Presidents Message
Welcome Back! How was your summer? I know you are hearing this across the state as you go back to school or as you welcome educators into your institutions. As I write this newsletter article, weve almost made it through the summer heat. Soon temperatures will be more accommodating for outdoor experiences hiking, pleine air painting, or just sitting and enjoying the breeze and watching the beautiful leaves that will soon be here. Its TAEA Fall Conference time too. This year, Memphis College of Art is our host site.We are so fortunate as a state association that the colleges and schools across the state want to host this event. We are able to come together in one place and share our common concerns about art education in the state, about the challenges in our jobs, brainstorm ideas on how to effectively advocate for the arts within our institutions and to our legislators, and be creative! The conference also allows you an opportunity to let the TAEA Board know about your needs and desires for the association. You can share ideas with your division representatives, listen to Carrie Mae Weems talk about her work as an artist and an educator, and gain new ideas for using in your work and practice. If you have not attended before, I encourage you to come and experience the strength of our association. If you have attended before, please share your experience with a colleague and bring them with you!

Carrie mae Weems

Over the past twentyfive years, Weems has produced provocative, beautiful, and nuanced photographs, films, and installations. She began her career in the late 1970s, looking to her own family in exploring contemporary African American identity. Her narrative soon broadened to general aspects of the African Diaspora, from the legacy of slavery to the perpetuation of debilitating stereotypes and nourishing folk traditions, represented through a combination of image and text. Today Weems continues to address struggles of empowerment and oppression. Weems has also exhibited throughout the United States and internationally for more than twenty years, and has had solo and group shows at The Museum of Modern Art, the International Center of Photography, the J. Paul Getty Museum, The High Museum of Art, The Walker Art Center, and The Whitney Museum. The Frist Center for the Visual Arts will exhibit the first retrospective of her work from September 21, 2012-January 13, 2013.

Next year, the Tennessee Arts Academy will be Sunday, July 8-13, 2012. In addition to the Tennessee Arts Academy, we will again sponsor the Best of the Best State Student Art Exhibition in Gallery 121 of the Leu Visual Arts Building, as well as the second annual Tennessee Art Education Association Connections member exhibition on the campus of Belmont University.

B E l M O N T U N I V E R S I T y, N A S h V I l l E , T E N N E S S E E - J U ly 1 0 - 1 7 , 2 0 1 1 Jim Dodson,Tennessee Arts Academy Director, writes This summer we had a terrific time at the Tennessee Arts Academy. In addition to having our first Tennessee Art Education Association member exhibition this was the second year TAEA sponsored Tennessees Best of the Best Student Art Exhibition. During the night of the recognition reception over 150 students, parents, and Art educators attended the reception. Several TAEA members received monetary awards for having their work selected as Best of Show, First, Second,Third and Honorable Mention in the exhibit and students were again recognized for having their work displayed in The Leu Center for Visual Arts. Over 275 participants attended the Tennessee Arts Academy this summer with around 100 enrolled in the visual arts component. Participants received instruction in a wide range of topics including AP portfolio development as well as printmaking and ceramics from a group of five instructors brought to the academy from across the nation. In the elementary/lower middle division Pearl Krepps taught printmaking for elementary and lower middle grades while Pam Stephens had a section entitled Dropping In On the Tennessee Arts Academy. Workshop sessions in our upper middle school/secondary division included David and Tracy Gamble who taught clay teapots and mask-making and Gary Snidecor whose session was titled Handfuls of Ideas for Drawing and Painting in the Advanced Placement Program. Two of the highlights of the Academy came when TAEA member and Past-President Flowerree Galetovic received the Tennessee Arts Academy Lifetime Achievement Award as well as receiving Best of Show in the TAEA member art exhibition. A second highlight came when we enjoyed a performance by Oscar winner Marvin Hamlisch who received the Distinguished Service Award from the Tennessee Arts Academy. Finally, I would like to thank my wonderful facilitators who worked so hard to make this academy one of the best: Debbie Flynt, Ken Snyder, Kim Shamblin, Cassie Stevens, Libby Lynch and Tina Atkinson for coming in and providing her display unit to showcase our wonderful artwork that the participants created this summer. Jackie Spaulding-Wright,Youth Art Month chair, writes Art Reflects the Soul Attention all Art Educators, we are announcing the 2011/2012 Youth Art Month Flag Contest theme early to step into the school year on the right foot! We realize this will be a tough year on all teachers, hopefully this will give you enough time to focus on this contest. We should stand united to focus on the importance of art education in the community. Sargent Art will be sponsoring prizes again this year. The winning flag designer and teacher will win a paid trip to New York! First place prizes in elementary, middle and high school, students and teachers, will be awarded supplies from Sargent Art. The theme of Art Reflects the Soul, conveys how art connects diversity, as well as individuality. Remember this is a visual art flag contest for the WHOLE state of Tennessee. Each region (middle, east, and west) should be represented. Please do not allow students to concentrate on music more than visual art. During the school year please send us pictures, and information on special events and activities that promote art education. Newspaper clippings, school newsletters, or radio ads that

yOUTh ART MONTh promote art need to be submitted to Youth Art Month Cochairs. We need to gather and document information to help art education from being eliminated from school programs. Please use the available tools provided to help you advocate for art education: Youth Art Month Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/pages/Tennessee-Youth-ArtMonth/122248634528094 Join Step Up and Speak Out for Art Education Cause on Facebook http://www.causes.com/causes/267803 You can support Youth Art Month by donating items for the silent auction at the TAEA State Fall Conference in Memphis. Gift certificates, art supplies, art pieces, art books, handmade crafts, or money donations would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your participation! Middle Region Conference

F R i S t C e n t e R F o R t h e A R t S , n A S h v i l l e M Ay 2 1 , 2 0 1 1 Andrea Steele, Middle TN rep, writes Creative Craft Community On May 21, the Middle Region TAEA Summer Conference was held in Nashville at the Frist Center for the Visual Arts. This full-day event provided an opportunity for art educators to connect with members of the local craft community through interactive demonstrations and a handson workshop. Conference sessions allowed participants to get to know three artists, examine their creative processes, and learn applications for teaching students of all ages and skill levels. The conference highlighted Cheekwoods popular Craft Outreach program and featured three of their demonstration artists Teresa Hays, Brenda Stein, and Vickie Vipperman. Teresa Hays, who specializes in textiles, taught an engaging hands-on workshop in which participants learned a variety of techniques for marbling paper and fabric. Brenda Stein and Vickie Vipperman brought their art forms (woodturning and weaving) to life through dynamic demonstrations. With all eyes on them, Brenda skillfully transformed a piece of wood into a beautiful vase and spinning top, and Vickie used her hand-dyed yarns to create an intricately woven scarf. Throughout the day, these three artists imparted a great deal of knowledge and skill that can be applied to both classroom teaching and personal art-making. Yet, what seemed to resonate most with the group was the artists passion for art and their desire to educate. This common interest resulted in an energetic dialogue that left everyone feeling inspired and rejuvenated. These types of experiences sustain us in our work as art education professionals, and we extend a special thanks to our sponsors for supporting the professional growth of TAEA members. 2011 Summer Conference sponsors: Frist Center for the Visual Arts Cheekwood Botanical Garden & Museum of Art Tennessee Association of Craft Artists Davis Publications Panera Bread Plans are already in the works for the 2012 Middle TAEA Conference. If you have suggestions or ideas to share, please email them to Andrea Steele at asteele@fristcenter.org.
