The life of a
working actor
Manistees Toni Trucks featured in Breaking Dawn
and upcoming He Loves Me
By JODIE FLETCHER
Special to the
WeSt Shore ShopperS Guide
If a movie were being made about the
life of Toni Trucks, the first scene shot
might be her on the red carpet of the pre-
miere of Breaking Dawn.
Or perhaps it would be her shooting a
scene with Annette Bening and Antonio
Banderas on the set of He Loves Me.
Thats how it often works in film and
television, Trucks points out.
When you think about your favorite
movie, she said, and then you think
about the ending scene where they finally
kiss and they fell in love and it was the
best thing ever and then you say, you
know what, they did that scene the first
day that they ever filmed and they had
never met each other.
Thats good acting, where you have to
fall in love with somebody, or you have to
go to their funeral before you ever fall in
love with them. Thats really doing your
homework.
So in this film, the actress playing
Trucks might have first asked to portray
someone who has just completed two
major motion pictures. But a lot of hard
work brought both of them to that point.
A LITTLE EXPOSITION
From a young age, Trucks began
embracing every opportunity Manistee
had to offer.
And the community embraced her as
well.
What Im doing sounds very glamor-
ous when youre far away from it, but I
can honestly say that I feel 100 percent
that I am a product of Manistee, Trucks
said. And I say that because the people,
the community of Manistee were always
telling me yes. They were always saying
yes, you can do this. Yes, we believe in
you, we support you.
So Trucks took advantage of every
chance to do what she loved.
I exhausted my opportunities in
Manistee, she said. I did every dance
class, I did every play at the Ramsdell,
I choreographed and helped out at the
high school and starred in the plays there.
I was always just trying to find a way
to be more until I couldnt do anymore.
And then the community said, OK, go to
Interlochen, and I got a scholarship and
the community helped me do that.
So I really think that Manistee is lov-
ing and there are people and institutions
in Manistee that are telling young people
yes, you can do it. And you have to look
for those people and those avenues.

Trucks finished high
school at Interlochen Arts
Academy and then chose
to go to the University of
Michigan after auditioning
for about a dozen programs
across the country.
They only accepted
10 girls and 10 boys each
year, Trucks said of the
prestigious musical theater
program. I was thrilled
to get in and were a
Michigan family. My dad is
an alum and so it was kind
of perfect.
She also spent a year in
London studying theater
and upon graduation in
2003, moved to New York
City to pursue her career
and had an agent within a
week.
Trucks credits this
stroke of fortune to the
preparation she received at
U of M and luck.
I was very lucky, she
said. I try to do my best
to encourage young artists
to go to school and just
because youre so prepared.
... Michigans musical the-
ater department prepared
us so wonderfully for the
business aspect of it.
HER FAVORITE
MOMENT
Trucks spent the next
two and a half years doing
regional theater and com-
mitting herself to the goal
of doing one new thing a
year. It could be anything
work in a new theater,
try a different type of role.
When I auditioned for
Barbershop, I thought
that was my one new
thing, she said. I was like,
oh I did a television audi-
tion, isnt that neat? And
then all of a sudden I did a
screen test and I was like,
OK thats two new things.
Then all the sudden I
booked a television show
and my mind was blown
because I was doing the-
ater, I was doing regional
theater I wasnt even
doing Broadway ... and
all the sudden it was like,
heres a television show
on Showtime, you are the
female lead, theres no
pilot, you are definitely
doing 10 episodes, you
have to move to L.A. and
your life is different now
forever.
This, she said, ranks as
her favorite moment in a
career that has featured a
lot of great moments.
Ive had so many
phone calls to my mom and
dad where weve just been
jumping up and down and
screaming, Trucks said.
I have so many memories
like that. I think probably
booking my first televi-
sion show was a really big
milestone for me because
I wanted to do film and
television, but I didnt have
any timeline for that.
That phone call to her
mom, she said, is a particu-
larly great memory.
We just screamed,
we jumped up and down.
I dont think I could take
the smile off my face,
Trucks said. I just knew
that things would be dif-
ferent. I knew it wouldnt
be easy, I still had so many
ups and downs. I was like,
will I ever work again? I
have that moment right
now, Im like will I ever
work again, or is this it?
And you just keep going on
faith.
But that was a really
special moment. We were
just all so excited.
LIFE OF A
WORKING
ACTOR
The results of an actors
work are on view for every-
one, however the life of a
working actor is not often
about red carpet appear-
ances and seeing your face
on the big or small screens.
You must be able to
accept perpetual uncer-
tainty and I think thats
the thing that ultimately
separates people who do
it for a long time, Trucks
said. Its not good or bad,
its just, do I want to be
nervous about being able to
pay this or that bill or do I
want to know where I want
to be in a month? Because
I am sitting here not know-
ing where Im going to be
in a month, and thats OK
with me.
I could be here, I could
be in Bulgaria, I could be
anywhere. And you just
have to be able to change
on the drop of a dime, and
for lots of people, thats too
unsettling. ... If youre the
biggest star in the world,
jobs end, TV shows end,
movies end, if you do a
play, it has a run. It ends.
As a working actor,
Trucks said shes forever
returning to square one.
So Ive just finished
two major motion pictures
and Im back to square
one, she said. Im audi-
tioning again. Thats my
reality, and thats OK.
The work itself is often
less glamorous than the
end result, especially in
film and television. Trucks
said she thinks those who
have never seen a movie
being made or a TV show
being taped would find the
whole process interesting.
Theyd be surprised at
how much sitting around
you have, just because it
takes a lot of time to set
up shots, it takes a lot of
time to do the lighting,
she said. I think everyone
in their lifetime should go
watch a taping of anything
... just to see how it is.
RECENT WORK
Trucks was at an out-
door plaza in Los Angeles
when she got the call
that shed landed a role
in the fourth part of the
Twilight movies.
I was jumping up and
down and I was so excit-
ed, she said of learning
shed been cast as Mary in
Breaking Dawn. I made
a complete fool of myself,
Im sure.
The hardest part came
in the next month, when
she was sworn to secrecy
at risk of losing her new
job. But finally, the day
came when the cast was
announced to the press and
Trucks began the adjust-
ment of being a part of the
Twilight phenomenon.
The whole franchise of
Twilight is so enormous
and its definitely been an
adjustment getting used to
all the attention, she said.
Its just so big, its really
hard to fathom when you
see it. Actually being on
the carpet and seeing all
the screaming people who
have been sleeping outside
of the theater for a week
thousands of people sleep-
ing outside, they called it
tent city just to catch a
glimpse of the red carpet
was just insane.
She also just completed
a movie called He Loves
Me, which was written by
Zoe Kazan (granddaughter
of Academy Award winner
Elia Kazan) and stars Paul
Dano, Antonio Banderas,
Deborah Ann Woll and
Annette Bening.
And now, in this life
of perpetual uncertaintly,
shes back to square one
and looking for her next
role.
Besides being her job,
Trucks speaks passionately
about the importance of
film and television.
I think that film and
television and YouTube
and all these avenues
we have but film in
particular levels the
playing field for people,
Trucks said. We all start
out, were all seeing the
same story and we take
adventures together and
as audience members, we
are always trying to under-
stand otherwise you
wouldnt enjoy going to the
movies. Youre always try-
ing to understand someone
elses perspective. ...
Thats the same thing
with Twilight. All these
young girls are putting
themselves in Bellas shoes
and theyre experiencing
this adventure and I think
we just learn and become
so much more tolerant of
people when we are trying
to see things from other
peoples perspective.
This belief, and her
fond memories and love of
her hometown, have made
Trucks a passionate advo-
cate for the Vogue Theatre
revitalization project.
I saw my first mov-
ies at the Vogue Theatre,
she said. So now that tiny
little girl thats seen movies
at the Vogue is dreaming
of performing and being
in the movies that I am, I
really want to bring that
full circle if I can and do
everything I can to help the
Vogue because they helped
me.
Between the Ramsdell
and the Vogue and all the
wonderful acting and dance
teachers in the community,
all of these entities really
have lifted me up and I
think the options are limit-
less for what the new facil-
ity can do.
Its an avenue for
understanding, she said.
Movies are so healing,
theyre powerful. I think
thats why people get pas-
sionate.

NORTH AMERICAN
PRECIS SYNDICATE
By making simple switches
and smart product investments,
new parents can save thousands
of dollars in the first year, while
still providing what is best for
baby.
Parents can get high-quality,
safe products for their infant and
spend less, says Sandra Gordon,
national baby products expert
and author of Consumer Reports
Best Baby Products, 10th edi-
tion. Here are her tips:
SAVE
nInfant nutrition go with
the store brand. While breast
milk is best and the most eco-
nomical choice, for moms who
choose to formula feed or want
to supplement breast milk with
formula, store brand infant
formula is nutritionally compa-
rable to national brands. As a
mom and pediatrician, I recom-
mend to moms who choose to
formula feed to check out store
brand infant formula, said Dr.
Jennifer Trachtenberg, M.D., a
New York City pediatrician and
author of The Smart Parents
Guide to Getting Your Kids
Through Checkups, Illnesses and
Accidents. All infant formula
sold in the United States, nation-
al and store brands, must meet
the same nutrient requirements
of the U.S. Food and Drug
Administration so they are nutri-
tionally equivalent. Visit www.
storebrandformula.com for more
information and nutritional com-
parisons.
nDont buy a crib set. It may
seem nice to have a beautiful,
coordinated crib set, but certain
accessories can make your babys
crib unsafe. Basically, bare is
best. A tight-fitting crib sheet is
all your baby needs. For warmth,
dress your baby in a sleep sack
instead of using a crib blanket.
nSkip the designer duds.
Babies grow fast, so they wont
get to wear expensive clothes for
long. Watch for sales and scout
for designer wear at secondhand
shops. They can also be great
places for holiday outfits.
SPLURGE
nBuy a new car seat. If you
get a used car seat at a garage
sale, you wont know the age of
the car seat or if its been in an
accident, which can compromise
its integrity; car seats have an
expiration date, typically six
years. Car seat components can
degrade over time. Also, the
instruction manual may be miss-
ing, and installing the seat cor-
rectly is extremely important for
your childs safety.
nBuy a safe, reliable crib.
Crib safety standards are updated
frequently. A new crib can help
you be sure youre getting the saf-
est one for your baby. Its money
well spent, especially considering
that babies spend up to 18 hours
a day sleeping.
nBuy a quality stroller.
Consider how and where youll
use the stroller most often to
determine what kind to get and
avoid buying multiple strollers.
You can probably get a quality
set of wheels starting at around
$150.

Just because it isnt

Most people think

round, says Dr. Jenna
Lewis, an optometrist with
VSP Vision Care, the largest
not-for-profit vision ben-
efits company in the United
States. In fact, the sun
sits lower in the sky dur-
ing winter, providing more
exposure.
While Americans are
pretty good about wearing
sunglasses in summer, most
tend to ignore the suns
harmful effects in the winter
months. But UV rays are
dangerous all year. Snow
is reflective, and up to 85
percent of the suns UV rays
are reflected back up into
the eyes.
Those UV rays damage
eyes the same way they
damage skin, and can cause
cataracts, macular degener-
ation and cancerous growths
both inside and around the
eyes, all of which can cause
blindness.
However, much of the
damage the sun causes
can be prevented simply
by wearing sunglasses that
block 100 percent of UV
rays.
Start Young
UV damage is cumulative
over time and doesnt heal,
so start protecting your
eyes from the sun now.
That includes making sure
children are outfitted with
sunglasses and protecting
eyes of all ages from the sun
all year.
Most UV damage occurs
before age 18, but less than
30 percent of children wear
sunglasses.
In the winter, parents
arent slathering their kids
with sunscreen, and are
instead bundling them up
with coats and scarves,
says Dr. Lewis. So sun-
glasses arent intuitively top
of mind, but they should
be.
Check The
Label
Make sure your sun-
glasses are 99-100 percent
UV-rated. Tinted sunglasses
wont provide UV protec-
tion unless they have a UV
rating on the label. Wearing
tinted glasses that are not
actually protective allow the
pupils to dilate, which lets
more radiation in the eyes
than wearing no sunglasses
at all.
Also, the more cover-
age the frame provides, the
more protection you will
receive. You may also want
to get polarized lenses,
which cut down on glare, if
you live in a snowy area or
by water.
When the sun is shin-
ing on the snow, its almost
impossible to see, let alone
drive without sunglasses,
cautions Dr. Lewis. And
thats a real safety hazard.
Be Functional
in Style
Different color lenses
work better for different
conditions. For example,
yellow lenses are great for
skiing since they filter out
blue light that can make
focusing difficult. Green
lenses are great for general
outdoor use, and brown/
amber lenses enhance depth
perception, making them
good for driving and sports.
You can learn more at www.
vsp.com. Or see your local
eye doctor, who can help
you find the right shades for
your needs -- particularly if
you prefer the convenience
of prescription lenses.
Just remember as youre
bundling up this winter to
make sure your eyes dont
go naked!

STATEPOINT MEDIA
Gathered with family or
snuggled together by a cozy
fire, the holiday season is
the perfect time to pop the
question.
In fact, a recent Modern
Bride survey reveals that
one in four grooms propos-
es during this festive time
of year.
If youre planning to
propose to your sweet-
heart in the coming weeks,
you may be feeling over-
whelmed by the task at
hand. By planning the per-
fect holiday proposal you
can take the stress out of
one of the biggest moments
of your life.
Timing Matters
If you want a resound-
ing yes to your question,
ensure its the right time
for you and your significant
other.
With a little finesse,
you can find out how your
honey feels, and still make
the question a complete
surprise when the time
comes. Watch a movie
that involves a marriage
proposal or mention the
engagements of friends and
acquaintances to gauge a
reaction. This light detec-
tive work should give you
all the information you
need.
Celebrate the
Season
Take advantage of the
tinsel and lights of the
season, which provide
the perfect backdrop for
romance. Consider hanging
the engagement ring from
the tree instead of a star or
angel, or slide the ring into
her stocking.
Or, if you like the idea
of spectacle, deliver the ring
dressed up like Santa, or
have carolers incorporate
the proposal into a tune.
You may want to wait
until youre not surrounded
by extended family to pop
the question. New Years
Eve is a great time to do
this because your kiss and
toast at midnight will have
two meanings.
Next Steps
Getting engaged is the
first step in a long wedding
planning process. Next you
will need to share the good
news with your loved ones.
Youll want to announce
your engagement and wed-
ding date right away to
ensure everyone can make
it to your celebration, but
dont sacrifice creativity.
Save the dates cards from
an online stationery store
with customization options,
such as Minted.com, make
the process easier.
Your wedding is your
special day, so look for
cards that express your per-
sonality, advises Mariam
Naficy, CEO of Minted.
com. An online store also
is a great option for wed-
ding invitations, because
the color and style options
are vast and easily search-
able. To explore save the
date and wedding invitation
ideas, visit www.minted.
com.
However you decide
to propose, dont forget to
make the moment special,
because its one youll never
forget.
