Comparing the cost of studying

All the distance learning qualifications we offer have the same status as those studied on a university campus so we can make a direct cost comparison. Reports from the National Union of Students estimate that sixth formers starting university this year expect to pay up to 27,000 for a three-year degree course. As a result, they expect to graduate with 32,000 of debt. By studying a university degree by distance learning with RDI this means you could save at least 43,373 over the same timescale. You could also be three years further ahead in your career than a full-time university student. So choosing to study a university distance learning can save you money and progress qualification with your career.

Self-improvement, higher qualifications, an increased salary and a better job are the obvious benefits. But it isnt just about money and jobs, it is also about feeling good about yourself by fulfilling your potential and proving to yourself that youve got what it takes.

I found the experience of distance learning excellent as I like to manage my own time and found the flexibility brilliant. I would highly recommend this method of learning to anyone juggling a job at the same time. Ruth Tinsley Diploma in Management

Frequently Asked Questions

Some frequently asked questions and answers follow. Should you have any other questions please call one of our programme advisors on

FREEphone 0800 COURSES / 0800 268 7737

Application and enrolment
Q: Will I be able to afford it? How do I pay? A: Paying for your studies is an investment in your future. It should not be viewed as an expense or cost because there is clear evidence to show that qualifications lead to an increase in salary. However, paying for your studies is not always easy, so we suggest you consider the various funding options on page 6. Q: What do the fees include? A: All study materials, either text-based or online and student handbooks are supplied. For many of our programmes core text books are also included. You will be allocated a tutor for academic support who you can contact as often as you like by email and telephone. You will also have access to a programme co-ordinator for administrative support. There is no application or enrolment fee, this service is completely free of charge. Q: I have plenty of work experience in my area of interest but no real qualifications. Can I still apply? A: For many courses, experience can be just as valuable as qualifications so if you havent studied for a while you need not be at a disadvantage. Each applicant is considered on his or her individual merits. Please call one of our experienced, friendly programme advisors to check your eligibility on FREEphone 0800 COURSES / 0800 268 7737. Q: I already have a qualification. Will this qualification allow me to gain exemptions from the course and will the cost be reduced? A: Different procedures apply for different programmes. It is often possible to gain exemptions based on previous qualifications and work experience. The best way to find out is to apply. All applications for exemptions will be considered on merit. If exemptions are granted the cost of the programme may not necessarily be affected. Q: What is the difference between the MBA programmes that you offer? A: We offer three MBAs to suit different needs. The Bradford MBA carries AMBA and EQUIS accreditation from a top 10 UK business school and is supported by the universitys online Global Campus. The University of Wales MBA offers modular payments, a variety of specialisms and delivery is via ilearn RDIs virtual learning environment. The University of Sunderland MBA is a top-up, and allows direct entry for holders of a relevant postgraduate diploma. Our Programme Advisors are happy to discuss the range of study options available to you.

Studying and study materials

Q: How does distance learning work? A: Distance learning is off campus, flexible learning that allows you to study a UK university accredited programme at home or work when its convenient for you. You are provided with professionally developed study materials. The study materials have been developed to provide sequential learning with continual access to self-assessment and task based progress measurement. You will be allocated a tutor for academic support who you can contact as often as you like by email and telephone. You will also have access to a student support co-ordinator who will be there for administrative advice to make your learning experience successful and enjoyable. For most of our programmes you will also have access to RDIs virtual learning environment, ilearn. You will be able to access course information, tasks/activities, engage in discussions with tutors and fellow students, access the online library and download past papers and assignments. Q: Are the study materials text-based or online? A: Study materials are text-based or online or a mixture of both, depending on which programme you choose. You will receive everything you require to successfully complete your programme. Q: Do I need a computer? A: We recommend you have access to a computer with access to the internet and email as a minimum for all of our programmes. For some programmes there are specific software requirements. Please contact on FREEphone 0800 COURSES / 0800 268 7737 for further information.

and does not replace the normal comprehensive paper based study materials. Q: How long does it take? A: It depends on the programme but most programmes have a minimum and maximum study period. Generally you will spend as much or as little time as you would if you were taking the programme by formal part-time study but this is, of course, very flexible. Q: I work full-time and have a family, how will I find the time? A: Flexibility is key. All of our programmes allow you to work full-time as you can fit your studies around your job and personal commitments. Our programmes require from as little as 7 hours per week study time. Your student support coordinator is always on hand should you need any help with handing in assignments, logging into ilearn or deferring your studies. In most cases, you can take up to five years or more to complete your programme, although many complete within one or two years. Q: Can I study anywhere in the world? A: Yes. Programmes are flexible with study materials that allow you to study completely independently. You will log in to the virtual learning environment and interact with your tutors and peers as part of your studies. The only compulsory campus attendance is normally for examination purposes, which can be arranged locally if you are overseas. Q: Is the certificate the same as that which campus students receive? A: Yes. The final certificate that you receive will be awarded directly from the university, and will be exactly the same as if you had studied on campus. Q: How many hours per week should I devote? A: We recommend between 8 and 15 hours per week, depending on the programme. Flexible learning is about good time planning and building momentum. It is also about self-motivation. Regular study is more effective than heavy but intermittent periods of study. Always plan to spend as much time on the programme as you would by part-time formal study. Q: What if I need more time to complete my studies, can I take a break? A: If you fall behind, become ill, relocate or need to defer your studies we will always try our best to accommodate you and your student support co-ordinator will be on hand to explain the options available to you. Q: What happens if I fail something? A: Dont worry, if you fail an assessment you are allowed at least one resubmission. Your academic tutor will provide you with detailed feedback to help prepare you for your resubmission. Q: How do I sit exams? A: UK students can sit their examinations at s Midland Management Centre in Coventry or at any other pre-approved venue with the help of our examinations coordinator. Examinations can be arranged locally, although this will incur an additional charge. Q: Is there a graduation ceremony? A: For most of our university accredited programmes you will be invited to a formal graduation ceremony, usually held on the university campus with full time students.

A message from RDIs CEO The Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) offers the opportunity for you to reach the pinnacle of your field, demonstrating dedication, competence and research expertise within the business arena. Your DBA will require you to advance the boundaries of management knowledge and to develop a piece of original work evidencing your contribution to worldleading community that drives business forward and establishing yourself as a leader within your chosen field. From personal experience of doctorate research and supervising others at a doctoral level, I have discovered that only those with sufficient long term drive and commitment will succeed which is one of the reasons the doctoral community is so highly respected.

Structure & Content

The programme is designed to provide an opportunity for students to obtain a DBA by means of independent study supported by online distance learning resources and academic support. The DBA programme forms two stages of research. The first stage follows rigorous development of a students investigative, research and planning skills through reflective practice, research methods and design - fully preparing them for successful completion of the second stage an independent piece of research contributing to development of management knowledge and practice.

Research Methods (30 credits) Students will be introduced to a range of qualitative and quantitative research methods that will enable them to make informed choices as to the methods of data collection and analysis used in their own research projects. Students will identify a management issue and develop and implement a research project to investigate this issue. Indicative Content: Qualitative methods such as interviews, observation, ethnography, documentary analysis, focus groups, case studies, pictorial representation, diaries, stories and life stories Qualitative data analysis Questionnaire design Survey and sampling methods Measurement Quantitative methods such as exploratory data analysis, statistical hypothesis testing, ANOVA, multivariate regression analysis, principal component analysis and cluster analysis Using SPSS for data analysis Presenting data and reporting findings Action learning and action research NVivo and NUD*IST (software) Research Design (30 credits) This module will prepare you for transfer to Stage 2 of the programme the doctoral thesis. Students will prepare a research proposal for the intended doctoral thesis. The proposal will demonstrate that the work will be characterised by advanced learning based on professional capability and in depth research and development leading to substantial projects which achieve major organisational change and/or excellence in professional practice. Indicative Content: The philosophy of knowledge Research methodologies Research tools Developing a research question, searching and using literature Designing a study Obstacles to data gathering Writing a proposal

Detailed Programme Structure Research Stage 1

Reflective Practice (60 credits) This module focuses on two key areas. Firstly, management students are notoriously poor at self-reflection as a consideration of MBA dissertations will signify. Requiring students to go through a process of self-reflection will inform them about their strengths and weaknesses and learning preferences and so aid them in the eventual thesis development. This process will enhance the self-awareness and therefore, it is anticipated, the managerial effectiveness of the candidate with a strong reflective ethos. Secondly, consultancy skills. The ability to make a consultancy type intervention is an important one for managers and it is likely that as part of the research that such an event would be called for. Developing and applying those skills would be useful both in their own terms but also as part of the research training effort. Students will therefore evaluate themselves against current and potential roles and design and implement an action to plan to address key development needs within the context of the design and delivery of a consultancy project intervention. Students will be required to undertake a consultancy project which should have some change management implications for the organisation. Indicative Content: Undertake self-analysis and profiling using professional tools Models of reflective practice e.g. Schon; Kolb; and Atkins and Murphy Development and use of the process of reflection upon professional practice Demonstrate reflective activities as part of professional decision making Working in groups Design and implementation of personal development plans Action learning sets The role of the consultant Ethical behaviour Project management techniques The consultancy cycle Theories of change management

Studying By Distance Learning

Undertaking a distance learning MBA at the Bradford University School of Management is a highly rewarding experience: You will learn new skills which you can use straight away in the work place You will be able to use the knowledge gained to advance your career You will be able to develop an international business network, learning from the experiences of your fellow students. Students are expected to take 2 subjects (modules) every three months. Each module contains 9 study units. Students typically progress by studying 1 unit from each module per week. This equates to approximately 14-16 hours of study per week. If you dont think that you have enough time to study 2 modules over the three month period you can always chose to study just one module, lightening your workload considerably. If work or family life is particularly busy then you can even suspend your studies and restart at a later date. This flexibility means that students can complete the MBA in 2 to 6 years. We do, however, strongly advise that students study 2 modules every 3 months.

The Bradford MBA Learning Experience

Bradford University School of Management has been providing students with an opportunity to study for an MBA via distance learning since 1998. This is achieved through the use of small faculty led tutor groups, weekly online discussions, live face-to-face on line tutorial sessions and a distance learner online social space called The Atrium. Further to this while you do not have to attend any on-site teaching you will have an opportunity to take part in faceto-face teaching sessions with academics from the School of Management in Bradford and at its partner institutions in the Netherlands, Germany, Hong Kong, Singapore, Dubai, the Philippines and Italy (subject to availability). If you need to sit an exam Bradford has examination centres worldwide, making it highly likely that there is an exam centre near you. There are four enrolment opportunities throughout the year in September, January, April and July.

Duration of Programme
The Bradford School of Management distance learning MBA allows students to vary the speed of their progression through the programme to suit their own individual needs. As such, you can choose to take just one module in a quarter or defer your studies altogether, for a short period of time. Distance learning students usually however study 2 modules every 3 months. Each module is split into 9 units (8 learning units and 1 revision unit). Students are expected to work through 1 unit per module per week. This format ensures that students have a number of weeks at the end of the module for examination revision (if the module is assessed by an exam) assignment work and general recuperation. Through completing 2 modules every 3 months by the end of year 1 students will have studied 8 modules. In year 2, progressing at the same rate, students take the remaining 2 compulsory modules and 4 cycle 2 modules. The completion of these remaining modules takes 9 months. In the final 3 months students start (and can complete) the management project. Many students see the management project as a key part of the MBA experience, putting the skills they have learnt into practice. To facilitate this learning experience Bradford allow students to register for the management project at a time that is convenient to them. Once a student has registered for the management project we allow the student up to 12 months to complete the project. As a general guide the programme can be completed in 2-6 years. On average students take 3 years to complete the programme.

Once a student has started their MBA studies with Bradford School of Management they will be required to complete a short exercise enabling them to assess their numerical and verbal reasoning skills. Students with a GMAT of 600+ attained in the last two years are not required to complete this exercise. It may be the case that you are a highly motivated applicant with a proven track record and a wealth of highly relevant work experience but you do not have the required academic qualifications. If this is the case you may well still be eligible for the Bradford MBA and as such you are encouraged to submit an application.

Enrolment Dates
There are four enrolment opportunities throughout the year in September, January, April and July.

Programme Fees
The Bradford MBA is competitively priced at 12,950. Please contact us for further information regarding instalment plans.

Psychology Pathway

BSc (Hons) Psychology (Applied) Anglia Ruskin University

Qualification
On successful completion of the programme you will be awarded a BSc (Hons) Psychology (Applied). and the impact of these on social and emotional development. Key areas within social psychology (attitudes, interpersonal communication, social influence, groups, identities and ethics) and developmental psychology (genetic and environmental influences, language, cognitive and emotional development and ethics) are covered. 4. Issues in Child Development and Social Psychology This module introduces you to more specific domains of child development and social psychology. This module carries slightly greater focus on developmental psychology. However, each topic covered builds on previously covered topics; ending with an overview of normal and non-normal developmental profiles. Similarly, each topic in the social part to some extent builds on earlier topics. These begin with applied social cognition, and will also consider social psychology in a court setting. 5. Theoretical Foundations in Psychology This module will provide you with an overview of the theoretical, philosophical and historical foundations of psychology. Often defined as the science of the mind, you will be made aware that there has been much debate as to how to define both science and mind. To illustrate these debates the module focuses on different approaches to psychology, for example: introspectionism, behaviourism, psychoanalysis, cognitive psychology, and artificial intelligence. 6. Introduction to Abnormal & Health Psychology You will examine the way in which these disciplines apply psychological knowledge to an understanding of health and illness, and the interventions used to improve health or relieve the symptoms of illness. You will examine how concepts of health have changed over time, what is meant by normality and abnormality, and the different models that psychologists have used to understand the causes of mental ill-health. You will examine specific health problems, both physical and mental, including eating disorders, stress, trauma, and sexual disorders. 7. The Psychology of Everyday Life During this module you will look at a number of topical issues in order to demonstrate how psychology can provide insight into peoples behaviour, and how we benefit from a scientific psychological approach. Topics included will depend upon the interests and expertise of the academic staff involved in teaching this module and therefore may vary from time to time. However, questions which might be addressed include: Does criminal profiling work? Can we measure intelligence? Why do we sleep? Do dreams have meaning? Why do we forget things? How accurate are eyewitness accounts of crime? 8. Fundamentals of Cognitive Psychology Our experience of the world is an interpretation

on social and collective processes (for example, social constructionism). 6. Learning, Memory and Perception Underlying all psychological functioning is the ability to perceive, remember, and alter our behaviour in response to information in the world. These basic psychological processes of perception, memory and learning were the first areas of study for empirical psychology and this module examines both the historical development of these areas as well as the current state of knowledge in each area. 7. Psychopathology This module will introduce you to the various psychological disorders, as well as their aetiology and treatment. This module will also look at models of psychopathology, as well as its classification and diagnosis. Broad theories of the development of the various psychological disorders will be touched on, drawing from psychodynamic, cognitive, and neuroscience perspectives, as well as social factors. 8. Lifespan Development This module will provide you with an overview of human development across the lifespan, including how childhood experiences affect later development. Different approaches to human development will be discussed and compared, including: attachment theory, behavioural genetics, psychodynamic theories, and biopyschosocial approaches. Different domains of human development will be covered, e.g. cognitive, social, emotional, and moral development across the lifespan.

Because these processes are so automatic, and their outcome so convincing, people are often not aware that what they are experiencing is merely an interpretation, and as such can be inaccurate. This module will challenge you to think more clearly about this, and consider the ways in which the brain constructs its interpretation of the world, and the ways in which this interpretation can be misleading.

In fact, many of my friends are actually doing just that, and re-training for new careers by distance learning. Im really enjoying it!
