(October 2010) In Islam, exorcism is called ruqya. It is used to repair the damage caused by sihr or witchcraft. It consists of reciting some specific verses from the Quran which glorify God (e.g. The Throne Verse (Arabic: Ayatul Kursi), and invoke God's help. In some cases, the adhan(the call for daily prayers) is also read, as this has the effect of repelling non-angelic unseen beings or the jinn. The Islamic prophet Muhammad taught his followers to read the last three suras from the Quran, Surat alIkhlas (The Fidelity), Surat al-Falaq(The Dawn) and Surat al-Nas (Mankind).

I have witnessed. I have also heard directly from Islamic scholar that specializes in it. Till today, one thing that keeps amazing me and indeed convinced me about the authenticity of this Islam, is it's completeness. There is no area Islam doesn't touch. There are comprehensive rules, from the Qur'an and Prophet's teaching, on exorcism. The summary of the rule of excorcism is: -Recite special Qura'nic verses(Ayatul Kursiyyu Q2:55, Q 112-114,Suratul Jinn and some others) on the afflicted person -The reciter should be a someone very knowledgeable and has great iman(faith) and taqwa(fear of Allah), not somebody that indulges in sins -It should be done in line with the Sunnah(practice) of Prophet of Muhammad, not just anyhow -The environment where the exorcism is being made should be clean, spiritually and physically, free from animate pictures, crosses etc around If the jinn is inside the person, the power of the Qur'anic verses will make it

The jinn will be feeling serious heat by the power of the Qur'an and will begin to speak through the mouth of the person possessed. According to Sunnah, the exorcist may ask the jinn some questions about his religion, why it attacked the person etc, but anything the jinn says should not be taken as absolutely true as the Prophet had taught us that they are compulsive liars, but speak truths just once in a while.The exorcist is also required to preach to the jinn to accept Islam. I have also witnessed exorcism in real life and I was amazed at the power of these Qur'anic verses. Apart from the attack on a family member which by Allah's mercy, Qur'anic recitation solved, and the one narrated by Nairalander Bindex, a nonMuslim, let me narrate some other real life cases of exorcism in Nigeria here and some abroad. LAGOS Some years ago, this Muslim lady started behaving strangely and it was established taht she was attacked by jinn(mind you, not all strange behaviours are cases of Jinn possession, there is physiologically-induced mental imbalance as well, and the solution here may be taking the victim to Hospital.). Alhaji Akindele, an Ibadan-based Islamic scholar, who is wellknown for treating Jinn attack, was invited(we invited him in that our family case too). He prepared the environemnt and started reciting these verses on the afflicted lady. It became very intense, and suddenly, the mother of the lady ran out Unclad and told Alhaji to stop what he was doing, that she sent the jinn to her daughter when she refused to join witchcraft she had invited her to. Alhaji told her her power is set to doom and he continued with the recitation and the jinn eventually left the lady and she got well. Allah is wonderful

ABUJA/KADUNA/IFE/LAGOS This story was narrated by the person involved herself. It was in 1990/91 session in OAU. She was a Muslim, though just nominal. She was coming from JC party in the midnight, around Pharmacy building, to her Moremi hostel. Suddenly, she saw a black dog pass behind her. Shortly after, an extremely handsome guy was calling her from the back. She looked back and the guy walked up to her. A very heavy toasting started, till they departed as she entered her Moremi hall. She agreed to the guys proposal. The relationship had gone far when the 'guy' revealed to her that he was a jinn taking human form. The lady confessed that the guy made pleasurable sex to her etc. She became rich and just after three years of leaving Ife, she already had houses in Lagos,Kaduna and Abuja through the satanic forces of her jinn 'husband'. Deep inside her, she wasn't happy with what was going on, but her 'husband' had threatened to kill her if she revealed what was going on. One day in 1995(can't recall the exact year she said but around 1995) she sid she attended one programme in National mosque,Abuja and the lecturer was talking about the power of Ayatul Kursiyyu(Q2:55) and he mentioned its potency in warding off devil attack. She said she started reciting the ayah every night, and one night, her 'husband' appeared to her with axe threatening to kill her. She engaged her in fight and she was able to overpower him. The jinn disappeared.She woke up only to learn that her houses in Abuja, KD and Lagos were all burning, simultaneously. She lost all the wealth she acquired as a 'wife' to this jinn. She has now returned to her normal life, still fortifies herself with the Ayatul kursiyyu and other verses. Looks very hard to believe but happened in Nigeria here. IBADAN The lady was a Lawyer, an Ife graduate. Her problem was taht one jinn is disturbing her, appearing to her in dreams, Being Intimate with her and telling her 'he' was her husband and she should not marry. This woman was a professional, an Ife-trained lawyer, who like many nairalanders here, may not believe there was anything as jinn before. To cut the long story short, through the Islamic exorcist traditions(reciting Qur'an etc) she was delivered from the jinn. THEIR DECEPTIVE WAYS: THE IJEBU-ODE EXAMPLE 27 jinns were cast from this woman. The jinninflicted on her familial barreness and other problems. It's a long story but the point I want to mention here is that the exorcist has to be very knowledgeable in addition to being pious and fearful of Allah. He should be fearless of the jinn. In this case, when the exorcism was being done and the jinn began to talk, it gave a condition that it will leave if and if the exorcist can put one red cloth in one junction and other fetish conditions. Ordinarily, the exorcist could have

accepted, in which case he has ignorantly being led by the jinn to commit shirk, but the exorcist refused the agreement proposed and continued to invoke Quranic verses on it until the jinns were expelled. THE IRAQ LADY I read this. She was a Muslim sister, very well-known for her love of Islam and training of children in the area. Suddenly, she started behaving strangely, and carrying Christian crosses. It was observed she had been possessed by Jinns. The exorcist method of reciting Qur'an etc was administered on her and she became well again. THE SRI LANKAN BOY This happened in 1992 and made global news headlines. A 6-month-old baby born into Muslim family started speaking Hindu and performing Hindu rites. It was very amazing and the hindus started using it as a justification of their religion.The newspapers reported it. People from different parts of the world, unfortunately including some Muslims, started visiting Sri lanka to catch a glimpse of the Miracle baby and asking him for their furure etc. Sri Lankan Prime minister,Prima Dasa, made a statement about it and he was trying to say all religions are from same God, whether Muslim, Christian,Hindu etc. A government built house for with security and it became a tourist spot of a sort. A local Islamic scholar who had known the case was one of jinn possession ask for permission to see the 'miracle' boy. After initial resistance from the security, the ustaz was able to have access to the child. Immediately the Child saw him, he was restless and attempted running, but the scholar was able to get hold of him and recited the Qur'an on hin. the boy returned back to his normal state i.e an ordinary 6-month old baby. the jinn possessing him had fled. It happened in Sri Lanka There are many stories of jinn possession and how Islamic exorcism was administered on it, which I have witnessed, read about and heard. They sound fairy tales, but these things happened. The Nairalander that witnessed how Qur'an was being used to exorcise has attested to this. SOME OTHER IMPORTANT THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT EXORCISM IN ISLAM -We don't use evil to cure evil. So it is not permitted to use unislamic ways to attempt to expel jinn. The best of mankind,Prophet Muhammad, had over 1400 years ago, taught us how to go about it, and till today the sunnah methodology works wonder. You cannot send jinn to expel jinn. -You cannot enter into agreement with jinn in the process of exorcising. It should be unconditional. You cannot take anything said by the Jinn as a basis for worship in Islam. For example,if it tells you something that goes against an Islamic principle, don't take it as truth. They lie a lot.

-There are some so-called alfas that use jinn. please beware of them. If exorcism is involving killing an animal, taking calabash etc, please reject it. The Sunnah methodology doesn't involve that, and if it appears working, then know you are using evil to cure evil, and it leads to Shirk. Most times, in these methods the jinns leave conditionally, such condition involving the exorcist committing Shirk. The Jinn leaves, not because the method was potent, but being an gaent of Shaytan, it has been able to lead the peopel involve astary, achieving hsi aim. And unfortunately, many of the so-called Alfas, use this unacceptable method. I can vouch for Alhaji Akindele, Mallam Shafii and some other northern scholars in Nigeria.They use the prophet's methodology. -Exorcism may involve having to physically beat the person afflicted, but in actual sense, it's the jinn that will be feeling the pain. But this approach is raely used. the beating has to be systematic. It takes some expertise. The authentic exorcist know how to do it. But care has to be taken, to avoid a re-occurence of what happened in Manchester some years back, where some Muslim brothers, in exorcising,beat the person to death and they were arrested. Beating is rarely used and should be systematic. -Witchcrafts,charms,seeing a dead person in real life, most magics(some are just deception), claims to be seeing God, Jesus etc by these Christian and deviant Muslim 'miracle' workers are all cases of Jinns at work.They are actually seeing something, but what they are seeing are really Jinns deceiving them and leading them astray. I'm 100% convinced about this. A family member was also seeing something frequently, with the 'thing' telling her he was god, that salats(5 days prayers have been cancelled, that christianity and Islam are the same thing, that Qur'an no longer applies and this person exemplified a very great behaviour) and she was preaching all these things around in the neighbourhood, even claiming she was a prophet. I knew she was actually seeing something but all my efforts to convince her that what she was seeing was Jinn and not God, was fruitless, until the Qur'anic ayahs were administered on her and she stopped the preaching and she no longer sees her 'God'. Please the subject Jinn is what every Muslim must know about. If you know much about these creation, you will not be surprised at the way Charms, socalled 'miracles', 'visions' etc work. They are all jinn at work.
