Sify Launches On-Demand Storage Service Based on Hitachi Architecture

To leverage the growing opportunities in cloud storage, Sify wanted to develop an on-demand and highly scalable platform for storage to cater to its enterprise customers. Sify chose to build on Hitachi storage and software because the basic architecture of the solution enables scaling up as and when required without huge changes to the existing setup or investments.

run up huge bills. And they faced additional challenges related to storage management and manpower. All these translate into loss of business opportunity. To help the customers overcome these challenges and to leverage the growing opportunities in cloud storage, Sify wanted to develop an on-demand and highly scalable platform for storage. With the companys On-Demand Storage service platform, these challenges move away from being an internal pain point, transitioning into a managed service with clearly defined uptimes and service level agreements (SLAs). With this solution, Sifys customers no longer need to buy a product from Sify; rather, they buy an SLA, which eliminates the complexity of managing and operating specific products and technology. There were several key requirements for the new On-Demand Storage service platform. The solution had to start small, but had to have the capability to scale as and when Sify and its customers needs would grow. We wanted the On-Demand Storage platform to be future ready for technologies such as storage virtualization, thin provisioning and unified storage (SAN/NAS/content/archival) platform, as these would become a key game changer for the business as our customers needs grow, says Executive President of Enterprise Services at Sify, P J Nath. Sify also wanted to have the flexibility to add on products from non-Hitachi vendors, depending on the requirements laid down by customers. In addition, the service provider wanted support for tiered storage, in-depth reporting and a chargeback mechanism. And of course, the storage had to be cost-effective as well.

Creating a New Service to Meet Customer Storage Challenges

Sifys new service aim was to deliver a solution to their enterprise customers that would address a range of challenges they faced with respect to storage, such as accelerated storage growth and complexity in managing different data types, islands of storage and legacy systems. Customers would often experience low storage utilization, while power and cooling requirements would

Sify explored various solutions available in the market to find the right architecture for this platform. The Hitachi Data Systems solution offered us the best architecture to enable scalability and provisioning of new features as and when we need them, says Nath.

Hitachi Infrastructure Ensures Scalability, Reliability

Sifys On-Demand Storage service combines award winning Hitachi Adaptable Modular Storage 2500 and Hitachi NAS Platform 3080, powered by BlueArc. Together, they create consolidated, easy to manage pools of storage capacities that can be provisioned as needed to support a wide range of applications and data types. This can be done from a single, integrated infrastructure that is secure, reliable, scalable, cost-effective and agile in the face of changing demands. The software part of the solution includes Hitachi Storage Capacity Reporter, powered by Aptare. With these tools, the Sify team and its end customers can always be in control of each bit of space and how it is being utilized.

Sify On-Demand Storage provides an excellent alternative to the traditional onsite, dedicated storage systems, which are mostly procured on ad hoc basis. In todays unpredictable business environment, IT departments most often either end up procuring higher capacity up front to meet unexpected demands or fall short of capacity when the storage systems are critically needed, says Nath.

Benefits of the Hitachi Data Systems and Sify Relationship

A true business partnership: With this modular platform, Hitachi Data Systems has enabled Sify to step into a new business revenue stream with the least amount of risk, while being prepared to leapfrog into the future when business demands it. Cloud storage is still a new business avenue, and Sify aims to be the first information aware, storage on demand service provider. Sify can confidently enter a new business area with little investment and a long term roadmap clearly laid out by Hitachi Data Systems.

www.hds.com/cloud

19

Add as and when needed: Sify has successfully installed a Hitachi storage infrastructure that can scale out as needed. As the uptake of storage increases, Sify will seamlessly expand capacity across its Tier 3 hosting facilities. Further, Hitachi innovation and focus in the storage space will enable Sify to leverage top technology advancements, such as virtualization, partitioning, new disk formats and so on, without ripping apart the deployed infrastructure. Lower total cost of ownership (TCO): Hitachi storage, with integration capabilities and scalable architecture, allowed Sify to invest minimally, yet rollout a feature rich On-Demand Storage platform that can scale to meet capacity requirements as well as add more features as business demands grow. Easy management, transfer of benefits to customers: With Hitachi Capacity Reporter, Sify gets very easy-to-use configuration and management tools that enable easy daily operations. Further, Sify can deliver forecasting capabilities

based on actual performance and growth to its customers. Being able to deliver on stringent SLAs: Sify delivers up to 99.99 percent guaranteed SLA on its On-Demand Storage services. While a lot of this has to do with Sifys expertise in managed services, the reliability of Hitachi products is a key reason for the confidence in being able to offer such SLAs. Ability to grow heterogeneously: The Hitachi platform for Sifys On-Demand Storage service is open, which means Sify is not constrained by the platform to buy only Hitachi products. Sify is free to choose storage boxes as per its requirements and easily deploy them under the Hitachi controller setup. Information focused delivery model: The Hitachi platform enables Sify to deliver simple packages with SAN and NAS storage bundled with other services to provide an information focused, rather than a hardware focused data placement.

Teliti may also realise up to 33% reduction in TCO per terabyte in the first year of implementation. In addition, VSP can achieve more than 30% reduction in power, cooling and floor space costs. With the Hitachi Content Platform, Teliti is also working with Hitachi Data Systems to provide Archive and Backup as a Service, This will be particularly beneficial for small and medium businesses (SMBs) that are looking for cost-effective and reliable data backup services. The heterogeneous, nonproprietary solution enabled the team to hook up to any platform directly and seamlessly; this was a feature that only Hitachi Data Systems integrates with ease with any operating system in the data center. With these capabilities, Teliti is able to virtualise customers storage and servers on demand based on their usage needs. In addition, Hitachi Dynamic Provisioning, the thin provisioning technology provided by

Hitachi Data Systems will eliminate waste due to over allocation of data. The ability to virtualise both storage and server is a key priority for Teliti. With the new solutions, the team can also virtualise applications. If a customer wants, for example, 1PB of storage at the end of the year for backup, we can provision their storage by allowing them to move their data to the cloud. This will be one of our service offerings: a secure, private cloud, which our customers can access on demand, said Encik Musa. Teliti will use the Hitachi Data Systems Infrastructure Cloud to provide cloud services to customers in the government, education and healthcare segments in Malaysia and elsewhere. With the Hitachi NAS Platform, Teliti can access and protect unstructured data, such as email messages, which are critical to a business, while reducing IT costs. Powerful HNAS file sharing, file server consolidation and data protection features enable Teliti to benefit from consolidation and file tiering capabilities to minimize complexity in the data center.

Based on my experience, Hitachi Data Systems solutions are very reliable. They offer a broad range of services from which both Teliti and our customers will benefit.

With time being of critical importance in developing the data centers infrastructure, the process of deploying and integrating the Hitachi Data Systems solutions with other systems and hardware has been straightforward and seamless, and the training and resources required by the Teliti team are minimal. Not only are the Hitachi Data Systems solutions adopted for the benefit of Telitis customers, they have also been deployed to meet the companys internal storage requirements, catering to the data management needs of the 200 members of the Teliti team.

With the storage solutions in place and supporting the data center infrastructure, Teliti is able to focus on expanding its customer base. In particular, Teliti seeks to reach multinational companies (MNCs) and public sector entities locally and further afield. The team expects about 60% to 70% of customers to be from overseas, as foreign MNCs tend to prefer to locate their data away from their physical offices. Hitachi Data Systems has enabled us to realise our vision of creating a world-class data center and offer cloud-based Managed Services, by designing data storage flexibility and efficiency that will benefit our customers, said Encik Musa.
