PC Yacht Club Recognition Dinner

The Port Clinton Yacht Club held its annual Recognition Dinner Saturday, honoring four people for their skills and connection to sailing in Port Clinton. Left: Mark Hudak was the recipient of the annual Oliver True Memorial Award. He was voted the honor by the PCYC Board of Trustees for his long-term contributions as a volunteer for internal projects at the club. It is the highest award that can be given to a member at Port Clinton Yacht Club. Pictured, left to right, are 2012 Commodore Todd Bickley, Mark Hudak and 2011 Commodore Geoff Bailey.

Marblehead resident takes over countys Republican Party

BY JOHN SCHAFFNER Marblehead resident Carolyn Adams understands the challenge that lies ahead. Ottawa County is now and has long been a Democratic Party stronghold. But now that she is the chairman of the Ottawa County Republican Party, she says that unity will be her new watchword. At its December meeting, the Ottawa County Republican Central Committee accepted the resignation of long-time County Chairman Terry Lowe of Williston, as well as the resignation of vice-chairman Joyce Murphy of Port Clinton. Carolyn Adams and her husband Dex moved to Marblehead from Lima in 2004 and got involved in local politics almost immediately. Things are different in Allen County it is a strong Republican area. There, Carolyn Adams served as Shawnee Township Trustee for 10 years and was their chairman when she retired to move to Marblehead. She helped with campaigns for Lima city government Republican candidates as well as Allen County candidates. She helped organize the Presidential Republican Headquarters in 2008 here in Ottawa County, and was appointed to the Central Committee in 2009. Says the new County Republican leader: I am so excited and proud the Ottawa County Republican Party Chairman! As party leader, establishing a policy of inclusion and unity is imperative. Setting common goals and reaching out across the County will be a priority, she added. I want to provide opportunities for involvement on all levels. She faces a daunting task in 2012. Former State Representative and Ohio Democratic Party Chairman Chris Redfern is back and involved in a big way. He is running for his old seat in the state legislature and was very active in helping new Port Clinton Mayor Vince Leone defeat incumbent Debbie Hymore-Tester. Ottawa County has two elected Republicans in the Ottawa County Courthouse. Both are County Commissioners (Mark Stahl and Steve Arndt) and both will be running for re-election in November. County Auditor Jodie Regal, a Democrat, has filed to run against Stahl. There have long been philosophical differences in both major political parties due in large measure to the geographic and demographic nature of Ottawa County. Carolyn Adams, in a recent meeting with a group of Catawba Island Republican leaders, pledged to work to unite all segments of the Republican Party in the county. She told the group there is too much work to be done to spend time worrying about west end and east end issues.

Left: Bill and Carolyn Taylor were the winners of the Shark Trophy. The award is given annually to the person or persons judged to have made a major lifetime contribution to the sailing fleet at Port Clinton Yacht Club. The Taylors have donated the use of their boat for Race Committee duties at PCYCs major sailing regattas for more than 10 years. The swimming rivalry between Port Clinton and Perkins has been going on since PCHS opened their new high school in 1963. It continued last week with a dual meet last Tuesday, won by both the Perkins boys and girls teams. However, the PC girls made it close. Then last Saturday was the Sandusky Bay Conference Swimming Championships, also won by both Perkins teams. Again, the PC ladies were right there until the end. Mackenzie Stewart and Cheyenne Meek were both double winners for the Redskins, but they fell just a few points short. As we head into more events, no doubt the rivalry will continue for Dan Diaz and his swimmers.

Consignment sale comes to an end

BY LOUIS DAMSCHRODER SECRETARY/PAST ADVISOR The Oak Harbor Young Farmers group decided at its meeting last meeting month to end community activity and call a close to the annual Consignment Sale. The Young Farmers Chapter has conducted this event the first weekend in March for the past 36 years. The amount of hours in labor, and a dispute with the fair board over donations and use of the county fairgrounds lead to the decision. The Young Farmers Chapter wishes to thank the Oak Harbor community and Ottawa County for their run of consignment auctions, and for providing many dollars, which were donated back to this area in community service work. Over the past 36 years, and because of this main project and other special project donors (Pig Scramble and State Tour donors 2008), the Oak Harbor YF Chapter has given away more than $180,000. The breakdown since 1976 according to the minutes of the Oak Harbor Young Farmers shows that $143,464.61 went to the Ottawa County Fair; $17,900 to the Oak Harbor Community; $14,715 to the FFA for FFA Camp, FFA Foundation and College Scholarships; and $5,800 to the State Young Farmers Association in donations. Grants available to develop WILD School Sites

Ohio teachers who have successfully used Project WILD in their classrooms now have the opportunity to provide students with additional hands-on learning tools about wildlife and habitat through grants being offered through the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Wildlife. Grants totaling $500 each will be awarded on a competitive basis to 40 schools currently participating in Project WILD, a supplemental environmental education curriculum for grades K-12. Project WILD uses wildlife and wildlife management techniques to teach traditional school subjects such as math, science and language arts. Now in its ninth year, the grant program provides teachers with funding to purchase the materials, equipment and activities needed to develop WILD School Sites at their schools. A WILD School Site project allows teachers to take lesson plans outdoors, bringing conservation education concepts to life for students, said Jen Dennison, wildlife education coordinator for the Division of Wildlife. An added benefit is the improvement of schoolyard habitat for

Stein Hospice celebrates 30 years

When Stein Hospice opened its doors in 1981, hospice care was just starting to take root in the United States. Hospice was a new word and a new way of caring for those who were sick and dying. Now 30 years later, Stein Hospice is burgeoning. So is the national hospice movement, which is being recognized during November, National Hospice and Palliative Care Month. Coping with a life-limiting illness is not easy. Its about the most challenging thing a person will ever do, said J. Donald Schumacher, president and CEO of the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization. We want to make sure people know that help is available and thats why National Hospice and Palliative Care Month is still so important after more than 35 years of observance. Every year more than 1.5 million Americans living with a life-limiting illness and their families receive help from hospice and palliative care providers. In addition, more than 468,000 trained volunteers contribute 22 million hours of hospice service annually. Closer to home, Stein Hospice last year: Admitted 1,032 men, women and children as patients Received an average of 372 hours each week from volunteers Held Camp Good Grief in three cities (Huron, Port Clinton and Tiffin), reaching 71 children Provided more than 5,000 face-to-face grief counseling sessions In 1981, Stein Hospice began out of a tiny room in the basement of the former Providence Hospital in Sandusky. That first year, Stein cared for just 11 patients. Roland Homan was one of them. When the Monroeville farmer was told that his cancer was terminal and he had only six months to live, his family sought out Rosalie Perry, the nurse who had started the agency. Rosalie assured Rolands wife Irma that she would make her husband as comfortable as possible and follow Rolands wish to die in the hospital. Today, Irma is one of Steins biggest cheerleaders and Rolands daughter, Nancy Stallcamp is a long-time patient care volunteer for Stein. Rosalie said most of the patients in those early years had cancer. It was never true that hospice was just for cancer patients, but people seemed to believe it, she said. One of the biggest challenges was convincing a physician that talking to a patient about dying was a compassionate rather than an unkind gesture. The original name of the agency was Providence Hospital Hospice Association. The hospital funded the hospice through December 1983, when the agency became Stein Hospice to honor the generosity of Rose and Sam Stein. In those first years Stein often had more volunteers in the office than paid staff. Betty Ott started out volunteering one day a week, and before long was in the office so much they offered her a job. Now, 26 years later, Betty still works at Stein, as administrative assistant to Jan Bucholz, president and chief executive officer. During Bettys tenure, the longest of any Stein employee, she worked out of three of the four company offices. After leaving Providence, Stein moved to a little white house on Columbus Avenue, then an office on Madison Street, and finally, in 1992, into its current home at 1200 Sycamore Line. Today Stein has grown so big that one office cannot house all of its staff and services. In all, the not-for-profit agency has seven locations, including a 17-bed Care Center and offices in the Ohio Veterans Homes in Sandusky and Georgetown. Steins professional team of physicians, nurses, social workers, counselors, health aides and chaplains serve patients and families in seven counties (Erie, Huron, Ottawa, Sandusky, Seneca, Lorain, Brown) and the surrounding area. Hospice care is covered by Medicare, Medicaid and most private insurance plans, but at Stein Hospice no one is turned away because of inability to pay. As we continue to grow and plan for the next 30 years, the needs of our patients and families will remain at the forefront. Excellent, comprehensive services are and will continue to be Steins trademark, Jan Bucholz said.

Redskins looking for turnaround

BY JOHN SCHAFFNER Intensity! Just three weeks ago, the Port Clinton Redskins were in a showdown game with Perkins at home. They got blasted. Since then, they have struggled mightily, losing four more games in a row. Friday night, they were doubled up by Clyde at home and were held to under 30 points. I did not think that we were ready to play on Friday night, said Redskin head coach Troy Diels. We did not play with the energy that I would have liked to have seen out of our guys. Clyde played pretty well and they shot the ball particularly well, but we need to do a better job playing with enthusiasm, emotion and intensity. The Redskins have been having some injury issues with some of their key players. We do not know when we will get them back so we need to have our younger kids step up and play some big minutes for us, says Coach Diels. Saturday night they traveled to unbeaten and state ranked Norwalk and the result was pretty much the same, as the Truckers rolled to an 80-59 victory. Norwalk is playing very well right now, said Coach Diels. They have the ability to beat you in a variety of ways. The Thomas kid is a tremendous player for being only a sophomore. I thought we handled their pressure and traps fairly well, but we just could not match up with them on the defensive end. So, what is the solution to ending the Redskins five-game skid? We need to get better on the defensive end and we need to get the balance back in place between our perimeter players and our post players, explained Coach Diels on Tuesday morning. The Redskins are 4-7 and will play seven of their final nine games in the regular season on the road, starting with Friday nights game at Edison. We played a lot of home games so far this year, said Coach Diels. It seems like every other year we end up our home schedule early in February. We only have one more non-league game left this year and that is Fostoria in late February. Friday night, the Redskins play the SBC cellar-dwellers, Edison Chargers, who picked up their first win of the season over Monroeville last Saturday. Says Coach Diels, I am sure that win will give them some confidence going into Friday. Edison has never been very kind to us, so we need to be ready to go on Friday night.

Oak Harbor loses heartbreaker to Eastwood

BY YANEEK SMITH

But Eastwood, which trailed, 39-36, going into the fourth quarter, took control in the final period, outscoring Oak Harbor 21-16 to steal the win. With the loss, the Rockets fell to 1-9 on the season. It was a duel of sorts between Rocket guard A.J. Cecil and Eagle guard Jacob Faykosh.
