CLOSE COMPANY WITH FR. GERRY ARROYO

I was saddened when illness right away caught up with Fr. Gerry when he took some break to be ready for his new assignment. I could perhaps share some of his regrets. At times we are caught up with some lifes painful interventions we couldnt know why. Fr. Gerrys company was one experience of its kind. We come from different seminaries and backgrounds. Surprisingly we got adjusted to each other in few months duration. Fr. Gerry happened to be an accountant graduate before he entered the seminary. He has a love for sacramental ministry and was up-to-date with his reflections for the parish newsletter, Wings! He showed concern for the newly recruited altar servers and the St. Vincent Ferrer Parochial School accounting system. He too grasped how serious some parish problems run extensively. Some people would call him strict but I found his disposition very complimentary to parish ministry. We shared our laughter and interesting topics of conversation either together or with the parish staff. I missed his sound of laughter catching his face and his stomach. I remember when the mayor wanted to invite the President for a town visit. If ever the president would visit the Church, Fr. Gerry would volunteer to meet him first and introduced himself: Im Fr. Arroyo. Anyway, Fr. Gerry expressed his preference to stay longer in the parish when he was only barely a year with us. But the call of another assignment prevailed.

Dear God, you know that our hearts long for the joy and gladness promised by life with you. Help us to remember that you are with us always, and that our hearts will rest only when they rest with you. Holy Spirit, guide the choices we make throughout this week. Help us endure hardship. Remind us to be patient. Stifle our tendency to complain. Help us realize how much we owe the creator for all we have and all we are. Father in heaven, we offer thanks to you for sending John the Baptist to prepare the way for the coming of the savior. Help us to heed the Baptists message to repent and to renew our commitment to live in holiness. Come Lord Jesus. So often we are impatient for your coming, yet we are fearful of living our lives as one with you. Come and ease our anxiety. Come and reward our patience. Come and remove our sorrow. Our communities and our world eagerly await the day of your birth. Amen.

Time flies so fast that without knowing it Father Gerry who had been with us for over a year had to be transferred again to his new assignment. Father Gerry, thank you so much for guiding the pupils, teachers and parents of St. Vincent Ferrer Parochial School. We are going to miss you and we are praying for your early recovery. Thank you for your kindness and concern regarding the welfare of our school. Wishing you good health and good luck to your new assignment! More power and God bless you always! We forget that he is just a human being who commits to serve the Lord on his capacity, with strengths and weaknesses, who also needs support and prayer for him to continue and be a worthy worker in the Lords vineyard. Fr. Gerry is one of these priests who dedicates his life to serve and wants to bring people closer to God. Fr. Gerry has stayed in St. Vincent Parish for almost a year, and as I have known him, he is one of the priests who is committed and dedicate his time to serve the Lord. Some may have misinterpreted him as very strict but he sees to it that our services in the church is not only for our own pleasure but for the Glory of God. I can remember one parishioner after hearing his homily one Sunday, that she is really impressed with how Fr. Gerry is giving his homily. Unknowingly, our lives have been touched by Fr. Gerry through his sermons and homilies, which may have enlightened our minds and hearts to know our selves and our relationship to God. Father Gerry, wherever you are, our prayer are with you. On Juan Diegos tilma appeared an image of Mary exactly as she had appeared at the hill of Tepeyac. The miraculous event happened on December 12, 1531. Our Ladys appearance in Mexico is another testimony that she is indeed the mother of all humankind. She is able to communicate and extend her love and maternal care to all cultures and nations. Her love for us her children knows no bounds. Our Lady of Guadalupe became a powerful spiritual force in the history of Central and South America, for the image showed the compassion of a loving God for the native peoples who fell before the forces of the Spaniards. Pope Benedict XIV designated a feast for Our Lady of Guadalupe in 1754, placing the feast day on the same day as the last apparition to Juan Diego. By that time the popularity of the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe had grown tremendously and devotion to Mary had spread widely throughout the Spanish colonial empire. Thus, Benedict XIV named Our Lady of Guadalupe as the patron saint of New Spain. About 150 years later, in 1910, Our Lady of Guadalupe was named the patron saint of all Latin America under the title the Queen of Mexico and the Empress of the Americas. In 1999, the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe was designated all the countries of the Americans. A significant element of this feast is that, long before clergy and theologians thought about bringing the churchs traditional sacraments and devotions into the cultures of peoples who were being evangelized, the appearance of Our Lady of Guadalupe had encouraged the native cultures and peoples of the Americas.

According to tradition, the Blessed Mother appeared to a poor Indian named Juan Diego. Juan Diego, who was converted to Christianity only in his adulthood, was 57-year-old widower when he witnessed the apparition of Mary. He lived in a small town near Mexico City. It all happened on a Saturday morning, December 9, 1531, while he was on his way to a nearby village. He was walking by a hill called Tepeyac when he heard beautiful music like the warbling of birds. A radiant cloud appeared and within it a young Native American maiden dressed like an Aztec princess. The lady spoke to him in his own language and asked him to see the bishop of Mexico. The Blessed Virgin wanted a church to be built in her honor. Juan Diego, in obedience to the beautiful woman, went to the bishops residence and told him what the Blessed Mother wanted him to say. The bishop asked Juan Diego to return with a sign that it was indeed the Blessed Mother whom he had talked to.
