By Samantha Bubar f you like racing- the Barre Town R/C Speedway is the place for you. The Barre Town R/C Speedway is the only racing in the winter according to member and front-man Chris Facini. The Barre Town R/C Speedway is the only banked speedway in New England. Most tracks are flat tracks; ours is physically built with banks. Its very unique, said member Erik Steel. Erik has been a member for about five years, but has been involved off and on since he was 16. I came and watched my first time, one of the guys let me try their car, then I was hooked, said Steel, Just the same would happen if somebody came in this weekend, somebody would cough up a car and youd be trying it. Currently there are 12 to 15 members and they are looking to increase membership. If youre interested in racing, all you have to do is stop in to 15 Sherman Drive in South Barre on a Sunday. The doors open at 8:30 A.M., the races start at 11 A.M. and usually go until 3:30 P.M. For those that do show up, the members are more than willing to help. Facini said, All the guys are extremely friendly and always willing to help. Facini got his first car about 15 years ago. He heard about the speedway when he was in grade school and he started with nothing. Gradually people started helping him get what he needed and he has been involved ever since. He has eight cars now as well as used parts for others that are just getting started. It takes roughly $300 to $400 to get started

with a used car. According to Steel, These arent Radio Shack off-the-wall cars, theyre custom built machines. Its a skilled hobby for sure. For those looking to get started, they also offer rental cars and trucks as well as a payment plan to help with costs. There are three specialty races a year that include prizes and trophies as well as the races every Sunday. These three specialty races generate 50 to 60 racers. They just held a memorial race for Gary Ducky Sweet in January, who was a prominent member in the club. Our ambassador is no longer with us, said Steel. Racers are seated based on their qualifying times. There are three separate five minute qualifiers every Sunday. Race times are generally five minutes long. There are divisions from novice to pro with different cars, electronics and motors. Steel pointed out that theyre a small group, looking to get bigger. They keep track of points every week and crown a winner at the end of the season. Local sponsors help with fuel, rent, electricity as well as sponsoring races. Steel also mentioned that theyre always on the lookout for potential sponsors or anyone that wants to donate or help in any way. The Mt. Mansfield Union Cougars held the Spaulding Crimson Tide boys varsity basketball team to 4 points in the first quarter and a 12 point first half compared to their 37 point first half in Barre last Thursday evening. After the break the Tide out scored the Cougars 18-9 in the third quarter to close the gap down to a 30-46 deficit. Unable to stop the Cougars, Spaulding fell 62-41. Evan Grubb of Spaulding had 17 points and team mate Brooks Mayo collected 8 points. Cougars Eric Suder had game high 20 points and team mate Tom Lacy had 18 points. From the foul stripe the Tide shot 5 for 7 and the Cougars 9 for 19.

With the score tied 1-1 after overtime one might think the Spaulding Tide girls ice hockey match with the South Burlington Rebels was an evenly played game at Barres BOR last Wednesday. South Burlingtons goal keeper Coutney Barrett knows there was a difference in that she worked 36 saves to Spauldings goal keeper Morgan Gosselin 6 saves. Tide skated clean on the ice gathering no penalties to the Rebels 7 penalties. Anne-Marie Farmer of the Rebels scored the matchs first goal unassisted at 8:14 of the second period. Tides Julia Ormsby tied the game at 4:20 of the third period with assists from Beth Scott and Ellen Gosselin. Spauldings record goes to 9-3-1 and South Burlingtons to 6-3-3.
