Bring your vehicle to a controlled stop.
We at Hills Body Shop have noticed an increase in deer hits in the month of October through December
and a big surge directly after the end of Daylight Savings, because more people are still on the road at
sunset.
If you have had the misfortune of hitting a deer, Hills Body Shop, Inc. is here to help restore your ve-
hicle to its pre-accident condition. Your insurance company may refer you to one of their preferred
repair facilities. These body shops have an agreement with your insurance company to keep down the
cost of your vehicle repair in exchange for referrals. We believe its not in your best interest to take
your vehicle to these contracted repair shops. We believe safety and quality should come before cost,
whereas these preferred shops seem to put cost before quality and safety. We believe it to be unethi-
cal to cheapen your vehicle repair to save your insurance company money. Youre our customer, not
your insurance companys. Hills Body Shop, Inc. has always and will always provide the nest repairs
available.
For more information about what you can do to avoid a car-deer accident and what to do if you do have
a car-deer accident, please visit our website http://www.hillsbodyshop.com/

The CIT. CIT stands for corporate income tax. The
business tax system in place through the end of 2011
gets restructured January 1, 2012 with the CIT. On
that day Michigan businesses which have elected
to be C corporations will be subject to the CIT if
they have a physical presence in Michigan, or they
actively solicit sales here to the tune of $350,000.
And any C corporation owning or receiving a
benet from any other ow-through entity via ties to
Michigan will be hit with the CIT as well. Michigan
will tax the income of C corporations in business
here, or reaping prots from Michigans citizenry.
You sell your product here, you pay your tax here.
The CIT rate is 6%. Michigan had been one of the
last three states in the country to not tax corporate
income. Even now, the new 6% Michigan CI tax
is substantially less than those of our neighboring
states, whose rates are upwards to almost 10%.
The CIT does not tax out-of-state earnings. C
corporations will have to keep records of where
they make their money. Based strictly on sales,
C corporations doing some but not all business in
Michigan, will pay corporate income tax here on
their apportioned gross income of at least $350,000.
And certain C corporations having a common
owner will be taxed based on their combined gross
sales whether or not all of the commonly owned
corporations have sales in Michigan. Generally,
a 6% rate will apply to all C corporations except
insurance companies, which will be subject to a 1.25
percent tax on gross direct premiums written on
Michigan property or risk in Michigan. And nan-
cial institutions will pay only .29 percent of their net
capital allocated to Michigan.
In with the 6% Corporate Income Tax, out with
the Michigan Business Tax. Come January 1, the
former tax on corporations, the Michigan Business
Tax or MBT, will no longer be levied equally on
corporations paying the CIT. Of course the CIT was
popular among corporations at voting time because
they will pay nowhere near what they paid under the
Michigan Business Tax. Those corporate savings
are meant to generate more jobs, so Michigan should
win if the Gov was right there. And, supposedly, that
lost tax revenue to the State will be made up when
income taxes are levied on previously income-tax-
exempt government retirees and union employees
pension withdrawals all the little guys will cover
it.
Seems to me Michigan might have been better off
had we lowered the old tax levied on corporations
only somewhat, levied an income tax on only some
highly-paid government and union managers pen-
sions, and voted in a tax on the incomes, estate hold-
ings, and assets of Michigans wealthy. Michigan has
no shortage of wealthy. They, among the top 10%
who earn or own the top 80-90% (depending on who
you read) of wealth in America, dont get pinched
by this new tax policy. Still, the CIT plan is to help
free up money for companies to grow with.
Small businesses benet. The old Michigan Busi-
ness Tax gave a credit called the small business
alternative tax credit. That credit will remain avail-
able to certain qualied small businesses. The result
will lower their tax obligation to 1.8 percent, instead
of 6%, on their adjusted income- a great savings.
Whats a small business? A C corporation with
sales between $1 and $20 million, adjusted (after
deducting expenses) income of $1.3 million or less,
and having no ofcers or owners earning more than
$180,000. Thats most corporations hereabouts
and a lot of money saved. So if you own or work
for a C corporation, do the math. And come January
1, help Michigan - put someone to work with your
new savings.

Reclaim Your Garage
In A Weekend
(NAPSI) Is
your garage
dingy, cluttered
and in need of a
facelift? Trans-
forming it into
a showroom
for your car or
reclaiming it
for a workshop,
playroom or man cave isnt difcult. All it takes is
a weekend and a little elbow grease.
Many homeowners view the garage as an exten-
sion of the homenot just a place to store the
lawn mower, says Rust-Oleum brand manager
Mark Wilgen. A clean, well-organized garage can
provide extra living space, as well as add value to
a home. And reclaiming it can be a fun weekend
project that families can do together.
Heres how to get started:
Get rid of the clutter. Remove outdoor furni-
ture, sports equipment, lawn mowers and garage
clutter. Bag the trash, donate too-small bikes and
other items you no longer need and decide what
will go back in the garage after your work is done.
If youre like most homeowners, youll gain a lot
of space by clearing away the clutter.
Paint the walls. Most homeowners dont think
about painting the walls of their garage. Yet a coat
of ordinary latex paint can go a long way in bright-
ening the space and giving it a nished look. If
the garage has never been paintedor its been
painted with porous builders at paintmake
sure you prime rst with a quality primer. It will
seal the surface for a better paint job and youll
use less paint.
Dont forget the oor. Sweep it clean. Then
remove dirt, oil or grease spots using a cleaner/
degreaser and a stiff bristle brush and rinse thor-
oughly. To give your garage a showroom-quality
oor that will make you the talk of your neigh-
borhood, nish it with a coating specically for-
mulated for garage oors. It will protect the oor
against gasoline, antifreeze, motor oil, salt and hot
tire pickup and makes it simple to keep clean. And
its easy to apply
Toss the decorative paint chips as you nish each
section and youre done.
Its time to organize! From shelving to work-
benches to storage pieces designed for sports
equipment, there is a plethora of garage storage
options available to help you get organized. Visit
your local hardware store to nd the best option
for your needs. Youll be surprised how a little or-
ganization can maximize your garage space.

Keeping Families Safe
Behind The Wheel
(NAPSI) From the hottest to coldest and
wettest to driest, extreme weather takes a
toll on a vehicle, including wiper blades.
Rain and snowfall mean wipers should
be checked for wear from use, while dry
and hot weather can also damage wiper
blades. Extreme heat or extended periods
of nonuse can cause the blade rubber to
take a set or curve in one direction, caus-
ing poor wiping performance and limited
visibility through the windshield.
To prepare your car for nasty weather,
inspecting wiper blades should be part
of your seasonal safety check. Properly
maintained wiper blades are an easy, low-
cost way to ensure the clearest sight line
in inclement weather and improve driving
safety.
An estimated 90 percent of a motorists
driving decisions are based on how well
he or she sees the road, yet many drivers
overlook replacing worn wiper blades.
Studies show that driver vision is a fac-
tor in more than 40 percent of all vehicle
crashes.
I cant imagine anything being more
important than the ability of the driver to
see clearly through the windshield, says
Alexia Hayes, a wiper blade technical en-
gineer and mother of two young children.
Hayes suggests checking blades periodi-
cally and replacing them about every six
months.
Wiper blades are one of the most over-
looked pieces of safety equipment, says
Hayes. But you wont nd a faster or
lower-cost way to make yourself and your
family safer than by changing them.
Better Blades
Worn, torn or inefcient blades leave
streaks, a lm and an inconsistent view
of the road that can limit vision or delay
driver judgment. New blades can provide
a better and longer-lasting clear view of
the road.
