Abraham Lincoln was elected president of the United States in 1860. The Civil War began while he was president. He wrote the Emancipation Proclamation that freed the slaves in 1863. He gave a speech called the Gettysburg Address to help keep the United States together. The war lasted for four years. 6
Abraham Lincoln was assassinated five days after the war ended in 1865. The people of the United States were very sad. They had lost their president. 7
