5. Read the text about The History of Valentine's Day and then answer the questions. Every February, across the country, sweets, flowers, and gifts are exchanged between loved ones, all in the name of St. Valentine. Valentine's Day, a holiday honoring love and lovers, is celebrated on February 14th. One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families. Then he ordered the Roman soldiers NOT to marry or become engaged. Claudius believed that as married men, his soldiers would want to stay home with their families rather than fight his wars. Valentine defied the Emperor's decree and secretly married the young couples. He was eventually imprisoned and put to death. Valentine was beheaded on February 14th, the eve of the Roman holiday Lupercalia. After his death, Valentine was named a saint. As Rome became more Christian, the priests moved the spring holiday from the 15th of February to the 14th - Valentine's Day. Now the holiday honored Saint Valentine instead of Lupercus. 9. Read the text below and then answer the question. How and when was English formed? Theres an old clich in linguistics that a language is a dialect with an army and navy behind it. This isnt just a gag. Defining when a new language is born is harder than, say, when a caterpillar becomes a butterfly. In the process by which a dialect becomes a language there is no easy empirical equivalent of the point when the butterfly emerges from the larva able to take off. So no linguist can look back and say: Thats it, Wednesday 5 May 1213, thats when the English language finally got wings. Norman Roberts, professor of linguistics at Hawaii University, says: A language is such a complex structure it cant come into being at once. New languages develop out of older ones but it isnt easy to say, when the new and old are so different, when a new language is born. Benji Wald, an expert on linguistics at the University of California, says: Its difficult to say when English was born but before it there was another language, the language from which Dutch and German come. The English we speak today is so different from old English we could call it a different language, but we dont. We just call it a newer form of English. Although English belongs to the Germanic family, it has become a strange cocktail with words imported from the countrys invaders and, today, from this countrys largest excolony. Celts, Romans, Anglo-Saxons, Danes and Normans all made their mark. (Focus, Apr. 1999, p. 92) 8. Fill in the gaps with there to be in the simple present. Thanksgiving, or Thanksgiving Day, is a traditional North American holiday to give thanks, traditionally to God, for the things that one has at the conclusion of the harvest season. Thanksgiving is generally considered a secular holiday, and is not directly based in religious canon or dogma. In the United States, certain kinds of food are traditionally served at Thanksgiving meals. Stuffing, mashed potatoes with gravy, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, maize, other fall vegetables, and pumpkin pie are commonly associated with Thanksgiving dinner. The term Halloween, and its older spelling Hallowe'en, is shortened from All-hallow-even, as it is the evening before All Hallows Day (also known as "All Saints' Day"). The holiday was a day of religious festivities in various northern European Pagan traditions. In the 5th century BC, in Celtic Ireland, summer officially ended on October 31. The holiday was called Samhain (sow-en), the Celtic New year until Pope Gregory III moved the old Christian feast of All Saints Day to November 1 to give Halloween a Christian interpretation. One story says that, on that day, the disembodied spirits of all those who had died throughout the preceding year would come back in search of living bodies to possess for the next year. It was believed to be their only hope for the afterlife. The Celts believed all laws of space and time were suspended during this time, allowing the spirit world to intermingle with the living. It is celebrated in parts of the Western world, though most commonly in the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland, Puerto Rico, with increasing popularity in Australia and New Zealand. It is traditionally believed that ghosts and witches can be seen on that night. Children often dress up as witches, ghosts, etc., and sometimes make lamps out of pumpkins. They go out in groups and go to peoples doors. Children call out Trick or Treat and the person at the door gives each children a treat, usually a piece of candy or sweets.
