Learn to Read Jacksonville (LTR)

Job Description: Literacy Tutor


Report to: Literacy Volunteer Coordinator Function: To provide individualized instruction in reading and writing to an adult, sixteen years or older who is not enrolled in a traditional program.

Specific Responsibilities
Complete Tutor Training and continuing education requirements o Training required and Time Commitment Pre-service: Prior to Tutor Training Workshop, complete three free online one hour literacy workshops chosen by LTR and submit certificates of completion Pre-service: 7 hour in person Tutor Training Workshop One two (2) hour Continuing Education Workshops per year At least 1 hour per week student instruction Lesson preparation (varies depending on individual and material being used) Travel time (depends on tutoring site) Record keeping and reporting (approximately 1 hour per month) Plan and conduct at least one tutoring session per week. Submit required monthly program reports to indicate o Student progress, goals, and achievements o Number of hours of instruction, homework, and travel time the student had that month o The number of hours the tutor spent in lesson preparation, tutoring the student, and traveling o Any other form required by the program, such as: Checkups, sample of student writings, verification of employment or promotion, etc. Recommended you keep for your own record: o Initial information Date you first contacted the student and date tutoring began List of student goals o For each lesson Lesson date and length A description of what was covered and what materials were used Notes on what skills need reinforcement in future lessons

Maintain contact with the program. Notify the LTR Program Coordinators immediately: o Of any change in contact information (for student or tutor) o Of any decision (by student or tutor) to terminate involvement in the program or to discontinue tutoring for more than 2 weeks o When the student is having difficulty or is not challenged with the current skill book level.

List of possible tutoring sites (in a public place; no tutoring in private homes) Continuing Education Workshops offered biannually Access to LTR lending library and Thinkfinity website for free additional information and courses Monthly email with program updates and tutor resources Access to literacy information via Literacy Link Instructional materials to work with student, includes tutor manual and student skill book

Recognition Provided Yearly Celebration of Success Awards based on number of volunteer hours Additional various opportunities throughout the year

Qualification and Fees


High school diploma or equivalent Ability to read, write, and speak English effectively Able to make a commitment for at least one year Willingness to learn new skills and new approaches Respect for and a willingness to work with people who come from different cultures, races, ethnic background, or economic levels; and who may have different religious beliefs or values Willingness to work with the student as a peer and to involve the student in all major decisions about instruction Pass background screening

Fees and contributions $25.00 registration fee, $50.00 fee if not tutoring a LTR student. As a contribution to adult literacy efforts, option to purchase tutor manual
