The kite and the collection...

Cultures the world over have deep and intimate relationships with kites. Myths and legends since the dawn of time talk of the Maori kite in the shape of a bird. A link between man and their gods, the future was prophesied as omens were read from the kites dancing in the wind. Untouched World t m finds its whole philosophy reflected in the kite; the ideal relationship between man and nature; the outcome of an art involving natural materials and human skills; the link between the earth and the sky symbolising a soaring freedom of the spirit. West of Windwhistle, the winter collection for 2006, was inspired by the ruggedness of the Southern Alps, in particular a very special spot called Lake Ida, where generations have let their hair down skating on the frozen lake. The spirit of Untouched World t m lies not only within the dramatic landscape that inspires the design, but also in our desire to design for sustainability, in combination with sophistication, style and quality. The collection has been designed for men on the move, for work or for play. It moves seamlessly from the remote outdoors, to downtown, cafe or jazz club. The beauty of the collection is that it can do all this across time and climate zones with simplicity and ease, through layering of even the most minimalist selection. Inside we have stories about two inspiring Untouched World t m ers Phil Keoghan, host of television show The Amazing Race and Adine Wilson, captain of the Silver Ferns. For the first time we bring you the convenience of ordering the collection directly. Simply call, fax or email us with your request. All the information for direct ordering is in the centre of the catalogue. We have had a lot of fun creating this winter collection for you. Wherever you end up in the world this winter, sit back, relax and live every day like it s a holiday!

In addition to being super soft, machine washable and prickle free, Mountainsilk tm naturally repels odour, so you don t have to wash it as often, it is flame and heat resistant which makes it ideal for wearing while travelling and it is UV resistant. Mountainsilk tm s natural temperature regulating properties work by creating a micro-climate next to your skin which constantly changes to keep your temperature in perfect balance. Mountainsilk t m actively absorbs heat energy into thousands of micro-porous cells to cool you down, and releases the stored heat energy back to you when you are cool, meaning you do not experience the uncomfortable swinging sensation of overheating and overcooling of other textiles. Mountainsilk tm is also an excellent insulator. Mountainsilk tm achieves its superior insulation properties by trapping still air in millions of tiny spaces. These spaces are not only in the fabric structure, but also in the yarn structure and between the crimped fibres themselves. This abundance of trapped air enables M o u n t a i n s i l k tm t o i n s u l a t e v e r y e f f e c t i v e l y f o r optimum comfort and performance.

Mountainsilk tm has excellent moisture management properties, meaning you stay dry and comfortable a lot longer than in other fabrics. The key to Mountainsilk tm s moisture management system is the natural wax-like substance that coats each of the individual fibres. As liquid moisture on your body comes in contact with Mountainsilk tm , it is moved away to the face of the fabric where it can evaporate. Moisture vapour can escape through not only the fabric structure, but also directly through the fibres. Mountainsilk tm is a good choice from a sustainability viewpoint, as it is made from a natural, renewable resource and is biodegradable.

Phil Keoghan
THERE AREN T MANY PLACES in the world adventure television personality Phil Keoghan can go without being recognised by fans, so an interview over coffee in the peaceful haven of Untouched World tm s Christchurch garden restaurant was a welcome break recently from the full-on life he has chosen to lead, much of it in the public eye. Host of Discovery Channel s award-winning series and America s most popular reality show The Amazing Race , Phil Keoghan s CV is so packed with activity it earned him a spot on a television documentary called Radical Careering . But few of his international fans would be aware that not only was he born in New Zealand and attended boarding school here, but that he also got his first break in television working as a cameraman at TVNZ s Christchurch studios. Before too long, people like Bryan Alpress recognised in the young Keoghan a flair for performing in front of the camera and he was given a role hosting children s programme Spot On , followed by 3.45 Live . It was around this time, when he was just 19, that Phil had a near-death experience, diving on a wreck 40 meters down. For the first time in my life I thought, my God, I could really die, and I came out of that with a new sense of purpose, a knowledge that I had to really live now. After the near-death experience, Phil wrote a list of the things he wanted to do before he died, and then set about doing them even though it involved moving with his girlfriend (now his wife) Louise to New York. However, the brush with death became the foundation for a philosophy he has developed more recently called No Opportunity Wasted, or NOW. You write a contract for the life you really want, you find a passion for the life you really want. That s really what drives me passion I love unleashing people s passion. When I was 19, my list was a very selfish list, he recalls. Today, his lists are very different: I get as much of a thrill out of helping others tap into their potential as I have in fulfilling my own dreams and my list as it stands now 19 years later is very geared around helping other people. That s why, he says, he s very interested in the Untouched World tm Foundation. It s so good to be able to influence kids

Phil Keoghan...
when they re young, when their minds are pliable, so you can show them that anything is possible. It s so energising because, as we get older, we get more rigid in our way of thinking. We get more cynical and we start to analyse - and thinking about what s wrong with something can be poisonous. So my philosophy is getting away from what you can t have and you can t do and focusing on what you have and what you can do. Instead of looking over the fence and envying what somebody else has, look instead at what you ve got, Phil says. And when you ve worked that out, he encourages you to make a contract with yourself and make a list for life . Along with a NOW television series, he has written a book of the same name, which he wants to inspire people to dream more freely and live more fully. To do that, he asks people to face your fear, get lost, test your limits, take a leap of faith,

(continued)

rediscover your childhood, shed your inhibitions, express yourself, break new ground, and aim for the heart . To promote the book and its philosophy, Phil Keoghan has recently been on a speaking tour of ten American cities in a month and earlier in the year was speaking at the same big Telecom event in New Zealand as Sir Edmund Hillary. Sharing the stage with him and hearing him talk first hand about being a NOW person was a real honour, he says. A favourite piece of clothing as he travels round the world is his Mountainsilk tm merino top from Untouched World tm - he likes it so much, in fact, he told National Geographic Adventure magazine and they published it in an article about The Things they Carried packing pointers from the Amazing Race s road-wise vets. Phil was quoted as saying: It s perfect for layering and, unlike synthetic material, it doesn t get smelly.

M12

He s also said of his black merino top: I can t take it off. Perfect for travelling. Can t believe it holds its shape so well. So how did this Kiwi-born man become such an iconic adventurer and traveller? The travel bug was probably instilled in him from birth he says. His father, a Lincoln College agronomist, travelled the world studying plants at different universities in Canada and the Caribbean returning from trips with stories and often with other plant specialists or musicians. My mum was a music teacher, and our house was always filled with musicians and interesting people coming through. I guess that s where I got a real passion for people. Being uprooted at the age of 12 to travel all the way to New Zealand a stranger in a strange land he hadn t seen since a toddler with a West Indian accent, playing the violin and not knowing anything

about rugby, was an unnerving and character-building experience for him. He was incredibly homesick, but phone calls to Trinidad were very expensive, and his parents could only afford to bring him home once a year for the Christmas holidays. Being different then was not cool. You were supposed to fit in, be the same as everyone else, he recalls. In Trinidad I used to be one of just a few white kids in my class, and suddenly I m in a place where I look like everyone else but on the inside, I m different. On the inside, Phil Keoghan is still very different from most of us he travels the world again and again, pushing people to their limits and beyond to achieve things they d previously only dreamed of doing. But through his book and his television programmes, he can show us all how to make some of our dreams come true.

Merinomink Possum Fine Merino and Luxurious

TM

Matatua Half Zip $415 Style 3290b Merinomink TM Twist Colours: Forest Twist, Slate Twist Sizes: XS - XXL UW Jeans $225 Style 9155c Vintage Wash Cotton Colour: Chalked Denim Sizes: 77 - 97

The Merinomink tm knitwear collection is a luxurious mix of Brushtail Possum and Merino fibres, creating incredibly warm, soft, lightweight garments. Not only are they unique in that they are so light and warm, they will not pill, so they stay looking great. The key to Merinomink tm s warmth and light weight is the unique structure of the Brushtail Possum fibre. Brushtail Possum fibre s hollow structure is very rare. The chambers within the fibre are filled with trapped air which adds to the air trapped within the fibre and in the fabric when blended with high crimp fine Merino fibre. The overall effect is a luxuriously soft, lightweight and very warm garment that has extremely high performance and durability characteristics. The introduction of Brushtail Possums to New Zealand was with good intentions. It did not take long, however, for the predator to take hold against New Zealand s native flora and fauna, becoming an ecological nightmare. With limited natural predators the Brushtail Possum flourished. There are now believed to be around 70 million Brushtail Possums in New Zealand. They not only are almost single-handedly destroying our native forests, but are also destroying the habitat of New Zealand s rare and endangered native birds such as the kiwi and kokako. By choosing to wear Merinomink tm , you are supporting the protection of New Zealand s native species.

This season, for the first time, we have developed a capsule of medium weight felted Merinomink t m for men. Called Birchview the capsule is based on the same technology used in the popular felted women s collection. The felted styles have increased wind resistance, giving a light but more solid handle. We have also designed a capsule of lightweight Merinomink t m styles called Waimak . They are perfect for layering under a jacket or for slipping on in front of a roaring fire apres adventure. Our Merinomink tm classics in chunky 3 gauge are revisited with new twists, Forest and Pacific. All the Merinomink tm collection are handwashable, for easy care.
