There are two assignments for this unit; 1. Minor Assignment 20% - due midnight Wednesday 6th July 2011 2. Major Assignment 30% - due midnight Wednesday 3rd August 2011 The assignments must be prepared using MS Word and / or Excel. It is extremely important that you do not use Word or Excel 2007 or VISTA as these cannot be opened via Blackboard. Assignments must use 2006 or earlier. If you use a file format that cannot be opened, we will endeavour to contact you via your Swinburne email, however if you do not respond quickly your work cannot be marked and you may fail the unit. Please check spelling, grammar and proof read your assignment prior to submission. Minor Assignment Due midnight Wednesday 6th July 2011 Robert Craft is the owner of Creative Activities Pty Ltd, a local business that sells a variety of sporting equipment and clothing. He started the business almost 5 years ago, after being the manager of a similar store in Melbourne for 10 years. He employs five sales staff, and 2 office staff who look after the day-to-day administration including accounts payable and receivable. Until now Robert has taken care of payroll and related matters. While pleased with the business and its performance, Robert has begun looking at expanding his operations. To go ahead with his planned expansion successfully Robert will need to purchase new office equipment including 6 new computers, a colour laser printer, a photocopy machine, and a small switchboard system. The cost of the new office equipment is $40,000 including GST. Roberts accountant has suggested he approach his bankers to obtain finance for the equipment rather than use his cash or overdraft facility. At his meeting with the bankers, Robert has been asked to provide the following information: Income Statement for the last 2 years Balance Sheet for the last 2 years

A little daunted by this task, approaches his accountant to seek help. Robert takes the following financial information, which his bookkeeper has extracted from MYOB, to his accountant.

d. Assessment Criteria: Assessment criteria for both assignments will be provided on Blackboard in the Assessments tab. e. Submission of Assignments: You are required to submit assignments via the Blackboard Post an Assignment facility. If you are unable to do this then please contact Liz Duncan at eduncan@wideband.net.au urgently. Place your name and your Swinburne student number as either a header or footer on your assignment. In an effort to save paper please do not attach a separate cover sheet to your assignment. f. Extensions and Late Submissions: Students are required to familiarise themselves with the university policy on extensions and late submissions. 1. This policy should be read in conjunction with the Universitys Assessment and Appeals Procedures. It does not cover absence from an examination held during an official examination period. Section 11 of the Universitys Assessment and Appeals Procedures covers such absence. 2. An extension is the time between the due date originally set for submission of an item for assessment and a new due date for acceptance of the assessment item without incurring a late penalty. 3. Extensions for individual work will not normally be granted except in the case of illness or extenuating personal circumstances and only where supporting evidence has been provided to the Unit convener or nominee. 4. Extensions for group work will not normally be granted. Absence from group presentations will only be approved in the case of illness or other extenuating personal circumstances and only
Page 13 of 16

where supporting evidence has been provided to the Unit convener or nominee. Students who miss a group presentation as a result of an approved absence will be required to present their component of the presentation at a later date. 5. Written applications for extension must be made to the Unit Convener or nominee on the appropriate form as soon as the student becomes aware of the need for an extension. Every effort should be made to notify the Unit convener or their nominee before the due date of the relevant piece of assessment. 6. Where the student has suffered an illness, the period of the extension granted will normally be equal to the number of days covered by the supporting medical certificate. 7. Poor planning and last minute equipment failure will not normally be grounds for an extension. Extensions request forms can be down loaded from Blackboard and must be emailed to Liz Duncan with the required supporting documentation if you wish your request to be considered. You will be notified via email as soon as a decision has been made. Where an extension has not been granted late submissions will be penalised 1 mark for each day they are late. Once the solutions have been posted no further assignments will be accepted. g. Assessment Results: Marks for assignments will be posted on the grade centre. Model solutions will also be posted on Blackboard and an announcement will be made when these are available. A short audio lecture, or an announcement, or both, containing general feedback will be posted on Blackboard after each assignment. An announcement will be made when this is available. Students must retain all assessed material that contributes to the final result up until such time as the final results are published. i. Plagiarism: Swinburne University of Technology defines Plagiarism as the action or practice of taking and submitting or presenting the thoughts, writings or other work of someone else as though it is your own work. Plagiarism includes any of the following, without full and appropriate acknowledgment to the original source(s): (i) The use of the whole or part of a computer program written by another person; (ii) the use, in essays or other assessable work, of the whole or part of a written work from any source including but not limited to a book, journal, newspaper article, set of lecture notes, current or past students work, any other persons work, a website or database; (iii) the paraphrasing of anothers work; (iv) the use of musical composition, audio, visual, graphic and photographic models, (v) The use of realia, that is objects, artefacts, costumes, models and the like. Plagiarism also includes the preparation or production and submission or presentation of assignments or other work in conjunction with another person or other people when that work should be your own independent work. This remains plagiarism whether or not it is with the knowledge or consent of the other person or people. It should be noted that Swinburne encourages its students to talk to staff, fellow students and other people who may be able to contribute to a students academic work but that where independent assignment is required, submitted or presented work must be the students own. Enabling plagiarism contributes to plagiarism and therefore will be treated as a form of plagiarism by the University. Enabling plagiarism means allowing or otherwise assisting another student to copy or otherwise plagiarise work by, for example, allowing access to a draft or completed assignment or other work. j. Assessment and Appeals Policy and Procedure The information outlined in the Assessment sections above is covered in more detail in Swinburnes Assessment and Appeals Policy and Procedure. Students must be familiar with the Policy and Procedure, found at:

Students should make themselves familiar with all aspects of the Policy and Procedure, as failure to do so is not grounds for appeal. Students are advised to seek advice from the staff at the Swinburne Student Amenities Association SSAA (http://www.swinburne.edu.au/ssaa/) if they require assistance with advocacy for Sections 12 (At-Risk and Progress Review) and 13 (Appeals) of the Policy and Procedure. Safety Standards and Conduct Requirements: All students are expected to respect the rights and sensibilities of their fellow students and teaching staff. This also applies in respect of the content of video and audio work submitted for assessment.
