LONDON SChOOL OF ECONOMICS AND POLITICAL SCIENCE

The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) was founded in 1895 for the study of social sciences. It is part of the federal University of London and is situated in the centre of London. The LSE has been rated as a major centre of research and teaching not only in economics (five former Nobel Prize winners in economics have taught at the LSE) but in all the branches of the social sciences and related fields.
Current research consists not only of explorations of theoretical and technical developments in the different academic disciplines but also of works on topical and practical concerns. Past and present members of staff act as expert advisors to politicians and governments throughout the world, and are regularly called on to contribute advice and analysis on their subjects to the media, including the BBC World Service. The LSE is responsible for the academic direction of three major undergraduate programmes (BSc Standard Route, Graduate Entry Route and Diploma for Graduates) and the Diploma in Economics and Diploma in Social Sciences. This responsibility includes the development of the syllabuses and Virtual Learning Environment, writing the subject guides, giving advice to students and institutions and setting and marking examinations ensuring that students are examined to the high standards required by the University of London as a whole. More information can be obtained from www.lse.ac.uk/LSEExternalStudy

UNIVERSITY OF LONDON INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMMES AT SIM

Effective Teaching and Guidance
Only SIM provides intensive revision workshops by UK academics for the bulk of the units we teach. Students have praised these workshops for their effectiveness in helping them prepare for their examinations. Students also sit for SIM preliminary exams set and marked by the academics from the UK. The effectiveness of our teaching methods is reflected in the fact that SIM has consistently produced top graduates of the University of London International Programmes. Since 1993, we have produced first class honours graduates on an annual basis. Given the number of students that are awarded first class honours degree through the University of London International Programmes, this is quite an achievement. The awarding of Affiliate Centre status to SIM by the University of London is a reflection of our sustained commitment to high standards in respect of the teaching, support and administration of students of the University of London International Programmes. At SIM, students attend 3-hour lectures-cum-tutorial sessions and an effective revision programme.

Distinctions and Firsts

Some of the milestones (programmes under LSE) in terms of first class honours were: 1993 1994 1996 2007 2008 2009 2010 two out of the four first class honours winners worldwide were SIM graduates. the only two first class honours winners worldwide were both SIM graduates. Ms Hong Sew Moi won the John Maxwell Prize for being the top final year BSc (Econ) External student. six out of the nine first class honours winners worldwide were SIM graduates. Ms Tan Li Peng was joint-winner of the prestigious Gerstenberg Prize in Economics. Up from 14 first class honours, 39 SIM graduates attained first class honours. SIM students top the world in 18 examinations. 58 SIM graduates attained first class honours Another 17 earned a Diploma in Economics with Distinction. SIM students top the world in 24 examinations. 49 SIM graduates attained first class honours. Another 36 earned a Diploma in Economics with Distinction. 39 SIM students topped the world in 30 examinations. A record 86 graduate with first class honours.

SIM offered me an all rounded education. Besides the usual lecture classes, we were also able to opt for enrichment courses like resume writing and business etiquette classes. These widened our exposure and definitely helped us in search of permanent employment.

Mode of Study

At SIM, you will be engaged in a variety of teaching environments. Classes are delivered in a carefully designed mixture of lectures and workshops, enabling you to experience a diversity of styles for optimal learning. Full-time classes are held five times a week between Mondays to Saturdays, starting at 8.30am, 12pm or 3.30pm in three-hour blocks. There are occasional classes held at 7pm and on Sundays and public holidays. Classes for parttime programmes are held from 7-10pm on weeknights or from 3.30-6.30pm on Saturdays, with occasional classes held on Sundays or public holidays. Local students may transfer between the part-time and full-time programme after a year, subject to space availability. An annual intensive revision period is organised between mid-March and early May to prepare students for the examinations. These lessons are taught by both UK and local lecturers and may be held in the evenings or on weekends and public holidays.

High Employability

SIMs University of London graduates have consistently demonstrated high employability according to SIMs annual Graduate Employment survey. The survey on the Class of 2008 showed an employment rate of 92%, rather healthy considering the economic climate. Some findings of the employment survey are as follows: 31% found jobs in the finance/accounting industry 14% found marketing/sales positions 9% work in administrative functions 42% work in wholly foreign-owned firms (MNC and non-MNC) 14% in wholly local-owned companies (public) 26% work in local-owned private organisations 14.5% work in government ministries The average starting salary for graduates (full-time) was between S$2,200 and S$2,400. Survey respondents earning more than S$2,600 per month increased from 16% to 30%.

Attendance Requirement

Diploma in Economics students must maintain a minimum attendance of 90%, failing which the student will not be permitted to register/sit for the university examinations. For the BSc degree and Diploma for Graduates programmes, SIM requires a minimum attendance of 75% for each academic year. International students should be aware of the 90% attendance requirement to maintain their students pass.

Assessment and Classification

SIM assignments, class tests and preliminary examinations allow students sufficient practice for the Universitys annual examinations. These examinations account for 100% of the assessment for most papers. The exception is for selected Information Systems units like 60, 139, 159 where coursework needs to be assessed by the University. The BSc programme is an honours programme and students are classified according to their performance in examinations First Class, Upper Second, Lower Second or Third Class honours. A Pass classification may be awarded at the Universitys discretion. For the Diploma in Economics, candidates who do well can attain a diploma with Distinction, Merit or Credit. Those in the Diploma for Graduates programmes may be awarded diplomas with Distinction or Merit.

Graduates from the SIM undergraduate programme have gone on to complete masters degrees at Cambridge, Warwick, Nottingham, LSE and University College London in the UK. Graduates have also pursued postgraduate degrees at NUS, NTU, SMU in Singapore and the Chicago Graduate School of Business, etc. Although most students complete their basic degree at SIM, several have opted to transfer to overseas universities after a year in the Diploma in Economics or first year of the degree. Students may apply to transfer to over 20 universities in the UK, which have indicated their interest to accept graduates from our first year programme. More information can be obtained from www.lse.ac.uk/LSEExternalStudy

Promotion and Graduation

Degree Accreditation

The University of London was the third English educational institution to be conferred a recognised university status by the Royal Charter back in 1836. Since then, it has consistently passed the regular inspection by the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education with flying colours. It is also a member of the Association of the Commonwealth Universities. The University of London International Programmes have been rated one of the most prestigious around the world by students, academia and employers alike. All University of London degrees are fully recognised and accredited qualifications. The BSc degrees are accepted by the Singapore Public Service Division as a first degree in considering applications for employment in the civil service.

Each programme is made up of a collection of full and half units. It is normally expected that candidates will take on four full units per academic year and three years to graduate with a BSc degree (or four units in one year to complete the Diploma). Candidates who fail a unit may be allowed to repeat the unit and resit the examination the following year, along with other new units. Units which have been passed may not be re-taken. Students are allowed to progress through each academic year till they meet the minimum requirement to be classified/graduate. BSc students who graduate from SIM will be able to participate in a fully-gowned presentation ceremony. A certificate is presented to each graduate to mark the completion of the programme. This SIM ceremony is usually held in April. Graduates may also choose to attend the University of London Conferral Degree Ceremony in London which is held annually in March. Graduates can be part of the University of London International Programmes Alumni Association.

Fee Protection Scheme

The MOEs Council for Private Education (CPE) in aiming to enhance the confidence of students and their parents in the quality of education in Singapore, has stipulated that all Private Education Institutions (PEIs) must sign a standard PEI-Student Contract with students. The contract lays out the important terms and conditions governing the relationship between the student and PEI. SIM will honour all terms and conditions spelt out in the contract and in all communication materials. Also as required by CPE, we have in place a Fee Protection Scheme (FPS). The FPS serves to protect the students fees in the event that the PEI is unable to continue operations due to insolvency, and/or regulatory closure. In addition, the FPS protects the student if the PEI fails to pay penalties or return fees to the student arising from judgments made against it by the Singapore courts. The FPS is compulsory for all students and is available in 2 forms, either insurance or escrow scheme. For more information, please visit www.sim.edu.sg/edutrust.html. SIM has appointed Lonpac Insurance Bhd as our FPS insurance provider. Under the FPS insurance scheme, students fees are insured by Lonpac Insurance Bhd. In case of events, as stated above, students will be able to claim their paid fees from Lonpac. We have also appointed Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited (HSBC) as our FPS escrow provider. Under the FPS escrow scheme, students will pay their fees directly to HSBC. HSBC will act as the custodian of students fees and will only disburse the fees to us on a fixed schedule. Again, in case of events, as stated above, students will be able to retrieve their unconsumed fees from HSBC. More details of the FPS can also be found in the FPS Instruction Manual, available at www.cpe.gov.sg.
