The impact of offshore wind
farms on the rotary wing industry
will be a featured topic during
Helitech. The future growth plans
of the wind farms will be the focus
of a session on September 28 with
the release of the European Wind
Energy Associations latest report.
Presentations from Bristow Heli-
copters and RAF Search and Rescue
Force will also be part of the ses-
sion. See feature story starting on
page 26.
LEO-III-HD Receives
EC135 Approval
Carl Zeiss Optronics has re-
ceived certication from Eurocopter
Germany for its LEO-III-HD on
the EC135. The Argentina Federal
Police have also chosen the LEO-
III-HD for the units new EC135.
Carl Zeiss Optronics will display
the LEO-III-HD at Stand 712.
AEM Makes European
Debut at Helitech
Helitech 2011 marks Kelowna,
Canada-based AEM Corp.s rst
foray into European helicopter
trade shows. The Northern Air-
borne Technology-licensed com-
pany is located at Stand 2004.

Helitech Stands Firm
Determined exhibitors buck the global trend.

Britains biannual celebration of all things rotary wing swings into action at the
famous Duxford aerodrome on Tuesday. Helitech celebrates its 25th anniver-
sary in difcult times. However back in 1986, in Aberdeen, you may recall the
helicopter industrys extreme sensitivity to economic ebb and ow. It is a testa-
ment to its maturityand particularly to the improved understanding of the
rotorcrafts myriad capabilitiesthat as a community we can face the current
turmoil with a great deal more condence. The fact that some 40 companies are
exhibiting for the rst time is testament to that spirit. Here are some highlights
to look out for over the three-day event.

Over the last few months Ive had the
pleasure of setting the program and
recruiting speakers for the Helitech
Conference on behalf of Reed Exhibi-
tions. This conference is a landmark
one as it occurs during the 25th an-
niversary of the Helitech exhibition,
which is held biennially at the Im-
perial War Museum Duxford, Cam-
bridgeshire, in the UK.
At the beginning of the process
my Reed colleagues and I set out to
formulate a conference that would
represent the beginning of an event
that would become an informative
and useful addition to the calendar of
everyone connected with rotorcraft,
from owners and operations through
to manufacturers and systems de-
signers. The British Helicopter Asso-
ciation and Reed Exhibitions signed
a two-year agreement earlier in the
year that ensures the BHAs participa-
tion in Helitech in 2011 and 2013.
This partnership has also resulted in
the involvement in this years confer-
ence of the European Helicopter As-
sociation (EHA) and European Avia-
tion Safety Agency (EASA).
To further strengthen Helitechs
planning for the future Reeds He-
litech Exhibition manager, Brandon
Ward, initiated the establishment of
Helitechs rst Steering Committee.
The committees goal is to ensure
that the Helitech event in its entire-
ty continually evolves to meet the
needs and aspirations of the rotor-
craft industry. The committee of 13
includes representatives from four
main helicopter OEMsAgustaWest-
land, Bell Helicopter, Eurocopter and
Sikorskyas well as operators Bristow
Helicopters and Sloane Helicopters.
Other industry representatives in-
clude Rolls-Royce, Specialist Aviation
Services, L-3 Wescam and Hayward
Aviation Finance. The Helicopter
Club of Great Britain will also repre-
sent pilots and owners.
Returning to the conference, it was
decided that the offshore wind farm
industry represented one of the most
promising business growth sectors in
the coming years. The early involve-
ment of the European Wind Energy
Association gave the conference an
excellent and topical base on which
the rest of the program could be
built. Safety advice, R&D programs
and through those, progress made on
environmental issues are all subjects
that a cross section of delegates to
any conference now wish to see on
the agenda.
Blue light (emergency responder)
helicopter operations is also one that
is currently topical in the UK. The -
nances available to public service op-
erators are being stretched and hard
choices are having to be made in UK
policing generally, with the potential
for many ofcers to be made redun-
dant. The question of how a unied
National Police Air Support service
would work in the UK is being ad-
dressed during the conference, while
others will question whether this uni-
cation is far enough, and ask wheth-
er other emergency services should
also be included.
The objective of this conference
is not to stage a one-off event, but
to make it the starting point for the
growth of the conference into a high-
ly anticipated, valuable event for the
European helicopter community. For
that to happen, we need the active
participation of delegates and ideas
post-conference on how this should
develop.
As part of this process, the event
organizer Reed has established the
Steering Committee that will ensure
that not only the event itself, but also
the conference, delivers the format,
content and business opportunities
that those in the rotorcraft market
perceive that they require, be they
manufacturers, service providers, op-
erators or employees. Requirements
are ever-changing and with your sup-
port, that is what Helitech as an event
and conference hopes to deliver.
Finally, for those who have not vis-
ited the actual Imperial War Museum
at Duxford, the site for Helitech, I
strongly recommend it. The collection
of vintage aircraft is extensive and the
American Air museum hangar is de-
scribed as having the largest collec-
tion of American warbirds on display
outside the United States, including a
vintage B-17 Flying Fortress, B-24 Lib-
erator, B-25 Mitchell, P-47 Thunder-
bolt, and aircraft from the Cold War
era such as a B-52 Stratofortress, SR-71
Blackbird and F-4 Phantom.

Aerospace Optics (Stand 1709)
Fort Worth, Texas-based Aerospace Optics is showcasing its VIVISUN Electron-
ic Latch, which performs in a similar fashion to traditional magnetic hold-
ing or solenoid latching switches but in a much smaller mechanical package
and with 500,000-cycle reliability. It integrates an electronic latch circuit that
accepts discrete inputs and responds with conditioned outputs. The inputs
include Set, Reset and Toggle, which may be controlled locally or via remote
input. The VIVISUN Electronic Latch also has an internal blink feature and
allows a single switch to function mechanically as an alternate or momentary
action.
Aerospace Optics, which has a UK branch at Select Aerospace Technologies,
is also bringing its Pulse/Timer to Helitech. Just as with the Electronic Latch,
the Pulse/Timer brings additional electrical function internal to the traditional
VIVISUN illuminated push button switch. The Pulse/Timer is designed to de-
tect an electrical edge and produce a timed pulse output or delay. It has dual
independent channels supporting positive or negative signals or reciprocal
transitions such as weight on/off or wheels raise/lower. The Pulse/Timer also
utilizes the VIVISUN MFB body and can be combined with two traditional
7.5-amp switch poles. With these functions internal to the standard VIVISUN
MFB body, the design engineer has additional exibility to simplify packaging

Air Covers Ltd (Stand 1610)
Shropshire-based Air Covers is a specialist textile engineering company with a
background in aerospace projects. The company has military and civil experi-
ence in the tropics, the arctic, deserts and offshore. Its tted environmental
protective covers for helicopters are a result of hundreds of hours of design,
laser modeling, testing and material research. The covers control climatic im-
pacts and provide protection from icing, extreme heat, brownouts, offshore
salt spray, sandstorms and monsoons.
Operators want covers that ensure aircraft availability, take very little time to
t, will maintain their performance for years of hard use and will not damage
the aircraft, according to Air Covers. Some of the performance characteristics
notably heat mitigationare designed to be uniquely special, the company
says, adding that extensive research is carried out for each new design, work-
ing with each operator to describe the operational characteristics that might

Boise, Idaho-based Aviation

Police Aviation Shines
Law enforcement aviation

Airclaims is promoting its asset management services during Helitech. The company is currently working to gain
EASA approvals for aircraft health monitoring (asset assurance) for various helicopter classes. Airclaims provides
comprehensive independent asset management capabilities for the aviation industry, with assistance available for
aircraft ownership, maintenance, and/or management. A rst-time exhibitor to Helitech, the company is seeking to

Australian software developer, Avinet, returns to Helitech Duxford to showcase its cloud application known as Air
Maestro. Avinet is sharing its stand with SMS Aero, UK specialists in aviation consultancy and safety management
training, in a collaboration between industry partners. SMS Aero has built a system of safety management geared to
the real world.
Avinets cloud application, Air Maestro, is expected to attract keen interest at this years show, the company notes,
as increasing industry regulation means more operators are looking for help in managing safety and compliance.
Air Maestro offers an innovative means to run an SMS program designed around CAA and ICAO requirements. The
application also offers components of a Fatigue Risk Management System (FRMS), including the FAID algorithm

Blue Sky Network has introduced new developments in products and technologies, including the HawkEye 5 series
the link is to the dual mode solution, which tracks using both GSM and Iridium satellites. It will save money and im-
prove tracking among a number of features. The HawkEye PT is a personal tracker in use with a handful of helicopter
pilots right now. Its a handheld, portable satellite tracking and messaging device. Blue Sky Networks newest tech-

Concorde Battery Corp. (Stand 507)
West Covina, Calif.-based Concorde Battery Corp. has released a new Parasitic Load Tester Adaptor (PLTA) to measure
the parasitic load/drain on aircraft batteries when the master switch is off and the helicopter is inactive. The adaptor
is designed for use with a MS3509 style quick disconnect receptacle. Concorde engineered the PLTA in response to
concerns in the aviation community about the effect of parasitic loads/drains on battery capacity, state of charge,
airworthiness and battery life. Measuring parasitic load is done through connecting the PLTA between the battery
receptacle and the aircraft mating plug. The PLTA features a molded polypropylene body with separate test leads for
connection to a digital multimeter (DMM). Concorde PLTA, part number 4102, is rated for loads up to 10 amps and
is equipped with a 10-amp fuse. Instructions on how to measure parasitic load and calculate time to battery depletion
are provided in Instruction Manual, Aircraft Battery Parasitic Load Test Adapter, Document No. 5-0409. The manual

ing its new helicopter called the Guimbal Cabri G2. Bruno Guimbal, for-
merly the engineering director at Eurocopter, designed the Guimbal Cabri

For more than 14 years, Express Hi-fold Doors has manufactured the hi-fold door, which is used where a large door is
required in the agricultural, industrial or commercial industries. The company says that by far, the biggest sector is the

years that have the same benets as a hi-fold but the door opens in one piece using hydraulics.

Clovis, Calif.-based The Trend Group has inked an agreement with Guardian Mobility for gas turbine engine trend
monitoring (ETM). Operators use ETM to maintain engine performance and to prepare for overhauls. The partner-
ship will allow Guardian to add ETM to its ight data monitoring and communication services. Guardian Mobility
also recently acquired Alakai Technologies, expanding the companys safety management system (SMS) offering with

Revue Thommen (Stand 602)
Waldenburg, Switzerland-based Revue Thommen has introduced a smaller and lighter
HSL-800 helicopter searchlight for weight and power-restricted operations such as single-
engine aircraft in the U.S. law enforcement segment. The HSL-800 is in the development
stage with anticipated availability in the rst quarter of 2012.
Revue Thommen is also in the nal stages of production of its HSL-1600 helicopter
searchlight, with rst production deliveries scheduled for third quarter 2011. Accord-
ing to Walter Fischbach of Thommen, the searchlight has undergone extensive testing
and practical ight trials under the scrutiny of major European helicopter OEMs and
several large eet operators in the law enforcement discipline. Revue Thommen has also chosen Instrument Tech
of Addison, Texas to be an authorized service center in North America for the HSL series of Thommen helicopter
searchlights.

The S-76 series from Sikorsky Aircraft, long

operations, was initially certied in 1978.
Sikorsky has brought an S-76C++ to display
at its Helitech booth. Since its inception in
1979, the S-76 program has introduced six
variations including the S-76C++; models
that featured improvements over that span
included more powerful engines and an inlet
barrier lter for improved engine protection
and smoother airow.
The S-76D will perform an array of civil
missions including executive transport, off-
shore, EMS and multi-mission roles. With a
30-year legacy from the S-76 series, the S-76D is the next generation and continues to progress toward rst customer
deliveries in 2012. Among the S-76Ds features are all-composite, aw-tolerant main rotor blades; Thales integrated
avionics system and autopilot; optimized rotor system for quiet operation; active vibration control; Pratt & Whitney
Canada PW210S engines; and an optional rotor ice protection system (RIPS) for all-weather capability. Certication

Spectrolab of Sylmar, Calif. is bringing its new SpectroLink system to Helitech Duxford. SpectroLink will upgrade all
SX-16 Nightsun, SX-16 Nightsun IFCO, and SX-5 Starburst searchlights through an integrated linking system to the
searchlight, thermal imager, or video camera. Linking capabilities among the components are integrated by a closed
loop motor control.
SpectroLink uses digital encoders for precise positioning of the searchlight to camera. This eliminates any factory
install of components and does not depend on analog signals that can drift with time and temperature. Installation
of the SpectroLink system will not void the standard two-year warranty from Spectrolab.

Specialist Aviation Renews Kuwait Police Contract
Gloucestershire, England-based Specialist Aviation Services has extended its contract
with the Kuwait police to service four of the air wings helicopters. This follows Spe-
cialist Aviations signing with Luxembourg Air Rescue to provide maintenance for six
MD902 Explorers. The company has also placed three Explorers into service for Essex
Air Ambulance, Lincolnshire & Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance and Trinity House,
a general lighthouse authority (GLA) for England, Wales, the Channel Islands and

This aerospace consortium from the Lorraine region of
northeast France is bringing a prototype kit, developed
by Heli Air Design, to meet new EASA/FAR 27 safety crite-
ria. Powered by a 160-shp Solar T62 engine, the Helineo
Mk1 has a maximum takeoff weight of 1,543 lbs, includ-
ing a 728-lb payload. First ight is expected soon and the
company plans to achieve nal certication by 2013.

Group member AEM has opened a new purpose-built facility at nearby Stansted Airport for aircraft re extinguisher
repair and overhaul. Capabilities include all APU, engine re and portable re extinguishers carried aboard aircraft.
Air Harrods (Stand 1206)
The Stansted Airport-based luxury operator has seen increased demand for all the types on its AOC; the Sikorsky S-76,
S-92 and AgustaWestland AW109. Sales & Marketing Director Will Holroyd is particularly pleased with the success
of the S-92. With space to seat sixteen comfortably, making it the largest VIP helicopter available for charter in the
UK, actual hours own have increased by over 50 percent. In other news, Eurocopters EC155 has been added to Air

In descending order of brand numbers, AgustaWestland is bring-

AgustaWestland is investing 300 million Zloty ($96 million) to

rior to those produced by Bell Helicopter, which are based on a 45-year-old design. A set also costs around $7,500, as

Avidyne Corp. has a new plug-and-play, panel-mounted FMS/GPS/nav/com that provides touch-screen user interface

Avinet & SMS Aero (Stand 1406)
Australian software company Avinet is building a customer base for its Air Maestro online safety application. Launched
six years ago, Air Maestro, which is based in the cloud, helps operators to effectively run a safety management system
(SMS). CEO Mike Mulvihill explains, Cloud offers secure Internet-based computing where resources, software and
information are shared and provided to computers and other devices on demand, an everyday utility. It is a hot trend
in the IT world offering big benets to businesses. Adelaide-based Avinet developed Air Maestro six years ago for a
customer who wanted a reliable and cost-effective SMS. Now Mulvihill claims more than 5,000 users based around
the world. On average, someone logs on every 22 seconds. Being based in the cloud means operators can reduce
costs, improve reliability, increase mobility and eliminate messy paper trails.
Bayards Aluminum (Stand 1806)
Dutch manufacturer Bayards can make you an aluminum helipad, ei-
ther to order or in kit form. The helipads can be installed on almost
any building or offshore construction. The assembly kits are complete-
ly bolted, eliminating the need for on-site drilling, welding or cutting,
special tools or heavy cranes. Bayards can also equip its helipads with
reghting (with DIFFS), lighting, heat tracing and refueling systems.
Blue Sky Network (Stand 1710)
Blue Sky Network has developed some cool new tracking devices for the helicopter community, including the Hawk-
Eye 5 series, utilizing both GSM and Iridium satellites, and the HawkEye PT, a handheld personal satellite tracking and
messaging device. It has also revamped its SkyRouter 2 tracking portal to offer improved map rendering, management
and reporting tools, and will have it up and running at the booth.
Concorde Battery Corporation (Stand 507)
Concorde has released a new Parasitic Load Tester Adaptor (PLTA) that measures the parasitic load/drain on aircraft
batteries when the master switch is off and the aircraft is inactive. The adaptor is designed to mate with a MS3509
style quick disconnect receptacle. This innovative PLTA was conceived in response to aviation community concerns
about the effect of parasitic impact on battery capacity, state of charge, airworthiness and battery life.
Cotsworld Helicopter Centre
(Stand 905, static display)
Cotsworld Helicopter Centre (Stand 905, static display) is introduc-
ing a new helicopter known as the Guimbal Cabri G2. A newcomer,
the neat G2 two-seater was designed by Bruno Guimbal, a former
senior engineer at Eurocopter. The Cabri meets EASA CS-27 and
FAR-27 regulations, requiring smaller rotorcraft (up to 3,175 kg) to
absorb an accident impact without causing signicant injury to oc-
cupants. The high-inertia, three-blade head is said to make autorotations easy to perform and demonstrate, Flight
instructor Philippe Colonge says, adding that it is a remarkably accomplished helicopter.
DART Aerospace (Stand 611)
DART Aerospace is showing its certied Vertical Reference Door kit for older Bell 204, 205, 210, 212, 214 & 412 aircraft.
DARTs Vertical Reference Door improves visibility and allows the pilot to maneuver with precision when conducting
vertical reference work such as long-line or reghting. The kit comes complete with sheet metal door components,
bubble window, wiring harness and a latching mechanism.
DST Control (Stand 303)
Saab has chosen the OTUS-U135 camera turret as an option on its medium range Skeldar helicopter UAV. With a rotor
diameter of 4.7 meters, a maximum take-off weight of 200 kg and a maximum endurance (with the gimbal tted) of up
to 7.5 hours, it is fully autonomous, controlled by high-level-commands such as Point and Fly and Point and Look,
and designed for a range of land, maritime and civil applications.
Enterprise Control Systems (Stand 809)
ECS supplies Frances Gendarmerie with CODFM (coded orthogonal frequency division multiplexing) downlink equip-
ment. It has most recently sold the police service its latest Handyview portable COFDM receiver: a fully integrated
unit that provides instantaneous monitoring of COFDM modulated signals. The downlink equipment is tted to the
Gendarmeries eet of Eurocopter EC135s.
Eurocopter
As well as a bevy of beauties on the static park, Eurocopter will
have the new EC145T2 at its booth. Unveiled earlier this year
during Heli-Expo, the T2 features new Turbomeca Arriel 2E en-
gines, advanced cockpit design with the latest avionics, a four-
axis autopilot and a Fenestron tail rotor. First deliveries are ex-
pected in 2013. Its UK subsidiary (Chalet 5) is undergoing some
organizational changesexpect an announcement at the show.
Eurocopter is also hosting the European Helicopter Safety Team
(EHEST), which has identied common themes from analyzing more than 300 European accidents that took place be-
tween 2000 and 2005. The teams report is available on the EASA website.
JR Technology (Stand 610)
JR Technology will showcase the latest additions to its range of composite test and repair products. The XY Plotter is
an NDT automatic tap tester, used for detecting aws in composite and bonded structures. And a lightweight M50-P
moisture meter is designed to conform to the IP67 requirement, can be adjusted to compensate for different material
densities and will measure depths up to 40 mm.
Revue Thommen (Stand 602)
Swiss optics company Revue Thommen is launching its HSL-800 searchlight during Helitech. Designed for weight and
power restricted applications such as single engine operations in the U.S. law enforcement sector, the HSL-800s core is
based on the existing HSL-1600 and users will discover familiar performance characteristics. Says company spokesman
Walter Fischbach, like its 1600 cousin, HSL-800 components are integrated within the searchlight itself, simplifying
installation and operation and dramatically reducing all-up weight for such payload-critical aircraft.
Revue Thommen is also about to deliver its rst production HSL-1600. Fischbach says that the larger searchlight, has
undergone extensive testing and practical ight trials (by) European OEMs and law enforcement operatorsand passed
with ying colors.

Scandinavian Avionics A/S (Stand 1520)
Scandinavian Avionics is set to provide complete TETRA radio terminal upgrades to the Norwegian Ministry of Jus-
tice and Police, to be tted on a signicant number of helicopters of seven different types. Program manager Michael
Truelsen says the company is looking forward to starting the upgrade process and contributing to making the Nor-
wegian re brigades, police and health agencies even more effective in the future. Scandinavian Avionics will provide
TETRA radio terminals and associated equipment from Cobham Antenna Systems. In addition, Scandinavian Avionics
will provide installation and integration of the equipment as well as EASA certication, testing and technical support
of the system.
Sikorsky Aircraft
Sikorsky is bringing an S-76C++ , by way of introduction to its next
model, the S-76D. The D will have all-composite, aw-tolerant
main rotor blades; an advanced Thales avionics system and inte-
grated autopilot; a quiet rotor system; active vibration control;
Pratt & Whitney Canada PW210S engines and, for all-weather
operations, an optional rotor ice protection system (RIPS).
Civil applications such as executive transport, offshore energy and EMS are in the corporations sights. First deliveries
are expected in 2013. Form an orderly queue at the static park.
Sloane Helicopters (Stand 1513, Chalet 2, static display)
With certication due in the next few weeks, the turbine-powered Robinson R66 has already stirred a lot of interest in
the UK. Sloane Helicopters is showing off its sales demonstrator, together with the sleek AW109 Grand New.
Stack (Stand 1812)
Using technology originally developed for high-end motorsports, Stack will demonstrate new ranges of digital video
and multi-function event recorders, as well as an innovative new passive tire pressure and temperature monitor. Stacks
battery-less TPMS uses Surface Acoustic Wave technology and can operate at very high temperaturesmore than 150
degrees Cwithout affecting sensor life.
TLC Handling (Stand 1502, static display)
The TLC Helilift helicopter ground handling unit offers single-person operation with full control and built in safety
features. It reduces manpower and operating costs, and improves response times, according to TLC. Its universal tting
suits all makes and models of skid-mounted helicopters. It also features a powerful 28v battery with built-in APU.
Turbomeca (Stand 1503)
Exhibiting with its UK subsidiary and Sagem, the French en-
gine OEM will showcase the new power-saving Ardiden 3 gas
turbine, which is aimed at the 6 to 8-ton weight range. It has
been selected for the AC352 (Chinese EC175) and Russian
Helicopters Kamov Ka-62. Turbomeca UK will announce new
helicopter engine support services at its Fareham, Hampshire
base.
Some 200 companies are exhibiting at Helitech this
year, about the same number as in 2009. Organizers Reed
also anticipate similar visitor numbers to 2009, when some 4,000 from 60 countries attended.

he business opportunities
for global helicopter op-
erators in supporting the
offshore wind farm power
generation market, especially within
Europe, are set to expand rapidly
over the next couple of decades. In
fact the growth has already begun
and there are now plans for offshore
farms containing over 1,000 turbines
covering a large area of sea.
Within the United Kingdom, Bond
Air Services has already been award-
ed the rst helicopter contract to ser-
vice the Greater Gabbard wind farm
in the North Sea and competitor Bris-
tow has also announced its intent to
compete in Europe with a range of
exible services. Danish helicopter
operator UniFly services the Horns
Rev I and II wind farms off the Dan-
ish coast transporting technicians for
maintenance and occasionally types
of cargo, especially when the sea is
to rough for boat transits. Back in
2002, UniFly was awarded a contract
for hoist operations at the Horns Rev
1 offshore wind farm. UniFly uses
the Eurocopter EC135 and in 2009
Bond Air Services also bought one of
the same aircraft to serve the Greater
Gabbard eld. UniFly claims to have
been the rst helicopter operator
to begin hoisting people onto wind
turbines. In 2009, DONG Energy
brought its Horns Rev wind farm on-

line with a mere 91 turbines (generating 2.3MW each), yet at the
time was the largest wind farm in the world. Siemens supplied the
turbines, which stand 114.5 meters tall with another 30-40 meters
under the surface of the sea. The diameter of each rotor is 93 meters
and the area covered by the eld is around 35km.
The power created by wind energy in Europe is set to triple by
2020, according the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA)
Pure Power report published in July. The EWEAs policy director, Jus-
tin Wilkes, revealed that 194 billion will be invested in European
onshore and offshore wind farms in this decade.
Later this year the European Union will be publishing its long-
term prediction for wind energy, the European Commissions En-
ergy Roadmap 2050. Europe has grasped wind energy, with many
countries seeing it as a green alternative to fossil fuel red power
stations.
According to the gures wind power produced electricity should
increase from 182 Terawatt hours (TWh) or 5.5 percent of the total
EU demand in 2010, to 581 TWh or 15.7 percent of the total demand
in 2020. The prediction from the EWEA is that by 2020 the elec-

tricity production from wind energy
will be equivalent to the total electric-
ity consumption of all households in
France, Germany, Poland, Spain and
the United Kingdom together.
Denmark is leading in terms over-
all wind power provision for its own
energy needs, not only in the EU but
worldwide, meeting 26 percent of its
energy consumption in 2010. Spain
and Portugal derive around 15 per-
cent of their national requirements
from wind energy with Germany
achieving 8 percent and the UK only
3.7 percent.
In fact, by 2030, 28 percent of the
total European requirement (1,154
TWh) would be generated through
wind power, which the EWEA says
is more than the 241 million private
households are expected to need that
same year. Today the gure is closer
to 50 million households, indicating
a huge increase in just under two de-
cades.
In offshore terms, 2.9 GW was in-
stalled at the end of 2010 accounting
for 3.5 percent of installed EU wind
energy, a rise from 2.7 percent in
2009 and representing 9.5 percent of
new annual capacity.
In 2010 offshore wind accounted
for 20.5 percent (2.6 billion) of the
total EU investment generating 883
MW.
Although Denmark has been the
leader in offshore wind power devel-
opment, in 2010 it was overtaken by
the United Kingdom, which exceeded
a capacity of 1 GW.
Eight EU countries together with
Norway now have installed offshore
capacity.
Research and development into
generator capacity and the increase
in size of the wind turbine rotors
over the last two decades have been
responsible for a relatively dramatic
growth in average turbine capacity.
In 1991 it was around 200kW on-
shore and 450 kW offshore in 1991.
By 2010 this had risen more than
1,700 kW onshore and 2,800 kW off-
shore.
During the late summer the EWEA
released its key trends and statistics
review for the rst half of 2011 re-
garding offshore installations. These
showed a 4.5 percent increase in in-
stallations compared with the rst
half in 2010, with 101 offshore wind
turbines being installed that could
generate around 348.1 MW. These
sites belonged to the UK, Germany
and Norway. In total 11 offshore
wind farms are under construction
and when nished will supply 2,844
MW.
The number crunching statistics
alone make for impressive reading:
There were 1,247 offshore wind tur-
bines on June 30 in 49 wind farms
over nine different national areas.
The turbine wind farms were in the
following areas: Greater Gabbard
and Walney 1 in the UK; Baltic 1 and
BARD Offshore 1 in Germany; and
the fourth prototype oating turbine
in Bergen, Norway,
129 foundations were installed in
seven offshore areas: Thornton Bank
2 in Belgium; Walney 2, lincs, Lon-
don Array and Sheringham Shoal in
the UK; BARD 1 in Germany and the
Norwegian oating prototype,
108 turbines were installed, and
inally, preliminary work was car-
ried out at Gwynt y Mor and Teesside
in the UK; Raahe and Thornton Bank
3 in Belgium.
There are two main turbine manu-
facturers supplying wind turbines to
this EU area. By far the largest is Sie-
mens with an 84 percent share of the

Financing in this sector is becoming
stronger. Germanys largest offshore
nd farm project looks to have secured
the 1.2 billion investment it requires
when construction begins in 2013.
The Meerwind Sr and Meerwind
Ost offshore wind farms, owned by
German company WindMW, will be
sited in the German Bight around
23km north of Helgoland island.
With 80 wind turbines, the Meerwind
site is expected to generate around
288 MW. Power will be fed into an
internal transformer platform sited
within the wind farm, which will in
turn be connected to the German na-
tional grid. The site will be supported
and maintained from nearby Helgo-
land and construction is expected to
begin within the next two years and
completed by the end of 2013.
EWEA says the trends are good for
offshore wind farm nancing. Banks
are now more willing to look at off-
shore wind power generation in a new
light, and there have been positive
moves forward in Germany, Denmark
and in the UK. However, there is a -
nal cautionary word from Christian
Kjaer, chief executive ofcer of EWEA:
While I see several positive trends for
the European offshore wind power in-
dustry, we are not home and dry yet,
he says. The sector is coming out of
the nancial crisis but is still facing
a potential worsening of the general
economic crisis. The number of banks
providing capital for offshore wind
farm investments is steadily growing,
although there is a continued need
for attracting an increasing number
of large institutional investors to off-
shore wind farmspresently the larg-
est construction projects going on in
Europe.

Organizers: Show Poised to Do Very Well

Helitech Duxford organizers Reed Exhibitions is hoping for at least the same
number of visitors to this years tradeshow, with projections to go above the
4,000 attendees from the 2009 version of the biannual event.
If we can deliver even better than what we did in 09, great, but if were tracking
about the same, well do very well, Brandon Ward, exhibition director, told Rotor &
Wing on Monday afternoon. The show opened Tuesday morning with crowds lin-

Partner on Training
Safran Group division Tur-
bomeca (Stand 1503) has inked a
long-term agreement with Bristow
Academy to supply engine mainte-
nance training. Under the partner-
ship, Bristow Academy will have
the ability to train pilots and me-
chanics as part of the Turbomeca
training network.
The engine maker is also ex-
panding its reach in the UK, with
contracts in place to support the
Ministry of Defence and a number
of civil EMS and police operators.
The UK eet of Turbomeca engines
stands at around 750 in service on
around 600 helicopters.
Bristow Academy can be found
at Stand 1410 during Helitech,
with Bristow Helicopters on dis-
play at Chalet 9.
Rusada Becomes
Eurocopter Supplier
Eurocopter (Stand 906, Chalet
5) has reached a preferred supplier
agreement with Rusada (Stand
1412) for its Envision software
system. The partnership involves
Eurocopter Group to market and
distribute Envision for mainte-
nance, eet management, airwor-
thiness management and other
services.

Gama Engineering (Stand 1619), a
Gama Group company that is mak-
ing its public debut during Helitech,
has secured an agreement to distribute
Cobhams HeliSAS autopilot and stabil-
ity augmentation system. The new divi-
sionwhich came together after Gama
Groups Lees Avionics acquired Mann
Aviation Group Engineeringis based
at Fairoaks Airport, near Heathrow.
The Engineering subsidiary has also
partnered with Garmin to offer the
G500H electronic ight instrument sys-
tem (EFIS) to European operators. De-
signed for VFR Part 27 helicopters, the
G500H is available for several models,
including the Bell 206 and 407, and Eu-
rocopter AS350B2/B3 and EC130B.
Gama Engineering is a dealer for
many equipment suppliers, including
Aircell, DPI Labs, Flight Display Sys-
tems, Garmin, Honeywell, L-3, Rock-
well Collins and Universal. HeliSAS is
available for retrot on several types,
including the Bell 206B/L and 407,
and Eurocopter AS350.
In addition to displaying an AW189
mock-up, AgustaWestland (Chalet 2,
2B) is reporting a handful of sales and
deliveries at Helitech Duxford. The
manufacturer has received an order
from Abu Dhabi-based Falcon Aviation
Services (FAS) for two AS169s and one
GrandNew. In a separate order, Blueway
AS, an offshore operator based in Nor-
way, has purchased another AW139.
The manufacturer has also delivered a
GrandNew to Societe FCL, which will
use the helicopter for private and char-
ter services from its base in Paris.

Canadian MRO Vector Aero-
space Helicopter Services-North
America is targeting the European
market by exhibiting at Stand 410
during Helitech Duxford. The com-
pany is highlighting the services
available through its Fleetlands
operation, which is based in Gos-
port, Hampshire. The location has
provided MRO for UK Ministry of
Defence helicopters, including the
Boeing Chinook and AgustaWest-
land Lynx and Sea King. Fleet-
lands, a designated overhaul facil-
ity (DOF) for the Pratt & Whitney
Canada PW307A, 308A and
308C, also provides Rolls-Royce
Model 250 repairs.
SAS Wins MD902
Maintenance Contract
Luxembourg Air Rescue (LAR)
has selected Specialist Avia-
tion Services to provide main-
tenance support for its eet of
ve MD902s, and a sixth one in
operation with the Luxembourg
Police. The contract calls for line
maintenance to take place at LAR
facilities at Gloucestershire Air-
port, as well as SAS division ESC
in Belgium. With the new con-
tract, SAS now provides mainte-
nance for more than 25 MD902s.
Specialist Aviation Services is the
parent company of Police Avia-
tion Services and Medical Aviation
Services.
Donaldson Gains Euro-
pean AW119 Approval
EASA has granted a supple-
mental type certicate (STC) to
Donaldson Aerospace & Defense to
install its inlet barrier lter (IBF)
on the AgustaWestland AW119
and AW119Ke. The lter helps
to prevent engine damage in any
environment, including land and
sea-based operations. Donaldsons
display at Helitech can be found at
Stand 1916.

we do post-show surveys. That gives
us a huge amount of data to actually
speak to people directly. [We] tried to
get a cross section of OEMs, engine
manufacturers, airframers, operators,
Tier 2 suppliers and also from the visi-
tor point of view.
The group is made up of people
who dont normally interact with
each other in the same room, so its
really interesting to hear different
points of view, and its really valuable
for them to chat with some of their
peers, he added.
This is the rst time that Reed Exhi-
bitions has taken on the conference by
itself, as third-party suppliers were in-
volved in past iterations.
We got [Rotor & Wing Military Ed-
itor] Andrew Drwiega and CMS Stra-
tegic to help us put it together. For
me, having [Chief Constable] Alex
Marshall from Hampshire Constabu-
larywhos leading the UK National
Police Air Supportinvolved in the
conference is fantastic.
Ward also noted another impor-
tant speaker, Dr. Vittorio Morassi,
chairman of the European Helicop-
ter Association.
Also, to be fair, it wouldnt be
possible if Bell hadnt sponsored us,
because theyve effectively helped us
get it all together, Ward said, adding
that the conference is free to attend-
ees this year.
But why did Reed decide to take over
the conference entirely this time?
We always try to improve the show
every time we do it, Ward explained.
Theres a few things on the list that
both visitors and exhibitors have said
theyd like to see improvedadding
more content into the show [is one
of them]. Its great to come in and see
the exhibits and displays, but talking
about industry issues, what does the
future hold? Its just given the show
that extra edge now.
Ward added: We dont want it to
become a Farnborough or a Paris Air
Show, where at 2 p.m. nobody can
have a meeting because you cant hear
yourself talk, but I think something to
add that element of enjoyment. For
our 25th year, were doing a party for
exhibitors, which we always do, and
weve got a few nice surprises thrown in
there as well.

Government orders for helicopters
in the homeland security, parapublic
and emergency medical services (EMS)
sectors are offsetting the downturn in
corporate business orders, Olivier Mi-
chalon, vice president of customers
for Europe and Central Asia, told Ro-
tor & Wing on Wednesday morning at
Helitech. He is responsible for coun-
try markets that stretch from western
Ireland to the Pacic.
Eurocopter has ve subsidiaries
within that region: UK, Spain, Roma-
nia, Russia and Kazakhstan.
The further east you go, the more
those countries are looking to replicate
the West in terms of modern, govern-
ment service and parapublic helicop-
ters, he said. The countries around
the Caspian Sea have newfound wealth
from oil, gas and other minerals, and
have ambition to modernize. Countries
such as Kazakhstanve times the size
of France with a population of only 15
millionrequire a modern helicopter
EMS operation. And although the coun-
try is close to Russia, it is also at the in-
ternational crossroads between east and
west and wants to increase its stature.
Kazakhstan signed an agreement
with Eurocopter in October 2010 to
establish a joint venture that will as-
semble EC145s in the country, includ-
ing the long-term purchase of up to 45
helicopters over a six-year period.
Discussions with Russian authori-
ties on all levels are also progressing,

PremiAir Showcases
Sikorsky VIP Variant
Charter and management
company PremiAir (Stand 812) is
using a Sikorsky S-76A+ during
Helitech to display its various ser-
vices available to the VIP market.
The S-76A+ is set up at the static
display to give operators a sense
of the range of PremiAir offerings,
which include maintenance, police
air support and pilot training, in
addition to charter and manage-
ment. The companys support staff
includes more than 200 people
spread around six locations
Blackbushe, Denham, Oxford,
Biggin Hill, Farnborough and the
London Heliport. PremiAir is also
a Bell customer service facility
focusing on the Bell 222 and 430,
and a UK maintenance provider
for the Eurocopter AS355, AS365,
EC155 and AgustaWestland
AW109 Power and Grand.
Haughey Air Orders
Corporate AW139
AgustaWestland (Chalet 2) has re-
ceived an order for an AW139 from
Haughey Air Limited, which will use
the helicopter for VIP transport. Plans
call for the delivery to take place in
2012. Haughey Air supplies passenger
transport around the UK from its base
in Northern Ireland.

Shops Bell Parts
Among the highlights at Apple
Internationals Helitech display
is a series of Bell 206 parts,
which the company claims can
save operators up to 50 percent
over OEM replacement parts. The
FAA-certied Repair Station is set
up for a number of Bell-related
services, including brokering,
leasing and purchasing, avionics
repairs, component overhauls and
exchanges, interior refurbishments,
mechanical repairs and accesso-
ries. One of the featured offerings
during Helitech are new Tension
Torsion (TT) straps, which have
gained EASA approval and an
FAA supplemental type certicate
(STC). Apple International (Stand
1713) also works on the Bell 407.
AEM Repairs Aerial
Emergency Equipment
Ametek Aerospace and Defense
(Stand 912) unit AEM Limited has
rolled out a new re extinguisher
repair and overhaul service from
Stansted Airport. The company,
which has two other locations at
Ramsgate and Luton, also offers
ISO 9001 and AS/EN 9110-certi-
ed xes for the aircrafts APU,
engine re and lavatory. EASA-ap-
proved PMA and DER is available
through Ameron/MASS Systems,
another subsidiary of Ametek.
PAS Re-Ups Kuwait
Maintenance Support
Specialist Aviation Services
(Stand 2201) company Police
Aviation Services has renewed a
contract with the Ministry of Inte-
rior in Kuwait to support a eet of
two Eurocopter EC135s and two
AS365 Dauphins. The agreement
includes management of more
than 20 people, who will provide
maintenance, logistics and techni-
cal services from Kuwait City. PAS
serves various law enforcement
operators in the Gulf, as well as a
number of UK police units.
Apache Longbow Makes Helitech Appearance
A British Army Boeing WAH-64D
Apache Longbow visited Helitech
on Tuesday. Its crew had the expe-
rience of operating in Afghanistan
with five tours between them. The
aircraft, based at Wattisham Air-
field, Suffolkthe home of the Brit-
ish Armys 16 Air Assault Brigade
was not providing a flying display,
although its arrival and departure
drew visitors out of the show pavil-
ions to overlook the flight line. The
WAH-64 Longbow can be armed
with a maximum load of 16 Hellfire
missiles, 76 x 2.75 CRV-7 rockets
and 1,200 rounds of 30mm ammu-
nition for the chain gun.
British Army Apaches were re-
cently deployed on the Royal Na-
vys HMS Ocean to support NATOs
Unified Protector operation over
Libya. They have been deployed in
Afghanistan since 2007 in support
of Operation Herrick in Helmand

Lithuanias State Border Guard has
inked an agreement to receive Euro-
copter EC135 upgrades from Heli-One
(Stand 217, Chalet 4). The $2.85-million
contract, which is funded through the
EU Special Transit Scheme program, in-
volves adding communications equip-
ment to two helicopters. Under a sepa-
rate deal worth $2.4 million, Heli-One
is incorporating an L-3 Wescam electro-
optical infrared camera system into the
Royal Norwegian Air Force eet.

have yet to materialize due to the
value placed on Russias internal ro-
torcraft industry, which has recently
been reorganized under the Russian
Helicopter Federation.
Eurocopters footprint in the UK is
enlarging and the company feels well
positioned, due to its penetration of
the UK police helicopter sector, to
become involved in the new search
and rescue (SAR) competition, which
Michalon views as one of the major
projects in the coming years.
JRTL Introduces Evotis
NDT Instrument
JR Technology has unveiled
its latest nondestructive testing
(NDT) instrument during Helitech
known as Evotis. The tool detects
aws in composite structures,
with particular emphasis on
faults in large structures and in-
ner ply disbands on thick struc-
ture laminates. JR Technology
is also exhibiting a range of its
existing products at Stand 610,
including the Woodpecker NDT
inspection instrument, which fea-
tures an XY Plotter enhancement,
as well as the M50-P moisture/
cure condition meter and Type
HBC-4301 hot bonding control-
ler, which is used for repairs on
AgustaWestland Lynx, Merlin
and Sea King helicopters.
Quest Helicopters Plans
Project Q Unveiling
One of the more intriguing
announcements to come out of
Helitech is the anticipated launch
of a new series of civil helicopters
from Quest Helicopters. A division
of Quest Investments in Dubai,
Quest Helicopters is planning to
reveal the new helicopter fam-
ily during the Dubai Air Show
later this year. Project Q, which
gives the immediate impression
of a James Bond movie, is set for
launch in November, with market
entry projected in fourth quarter
2013. According to Quest, the
helicopters will conform to Ukrai-
nian, UAE and EASA standards.
Sky Helicopters Chooses
Wescam MX-10
L-3 Wescam is reporting a new
operator of its MX-10 multi-sen-
sor, multi-spectral imaging sys-
tem. Sky Helicopters of Spain will
use the MX-10which features
a 37-lb turret, vibration isolation
and stabilization package, soft-
ware suite and real-time image
enhancement for all sensorson
its eet of Eurocopter AS350s.

Air Harrods Adds EC155 Maintenance Support
Chiltern Eurocopter EC135s Top 10K Flight Hours
London-based Air Harrods (Stand
1206) is planning to incorporate the
Eurocopter EC155 into its Part 145
maintenance services at Stansted Air-
port. The location already supports
the Sikorsky S-76 and AgustaWestland
AW109 series. According to Steve Tier-
ney, ight operations director, charter
demand for the S-76 and AW109 has
increased in recent months. The com-
pany is also seeing increased usage of
the Sikorsky S-92, with ight hours ris-
ing by 50 percent since Harrods rst
began ying the variant in 2009.

H+S Becomes Russian Rolls-Royce M250 Center
H+S Aviation (Stand 1108) has des-
ignated Helicopter Service Com-
pany (HSC), which is part of Rus-
sian Helicopters, as an authorized
support center (ASC) for the Rolls-
Royce M250. Under the agreement,
H+S Aviation will support HSC
in offering line maintenance for
M250s in Russia. The BBA Aviation
Engine Repair and Overhaul divi-
sion is a member of the Rolls-Royce
M250 First network.
