ne of the great aspects of
protecting our wild lands is
that the results are on view for
everyone to enjoy. Acalanes Ridge, 23 acres
of open space we hope to purchase, offers a
new level of scenic prominence.
The property includes the highest
promontory on Acalanes Ridge, a 781-
foot tall landmark visible from 12 cities
and the transportation corridors of
Highways 24 and 680. The view from
the land features a striking, 360-degree
panorama of both cities and the most

the Carquinez Strait and more.
The land is covered in an array of
annual grasslands and clusters of valley oak
trees, which provide habitat for a variety

Message from the
Executive Director
Common Good
I am delighted to report
that the Muir Heritage Land
Trust has had an incredible
year filled with landmark
achievements. Looking at what
we have accomplished, I am also
convinced that well remain a
leading force in conservation
for generations to come. By
working together, innovating
and pursuing excellence we will
build an even greater future for
our organization, our community
and our region. The extraordinary
year we are having testifies to that.
For more than 20 years the
Muir Heritage Land Trust has
been a great example of people
working together. Our members
readiness to learn, to work, to
serve, and to give grows from
a powerful sense of connection
to the Land Trusts mission to
preserve Contra Costas most
endangered wild lands and bring
people and those wild places
together. By individually making
the choice to become involved,
our supporters help create a
healthy, sustainable community
well all want to live in now and
in the future. All thats required
are individuals willing to do
something, in their way, to help
protect our most precious natural
resources. To add just a little bit
to make the world better. That is
the essence of the Muir Heritage
Land Trust. Im proud to be a part
of it, and I hope you are, too.

n the heart of many, Franklin Canyon
was an ache that wouldnt go away.
Proposals to develop the property
meant the fertile terrain would be
bulldozed beyond recognition: thousands
of trees would be destroyed, creeks and
watersheds defiled, wildlife and their
homes devastated. So disturbing were
those plans that ordinary citizens decided
they had to do something about it, even if
the odds were against them.

Briones Regional Park and the Acalanes
Ridge Open Space.
The property is nestled among
residential developments, a stand-out oasis
in the community. The land is within the
city limits of Lafayette, borders Walnut
Creek and is contiguous to Acalanes Ridge
Open Space, a 177-acre recreational area
that connects to a large network of trails in
Briones Regional Park. The Acalanes Ridge
acquisition will have access to the great
trails of both parks.
Since 2003, applications by the owners
to develop the property have included
building one or two private residences of
up to 5,900 square feet. Access roads to
the homes would have required extensive
grading and significant alteration of the
landscape.
For several years, the propertys owners,
the City of Lafayette, and community
members could not find common ground
on the fate of the property. All struggled
to find a solution to differing goals. While
its value as open space has long been
recognized and advocated by community
members and environmentalists, no
one city or agency could generate the
resources needed to preserve the land or
an agreement with the owners who were
reluctant to sell.
The Muir Heritage Land Trust
became involved with the project
more than two years ago. Our
continued discussions with the
owners led to their decision
to sell the property at the
appraised objective value for
its permanent protection. The
owners decision illustrates their
appreciation for the land
as open space.

negotiations. The Land Trust shaped a feasible
acquisition plan in partnership with the
City of Lafayette, the City of Walnut Creek,
and the East Bay Regional Park District
(EBRPD). All parties signed a purchase
agreement last February. In this agreement, the
Peak Experience continued from page 1
Muir Heritage Land Trust will hold title to
the property, and a conservation easement
placed on the land will be held jointly
by our three partners. This innovative
agreement combines the diverse strengths
of multiple partners in these lean times.
Escrow is due to close by the end of
December, and we must fulfill our part of
the agreement before that can happen. Our
partners have pledged funds from Measure
WW and other sources to purchase the
land, at a price of $1,305,500. MHLT must
raise $400,000 to cover the costs associated
with acquisition, and to provide for
stewardship, administration, planning, and
an endowment for long-range management.
Fundraising continueswe have yet to
reach our goal.
Acalanes Ridge is a visual delight we
can drink in as we go about our busy lives.
We are working to keep it that way, and to
open the land to the public as early as next
spring. Completing this acquisition would
add an exciting coda to a tremendous year,
a fitting end to our 20th Anniversary. We
hope to inaugurate our third decade by
adding the beautiful Acalanes Ridge to our
map of protected open space.

Their battlesfought over two
decades in City Hall, in living rooms and
finally at the ballot boxmanaged to stave
off development despite the odds. But the
protection wasnt permanent. The passage
of Hercules Measure M in 2004 limited
development, but it was still possible. And
the 483 acres remained in the hands of
private investors.
When the Muir Heritage Land
Trust signed an option in June of 2008
to purchase the land and
protect it once and for
all, hope stirred in
many hearts.
The outlook for
success was bright
then, but dimmed
soon after signing
the option. The belt-
tightening of state
agencies, foundations, and
individuals made fundraising
a highly unpredictable challenge. Yet
after two years of persistent hard work,
sufficient funding was finally achieved
from a wide-range of sources including
some of the following major donors:
California State Coastal Conservancy,
East Bay Regional Park District,
California Department of Transportation,
City of Hercules, San Francisco
Foundation, Long Foundation, Strong
Foundation, and the Firedoll Foundation.
In addition, thousands of other individuals
made donations large and smallmany
in response to Pet and Wildlife
Columnist Gary Bogues campaign.
On its June 25th deadline,
the Land Trust closed the deal.
The property is now oursand
some day will be yours to explore.
Plans for trails and public access are
under way.
Combined with adjacent
Fernandez Ranch, the acquisition
preserves 1,185 acres of continuous
watershed and wildlife habitat.
Abundant native and special-status
species live on Franklin Canyon.
One is the California red-legged
frog, federally listed as threatened,
which now can flourish on the
156 acres of red-legged frog habitat
identified on the land.
The entire property is
designated as critical habitat for the
Alameda whipsnake, also federally listed
as threatened. The western pond turtle,
a species of special concern, cools itself
near Rodeo Creek. Coopers hawksa
California species of special concernand
red-tailed hawks are known to nest on the
property, and golden eagles forage in the
open grasslands.
Franklin Canyon is left to nature for
all time. The animals can live undisturbed;
creeks can meander as they will. Oaks can
fulfill their centuries-long lifespan. Peace
has banished the ache for good.

a number of hurdles. The restoration of
Rodeo Creek was one of them, which
entailed contouring the creek banks and
planting 10,000 native plants for erosion
control. Access for emergency vehicles
as well as visitors necessitated a new,

include a staging area, picnic facilities

highlight is the 3.5 miles of enchanting

Guests at the dedication were
treated to a variety of docent-led hikes

an impressive array of speakers shared
their thoughts on the significance of the
accomplishment, including: Tina Batt,

on behalf of the Fernandez Family;
Director, Bay Area Ridge Trail Council;
Ted Radke, Ward 7 Board Member,

The Muir Heritage Land Trust
is pleased to announce the
appointment of longtime
Stewardship Committee member
Glen Lewis as its new Open Space
Ranger. In this position, Glen
will help oversee the operation,
maintenance and preservation of
more than 2,000 acres of open
space owned by the Muir Heritage
Land Trust. Mr. Lewis comes to
us having recently retired from a
successful 25-year career as Fire
Captain with the Moraga Orinda
Fire Department. Prior to his work
with the Fire Service, he was
also employed as a Park Ranger
with the East Bay Regional Park
District. Glen is a 50-year resident
of Martinez, California where
he currently lives with his wife
Martha, their daughter Kate and
son Graham. He was educated in
the Martinez Public School System,
holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in
Biological Sciences from California
State University at Sacramento
and is certified in a wide-range
of specialized technical training
relevant to his job responsibilities.
In his spare time Glen enjoys
being active in a variety of hobbies
and interests including carpentry,
gardening, hiking, bicycling and
kayaking. Please join the board
and staff of the Muir Heritage
Land Trust in offering Glen Lewis
a warm welcome as our new
Open Space Ranger.
