THE MALTESE ISLANDS

Of the four islands that comprise the Maltese archipelago only Malta, Gozo and Comino are inhabited, Filfla is not. The archipelago lies virtually in the centre of the Mediterranean Sea, with Malta 93kms south of Sicily and 288kms north of Africa. Gibraltar is 1,826kms to the west and Tel Aviv 1,940kms to the east. The islands cover an area of 316 square kilometres (Malta 246, Gozo 67 and Comino 2.7) and had an estimated population of 417,617 in December 2010.
Gozo Gozo is smaller than its sister island Malta, and has a character quite distinct from it. The island is more rustic and certainly quieter than Malta. The countryside is greener and more spectacular. Flat-topped hills characterise the Gozitan landscape; its coast has rugged cliffs penetrated by steep valleys and picturesque bays. Gozo is 14.5kms long and 7.2kms at its widest point; its perimeter is 43kms long. Comino Comino is the smallest inhabited island in the archipelago. Neither cars nor any other noisy activity disturbs the peace of this picturesque little paradise. Comino has only one beach hotel, ideal for that away-from-it-all holiday and for the water sports enthusiast. The islands numerous bays and its crystal clear waters - like its famed Blue Lagoon (above) - make it the perfect choice for most kinds of water sports, especially snorkelling and diving. There is a regular ferry service to Malta and Gozo.
Malta The longest distance on the island of Malta, from the southeast to the northwest is some 27kms; its widest point, on an east-west axis, is 14.5kms. Malta has neither mountains nor rivers, but a series of low hills with terraced fields on their slopes. The coastline is well indented with harbours, bays, creeks, a few sandy beaches and rocky coves. The island has a 137kms long shoreline.

GENERAL INFORMATION
Accommodation The Maltese islands offer varied accommodation in hotels, aparthotels, tourist villages, guest houses, hostels and in self-catering farmhouses, villas and apartments. These are classified by the Malta Tourism Authority according to internationally accepted standards, and are obliged to exhibit their certificate confirming their designated classification. Airlines Air Malta is the national carrier. It has a fleet of Airbus A319 and A320 aircraft and flies to most European and North African capitals. Harbourair operates a scheduled seaplane service between the Grand Harbour in Valletta and Mgarr harbour in Gozo. It also operates ad hoc flights from Sliema Creek to Mgarr harbour. Other airlines, including low cost carriers (LCCs), fly scheduled and charter services to Malta. Baby requisites All well-known brands of milk formulae, nappies, medicines and other baby products are available from chemists and supermarkets. Beaches There are several sandy beaches, especially in the north of Malta; the most popular are Mellieha Bay, Gnejna Bay, Golden Bay, Ghajn Tuffieha, Paradise Bay and the perched beach in Qawra. St Georges Bay is the only sandy beach in the Sliema-St Julians area. In the south, the best sandy beach is Pretty Bay in Birzebbugia. Comino has two sandy beaches Sta Marija Bay and St Niklaw Bay. In Gozo, Ramla Bay (right) stands out for its beautiful red sand. Rock bathing is possible at almost all other beach sites. (See Beaches on the islands on page 4.) Casinos There are four casinos in Malta: the Dragonara Casino and The Casino at Portomaso in St Julians, the Casin di Venezia in Vittoriosa and the Oracle Casino at the Dolmen Resort Hotel in Qawra.

On Sundays, chemists open on a roster basis from 09:00 until 12:30 in Malta and from 07:30 until 11:00 in Gozo. Climate Maltas climate is influenced by the sea and is typically Mediterranean. Winters are mild with rare occurrences of cold weather brought by northerly and north-easterly winds from central Europe. Summers are hot, dry and very sunny. Sea breezes often cool daytime temperatures, but in spring and autumn a very hot wind from Africa occasionally brings unpleasantly high temperatures. This is the scirocco, which also affects Greece and Italy; in Malta, the air is usually drier because of the short sea track from the African coast. Annual rainfall is low and the length of the dry season in summer is longer than in southern Italy. The islands have a very sunny climate with a daily average of five to six hours of sunshine in mid-winter and more than 12 hours a day in summer.

Cuisine Italian cooking heavily influences the islands cuisine, although most restaurants also serve continental dishes. Local specialties include stewed rabbit, the national dish; bragjoli (beef olives); timpana (baked macaroni) and, in summer, lampuki pie (dorado). The national snack is the pastizzi, a small boat-shaped pastry filled with either ricotta cheese or mushy peas. Currency The unit of currency is the Euro (), divided into 100 cents (c). Coins 1c, 2c, 5c, 10c, 20c, 50c, 1, 2. Notes 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500. Driving is on the left. There is a speed limit of 80kph (50mph) on highways and 50kph (30mph) in urban areas. Electricity The electrical supply is 240 volts, single phase, 50 cycles. The 13ampere, three-pin rectangular sockets are used in Malta. Ferries The Gozo Channel Company operates daily Ro-Ro services from Cirkewwa in Malta to Mgarr in Gozo. It also runs trips from Sa Maison in Malta to Mgarr, for times call 21561622. United Co. operates a passenger-only shuttle service between Marfa and Comino and from Cirkewwa to Comino. The Comino Hotel has its own ferry linking the island with Gozo and Malta. The service operates from mid-March to mid-November. Flight enquiries Telephone 50043333. Health Travellers do not require certificates of vaccination or inoculation to enter the country. However, cholera vaccination certificates are required if arriving from an infected area. Yellow fever immunisation is needed for travellers arriving within six days of leaving an infected area. Language Maltese and English are the official languages of Malta. Maltese is a Semitic language similar to Levantine Arabic and written in the Roman script; the alphabet consists of 29 characters - 24 consonants and five vowels. Maltese also includes many words of Italian, French and English origin. Restaurants There are more than 1,500 eateries on the islands. The majority are modest but there are also some fine restaurants that serve ethnic, continental and fad cuisines. Time Malta is on Central European Time, one hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time in winter and two hours from the last Sunday in March until the last Sunday in October. The islands are six hours ahead of Eastern Standard Time in winter and seven ahead from the last Sunday in March until the last Sunday in October. Tipping: Taxi drivers do not expect a tip, but 10 per cent of the fare is customary; porters 30c to 40c per piece of luggage; restaurants unless a service charge has been added to the bill 10 per cent. Car park attendants expect to be tipped; the amount given is at ones discretion. Water Tap water is safe to drink, but may have an unpleasant taste and is somewhat hard. Local and imported bottled water is readily available.

ACCOMMODATION DEFINITIONS
Aparthotel an aparthotel means any building or interconnected buildings in which accommodation, ancillary services and amenities are provided for the public by professional management. An aparthotel provides studios and/or apartments suitably equipped with facilities and equipment for the conservation, preparation, cooking and consumption of food products. To qualify as an aparthotel the property may offer a mix of self-catering units and hotel style rooms. The self-catering units should form the majority of the total number of rooms. Guest house a guest house must be situated in a building or part of a building with an independent entrance. Rooms must have appropriate furniture and furnishings; however, sanitary facilities must be provided in the ratio of at least one bath/shower for every 10 persons or one bath/shower per floor. Hotel a hotel means any building or interconnected buildings in which accommodation, ancillary services and amenities are provided for the public by professional management. Accommodation is in rooms and/or suites and may also include self-catering units. Tourist village a tourist village must firstly meet the main definition of a hotel. A tourist village must be installed within an extensive and single land area, and designed in such a way so as not to exceed the height of a three-storey building. Tourist village accommodation must be provided in self-catering units or a mix of hotel type rooms. It must have a common entrance and reception, and provide opportunities for sports, recreation and other outdoor activities.
CLASSIFICATION CRITERIA
Hotels are classified from five to two star. Aparthotels and tourist villages are classified as two, three or four star. Guest houses and hostels are classified as comfort denoting the highest grade and standard, the lowest grade.
Five star fully air-conditioned accommodation; all rooms must have a private bath and shower, a telephone, a radio and TV set; 24-hour room service; a bar, restaurant and a coffee shop; a lounge area; dancing facilities; a swimming pool and sports facilities; the front office must be manned 24-hours; it must also offer a laundry, ironing and dry-cleaning service and have shops and a hairdresser. Four star fully air-conditioned accommodation; all rooms must have a private bath or shower, an internal or external telephone and radio; room service from breakfast to midnight; a bar, a restaurant and a lounge; a swimming pool or a private beach facility; the front office must be manned 24-hours; it must also offer a laundry, pressing and dry-cleaning service and have shops and a hairdresser. Three star all rooms must have a private bath or shower and an internal or external telephone; a bar, a restaurant and a lounge; the front office must be manned on a 24-hour basis; it must also offer a laundry, pressing and dry-cleaning. Two star all rooms must have a bath or shower; all rooms must have a wash-hand basin and a mirror plus an inter-telephone or similar facility; breakfast facilities must be available; the front office must be manned during the day, at night a porter service must be available.
USING THE DIRECTORY

Category each entry is prefixed by the propertys star rating; five stars being the highest and two stars the lowest.
Hotel name and address entries are listed alphabetically with their address, telephone and facsimile numbers plus their e-mail and internet addresses. Location and certification the following terminology is used to describe locations: Town built up area, some distance from the sea Town/seaside built up area with the sea and/or beach within easy walking distance Seaside facing the sea or a beach Beach on or very close to a beach Countryside rural area. If a property closes in winter, this is shown by the entry marked WC and the period of closure. The symbol denotes that the property is Eco Certified.
ECO CERTIFICATION
The Eco-Certification scheme, introduced in 2003, is based on environmental criteria set by the Malta Tourism Authority. It is awarded to tourism accommodation establishments that pass an environmental audit on a bi-annual basis. At present, 21 hotels on the islands are Eco Certified, and are entitled to exhibit the appropriate logo (left). The environmental criteria for Eco Certification are based on a European model that was developed in Spain.
QR CODES
In the directory you will see Quick Response (QR) codes alongside entries and on advertisements; these patterns of black and white squares, arranged on a square grid, can encode thousands of characters in almost any language. QR codes in this directory contain a link to an advertisers website. Quick Response codes can be read by a smartphone such as an Android, Blackberry or iPhone with a QR code reader installed. These apps may be downloaded from smartphone manufacturers portals, and most are free. Recommended are i-nigma, RedLaser and ScanLife. After downloading and installing the code reader application, launch it and point your smartphones camera at the QR code. The app will scan the code and automatically direct you to the relevant website.
Facilities the first entry shows the availability of timeshare and the number of units dedicated to vacation ownership, this is followed by the number of letting bedrooms, suites, no smoking rooms - denoted by the symbol - and apartments. The abbreviation CO is used for a propertys check-out time. The rest is self-explanatory. With regards facilities for the disabled, the information has been supplied by the hotels management and it is advisable to check before booking.
