Lab Report Notes I.

Objective: To demonstrate how multiple motions can be linked together to fill a cup with water II. Hypothesis An educated guess about what may happen in the experiment. Any form is acceptable, however an If then . format is a good way to show what needs to be changed to create a controlled experiment. III. Experiment Test your hypothesis here. A. Materials - Make a detailed list of the materials you need to perform the experiment. B. Procedure - Steps you will use to perform experiment. - Youre writing this for someone else to conduct the experiment. IV. Data This is where you include all your data, observations, or results Explain what your results mean using graphs, averages, and statistics. Show your work. (math formulas used) Compare, contrast, and summarize V. Conclusion Written in paragraph/essay form and should include why you did this experiment (restate the purpose/problem). Summarize your experiment and results. State whether your hypothesis was correct or incorrect using data to prove your case. Discussion: Discuss any errors as well as any patterns you see. Discuss ways to improve the experiment. You may want to form a new hypothesis based on your findings and suggestions for testing the new hypothesis in a different experiment. You may also make any predictions you would expect based on what you discovered.

Ms. Khan Andrew Padilla Pedro Martinez Physics Period 3 6/1/2011 Rube Goldberg Machine Speed Lab I. Objective: How long does it take for seven multiple motions that are linked together to fill a cup with water? II. Hypothesis: If I add connect seven motions in sequence, then will be able to fill a cup with water in less than 10 seconds. Experiment: A. Materials Wood Nails Hammer .5 inch thick flat plastic Duct tape Toy Car 4x24 inch Plexiglass Cup Magnet water

Thin Hose Dominoes Mouse Trap String Bottle of water Toy Barrel Spinner Piece of Metal Toothpick

B. Procedure 1. We built a frame out of wood to make a 2 story platform for the base 2. We nailed the .5 inch thick flat plastic to the wood to make the base 3. We set the piece of plexiglass inside the frame to make a ramp 4. We set a car on top of the ramp 5. We set a toy barrel beside the ramp so that it would roll after being hit by the toy car 6. We formed an array of Dominoes that are lined up that leads to the mousetrap near the barrel 7. We set the mousetrap down inside the frame 8. We set the spinner above the mousetrap but secured it to the ground 9. We connected a piece of string to one end of the spinner 10. We connected the other end of the string to the piece of metal

11. We placed the magnet on the second level 12. We used magnetism to stick the magnet to the piece of metal with the piece of plastic in between 13. We connected yet another piece of string to the other end of the piece of metal 14. We took a piece of wood and nailed an exterior pole to our frame 15. We took a water bottle and connected it to the thin hose 16. We connected the other end of the hose to the cup 17. We made sure to raise the hose so that water could not flow through unless the hose was lowered 18. We connected the toothpick to the end of the string that starts with the piece of metal 19. We placed the toothpick under the hose so that when it is pulled, the hose will come down and water will flow 20. We filled the bottle with water 21. We let the toy car roll down the ramp and we measured the times it took for each action to set off another action IV. Please refer to graphs attached to lab report. V. Conclusion: In order to see if how long it takes for 7 consecutive actions to fill up a cup with water, we had to set each object in the perfect position and time each trial. Some object set off the next motions quicker than others, but when added, the motions are less than 10 seconds. My hypothesis was correct because we were indeed able to fill a cup of water with 7 motions in under 10 minutes. Discussion In order to improve this experiment, fixed positions for objects may speed up the process while making it easier to replace the parts of the experiment. It took several dozen trials to make the whole experiment work just one time. Everything has to be in perfect position so that there is less chance of error. This is a very time consuming lab.
