WIMES 8.05 NOTES 1. Accommodation of Innovation

Page 5

This Specification has been written to reflect the current state of the art with regard to commercial products and will have a finite life (nominally three years). The purpose of this Specification is to ensure that products supplied meet relevant safety standards, offer reasonable standards of engineering in design, materials and construction and represent value for money in both initial purchase and subsequent running costs. It is recognised that Suppliers will continue to develop products as part of the commercial process and it is not the intention of this Specification to stifle such innovation. Suppliers of products incorporating innovative design features which enhance process performance and/or reduce whole life costs, but which do not comply with this Specification, should detail these items in Appendix F, for consideration/approval by the Purchaser as part of the Tender. Suppliers are further encouraged to bring the benefits of these innovations to the attention of the Pump Centre for consideration at the next Specification review.

WIMES 8.05 APPENDIX B1 - TEXT GUIDANCE SECTION 1.0

Page 33

This Specification may also be used to procure equipment that does not actually treat the odorous air i.e. equipment that only comprises covers, ductwork, fans and a discharge stack. Equipment used for building ventilation, for health and safety purposes, is outside the scope of this Specification. SECTION 3.0, CLAUSE 2 This clause refers to the exterior conditions i.e. those not associated with the process or odorous air. SECTION 4.0 The quality and accuracy of the information provided by the Purchaser pertaining to the source(s), volume and properties of the odorous air will ultimately determine the fitness for purpose of the equipment and its whole life costs. The key items of information required by the Supplier are: Details of all process plant and equipment producing odorants. This information should ideally include the operating regimes of this equipment (i.e. the number of operating hours per day and any process fluctuations, seasonal variations etc.). It should be noted that low H2S levels do not necessarily mean low odour concentrations! The minimum rate of extraction required, from each source of odour, to prevent rogue emissions of odorants; and The mean and peak odour/odorant concentrations within each process stream and within the combined process stream.

Overestimating odour/odorant concentrations will result in oversized and possibly overcomplicated equipment with high whole life costs. Conversely, underestimating odour/odorant concentrations will result in under specified equipment that will never meet its performance requirements. Ideally, the above information should be determined from a site survey. However, in the absence of such information, the following sources of guidance may be useful: CIWEM Publication, Odour Control, ISBN 1 0870752 33 3; and UKWIR Report 01/WW/13/3, Odour control in waste water treatment. A technical reference document, ISBN 1 84057 246 9.

If the composition of the odorous air is not precisely known, the Purchaser should indicate that the information provided represents a typical composition and is not an exhaustive list of all constituents. This approach may avoid potential contractual problems.

ISSUE 1

APRIL 2003

WIMES 8.05 Section 5.2

Page 34

It is essential that the Purchaser clearly defines the relevant process performance requirement, whether this is a maximum odour concentration or the maximum concentrations of a given odorant(s) at the outlet stack or site boundary. It is impossible to speculate an odour concentration by a notional summation of threshold levels of different odorants and the result of attempting to specify everything is confusion! If odour/odorant concentrations at the site boundary are the parameters that must be controlled and volume flow and stack height/location are known, then modeling should be used to determine the stack emission levels that meet the desired requirements. Specifying too low an emission standard can substantially increase whole life costs. It is important to realise that even properly designed and operated odour control equipment will emit residual levels of odour. Determination and subsequent agreement of realistic performance targets can have a major impact on whole life costs. Specifying percentage reductions of odour/odorant concentration as a performance requirement can be problematical. If they are specified, they should be related to the peak odour/odorant concentrations. Percentage reduction should not be specified in isolation, since as odour/odorant concentrations reduce, it becomes impractical to maintain the specified percentage reductions. For example, if the peak inlet loading is say 20000 ouE/m3 and the emission standard is 2000 ouE/m3, the important performance requirement should be that 2000 ouE/m3 is not exceeded at inlet loadings of up to 20000 ouE/m3. Specifying a 90 % reduction across the board would suggest a maximum emission level of 200 ouE/m3 when operating at an inlet loading of 2000 ouE/m3, which is impossible to achieve and unnecessary. It should be noted that in order to verify equipment performance, it may be necessary to inject odour/odorants. Section 5.4.5, Clause 1 Availability is defined as:
A= MTBF MTBF + MTTR

Where: MTBF is the mean time between failures and MTTR is the mean time to repair. For the purposes of Tender evaluation, Suppliers should assume that the MTTR term only incorporates factors that are within their direct control (i.e. lead times for spares and actual repair times) and not factors such as Purchasers response time and availability of maintenance personnel. Section 6.1.1, Clause 3 It should be noted that, if the equipment does not need to actually treat the odorous air, odour treatment units and certain parts of the ductwork installation will obviously not be required.

ISSUE 1

APRIL 2003

WIMES 8.05

Page 35

Fans should usually be positioned just before the discharge stack and should draw gas through the equipment, thereby maintaining a negative pressure within the equipment. Odorous air should not be drawn from a Zone 1 hazardous area through a Zone 2 hazardous area. If a number of process units on a given site require connections to odour control equipment, the way in which they are connected together (i.e. with ductwork in series or in parallel) can have a significant influence on the performance of the equipment and on its whole life costs. Connecting units in series will tend to reduce capital expenditure on ductwork etc., however, care must be then taken to avoid subsequent operational problems such as stagnation of air flow and inability to treat odour if one of the units connected in series needs to be isolated. Section 6.1.3.1, Clause 4 Unreinforced PVC-U ductwork should not be installed outdoors, as it is susceptible to embrittlement by ultra-violet radiation. Section 6.1.3.1, Clause 8 Secondary fixtures and fixings refers to clamps and brackets etc. Primary fixtures and fixings such as beams or stanchions may be made from plain carbon steel, as long as it is provided with suitable corrosion protection. Section 6.1.3.1, Clause 13 Earthing of ductwork is expensive and should only be specified if the Purchaser has performed a risk assessment that indicates that there would be a significant explosion hazard from unearthed equipment. Section 6.1.3.2, Clause 3 Stainless steel may be unsuitable for some duties. Section 6.1.5, Clause 1 Tanks and vessels made from thermoplastic materials should be designed, constructed and tested in accordance with DVS 2205, Part 1, June 1987 (Design Calculations for Containers and Apparatus made from Thermoplastics - Characteristic Values) and Part 5, July 1987 (Calculation of Thermoplastic Tanks and Apparatus - Rectangular Tanks). These documents are published by the Deutscher Verband fr Schweisstechnik, which is the German Welding Engineering Association. Section 6.1.5, Clause 3 Stainless steel is unsuitable for use with sodium hypochlorite. Polymeric materials should be used instead. Section 6.1.6, Clause 2 For GAC units, multiple sampling points may be required throughout the treatment stage bed to track the breakthrough of H2S.

The hazardous area may arise due to the location of the equipment on site or as a result of the process environment produced within/around the equipment due to the nature of its operation. Section 6.2.1, Clause 2 Certain components incorporated in the ancillary systems may be common to more than one treatment unit (e.g. scrubbing liquid dosing or re-circulating pumps). Section 6.2.1, Clause 4 The Purchaser should detail any requirements for the redundancy of individual components/systems (e.g. dosing pumps etc.) or even complete process streams! Section 6.3.1, Clause 3 The Purchaser should detail any requirements for the redundancy of individual components/systems (e.g. media re-generation systems etc.) or even complete process streams! Section 6.3.2, Clause 5 Dry treatment units may incorporate more than one type of treatment media. Section 6.4.1, Clause 3 The Purchaser should detail any requirements for the redundancy of individual components/systems (e.g. media irrigation systems etc.) or even complete process streams! Section 6.5.1.1, Clause 4 The Purchaser should detail any requirements for the redundancy of individual components/systems (e.g. media irrigation systems etc.) or even complete process streams! Section 6.5.2.1, Clause 2 Certain components incorporated in the ancillary systems may be common to more than one treatment unit (e.g. scrubbing liquid make-up/re-circulating pumps). Section 6.5.2.1, Clause 4 The Purchaser should detail any requirements for the redundancy of individual components/systems (e.g. dosing pumps etc.) or even complete process streams! Section 7.2.1.1, Clause 2 Biological treatment methods require a certain incubation of time for biological activity to develop to enable the specified performance to be achieved. This factor should be reflected in the timescales required for performance testing.

CEN/TC264/WG2 is a CEN Working Group formed to produce a European Standard for odour concentration measurements using dynamic olfactometry. EN 13725, Air Quality Measurement of odour concentration by dynamic olfactometry, should be issued in 2003. Section 7.2.3 The plastic ductwork constructional standards imposed by DW154 have virtually negated the requirement for leakage testing. Where not mandatory, leakage testing of plastic ductwork should generally be viewed as an unjustified expense. A thorough visual inspection should usually suffice. Leakage testing of sheet metal ductwork is retained as an option.

As well as the obvious, large magnitude loads, full consideration shall also be given to lower magnitude, longer duration loads, due to the time dependent response of GRP. Many GRP cover structures comprise repetitive patterns of panels or beams and panels. Full consideration shall be given to the effects of variably distributed loads upon such covers, particularly due to environmental effects (e.g. snow drifting), as these may induce buckling.

4.

The following loads shall considered during cover design: Origin of Load Cover self weight Process pressure Wind Type of Load Dead Imposed Imposed Typical Duration of Load Cover supplier to assess 20 years Purchaser to specify* 20 years Purchaser to specify site Transient details*. Plant and Imposed equipment** Installation and Dead removal * - Refer to DATA SHEET. ** - Refer to Guidance Notes. 5.

If covers incorporate designated walkways (Supplier to refer to Purchasers design drawings for details), the walkway shall be considered as a roof with access in accordance with BS 6399-3. In addition to the loads detailed in clause 4, above, covers shall be designed to withstand the following loads: a) A soft body impact equivalent to a 50 kg sand bag dropped from a height of 2 m; and b) A hard body impact equivalent to a 1 kg steel ball dropped from a height of 1 m.

6.

G6.2.2 Stress Levels G6.2.2.1 Calculation of Applied Stresses 1. The applied stress in the laminate shall be calculated using the loads detailed in Section G6.2.1 multiplied by the load factors given in the following table: Definition of Load Dead load Process pressure Imposed load Wind Exceptional snow drift Mechanical Handling Typically Arising From: Self Weight Internal process pressure Access/maintenance/uniform snow Load Factor 1.4 1.4 1.6* 1.2* 1.4 1.2** 1.1 3.0

* - For steeply pitched covers or circular tanks where the pitch exceeds 15, the load factor may be reduced, at the Suppliers discretion, to a minimum of 1.2. This decision shall be based on the type of access provided and the requirement for future access to service plant. ** - A value of 1.2 may be used for the imposed and wind load factors when the two loads are considered in conjunction, as such combinations are statistically improbable.

G6.2.2.2 Calculation of Allowable Stresses 1. For a given laminate property such as tensile strength, the allowable stress in the laminate shall be calculated by dividing the characteristic stress by the product of several factors (refer to clause 2, below). Characteristic stresses for a range of properties and types of reinforcement are as follows (Data from reference 1 ): Tensile Modulus Compressive Modulus Tensile Strength Lap Shear Strength Compressive Strength Shear Modulus MPa 2400 2400 3200 5200 4000 Type of Reinforcement StrengthIn-plane Shear Bearing Strength MPa 130 130 260 *2 *2 Volume Fraction

2.

The various factors to be incorporated in these calculations (refer to clause 1, above) are as follows: Fabrication Method Factor (see clause 3, below) Low level QC High level QC Handwork 1.2 1.0 Spray deposition 1.6 1.2 Automated process (e.g. pultrusion, RTM with pre-forms). N/A 0.9 Closed mould process (e.g. infusion processes, RTM), N/A 1.0 Properties Data Factor (see clause 4, below) Not Tested Tested From Table in clause 1. 1.0 0.9 Theoretical calculation using laminate theory 1.2 1.0 Historical data for identical materials 1.2 1.0 Mechanical testing of ply of identical construction 1.0 0.9 Cure Temperature Factor (see clause 5, below) Not Postcured Postcured HDT </= 60C 1.2 1.1 60C < HDT < 80C 1.1 1.0 HDT >/= 80C 1.0 0.95 Resin Suitability Factor (see clause 6, below) Generic resin system 1.1 Resin system specified by the resin manufacturer to be suitable for duty 1.0 Stress Analysis Factor (see clause 7, below) Hand Calculation 1.1 Finite element analysis (FEA) 1.0 Load Duration Factor (see clause 8, below) CSM/WR UD Transient (e.g. wind, man access, load-out) 1.3 1.3 1 day (e.g. maintenance) 1.7 1.3 3 months (e.g. snow) 2.1 1.4 25 years (e.g. self weight and process pressure) 5.2 1.63 Abbreviations: CSM - chopped strand mat, continuous filament mat or sprayed rovings. HDT heat deflection temperature. UD - unidirectional cloth, unidirectional rovings and non-crimp multiaxial cloths, loaded in the fibre direction. WR - woven rovings.

3.

The fabrication method factor is a function of the level of process control intrinsic to a given method of fabrication and the level of process control enforced by varying levels of quality control (QC). High level QC would typically involve full documentation of the fabrication process and include as a minimum, regular in-process checking of individual plies, checking of finished thickness on all products at all key positions and final Barcol hardness checks. The properties data factor is a function of the reliability/quality of the materials property data used calculate the allowable stress in the laminate. If the design incorporates data obtained from mechanical testing of cut-outs from the laminate, a reduced factor is appropriate, provided that the measured properties satisfy the design criteria.

4.

5.

The cure temperature factor is a function of the likely sensitivity of the resin to thermal degradation during service, based on the degree of resin curing during laminate fabrication.. This factor is also a function of the sensitivity of the laminate to shrinkage stresses and corrosion. Fabrication methods such as pultrusion, that involve high temperature cure processes, may utilise the postcured factors. The resin suitability factor is a function of the likely suitability of the resin system for the service environment. Where a specific, as opposed to a generic, resin type is used, selection of resin type by the resin supplier shall be based on an accurate chemical analysis of the odorous air. The stress analysis factor is a function of the method of stress analysis used to predict the applied stress in the laminate. If finite element analysis (FEA) is used and the results are verified by full scale testing of the laminates, the analysis factor may be reduced, at the Designers discretion, to a minimum value of 0.9. The loading duration factor introduces an element of conservatism into the laminate design to ensure that that the laminate can tolerate many repeated loading events without the risk of creep-rupture, provided that there are lengthy periods between the loading events. If covers are flat and/or likely to pond, full consideration should also be given to creep deformation. The above factors are derived from log-time curves and may not be interpolated. For filled resin systems, the 25 year duration factors shall be applied for all conditions, unless testing data is available on identical laminates to justify lower factors. If large numbers of loading cycles are envisaged (in excess of 1000) the factor k 4 from Figure 2 of BS 4994 shall also be applied (refer to Guidance Notes).

6.

7.

8.

9.

10. For in-situ laminating or in-situ adhesive bonding, a further factor between 1.1 to 2.0 shall be applied. The factor used shall be based upon the complexity of the work, the potential exposure and sensitivity to detrimental weather conditions and the level of process control applied. Use of lower values shall only be used where the laminating is performed within a suitable enclosure with appropriate heating and a high level of inspection at key stages. G6.2.2.3 Utilisation Level 1. Utilisation level is defined as the applied stress divided by the allowable stress. The utilisation level of every ply of the laminate shall be calculated; utilisation levels greater than 1.0 shall not be acceptable.

G6.2.3 Stability 1. 2. The covers shall be designed against instability such as lateral torsional buckling, global buckling, strut buckling etc. using recognised methods or documented testing. Against the characteristic load, a minimum factor of safety against buckling in excess of 4.0 shall be applied (provided that the stress distribution of the buckled form does not cause the utilisation to exceed 1.0, the minimum factor of safety against buckling may be relaxed to 3.0. Such verification shall incorporate the use of non-linear FEA). Circular covers shall be checked against snap through buckling and buckling arising from unequal load distributions.

3.

G6.2.4 Deformation 1. No element of the structure shall deform in excess of 1/150th of the clear span under any imposed loading. If structures comprise several elements, consideration shall be given to the global deflection of the structure to ensure surface water run-off and operational requirements. The deflection of the structure or individual elements of the structure shall be designed for and shall not reduce the fall for free drainage of rainfall below 1 in 50, unless otherwise specified on the DATA SHEET.

2.

G6.2.5 Design of Structural Connections G6.2.5.1 Bolted Joints 1. The design of bolted joints shall consider: a) b) c) d) The bearing stress in the laminate and fastener; The shear stress in the laminate and fastener; Local flexure in the laminate; and Load sharing within large bolt groups.

G6.2.5.2 Bonded Joints 1. 2. 3. The design of bonded joints shall comply with the guidance given in reference 1 (with particular reference to Section 8.10). Only proprietary adhesives or bonding pastes shall be used, as opposed to laminating resin, which is too brittle. The selection of adhesives or bonding pastes shall give proper consideration to joint thickness, handling time, surface preparation, design temperature and chemical environment as well as strength. Particular care shall be taken when selecting adhesives that will be used on site, in which case, temperature or moisture sensitive adhesives shall be avoided. Structural joints shall be designed using the methodologies provided in references 3 and 4. Alternatively the joint may be modeled by FEA. When designing adhesive joints, local bending in single lap joints shall be considered. The allowable stress within the joint shall be derived using similar factors to those obtained for the laminate. These factors should be based upon handwork CSM with the factor for a 25 year load duration being used in all cases.

4. 5. 6.

G6.2.6 Design of Structural Inserts 1. Proper consideration shall be given to the local stresses present at structural inserts to prevent shearing of the laminate or lap-shear failure of encapsulating laminates. For lifting points in particular, vectored loads that will induce local rotations and/or unequal shear distributions shall be considered.

G6.2.7 Design of Sandwich Laminates 1. Sandwich laminates shall generally be designed using FEA software. If these laminates are designed by hand, calculation of the following aspects shall be considered within the calculations: a) b) c) d) 2. 3. Shear deflection; Skin compression wrinkling; Shear stress in the core material; and Local crushing of the core material.

The shear strength of the core material shall exceed 0.2 MPa. Suitable design methodology for sandwich laminates is provided in reference 5.

APPENDIX G3 - TEXT GUIDANCE Section G5.2.1 An example of a difficult to seal installation would be an inlet works incorporating penstocks, screens etc. For these installations, the % of the air extracted for treatment, that is drawn through the designated cover air intakes, may be specified to be lower than 60 % due to the difficulty of achieving a good seal around certain components/systems. Section G6.2.1, Clause 4 It is inadvisable to transfer plant and equipment loads to covers, however, if such loads are unavoidable, they should be described fully to the Supplier. This description should include any potential dynamic load characteristics, together with an indication of the load factor to be applied and the duration of the load. Guidance may be found in modern structural codes such as BS 5950. Section G6.2.2.2, Clause 9 If possible, alternating loads (that could cause fatigue damage) should not be transferred to covers. Section G6.3.1.1, Clause 1 The type of resin selected should be based on the composition of the odorous air and/or any condensates that could come into contact with the covers. It is important that the cover supplier selects the correct type of resin for a given cover application; over-specification will significantly increase costs, whereas under-specification may cause premature cover failure. Ideally, the resin supplier should be consulted during resin selection. Section G6.1.3.4, Clause 1 Certain core materials such as marine plywood and end grain balsa can swell if exposed to moisture, leading to cover distortion/failure. If covers incorporating these materials are modified or cut after installation, it is essential that any exposed core sections are properly repaired. Section G6.4, Clause 5 A useful reference guide to potential defects in GRP components is given in Neogel Gelcoats Application and Troubleshooting Guide published by DSM Composite Resins.

APPENDIX G4 - DATA SHEET GUIDANCE 1. Items to be completed by the Purchaser are marked (o) and by the Supplier (x). Items which the Purchaser may wish to specify, or alternatively may wish to leave to the Supplier to complete are marked (ox). The Purchaser may customise the DATA SHEETS included in Appendix G5 to provide for: a) the Purchasers name, issue reference, format for inclusion of Contract/Project title and references etc. b) the Purchasers standard technical and procedural requirements which apply to every Contract/Project carried out for the Purchaser provided that such inclusions comply with the requirements indicated in clause 5 below. 3. 4. 5. 6. Reference numbers incorporated on the DATA SHEETS in Appendix G5 relate to Sections or Clauses, as appropriate, within Appendix G1. The technical content, its arrangement and any incorporated reference to Appendix G1 shall not be altered from the form shown on the DATA SHEETS in Appendix G5. The person(s) responsible for completing the DATA SHEETS shall only employ the form of DATA SHEET approved for use by the Purchaser. The DATA SHEETS should be completed by ticking the feature(s) required or by entering requirements or information, as appropriate, in the column/row adjacent to the feature description. Where there is a need for the Purchaser to enter more information on the DATA SHEETS than space permits, a reference should be entered as to where the requirement is specified. This approach may be used where: a) further clarification or definition is required on a feature description, or b) the feature description needs to be read in conjunction with another Standard or Specification applicable to the Contract/Project, or c) a particular feature or arrangement is not listed on the DATA SHEETS, in which case the option Other (specify) should be used. The referencing system employed shall be defined in the Contract/Project documentation. 8. Where there is a need for the Supplier to enter more information on the DATA SHEETS than space permits, this information should be given in Appendix G6 and cross-referenced to the relevant Specification clause. This approach may be used where: a) further clarification or definition is required on a feature description, or b) a particular feature or arrangement is not listed on the DATA SHEETS, in which case the option Other (specify) should be used and the words Appendix G6 entered in the adjacent column.
