blessed by the outpouring of support by friends and neighbors. He said the firefighters who responded last Saturday were a great help and were terrific with his five young children. Lorrie Rhoton with the American Red Cross was on the scene, and gave the family greatly needed support. Kathy Stickley, a neighbor of the Stones, brought the family totes full of clothes. Armel Elementary School and Aylor Middle School, where the Stone children attend school, have been a great help supplying the kids with bookbags, coats and supplies. The schools have arranged to help ferry the kids to and from school, while the family is in transition. The Middletown United Methodist Church and the Shenandoah Valley Church of Christ both supported the family in their time of need. At this time, Mr. Stone believes the family is set given all of the donations they have received. However, we will continue to support the family and any needs will be reported forthwith.

By Sue Golden Frederick County Report Last weekend, the Stone family was burned out of their home. A fire, which appears to have started in the dryer did significant damage to the home of the family of seven. After spending three days at a hotel, courtesy of the American Red Cross, the Stone family was preparing to move in with Dean Stones parents. There are two buildings at the Stone residence, in the 6600 block of the Valley Pike near the scales in Middletown. According to Dean Stone, the family intends to clean out the second building and to live in it while the family renovates the bigger house which was severely damaged by the fire. The family was meeting with their insurance agents on Tuesday. Mr. Stone said the family has been

Id like to hire a contractor to take care of shoveling snow from my walkways and driveway after a snowstorm, as Im getting too old to do it myself. What are standard rates for snowclearing service, and how can I be sure to get a reputable contractor? Jesse H., Foxboro, Mass. Rates for snow-clearing service can vary widely depending on which region of the country you live in, the frequency and depth of each snowfall, and the exact type of service youre contracting for. In the Northeast, there are a great number of independent contractors willing to take on this service for you. Some depend on it for extra income, attaching a plow to their four-wheeldrive vehicle, while others, such as landscapers, offer it as part of a yearround yard service. Try to get a word-of-mouth recommendation from neighbors, friends or family first. Youll want to know some specific service details: Is the contractor licensed and insured to cover potential damage to your property? Do they charge for snow removal per storm, or do they have a monthly rate? At what snow depth do they begin charging an additional fee? (Its not uncommon to increase the rate for storms that drop more than 14 inches.) And what exact services will they provide: just the driveway and the

walk to the door, or all of your homes outside walkways? Do they include application of snowmelt or salt/sand as part of the service? (They should.) Do they offer additional services, like clearing snow off of the roof, and how much do they charge for those? Do you have to contract with them for the entire winter (often December to April in your region)? Under what Bright orange markers called snow stakes should be placed along the edges of your driveway, either by the contractor or you, to mark them for snowplows, preventing damage to curbing and lawns.

A:

conditions can you cancel a contract (such as failure to complete snow removal within a specified time period following a storm)? Compare the estimates from at least three or more potential contractors. Its particularly important to review them with a trusted family member or friend who can help you decide which contractor to hire. We make fresh garlands and sell locally made Christmas wreaths for those interested in decorating for the holidays and we even do some decorating for people, Elisa said. And business has been good. Of course wed always love to have more business, but we have been so happy to meet new people in Winchester and everyone has been very welcoming, and we have quickly accrued some very regular customers, she said. She added that people drop in the shop just to say, Youve given us the most beautiful flowers weve ever had. Theyd love to see people walk around the corner of the building they share with the Daily grind and give them a visit. Upcoming Holiday events include: a Butterfly Mixer on December 7 from 5 to 7 p.m. with Bluebells donating a portion of the nights sales to Blue Ridge Hospice. Their focus is on reforming how the core fundamentals of youth athletics are taught. Classes are scheduled to start on Dec. 7 and continue through until Dec. 31. They will be held at the Braddock Street United Methodist Church gymnasium at 115 Wolfe St. The name .400 Club comes from the .400 batting average which is a mark of high achievement and expectations, said Russ Hagerdon, spokesman for the group. All four members of the Hagerdon family will conduct classes. Russ and Mary are both skilled coaches. Mary, who is also a veterinarian with the Winchester Animal Hospital, is an athletic coach at Clarke County High School and Johnson Williams Middle School in Berryville and a USA volleyball official. Russ has coached since 1983 and is also a volunteer umpire. They both have participated in sports as players. He added that because they are coaches both have updated back-

ground checks and drug screens. Their children Amy and Levi are outstanding athletes in high school and college. Amy is a sophomore at Hood College in Frederick, Md. And most recently was named the 2011 Hood College volleyball MVP because of her record of leading in assists, digs, and aces. She learned some basics from her Mom, said Russ. Levi is a four-sport athlete at Clarke County High School and the idea of a sports camp originated with him. Both Amy and Levi have committed to giving up a huge chunk of their December school break to assist in coaching. Russ said that a lot of school teams dont practice during the vacations, so this will give kids a chance to come in and practice their skills. The Hagerdons believe that skills taught with attention to detail, cause the childs muscle memory to record good habits from an early age. This memory stays with them when they start to compete and they can achieve outstanding results.

angie@FredCoReport.com alison@FredCoReport.com
We teach the mechanics earlier and show the exact way to catch and throw the ball, Russ emphasized They plan to teach the fundamentals of volleyball, baseball, softball and basketball to children separated into age groups of 7-9 and 10-12 year-olds. Each session involves one of the four sports. And the 90-minute sessions are held with a ratio of 1 teacher to every six children, a ratio far below most other camps, according to Russ. Muscle memory requires repetitive practice and thats why we offer so many sessions and are committed to seeing them improve, he said. Camp starts Dec. 7 and continues until the 31st. And the first three sessions set for Dec. 7, 8 and 9 are already filled.

Middletown continues to be deviled by water main breaks. window fashions

Middletown is looking to replace its banners. This one is ten years old.

By Sue Golden Frederick County Report The Middletown Town Council went into a closed session last night to discuss personnel matters. No one would comment on the session. Mayor Mark Brown insisted that the Council spend $175 to hire Winchester Environmental Consultants to test samples taken from the crumbling ceiling on the second

floor of Town Hall. Since no one appears to know when the ceiling was installed, the Mayor feels that the sampling is mandatory to protect the town from liability. Charles H. Harbaugh, IV was appointed Vice Mayor of Middletown. Councilor Mark Davis said the Planning and Zoning Commission has prepared a list of recommendations to update the Town Code to more specifically work with the State

Code, etc. The Commission will present its list of changes to the Council and Town Attorney for approval. There will be a meeting at the Frederick County Board of Supervisors on December 15th at 7 p.m. to discuss the updated Reliance Road Area Changes. Middletown residents are strongly encouraged to attend the meeting. The Council is looking to install pedestrian crosswalks at both the 7-11 and the Wayside Theatre, the two places where there is the most pedestrian traffic. The crosswalks will be based on crosswalks installed in other communities which were approved by VDOT. The Council was informed that the Town is ready for snow removal. A dry-run was done to ensure the trucks were ready. Council has received a number of bids to replace broken

water lines. The bids are so divergent that the Mayor asked for a follow up e-mail to ensure the parties know what they are bidding on. There are two vacant positions on the Planning and Zoning Commission. All interested parties are asked to contact Town Hall. The July 4th committee will

NCI launches smoking cessation support for teens

A new effort to help teens quit smoking will use one of todays teens most constant companions the mobile phone. Developed by smoking cessation experts, SmokefreeTXT is a free text message cessation service that provides 24/7 encouragement, advice, and tips to teens trying to quit smoking. The initiative is led by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), part of the National Institutes of Health. Once they sign up, teens receive text messages timed according to their selected quit date. Following their quit date, they will continue receiving texts for up to six weeks a critical piece of the SmokefreeTXT service, as research shows that cessation support continues to be important beyond the first few weeks of quitting. Teens can sign up online at teen. smokefree.gov or text QUIT to iQUIT (47848). Nearly 20 percent of teens are current smokers, and most will continue smoking into adulthood unless efforts are made to help them quit now. Many teens want to quit, but few use evidencebased cessation resources to support their quit attempts. By connecting with teen smokers on their mobile phones, NCI hopes to more effectively engage young people in quitting with proven cessation tools and strategies. SmokefreeTXT is a key component of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services efforts to develop mobile health programs and is one of the core features of the new Smokefree Teen initiative (teen.smokefree.gov), an extension of NCIs smoking cessation website, smokefree.gov. Along with SmokefreeTXT, Smokefree Teen offers several social media pages to connect teens with cessation tools. In January 2012, Smokefree Teen will launch a free smartphone application, QuitSTART an interactive quit guide for teens that delivers cessation and mood management tips, tracks cravings, and monitors quit attempts. With 75 percent of youths between the ages of 12 and 17 owning a cell phone, there is immense potential for mobile technologies to affect health awareness and behavior change among teens, said Erik Augustson, Ph.D., a behavioral scientist in NCIs Tobacco Control Research Branch. the burned home after 12 days. Neighbors took Topaz in, and paid for his veterinary care for burns he sustained in the fire. Tigger was rescued from the fire, and received mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and oxygen at the scene. An animal control officer took Tigger to the Plaza Pet Clinic in Winchester. Tigger suffered from extremely low oxygen levels, and had very serious burns; Tiggers ears were burned so severely that Dr. Wartluft had to trim his ears. His paws were burned completely off, and had to grow back. Now that he is home, in a new home, Tigger is still adjusting. He and Topaz are thrilled to be back together. The two frolic and play. Topaz, presumably knowing the pain Tigger has been through, lets Tigger eat first. Colton is ecstatic to have Tigger home; he thinks he looks like a teddy bear with his clipped ears. Tigger is still gun shy. He tends to hide in Tracy and Kevins bed room. He still sleeps wrapped around Tracy. He is afraid of loud noises. But he is home. To everyone who has helped the Fletcher family as they have made their way during the last few months, a big thank you. And to the generous soul who paid Tiggers veterinary bill, well, there arent enough words. Thank you. As the Mayor said, it is the giving season.

Mysterious Mistletoe

Scandanavians associated Mistletoe with Frigga, their goddess of love, and it may be from this that we derive the custom of kissing under the mistletoe. Those who kissed under the mistletoe had the promise of happiness and good luck in the following year. The practice of kissing under the mistletoe was described in 1820 by American author Washington Irving in his The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon: The mistletoe is still hung up in farm-houses and kitchens at Christmas, and the young men have the privilege of kissing the girls under it, plucking each time a berry from the bush. When the berries are all plucked the privilege ceases.

album) figured prominently in Greek mythology, and is believed to be The Golden Bough of Aeneas, ancestor of the Romans. It is said that among Romans, enemies who met under mistletoe would lay down their weapons and embrace. Mistletoe is rarely found growing on oak trees, and as such was especially sacred to the ancient Celtic Druids. On the sixth night of the moon, whiterobed Druid priests would cut the oak mistletoe with a golden sickle. Two white bulls would be sacrificed amid prayers that the recipients of the mistletoe would prosper. The sticky juice of mistletoe berries was used as adhesive to trap small

By Sue Golden Frederick County Report Tigger came home last Saturday, after an anonymous donor paid his veterinary bill in full. After the Frederick County Report wrote about Tigger in last weeks edition, our readers were motivated. A local artist volunteered to do a portrait of Tigger, and to sell copies to help pay Tiggers bill. Others volunteered to work at the Clinic, to help defray Tiggers expenses. And one kind, giving soul paid the bill in its entirety.

There were many tears falling when Tigger finally went home. The staff at the Plaza Pet Clinic in Winchester fell in love with Tigger. Dr. Wartluft came in on her day off to do surgery on the burned kittys ears. The staff worked on their own time to take care of poor Tigger. And the clinic wrote off close to $1,000. But the Fletcher family, who was burned out of their home on Halloween, was eager to take Tigger home. The Fletchers had three cats at the time of the fire. Lucky died in the fire. Topaz disappeared, but returned to

Detail from Norman Rockwell's Merrie Christmas Couple Dancing Under the Mistletoe Mistletoe was used by Druid priests 200 years before the birth of Christ in their winter celebrations. They revered the plant since it had no roots yet remained green during the cold months of winter. Mistletoe is intriguing botanically because it is a partial parasite (a hemiparasite). As a parasitic plant, it grows on the branches or trunk of a tree and sends out roots that penetrate into the tree and take up nutrients. But it also can grow on its own and produce food by photosynthesis. The mistletoe that is commonly used as a Christmas decoration (Phoradendron flavescens) is native to North America and grows as a parasite on trees in the West and also along a line down the East Coast from New Jersey to Florida. animals or birds. In South Africa, it is called Bird lime in English. According to custom in the English-speaking world, the mistletoe must not touch the ground between its cutting and its removal as the last of Christmas greens at Candlemas; it may remain hanging through the year, often to preserve the house from lightning or fire, until it was replaced the following Christmas Eve. In the Middle Ages and later, branches of mistletoe were hung from ceilings to ward off evil spirits. In Europe they were placed over house and stable doors to prevent the entrance of witches. In some parts of England, the Christmas mistletoe is burned on the 12th night lest all the boys and girls who have kissed under it never marry.

Holiday Weight-Gain Myth Is Bunk, Scientists Say

The 2012 Presidential election is heating up quickly as the Republicans stand only a month away from their first caucus in Iowa, and the conservative base still seems split over whom to nominate. Meanwhile, the Presidents campaign has buoyed slightly with the arrival of some welcome economic news. While the Republicans focus on the nomination fight, the President and his advisers have been crisscrossing the battleground states that he needs to win, including the Old Dominion. A new frontrunner has emerged in the surprising person of former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. The latest in a parade of anti-Romney candidates, he has consolidated the support that drained from Herman Cains campaign as he was forced out of the race by allegations of infidelity. Gingrich, despite his checkered personal past and some inconsistencies in policy positions, is seen by both sides as an intellectual force to be reckoned with. Unlike Rick Perry or Michelle Bachmann, mainstream Republicans believe he can survive a debate with a President whose worst enemies normally admit is cerebral. Gingrich has a substantial lead in Iowa and South Carolina, and the most recent national polls show him beating Mitt Romney. Romney, while seen as highly electable, is not well liked by the tea party voters likely to dominate the early nomination fights. Romneys campaign has reportedly decided to go negative in a big way against Gingrich, a sign that many political watchers view as a sign of weakness and desperation. However, Romneys message of electability and economic prowess has obviously not been working. The Obama campaign is likely thrilled with the ascension of Gingrich. If he actually pulls off the nomination, Obamas chances for reelection will surge, as Gingrich would be much less palatable to independent voters who are soured on the President. These voters would likely be more impressed with the polished Romney. Also, Gingrich doesnt have to win to help Obama. In previous years, the winner of a primary took all the delegates of that state. Now the GOP is switching to a proportional system similar to the one Obama used to defeat Hillary Clinton. Just by keeping it close, Gingrich can drag the nomination battle through the spring and create a bloody political knife fight, all while the President marshals his vast resources. Meanwhile, the unemployment rate dropped the largest margin in years, welcome news to the embattled White House. The drop actually indicates people stopping their job search and does not really indicate a recovery, but the average American pays close attention to that number. Indeed, no number other than the 270 electoral votes needed to win will so decide who is the next President as the unemployment rate. Its drop is a good sign for Obama, who has the asset of having killed Osama Bin Laden, inoculating him from the typical Republican attacks on Democrats foreign policy. The next month will go a long way toward deciding the Republican nomination. My next column will come the week before the Iowa caucus, when we should have polling data and anecdotal evidence enough to make a prediction about the winner of the Iowa caucus. For now, Gingrich looks very strong and the chances of an Obama reelection have risen dramatically.

The common assumption that people put on 5 pounds over the holidays has been studied and actually found to be a myth, according to scientists at Vanderbilt University. In fact, weight gain from Thanksgiving through New Years is, on average, closer to threequarters of a pound to 1 pound. And while this doesnt sound as drastic, what typically happens with obesity is that people gain weight slowly and keep it on, said Vanderbilt obesity expert Roger Cone, Ph.D., professor and chairman of Molecular Physiology & Biophysics. Its not just overeating at holidays. We are chronically overeating and under-exercising in this country, Cone said. And what happens then is your weight gradually creeps up. If we do become obese, its because there is a minor difference between what we are consuming and what we are burning, he said. So the trick is to try to match your energy expenditure with your energy intake, to try to control your diet overall and keep it healthy, and to try to up your activity until the two are in balance. Obesity leads to health-care costs that are 36 percent higher, on average, and a 77 percent increase in medication costs. Liz Aleman, Healthy Childrens program manager for Monroe Carell Jr. Childrens Hospital at Vanderbilt, said obesity is the result of poor choices and behaviors more than genetics and metabolism, which means there is a lot a person can do to fight obesity. Focus beyond the Thanksgiving table and holiday overeating. The struggle with obesity is year-round.
