INTRODUCTION

The LetRipp II Software User Guide has been designed to compliment any Perfect Power product that uses LetRipp II Technology. The LetRipp II Software is a universal tuning software for all Perfect Power LetRipp II products. If the Perfect Power product is marked with the LetRipp II logo, then the LetRipp II Software will communicate with that product. You must use the LetRipp II Software User Guide in conjunction with running the software. Using this guide in isolation to the LetRipp II Software will not enable you to fully understand the softwares capabilities and features. LetRipp II is Perfect Powers next generation of tuning software that allows the User more freedom and control, combined with higher resolution and speed. The LetRipp II Software was designed to provide the User with all the possible information at his/her fingertips, yet allow the User to easily hide, move or switch off various display options while tuning. LetRipp II products with USB communication connect to a PC/Laptop via a standard USB cable, and the units receive power from the PC in the absence of a vehicles power. LetRipp II products which are specifically made for RS232 interface, do not have the same PC POWER feature as with products with USB communication. If your product has a USB port, then we recommend familiarizing yourself with it on the bench first. The LetRipp II Software User Guide will cover all the aspects of the LetRipp II Software and assist you with each feature and screen. The actual operation of the product and physical installation of the product will not be covered in this Guide. Please refer to the relevant products Technical Guide for details on the physical installation and unit operation. The LetRipp II Software User Guide will also cover all the aspects with installing the LetRipp II Software, DotNet Framework and USB Drivers. 2 MINIMUM PC REQUIREMENTS Windows 2000 or XP (at present, LetRipp II Software is not Windows VISTA compliant) Pentium 4, 1.8Mhz Minimum 256 MB RAM USB Port, high speed USB2 Screen size 800 x 600, good graphics adaptor Hard drive space of 60 MB for the application

We recommend a screen size of 1024 x 768, 512MB RAM and Windows XP. 3 3.1 1) 2) 3) 4) INSTALLING LETRIPP II SOFTWARE ON YOUR PC GETTING STARTED Insert the CD that is supplied with the product kit, into the CD Rom drive of your PC/Laptop. An automatic Auto start will appear. Follow the instructions on the screen. There are two fundamental steps to successfully install the software. These steps must be followed in the correct order indicated below.

Install the software (Step 1) and the USB drivers (Step 2) BEFORE plugging in the unit in to the USB port on the computer! NOTE: If the LetRipp II unit does not have a USB port and only has an RS232 cable instead, then the installation of the USB drivers will not be required.

STEP 1 - SOFTWARE INSTALLATION Install the LetRipp II software application and follow the default prompts on the screen. If prompted, answer YES to all the questions and if prompted, install from disk. DOTNET FRAMEWORK

3.2.1 1) 2) 3) 4) 5) 3.3

The DotNet Framework software is only needed once. If you have had to re-format your hard drive, or if you have a new computer, you will need to install the DotNet Framework. If you have never installed any of our Perfect Power products software before, (particularly the more recent products such as XMS, XMS-L and SMT7), you MUST install the Dot Net Framework software first. To install the DotNet Framework software, please click on the DotNet Framework button on the main screen of the CD Auto start. If you have installed the DotNet Framework previously, Windows will inform you of this. In this case, you will not need to install the DotNet Framework software again. STEP 2 INSTALLING THE USB DRIVERS (FOR LETRIPP II PRODUCTS WITH USB PORT)

Click on the button to install the USB Drivers and follow the prompts on the screen. For some reason, should you need to install the USB drivers manually, and then run C:\LetRipp II MapFiles\USB Drivers\DPInst.exe. Once you have followed the steps above, you have completed installing the LetRipp II application with the required USB drivers.

Once you start the LetRipp II software application for your LetRipp II product, and you are connected to the unit and computer via the USB cable, youll see an orange bar at the bottom right hand corner that is moving from side to side. The status bar at the bottom of the screen should tell you USB Comms ONLINE and Polling Active.
Communication Working

This confirms that the communication is working. If the USB cable is unplugged while ONLINE, a moving navy blue bar will indicate that the unit has lost communication. Simply plug the USB cable back in, and the communication should be restored. TIP: It is a good idea to always use the same physical USB port on the computer when talking to the LetRipp II product. Using other USB ports will only add an annoyance factor as it will possibly reinstall the USB drivers again for every different USB port used. 3.6 3.6.1 NO COMMUNICATION OR INCORRECT USB INSTALLATION ATTEMPTING COMMUNICATION

If you have started the LetRipp II software application and connected the LetRipp II product to your computer via the USB cable and you do not get an orange bar at the bottom right hand corner, there is a problem with the connection. When there is a problem with the connection or there is no communication between the unit and the PC, you will also see the messages Attempting a Connection and USB Comms Off Line.
Attempting Communication

1) 2)

If this is the case, try plugging the USB cable into another USB port on the PC, as sometimes the USB port you are using, may not be working. Should all the USB ports not work, then you will need to reinstall the USB drivers.

ESTABLISHING COMMUNICATION CONNECTING TO THE PC USB COMMUNICATION

5.1.1

LetRipp II units with USB communication will have a square silver USB port on the unit and will come packaged with a USB cable. The USB unit will receive power from the PC/Laptop USB port, which will allow you to tune and play with the maps on your desk (i.e. away from the vehicle). The USB power will only provide power to the processor and not to the entire unit. The unit should still be wired in, according to the wiring-in instructions, to a good plus and minus (switched) 12 Volt supply for the entire unit to work correctly.

USB Port

5.1.2

RS232 COMMUNICATION

In contrast to USB Communication above, the RS232 communication port will not provide power to the unit. To tune the unit on the bench, an external 12 Volt power source must be used. The LetRipp II unit with RS232 communication will be slightly slower on startup as this form of communication speed is much slower than USB communication. NOTE: It is very important to wire up the unit correctly into the vehicle, especially the grounds of the unit, as it could damage the RS232 port on both the unit and the PC. Never unplug the unit and its harness or RS232 communication cable without first switching off the power to the unit!

WARNING:

5.1.3

WIRELESS COMMUNICATION

The WIRELESS option requires a USB/WIRELESS adaptor (Part number: WireX). For this unit the USB Software driver must be installed (see above). The connection to the WireX POD is via a standard USB cable. The WireX POD is used for ALL wireless communications. Only one per workshop is needed. For the technical minded: Communication is on the 2.4GHz band, on one of 16 frequencies, with up to 8 units being active, with manual channel hopping. Apart from the communications interface, all features of the target unit are supported.

5.2

CHECKING THE UNITS LED DISPLAY

When external power is supplied or a USB cable is plugged into the PC, either the RED or GREEN LED lights should light up, signaling that the unit is operational. Depending on the LetRipp II product that you have, the RED LED signals a fault condition (but this also means that you have correct communication) and the GREEN LED signals a correct connection. If you look closely while you insert the USB power, you will notice a short blip on the RED LED followed by a consistent fault condition. The short blip indicates a successful start of the LetRipp II unit and then it finds the fault e.g. NO INJECTION, NO RPM, etc. Should both LED lights be OFF, then there is a problem with the wiring of the power to the unit or a problem with the USB driver installation. The LED light(s) must come on! 6 STARTING THE SOFTWARE There are two ways to start the tuning software either via using the shortcut icon on your desktop, or selecting the software from the Program Files list in Windows. Once the software has been installed, a shortcut icon is placed on your desktop (see an example of the icon to the left) and a shortcut folder is placed under the Program files list in your Windows operating system.

Double click on the icon or select Start / All Programs / Perfect Power LetRipp II / LetRipp II Tuning Tool, in order to start the LetRipp II Software tuning program. When the program starts to load, a splash screen (shown above) is displayed while the tuning screen is loaded in the background. When the splash screen is present, the tuning program will not operate or function. The splash screen will automatically disappear after 3 4 seconds or alternatively the Continue >>> button can be clicked which will immediately close the splash screen, and take you straight into the software. The purpose of the splash screen is to provide the main program some time to load the data from the unit and to sort out the display of the data. 6.1 CHECKING FOR CORRECT COMMUNICATION

If there is incorrect communication or no connection, the main screen will not load any details and the indicators will appear, such as: No USB Comms in the top right hand corner Map? no map loaded (this comes from the unit) USB Comms Offline and Attempting a Connection in the bottom right hand corner. No orange bar in the bottom right hand corner. Although this main screen could differ slightly due to the product that the software is connected to, the Name of the connected Unit will always appear in the top right hand corner if a successful communication or

connection has been established. 6.1.1

ESTABLISHING COMMUNICATION TO THE UNIT

If you have the scenario above, which indicates incorrect communication, follow the steps below to establish correct communication with your unit. 1) In the LetRipp II Software, click on Tools, then Communication Setup, as shown below. This will open the Communication Setup screen.

2)

On the Communication Setup screen (as shown below), you will be able to set the communication type (USB, RS232 or wireless) and the ports to be used. The changes that you select will be immediate. However it is suggested to restart the software package after any communication changes have been made.

WIRELESS COMMUNICATION

The WireX POD has two LEDs on the side to indicate transmission and reception. The one close to the USB connector indicates transmission (TX), the other reception (RX). The TX LED should blink once the PC software is configured fir WIRELESS. If the TX LED blinks it means that one, or more, units are within reach of the POD. At this time the units NUMBERPLATE INFORMATION should be displayed. Select one and click connect.

Once the connection is established all data are uploaded and the target unit can be accessed as normal. HINT: The data display has as the last item the RX SIGNAL STRENGTH. Check it to establish the quality of the communication: Below 20: Poor, slow, repeats often 20-150: Normal working, fast 150-255: You are very close, fast If the signal strength is below 20 then you may want to RELOCATE the POD. In some environments you may experience problems communicating to the WirX product, if you do experience such problems you can try the following options: 1. 2. 3. 4. Open the Tools Communication Setup Select Wireless radio button. If the unit you want to connect to appears in the Wireless Network Selection click the unit and then click connect to selected. If no product is displayed, click the Re-acquire network button then follow step 1. If no product is still displayed then click the Reset WireX device button, wait 5 seconds and then follow step 2. If no product is still displayed then click the Channel Hop button and repeat steps 1, 2, 3 and 4 until you get stable communication.

The software can be customized to suit the Users requirements. This makes it very powerful for the professional User, as well as very easy to use for the beginner. The software will most likely start for the first time with nothing showing on the screen, except for the indications that tell you that there is communication see Checking for Correct Communication above. In this section you will be shown the features and functions of the software and how to use them. As you become more familiar with the software, you will be able to create a powerful tuning tool, which is suited to your tuning requirements. Should the need arise; you can use this software package with multiple products, allowing you to speedily tune the next vehicle without needing to learn something new again. When you first start up the software, there is a good chance you will see a plain screen, such as shown to the left. This means that your software has not been set up for the unit or product that is connected to it. Once you start to use the software and set up your requirements, your settings will be indicated by the display options and maps on the main screen.

The Step by Step Help Guide screen will then appear, as per the example below. The Step by Step Help Guide screen will always be on top of all other screens, so as to provide help every step of the way and to serve as a reference. This Help Guide can be opened in any mode or state and will not interfere with the tuning of the unit. Use the Next button to move from one step to the next and if you wish to jump to a particular step, use the Skip to Step button. There are approximately 20 help items, each explaining a particular feature of the tuning software. ONLINE AND OFFLINE MODES AN OVERVIEW

7.3

As soon as a unit is connected to the software, the software will attempt to go online and establish a communication link. The only way to have the software in a true Offline mode is to have the unit un-plugged and then start up the software. There is another mode or state of communication and this is when the unit has been online and for some reason the communication cable has been un-plugged or the power to the unit was interrupted. This mode is Offline but not in the true sense of the word. In this state the configuration of the unit has already been loaded and the software is waiting for the same unit to reconnect. This communication state is usually brief and not permanent. Certain functions work either in Online mode or in Offline mode, while some functions work in both modes. The Offline mode is typically used to do tuning or final adjustments to the tune maps from the bench and then the saved map can be transferred to the unit at a later stage. The Online mode is used to have real time, continuous communication to the connected unit. The software will make sure at any moment in time that what you see is what the unit is running on. The values that you type in are immediately downloaded, saved in the unit and used within half a second. For this reason, we have split the Online and Offline Modes into separate sections. 7.4 ONLINE MODE

The Online mode of communication means that there is a constant communication flow between the unit and the software. It does not matter if either the RS232 or USB type of communication is used, the screens and the functions will remain the same. We define ONLINE as the state between the software and the unit where the data between the software and the unit is always identical. The software has been designed to maintain this relationship at all times. NOTE: The Online information comes from the connected unit and will differ from unit to unit. We have used various units as examples to demonstrate various points. Please understand that your screen and possible screen selections will differ from what you see here.

GENERAL SCREEN

As it is visible from the above screen examples, it is possible to get almost any combination of screen layout (screen shot on the right hand side). Most likely the screen you will first see when you start the program, is the empty screen on the left hand side. 7.4.2 LOADING A MAP FILE

You have two options to LOAD a Tune Map using the Menu bar or the Icon Task bar. Using the Menu Bar, click on File, then select Load File. The Open File screen will open, as shown to the left. The default Operating Directory is C:\Tune_MapFiles. This directory has been created on your hard drive for the purpose of storing Map Files. Should you wish to locate a file in a different directory to the default Operating Directory, click the Browse button and select a new directory on your computer. Once a directory has been chosen, it will be stored for future use. The program will only display Map Files that are suitable for your unit. In this example, these are the compatible Map Files for the product XMS4. To LOAD a Map File, simply select the desired file from the list, and then click on the Load button. The program will automatically replace all screen contents with the information from the file and also send down (download) the map data to the unit. The loading of a file can be done while the vehicle is running on the unit. Depending on the size of the data being downloaded, allow approximately 3 seconds for the unit to respond to the new data. On the Open File Screen, the DELETE button will delete the selected Map File from the hard drive of the computer. When the Delete function is selected, the software will prompt the User to confirm the task (deletion).

When downloading a saved file or the default map to the unit, multiple windows are opened as the polling number decreases, all displaying the same problem, The downloaded data had a problem in the format, Unit return a question mark! Check that the Regional and Language Options in the control panel have been set to use the decimal (.) and not the comma (,) The unit works with the decimal point (.) in the Tuning and Config maps and will incorrectly apply the data when the comma (,) is used causing the problem. WARNING: Once the file has been deleted, it cannot be recovered by the Windows Operating System and will be gone forever. A deleted Map File cannot be restored in any way, so exercise caution when Deleting Map Files. Using the Icon Task bar, click on the Open File icon as shown to the left.

7.4.3

SAVING A MAP FILE You have two options to SAVE a Tune Map using the Menu bar or the Icon Task bar. Using the Menu Bar, click on File and select Save. The SAVE function will allow you to provide a file name and a suitable description for the map being saved. The directory where the maps are saved will be the same directory that has been specified as the Operating Directory on the File Open screen above.

You can also use the FAST SAVE option on the Menu list. The FAST SAVE function will save your map with a common name (AFastSave) and with a common description. The keyboard short cut for the Fast Save is Ctrl + S. Every time the Fast Save option is exercised, an incremental number is attached to the filename, thereby making it unique. An unlimited number of fast save files can be stored on your hard drive as each saved map file is only approximately 92KB in size. If the FAST SAVE function is used, the saved Map Files will also be displayed in the list of Map Files. Should the Description of the Map File need to be changed, and then simply double click on the selected filename. An editing dialog box such as the one to the left will appear, allowing you to change the description of the selected Map File. Using the Icon Task bar, click on the Save Map icon as shown to the left.

NOTE: The map files that are saved can only be loaded by the same unit type. Map migration between different product units is not allowed and not supported.
LETRIPP II SOFTWARE USER GUIDE PUBLIC VERSION V2.2 11/15/2010 16

7.4.4

VIEWING THE MAIN MAPS Click on Maps on the Main Menu bar, and check which maps are installed in your unit. Take note of the keyboard short-cut function key assigned to each map name. You will notice that when you use the function keys, the maps will toggle to be visible or not. Toggling the Maps to be visible or not, will not change the active state of the Map.

You can also move the maps on the screen by placing your mouse cursor on the edge of the map and clicking with your left mouse button so that the cursor changes to a cross. Keep holding down the button to move the map. If your physical screen is very small, less then (800 x 600), then very little will be able to be viewed at the same time. The software will prevent you from dragging the map off the screen. Should the Maps need to be relocated automatically, click on the option Reset Map Positions at the bottom of the Main Map Menu. This will move all the screens to be one on top of the other in the top left hand corner of the screen. 7.4.5 ENTERING NUMBERS OR VALUES ON A MAP

There are many ways to enter values or data into the tune maps. Some of the techniques are suitable for desktop editing, while others are more suitable for in-car tuning with a laptop. 1) Single Cell entry Simply click on the map that you wish to edit. Use the Arrow keys on your keyboard, to navigate to the desired place, then type in the value or number that you wish to have entered. Press ENTER on the keyboard, when done. Using the ENTER key on the keyboard, is very important as it confirms the end of your entry and then sends the data down to the unit. 2) Set Column This will set the entire selected column of a map. Click or select the column that you wish to have changed, then type in a value or number and press enter. The entire column will change to your typed-in number. The keyboard shortcut key for Set Column is Ctrl + C. If have selected the icon, then the Set Column function will remain active until such time the icon is clicked again, to deactivate it. The icon will remain indented (like a button) to show you that it is still active. If you used the keyboard shortcut command, then the function will be disabled after it has been used (in other words, it wont remain ON like when you click on it and it becomes indented). 3) Set Row This will set the entire selected row of a map. Click or select the row that you wish to have changed and then type a number and press enter. The entire row will change to your typed in number. The short cut key for Set column is Ctrl + R. This feature will benefit the Tuner, as you will only need to enter four values in each corner of the Map to get the rest of the values automatically entered by the LetRipp II Software. The Blend function can also be used in single row or columns where a simple blend is required, such as a side map. You will first need to enter values into the four corners of the Map. The Main Map is used in this example.

In this example, we entered 0 in the top left hand corner, 110 in the bottom left hand corner, 245 in the top right hand corner and 180 in the bottom right hand corner. Once your corner numbers or values have been entered, select the TOP LEFT hand corner with a mouse click or move the editing cursor.

Then hold down the SHIFT key while moving your editing cursor to the BOTTOM RIGHT corner of the field that you wish to have edited. The Map will then be coloured in blue, such as the example on the left. Once you have a selection, press G for GO. G is the keyboard command for activating the Blending function.

The Block area function can also be used in single row or columns where a simple increase or decrease is required. You will first need to select area that needs to be changed in the Map. The Injection Map is used in this example.

CONFIG SCREENS Select Config on the Main Menu Bar. A list of the available Config screens will appear. The Config screens have a global impact on all tuning that is done. All the Config screens are always active in the calculations of the unit. The list of available Config screens will differ from product to product. This particular example is from a Fuel Tuner. Take note of the keyboard shortcut keys for each Config screen. All the keyboard shortcuts for the Config screens start with the Shift key followed by a function key.

There are three different types of Config screens: 1) Parameters and System Def These are for setting various global values that have an impact on the running of the unit, for example, the Max Fuel Limit. 2) Status Display This will show you what the unit is doing or what functions are presently active, for example, which Map the unit is presently running in. 3) Calibration The Calibration Screens will differ from product to product and therefore you may only see two different Calibration options or five as in the example of the Fuel Tuner product. 7.4.7.1 CALIBRATION SCREENS UNDER CONFIG

Under the Config option on the Main Menu Bar, a number of Calibration options will be available, depending on the type of product that you are connected to. Each Calibration option will open up a relevant screen. All the Calibration screens are scales for maps. The RPM Calibration is used on all maps and can only be setup when selected under Config. All Calibration screens will have the same colour, as shown above. We have included three examples above to show the slight differences between

the way they look. All screens have an Apply button that will apply the changes you have just entered. To calibrate the TPS, display the TPS% value as shown in section 7.4.7. Turn on the Ignition. The percentage displayed is the Lower calibration value, then press the accelerator pedal to full throttle and use the displayed value for the Upper calibration. Once a change has been made, the change will be indicated immediately on all the screens that use this calibration and this change will also be downloaded to the unit. The new scale will have an immediate effect on the unit. 7.4.7.2 STATUS DISPLAY Select Status Display from the Config Menu Item. The amount of items on the display will differ from product to product. The Status Display screen is used to inform the User which function the unit is presently running in. If a function is marked in BOLD, then that function is presently active. The Status Display cannot set or change any of the function states. It simply just shows the combined result of the Parameter and System Def in the map, unit wiring and any other function that has an affect on the unit. The Status Display function can also be selected by clicking on the icon as shown above. 7.4.7.3 PARAMETER DISPLAY

Select Parameters from the Config Main Menu item. The Parameter screen will be displayed with a variety of features. The Parameters function will be mainly used in the setting up of a vehicles installation. If you want to find out more about the Parameters, RIGHT CLICK on any item and HOLD the RIGHT button down. The relevant information will then be displayed. The Parameters screen can also be selected by clicking on the icon as shown above. 7.4.7.4 SYSTEM DEF (SYSTEM DEFINITION) Main Menu item. A Help feature will appear such as the one shown to the left, providing you with solutions and information.

The Help feature is also part of the manual as it provides in some instances technical information on how the item works and how it affects the process in the unit. The Help feature also provides information on what type of numbers or values should be entered. The Help feature will only operate when the unit is Online as the Help information comes from the unit itself. 7.4.9 FAULT INDICATION

A faulty display is always indicated and highlighted in RED. It may have a number in it, but it is preferable to place the mouse cursor over the faulty (RED) display and the FAULT CONDITION will be displayed. There may be more than one condition, as each display item will have a capability of 15 fault states attached to it.

In the above example, a display item Airt Temp has a fault, shown by the RED numbers 000. By moving your mouse pointer over the display field, a fault message will be displayed Fault Input open, short. 7.4.10 LOGGING

While the LetRipp II Software and the unit are Online, you will be able to Log (Record) a session of running your tune map. You will only be able to Play Back the logged or recorded data when the LetRipp II Software and the unit are OFFLINE.

To Log or Record data, click on the Logging item on the Main Menu bar, then select Start Logging to commence the logging of the session. Once the logging has been started, a message will be displayed: indicating the filename that will be used to store the data. Each time a new recording is done, an incremental counter will be added to the name, so that each file will be unique. In the above example, the counter is presently at 002. The Log File will be stored in the same location as your Tune maps. By default the location will be C:\Tune_MapFiles. To STOP the recording, either close the program or select Stop the Logging under the Logging item on the Main Menu. 7.4.11 DISPLAY UNITS You can change the measurement units and nomenclature of your software by clicking on the icon Display Units, as shown to the left. A dialog box called Display Units will appear with the unit selection for pressure, temperature, air fuel ratio, and distance. Click on the relevant radio button to select your preferred unit of measurement. The unit of measurement will be applied to every aspect of the software and entry fields. For example should you change the Air Fuel Ratio from AFR to Lambda then your entry field will change from 14.7 to 1 for the same reading. Note: It is highly recommended, once a change has been made to the preferred measurement unit, that the LetRipp II Software is restarted. Should the software not be restarted after a change is made, then the label of an item could be in the incorrect measurement unit and could mislead you into typing an incorrect value. 7.4.12 TOOLS
