german demand has solar scrambling

Canadian Solar Inc. is scrambling to ramp up production of solar panels to meet an unexpected surge in demand from Europe, chief executive Shawn Qu said on Tuesday. German customers, in particular, have increased orders in anticipation of a reduction in the governments subsidy for solar energy in the coming months, Qu said. Canadian Solars shares, which were down about 9%, briefly moved into positive territory before settling down about 7.5% at $3.82 on the Nasdaq. In addition to the strong increase in demand, the Chinese New Year holiday also took a toll on Canadian Solars ability to boost production, Qu said. Canadian Solar is based in Ontario, but has most of its operations in China.

bump in barbie price

Prices of Mattel Inc. toys such as Barbie dolls and Hot Wheels cars have gone up as the company tries to compensate for increasing costs for materials like resin and rising wages in China. The worlds largest toy company, which sees input, labour and transportation costs rising in 2012, said on Tuesday that it had raised prices at a mid-single-digit rate on Jan. 1 with the goal of keeping gross margins at around 50%. The news came on the same day Mattel reported a higher-thanexpected quarterly profit. Mattel stock was up 5.1% at $31.03 after rising as high as $31.49 earlier in the session. Barbie registered its second consecutive double-digit sales rise in the quarter, but growth slowed to 4% internationally following three consecutive quarters with increases of about 20%. Reuters
