Anchorage High School 13400 Elmore Rd Anchorage, Alaska 99516 Dear Mrs. Johnson-Struempler: I am writing to apply for the position of an English teacher as stated on the Anchorage School District website. As stated on my resume I have completed my Bachelors Degree in Education with a focus in English and Psychology, and I intend to work in a school while fulfilling my goal for a Masters Degree in Educational Methods. As you can see from my resume I am highly qualified in English and Psychology, which makes me able to teach a wider variety of classes. In this letter I will demonstrate my skills and will demonstrate that I am qualified for this position. I have become sensitive to diverse audiences through my practicum experience at Moscow High School. I worked with a variety of diverse students ranging in ethnicity, socioeconomic status and mental capacities. This proved to a difficult challenge. Being involved with these students and teaching them difficult material has allowed me to gain a great understanding of how to differentiate material and make it accessible to students across the spectrum. For example, I created a lesson that gave students the option to pick from a variety of projects ranging from essays to oral presentations. This lesson challenged exceptional students at their level of achievement and assessed students based on their strengths. I tailored the lesson to hold the interest of higher achieving students without intimidating lower achieving students. My management skills are exemplary when it comes to the classroom. I have developed these skills through my practicum experience and through coaching high school swimmers. I learned that setting clear expectations and guidelines aided students in their academic success. By being consistent students knew what to expect from me and in return their behavior improved and they learned to treat me and other classmates with respect. I tried to keep my swimmers and students constantly involved by asking questions and having multiple activities. Because of this I was able to keep students and swimmers on task. I have described my classroom management plan and discipline plan in more clear detail in the following pages, labeled Classroom Management Plan. My knowledge and abilities in the classroom, combined with my enthusiasm for teaching makes me an excellent candidate for this position as a secondary English teacher. I believe that every student has a right to an education, and I intend to motivate students to find their inner strengths and abilities through their education.
