This week, 19th Circuit
Court Judge James Batzer
named Jill Nowak as the
new county clerk.
Nowak is a 17-year
employee of the county,
including the past 13 years
in the Manistee County
Clerks office. She will
replace Marilyn Kliber, who
retired from the position
on Dec. 31. Nowak will fill
out the remainder of a term
that lasts until Dec. 31 of
this year.
Judge Batzer told the
friends, family and co-
workers of Nowak who
gathered for the swearing
in ceremony that usually
his court deals in matters
that are much different
than a happy occasion of
this nature.
I think you know this
is not a place where a lot
of happy things occur, but
today is an exception,
Batzer said. As you know,
longtime county clerk
Marilyn Kliber retired at
the end of 2011. She retired
after many years of top
notch service to the people
of the county and we wish
her well.
However, the business
of the county goes on and
we have a vacancy in the
county clerks office and
under the Constitution of
the State of Michigan, that
position has to be filled by
the circuit court.
Batzer said that he felt
Nowak was a longtime
employee who was a perfect
choice to maintain the high
standards Kliber had set for
that office.
It is a pleasure for the
court to make the appoint-
ment, and I will now sign
the order and have her take
the oath of office, said
Batzer.
Nowak said that she
is thrilled at the opportu-
nity to serve the people of
Manistee County. She said
her association with the
community has been a life-
long one.
I was born and raised
in Manistee County, said
Nowak. I have an asso-
ciates degree from West
Shore Community College
and a bachelors in business
administration from Ferris
State University in 2010. I
worked for 13 years in the
clerks office and was Mrs.
Klibers chief deputy clerk.
I am excited to take
this next step in my career
with this opportunity, and
hopefully I will continue
the great office that Marilyn
has created here. It is a
busy place where we do so
many things, and right now
we are in full blown elec-
tion mode in our office.
Nowak said that they
are moving right ahead in
that area so the county will
be prepared for everything
without missing a beat.
Ballots have been
proofed and recently
ordered with the
Republican presidential
primary election the end
of February, said Nowak.
The ballots are being
shipped and township
clerks are getting their pre-
cinct inspectors together, so
that is exciting. We will also
have an August Primary as
we all know, 2012 is our
election year, and we will
have the General Election
in November.
That will keep us
really busy and there are
the other duties we have
as we are the clerk of the
circuit court for Manistee
County and that is a big
part of our job. We also
maintain all vital records
for Manistee County, birth,
death, marriages, all of the
court filings along with the
fines that people pay from
courts, concealed weap-
ons.
Nowak said she plans to
file her name as a candidate
for the clerks position for
the August primary and if
she wins at that level will
move on to the November
General Election. She also
invites people who need
services from the clerks
office to stop in.
I am ready to take that
next step, said Nowak. If
anyone ever has any issues
for our office, all they have
to do is call and we will
take care of it for them.

STATEPOINT MEDIA
Do you want to start the
New Year with a renewed
sense of optimism? Do
optimistic people think or
behave differently?
A new study recently
uncovered the secrets of
optimistic people who feel
in control of their lives.
One key to achieving
optimism and lowering
stress levels is to find ways
to take greater control over
your life, say researchers.
Sixty-six percent of
Americans now say they feel
in control of their lives, and
their lives are headed in the
right direction, according to
Lincoln Financial Groups
MOOD of America study.
So how can you be more
like them?
Grasp the
future
Surprisingly, researchers
STATEPOINT MEDIA
If youre feeling stressed
out by lifes daily dose
of details, its time to get
organized.
Whether its your sched-
ule, your house, or your
photos in a jumble, theres
no time like the New Year
to resolve to organize your
life.
And there are many
new, technological tools out
there to help.
Organize your
schedule
When it comes to your
schedule, are you still stuck
on sticky notes? Its time to
go digital so you can access
your information when
and where you need it. A
mobile and online calendar
and organizer can help you
stay on top of your sched-
ule by consolidating your
family members calendars
and lists all in one place.
Consider a service
that is available as an app
on your mobile phone or
tablet (as well as online)
and synchronizes with
your Outlook calendar. For
example, Cozi (www.cozi.
com), an online and mobile
calendar and organizer for
families, sends users email
and text reminders about
upcoming events and tasks,
and helps manage meal
planning and shopping
lists.
With reminders com-
ing directly to your phone
about what to pick up for
dinner or what time the
school play begins, you
wont miss a beat.
Simplify
errands
If after a full season
of holiday activities you
could use an extra hand
getting your home, pantry
and family back in order,
consider using services
like Alice.com, an online
marketplace for household
essentials.
Its all about simplify-
ing errands and restock-
ing your shelves with the
essentials you need, saving
you time, money and trips
to the store.
For the primary shop-
per of the family, getting
stocked up doesnt have
to mean running from
store to store, says Mark
McGuire, President and
Co-Founder of Alice.com.
There are faster, more
cost-efficient ways to shop
for everyday items, and
with one less errand to
run, shoppers will have
more free time to enjoy for
themselves or with their
families.
Such services help bud-
get-conscious shoppers
with competitive pricing,
free delivery, instant cou-
pons and simple manage-
ment of household goods.
Alice.com, for example,
even has a free iPhone app
as well, so you can stay
organized on the go.
Organize your
memories
If you love your camera
or smartphone, you prob-
ably already have a ton
of photos and videos that
need to be organized. You
dont have to do the hard
work if you choose a host-
ing site to protect, backup
and share your photos. Be
sure to pick one that has
unlimited upload capability
and privacy customization
options.
Whether youre sharing
photos with Grandma, or
running a business, a site
like SmugMug (www.smug-
mug.com) lets you set the
look of your site or gallery.
Theres no need to feel
harried by the myriad
details of managing your
household. With a little
work and the right tools,
you can stay on top of your
tasks in the new year.

uncovered several consistent behav-
iors and attitudes that are strongly
associated with feeling in control
of ones life -- all of which revolve
around not letting money or your job
define who you are.
Upbeat Americans are driven by
a mindset that they can always find
ways to solve problems. And they
seem to have struck the right balance
between finding time for fun things
they enjoy and taking the necessary
steps to secure their futures.
Americans who feel in control
of their destinies share a common
mindset focused on positive, con-
structive behaviors every day, said
Mark Konen, president of Insurance
and Retirement Solutions for Lincoln
Financial Group.
Simple steps to
optimism
The good news is there are certain
behaviors you can adopt to positively
impact your life. Consider these top
five behaviors of Americans who feel
in control of their lives:
n They value and cultivate per-
sonal relationships.
n They volunteer in their commu-
nities and give to charity.
n They take quiet time to be alone
and think.
n They exercise and spend time
on hobbies.
n They adhere to budgets and
save for retirement.
Not surprisingly, those who said
they felt in control have taken con-
crete steps to build financial secu-
rity, such as establishing retirement
accounts and owning other financial
products, including life insurance.
They are also more likely to stay
within their budgets and save money
from every paycheck, regardless of
amount.
Its not about money
One of the secrets of optimistic
Americans, according to the research,
is they are not driven by the desire to
be wealthy.
Instead, Americans in charge
consider financial freedom -- having
enough money to do what they want -
- to be four to five times more impor-
tant than being wealthy.
The combination of traits that
apply to take charge Americans
shows these people strike the right
balance, says Konen. They value
alone time, but also invest in rela-
tionships with friends and family.
They enjoy leisure time but make
time to sit down with their paperwork
and adhere to budgets.
More details from the new survey
can be found at LincolnFinancial.
com/surveys.
According to the new research,
the key to optimism is adopting a
mindset centered on the fact that its
squarely within your power to control
your destiny.
While you must take steps to build
a secure future, its equally important
to take time to enjoy life.

STATEPOINT MEDIA
More seniors than ever
before are living healthy
independent lives well into
their golden years. And
a vast majority want to
remain in their homes as
long as possible, according
to the National Aging in
Place Council.
However, most houses
were not built to adapt to
our changing needs as we
age.
The good news is there
are many simple ways to
make a home more func-
tional for your needs as you
age, says Shannon Sims,
marketing communications
manager for Therma-Tru
Corp.
By 2030, Americans 65
and older will make up 20
percent of the population.
For those wishing to make
aging-in-place easier, there
are several things to con-
sider.
De-clutter
rooms
Eliminate clutter that
could get in your way, such
as planters and small con-
sole tables.
Pay attention to area
rugs and other tripping haz-
ards. And if you have wood
floors and carpeting, install
transition strips where they
adjoin.
Evaluate your
entryway
To ideally accommodate
a wheelchair, the doorway
to your home should be at
least 32-inches wide. Even
without a wheelchair, a
wider opening can be ben-
eficial when entering and
exiting.
There are different
doors you can install to
meet your mobility needs
and personal style.
Tweak
bathrooms and
kitchens
Lowering countertops in
your kitchen and bathroom
can make using them easi-
er. And consider grab-bars
for showers and bathtubs.
For their part, curbless
showers and bathtubs with
entrances that open can
reduce the possibility of
falling.

making your
home senior

This Tiny Tim
I am a tiny 8 pound Maltese. On Dec. 20
I was hit by a truck, and my owner has
not come forward. Miraculously, my
organs were not damaged but I suffered a
fractured pelvis. I desperately need your
help so I can have surgery to repair my
injury. You see, I can't walk anymore
and this surgery is essential for me! The
cost is between $1,000-$1,200, which I
know is a lot of money but the nice peo-
ple at the shelter love me and want to save my life. At
Christmastime people reach out to those in need and I sure am
in need of some help right now! You can make your donation
to the "Zeke Fund, c/o Homeward Bound Animal Shelter, PO
Box 144, Manistee. I would be forever grateful and I can pay
you back with love and kisses! God bless us, every one!
